Re: [OSM-talk] walking routes?
I have used the route tag which I think is approved. route=Lanchester Valley Way route=Battle of Neville's Cross I saw some signs, I guess they are walking routes. They may be interesting but I wouldn't say the best route to get to the end. How about route_quality= (very muddy, maintained path, paved, etc) or route_frequency= (hardly ever visited, summer, popular)? Also these routes shared the same path at one point. I also agree that they were poorly marked, however if you can see a map it may be much easier to link known sections up. -- Gregory [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.livingwithdragons.com ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

I agree that we need to be able to show that 30 sign. It seems to me that we _also_ need to be able to show 50 (or 52, or maybe even 52.12345) to users who've chosen to navigate in km. In the case of the specific example, you'd need to offer that choice, since most of the world drives cars with no mph on the speedo scale. So whatever standard we adopt, we'll need to allow renderers to grok the numbers well enough to do units conversion, and that's whether or not we decide that it's valid for the DB to store string-with-unit. [OSM-talk] Newmarket
I've started doing detailed mapping of Newmarket, Suffolk (nothing uploaded yet to see). As some of you may know, Newmarket is a centre of horse racing, and has some features which , though probably not unique, are unusual. One of these is that a number of roads have 'gallops' alongside them. These are a bit like cycleways but for horses - they have special surfaces, specially constructed crossings and street furniture. They are there sometimes for exercising the horses, but some of them simply provide access from the stables near the centre of the town to the exercising areas on the edge of the town. I could (probably will) put these in as bridleways, but that doesn't really capture the essence. We'd normally think of bridleways as tracks or paths across fields which are open to horses, whereas these are a specially constructed, much higher quality facility. I should have taken some photos - I'll do that next time I'm there. Has anyone else had occasion to map things like this, and have you done anything special? Any other suggestions? I do want them to be rendered as they are prominent features of the town. David ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk

I haven't had occasion to *map* them as such, but I've certainly seen them (e.g. Lambourn in Berkshire). When I've seen them they're not alongside roads, but circular horse tracks in fields. If they're like that, I don't think they should be bridleway, that would make things very confusing. highway=gallops? [OSM-talk] highway=stop
Could someone explain the tag highway=stop provided by the 'Map Features' page ? I would expect that all tags approved and moved to this reference page are clearly described. Intersections with traffic signals should be tagged highwayhttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Key:highway =traffic_signalshttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php?title=Tag:highway%3Dtraffic_signalsaction=edit . But at the end of the page, an important note says: Should highway http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Key:highway=stophttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php?title=Tag:highway%3Dstopaction=editand highway http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Key:highway= traffic_signalshttp://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php?title=Tag:highway%3Dtraffic_signalsaction=editbe used to mark the intersection or where the physical stop sign/signal is? What about junctions where not all directions are signed/signaled? Well, fine, the foot note on the wiki page explains that the main description is a non-sens... Shall we put the node on the way where the sign is, a little bit before the intersection (and how much) ? or is it planned to use a relation ? or does it really help to tag such signs (I mean, it does not influence routing) ? or should we remove this tag from the approved Map features and create a proposal wiki page where a clear definition could be done ? No, the tilesize shouldn't affect the render quality at all. Ok. Manually adjusting the point at which Marble switches to a different tile level could have a positive effect. Right now it happens in void AbstractScanlineTextureMapper::selectTileLevel( ViewParams* viewParams ) using the formula double linearLevel = ( 2.0 * (double)( radius ) / (double) ( m_tileLoader-tileWidth() ) ); I guess ideally the size of the tile on the screen would match about the size of the original tile. You can check this by changing line 119 in marble/src/lib/TextureTile.cpp from bool tileIdVisible = false; if(tileIdVisible) m_painter.paintTileId(theme); to bool tileIdVisible = true; if(tileIdVisible) m_painter.paintTileId (theme); This will enable you to see the tile borders and the filenames + tile level visually directly on the screen. This Debug Mode is very helpful when you work with tiles in Marble! Thanks, I'll try this. Maybe you can afford better resampling at high zooms for smoother results? I'm not sure whether this can be implemented easily at sufficient speed. Right now Marble just looks up the exact color value on the map for each point on the screen We could try to do some more sophisticated high quality rendering when the user stops moving the map. I think this could work. if you're planning to pull tiles from a web service, then rendering fast (scaled) globe and repainting on each tile arrival (with bilinear interpolation for example) shouldn't be a problem. I did something like that - pulling tiles from VE and warping them on-fly into NatGrid and it worked really well (qt4). Whether it's possible to do the same at acceptable speed while moving is a completely different question though I think for 'moving' current approach works well. I could make an argument that this scheme matches the physical world: the ways are aligned on the centreline of the roads (maybe?) and the stop sign is actually some distance back from the centreline of the road protected by the stop sign (at least in the UK) - do any countries have stop signs hanging above the centre of the intersection? -- David James Bad idea to add a node just for the stop, in addition to the intersection. The stop is topologically associated with the intersection, which is more important (and more logical) than the physical location. A relation would probably be the best method. [OSM-talk-nl] nl tileserver in RD ?
___ Talk-fr mailing list Talk-fr@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/talk-fr
