SeaMonkey 2.53.7 released!
Greetings, The SeaMonkey Project is pleased to announce the release of SeaMonkey 2.53.7. This isn't going to be a quick canned notification as there is significance in this post. What's so significant? This could be my last "New release" post here on the newsgroups (well, unless we release something between now and prior to newsgroup shutdown). I can't seem to shake the feeling of the fond memories of posting here about the new Releases. First it was KaiRo, then Callek. Then me. A new era will be upon us when we finally find a new place to post this (well, aside for on the blog). Hey, how about I gather everyone's email addresses and spam^H^H^H^H, post new release updates that way? :D [You can put down those pitchforks... I was just joking... really] Jokes aside, it's been a blast posting here and I'm certainly unhappy that it's going the same way as irc.mozilla.org. But perhaps the new 'thing' will be better? Anyway, the end of an era. [Unless Mozilla changes its mind and say to us "Just kidding, the newsgroups are here to stay!"] And as RattyAway [Where are you?] once said.. "Hope springs eternal.." [ok.. he might not have said that... but let's roll with that. It's not like he's going to post on here and rebut thhat ] I'd like to thank Mozilla for having this medium to allow us to all talk about SeaMonkey. "So smoke me a kipper and I'll be back for breakfast!" Or was it "Thanks for all the fishes!" So please check out [1] or [2]. Thanks to all involved. seamonkey-dev, and seamonkey-support lists/newsgroups
Dear All, If you're not aware by now, please let me state that both the Mailing Lists and Newsgroups will be decommissioned soon (Early April). Why? === Why indeed. Tbh, I don't know why. I would believe it's related to the overhead of maintenance and such; but whatever the reasons are, it's a fact. This is going to go to /dev/null. What to do? == We're in the process of finding alternatives to these methods of communications. Yes, I'm quite dismayed at the loss of the newsgroups; but I'm sure we'll make do with what we come up with as an alternative. So please monitor any updates to https://blog.seamonkey-project.org. "ancient" certainly means < 2.24 and > it may even mean < 2.0. > There will definitely be incompatabilities which could cause either SeaMonkey to crash or the profile getting corrupted. This would definitely apply to anything < 2.0. As for the differences, unfortunately, I don't know the inner workings of the profile code to tell which part would work and which part won't. What I do know is that there was never an automatic upgrade path from < 2.0 to 2.0. It was always manual. I think the best way is to backup the profile, and upgrade SeaMonkey manually from < 2.0 to 2.0, then 2.0 to 2.1..etc up until 2.24 (while backing up the profile as you go). Again, I apologize for not being too specific or helpful. Edmund ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Updates: re: 2.49.5
Hi All, This is a quick specific mention for version 2.49.5. There are no updates to this version. There are updates to 2.49.4. Just none to 2.49.5. Users hoping to update to this version will need to update manually. Why? Because 2.49.5 was a difficult version (at least for me) to release as I hadn't gotten any new release process set properly. I hadn't even (still haven't, really) gotten the whole release automation working, so IanN and FRG had to manually do that build. So while I had uploaded the binaries, I had forgotten the updates. While the Linux and mac updates can still be uploaded (they hadn't been clobbered), the windows versions need to be regenerated. That is my fault, and I do apologize. It is inconvenient, especially when I'll have the update system set up properly; but what's done is done. Given that regenerating the whole shebang would be difficult( the build environment requirements are not the same as that for the latest versions), it wouldn't be a very efficient use of a very limited resource group. If and when the release automation is done and can be set to use different build environments (a very complicated task... imo), I don't quite see it being done. So, that said, if you are planning to update to 2.49.5, please do so manually. Updates: General
