[talk-ph] access tagging on private subdivisions
Hi, This was posted in the wikipage: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Philippines#Access_Tagging Access Tagging Since the Philippines is a country where many(!) streets are not public, I suggest everyone while mapping should take a note on the access status (in order to not loose that information). Private Subdivisions (with gate houses and guys with shotguns in front of it) cannot be consideres public accessible, can they? ;) I suggest tagging all of then access=private. I will try to implement this completely in my upcoming final revision of Makati --Sorabsuperstar 11:39, 19 November 2008 (UTC) Any comments? I think this is a good idea, since it is important for routing, and it is particularly a phenomenon here. I will add this tag around my area. cheers, maning -- |-|--| | __.-._ |Ohhh. Great warrior. Re: [OSM-talk] open space land
Thanks for the response. The area in question is land that usually is near a county or state park in the U.S. Usually the area will be about the size of a regular park or a little larger. Sometimes the borders of the land could be touching the park borders. This land is general purpose land, i.e. hiking, biking, horse riding etc. The area doesn't include dense trees, so there is no logging or anything. It's pretty much set aside for its natural beauty. The specific land I was looking at was in California listed under openspaceauthority.org. Thanks. -- Subject: Re: [OSM-talk] open space land May I ask which country that's in? For example in the US (where I am) there are several different types of open space land. National Forests, National Parks, State Parks, State Forests to name a few. All of those have different regulations when it comes to land use (whether you can cut wood, etc.) for example. leisure = park may not automatically apply to all of them. Now this is in the US. I know that Germany has, for example, state and national forests which are typically much more groomed than US national forests. Back when I lived in one of them (I'm not even kidding) at the end of the 90s, they appeared to be more like really large parks than forests, at least to my North American eye. I would personally see it fit to tag those as leisure = park, but don't take this for advice as I don't map stuff in Germany and german mappers would obviously know better. So before giving more precise opinions, I would say we would have to know which jurisdiction you are in, what those open space land actually look like and how they're actually used. My two cents. Charles Original message The government sets aside land for open space land. These usually have specific and boundaries. Are they worth adding? Should they be treated as leisure=park in OSM? ___ ---___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

So you can get gpx data from tainted sources and still have timestamps. So all this is doing is stopping people with older gps systems to upload tracks to the database. Its just a hindrance, and in no way will stop tainted data in the osm. For example lets say somebody opens google maps, and then looks at the google maps, and maps osm, using copy by mind method. Re: [OSM-talk] portuguese translation
I'm comparing the PT version to the DE one and I note that when you edit the DE one it says de at the top rather than page (which you get on PT and EN versions). Looking at the revision history for the PT version you moved it to PT:etc rather than created it there. Could that be the difference? Anyway the bit that I added is: {{ #ifexist: Pt:Tag:{{{key}}}={{{value}}} | [[Pt:Tag:{{{key}}}={{{value}}}|{{#language:pt}}]] nbsp;bull;nbsp;| }} And doing a bit of testing it seems that PT is case sensitive whereas DE isn't (at least for natural=wetland). Using De in the URL automatically converts to DE, but using Pt it says the page isn't found (but PT finds it). How this is controlled I don't know. I'm reluctant to change anything else as the bit I added to the template uses upper case first letter and lower case second letter for all languages, so it is something a bit more fundamental and wiki related. [OSM-talk] rendering of areas with patterns
I've a (slightly off-topic) question regarding rendering of areas with background patterns in mapnik/osmarender. For example, Tag:landuse=cemetery has such a (regular) background pattern. However, I would like to render natural-type areas, looking perhaps like this: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Image:Wetland_symbols.png For these types, more irregularly spaced patterns would be preferable, and it would be great if e.g. tree symbols would not get clipped at the area borders. My questions: does somebody have experience with preparing background patterns for natural area types, like woods, wetlands etc.? How do I prepare/tailor the bitmap tiles (margins, size, resolution, number of colours) used to render the pattern effectively? Can vector tiles be used? Am I right in assuming that a more random looking distribution cannot easily be obtained? Thanks for your help! [OSM-talk] layers and rendering
I know there has been a lot of talk recently about layers and what should be displayed on the maps. I think the public buildings such as libraries, town halls are good to have on the main map. Here is an idea I wanted to throw out to the OSM community. I am not a developer, so I'm not sure what is being done or has been done along these lines or even if it is feasible. Is it possible to somehow turn off and on certain features on the map? I'm imaging something that works similar to mapstudio or another map making program. If someone wanted to see just the buildings, just the roads etc, it would be great if they could check a box and those features would show up or not show up. This would eliminate the worry of the main map becoming too cluttered and it would also help if people wanted to export the map to highlight particular features. Once the feature is approved, it could then be immediately rendered on the map rather than whenever someone decides to render it. Here are a couple of ways this could be accomplished. The first is by having the different data on different layers then turning those layers off and on. The second is by being able to select which tag categories can be viewed. Just food for thought. Thanks. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

The problem is that you either serve the information to the browser, which then slows down hugely, or else you have to render bitmaps for every different layer, and either way you probably require way more server resources. The reason we do it the way it's currently done is that the process scales very well for many people looking at the map (we just keeping sending out the same prerendered image tiles). When everybody is trying to look at a different map, we need about a 1000 times as many servers, which doesn't work so well. Basically: pre-render highways, areas etc as at present. The HTML tiles can be stored, delivered and overlaid in pretty much the same way as other tiles. The missing bit is that openlayers doesn't know how to handle them, but it can't be that different positioning divs rather than imgs. Since the tiles are pretty simple text, they'll be pretty small and the image icons they refer to will be constant and cached. Then it becomes possible simply by Javascript DOM assignments like for (i in pubs) { pubs[i].style.display = none; } (where pubs is determined from all elements with pub class) to turn them on and off. Or you could poke the style itself from javascript to do all pubs at once go - once you have an HTML tile, there's lots of different ways of approaching the dynamic display part of the problem. I guess this is the real winner for your method, simple manipulation of the POI types. David The lenz POI viewer does a similar thing with a html layer, but doesn't integrate with OL at all (and completely ignores the fact it exists, right down to getting the current view bbox). The main problem with it is the high latency it seems to suffer from due to the on-the-fly data requests. On this subject, I may test out some POI stuff I've been working on for another project. Re: [OSM-talk-nl] Crossing roads
Hallo, Die 1. Version findet Ihr hier: http://www.dimitri-junker.de/tmp/sym2name.zip Als Parameter kann man -i:input.gpx -o:output.gpx -s:steuerfile.ini angeben.