Hi All, I hope all is well with everyone. I've been spending a lot of time working on the update system. When I started this project some time ago, I had just wanted to use the old system and update (pun not intended)it. Gave up that idea and went for something else. Now fast forward a few years to 2020 after working on this on-and-off. With the release process still being half-manually generated (though the process has gotten a bit faster), I figured I'd tackle this update issue once and for all. I had the intention of setting up the new system such that all versions (2.0 to 2.53.5.1 etc) can update properly. After getting a simple working prototype running, I realized that it's no longer possible to even update anything <= 2.23. Our update site uses TLSv1.1 or 1.2 (and a better set of cyphers) which these versions don't support and it's no longer possible to patch these versions to support TLSv1.1 or TLSv1.2. It is also not likely that we'd set the update system to use SSLv3 or TLSv1 (thanks to Heartbleed, Poodle, and whatever else) and set to a lower cypher set. Errors: Version 2.1 to 2.23 gets a 'ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap' error. Version 2.0x gets a "Data transfer interupted" error. I haven't tested version 1.x. or the Mozilla Suite. So, I have come to the conclusion that it doesn't seem possible to update 2.0 to the latest and greatest. Here's a list of versions and their supported status: Versions o Mozilla Suite, 1.x, 2.0x, <= 2.23 : Not supported. [Related gecko versions: 1.8, 1.8.1, 1.9.1, <= 26 o versions >= 2.24: Supported [related gecko versions: >= 27] This is only considering versions as they are; Not the underlying operating system support. That's my update on the updates. [Probably going to be an update to this update that updates on the update...etc... ad nauseum] We're nearly there. I just need to make sure that the update process won't update systems that *shouldn't* be updated. i.e Updating 2.49.5 to 2.53 on a Winxp system or, in the case of Linux distros own compiled versions, they also won't be updated. [Though I have been told that Linux distros-own compiled versions won't query the update server.] Edmund ___ support-seamonkey mailing list support-seamonkey@lists.mozilla.org https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/support-seamonkey

Can I suggest, if you do go with the To be honest, I"m also tired of the increasing version numbers. It's silly and it's a relic from the rapid train release days. I've always preferred the ol' small # increments. i.e. 2.1a1, 2.1b1 2.1rc1, and finally 2.1 :) Unfortunately, we can't change it to, say 3.x as it represents something new and improved. And by "mess", I mean the new infrastructure which is unfortunately, taking a lot longer to get running properly than I had anticipated. re: 2.46
Hi All, (this is a personal note, so any flak should be directed to me only and no one else). While this is in the soon-to-be-released release notes, I felt it's prudent that I post this here. SeaMonkey 2.46 took it's not-so-sweet time in being released due to a plethora of issues (I am so damn glad at least others are more on the ball than I am -- namely frg whose more clear-headed than I am). That said, there is one major issue. SeaMonkey 2.40 will be the *last* version that supports non-CPU SSE enabled systems. 2.44 (or maybe 2.43) *was* supposed to be the version that gave users the 'your system will no longer be supported due to it not having a SSE-enabled CPU' message (or something like that). Unfortunately, 2.44 was skipped (as was 2.43 and 2.45) and so this will come to users as a surprise (especially those installing the full installer). Since I have no knowledge (we lost this metric awhile ago) of how many users we really have, I don't know how many are affected by this and I suspect we won't know unless someone speaks out here or anywhere. If you are affected, please use 2.40. My humblest apologies for suddenly springing this version on the user base without mentioning it anywhere beforehand (the bug that dealt with this change slipped off my radar). Hi, There will be betas.. just need the following to happen: 1) 2.46 is released 2) figure out if the next release is a beta (2.48) or release (2.47). 3) do a post-mortem discussion as to what the smeg went wrong with 2.46 and why hell broke loose and if it's the guy who did the release... he should be sacked! oh wait.. that's me. *sheepish look* ermm.. umm.. Move along.. nothing to see here. :P Seriously, we'll need to do #3 and perhaps we'll need to repeat the same patches to 2.47 or 2.48. I dunno as right now, I'm still fighting 2.46... Well, I honestly hope it won't involve this much work; but due to a plethora of reasons (infra is sub-optimal, haven't released in a while, code changes required to build..etc), it is difficult to know; and changes are coming in faster than we can handle so it's only when we do a release do we find problems. Hopefully, once 2.46 is out the door, we can do a post-mortem and figure out what we need to change in the infra code to not give us problems. Thanks for your patience. There are a few Gecko alternatives out there (Blink, Webkit, just to name two that I've heard of.. then we come to the murky-i-don't-know territory that is Trident et. al). However, changing our interfaces from Gecko to use anything else is just as difficult to do (and dare I say, impossible given our resources (or lack thereof)). And anyway, in this day and age, we live in an ever-changing environment and thusly the backend would tend to change accordingly. (There is a reason for it being called 'rapid release'). > Because I don't like the impression I'm getting that the slope is rising > and that the trend is not in our favor! The slope has ALWAYS been rising and until we find more resources to flatten this slope by brute force *grin*, it's gonna be that way. "not as much as a slope.. it's more close to a cliff than a slope." :) (not really funny considering our predicament, but life's short.. gotta laugh at the steep/vertical slopes.. :D) [kinda taken from "Bottoms" quote : "Steep? Win32 nightlies
Hi, Just wanted to mention that after figuring out bug 1271903 (reason: PEBCAK! PEBCAK! PEBCAK! "kinda"), I've re-enabled to nightlies for trunk and aurora. (Until the next bustage... :P ) Now the update here wrt Release, that is blocked by a patch that needs to be pushed to c-r; but that's now blocked on the tree being closed. Once it's opened, someone'll push the (c-b patch from bug 1092468) to c-r. Then I'll do a c-r build. After that, we 'should' be in a 'good' shape to build a release. SeaMonkey 2.40 released
Greetings, After so long a delay, for which we apologize, the SeaMonkey Project is pleased to announce the release of SeaMonkey 2.40! So please check out [1] or [2]. Please note that the website information, while updated for 2.40, still requires a bit more work. We cannot repeat this enough. Thank you everyone for your patience with us. This very long delay due to infrastructure and resource issues has been very trying on a lot of people. It has been a very tough release. I think it's the toughest one I've done. However, this isn't to say that I did this alone. Kudos go to a lot of people, particularly the guys/gals in Mozilla's IT and RelEng dept. I particularly want to thank Nick Thomas for his sheer brilliant idea that helped me unhork the partial mar upload script as well as pointing out the necessary changes to migrate off FTP to S3. Thanks to Jens Hatlak for taking the time to do the Website patch. (Really, sorry for the delay.) Also, thanks to Justin Wood for giving me this opportunity to work out the problems myself. If you all take a look at bug 1233615, I think I rivaled the mess I did with the GTK bug (conveniently forgotten the # :P ). The repo changes I made... oh boy. Only time will heal the mess^H^H^H^H wounds. ;P Anyway, most of all, thanks to all the users out there for hanging on to this project. The words of encouragement (especially during the broken-hand period) definitely gave me a boost of energy. Oh. Before I forget and in the light of being transparent, there is a chance I might have goofed something up, especially during the 2.39 Win32 builds as well as the 2.40 builds and also the partial mar and complete mar updates. I hope I didn't screw things up too much, if at all (here's hoping). Please do post here on your findings. Anyway, thanks again. 2.39 and system hanging
Hi, Is it just me, or does 2.39 hang a lot? Especially with getting email? After clicking get messages, it'd download the stuff, and then hang for about ten seconds or so and then resume (after switching windows on me). Like say I am in the 3-pane message window. I click on "Get Msgs". It'd download the mail. Then hang. Once it resumes, it jumps to some other browser window. Mind you, this is with an old profile. Guess I'll try it with a new one. The basic issue is that around 2.38b1 (iirc), we had changed certs, so anything < 2.38b1 won't be able to upgrade to the latest version and will require a full download and install. So while 2.38 -> 2.39 works, 2.x -> 2.38+ (where x <38) won't update.
