Re: [talk-ph] Tagging suggestion: Use the branch=* tag!
'name:branch' is just something I invented. Besides the reasons as I already stated earlier (like bunching of similar tag by natural sorting-order of josm), I hesitated using plain 'branch' tag earlier because I'm afraid it may be reserved for other generic/universal purpose in osm (that I'm not aware of and produce conflict later...) and I'm too lazy to do research. :-) Now it appears no one is using or will be using 'branch' other than the PH's definition of a shop's branch name or code. ok then, let's adapt 'branch', just rename all name:branch you'll find while editing, and let's hope it becomes adapted by osm. :-) (no problem with garmin map, since we treat both branch name:branch as valid tags in the style filter, until such time we renamed all name:branch for consistency). I have no problem typing it on josm editor, since it's autofill, once it detects the presence of at least one name:branch tag in your work area. 'name:branch' is just a personal preference because name name:branch shows in sequential/alphabetical order on JOSM. It's nicer to look at, and I like the name-association approach in our other openstreetmap. eg. the way we use place:ph which appears close to other place tags (i like the fact that closely-related-tags tend to bunch together) :-) anyway, whatever is agreed upon, i'll follow. (what's the approach of other osm people worldwide or they don't care about the branches?) In the garmin map, it shows as Name - Branch. For garmin map, the plan is to add name + - + name:branch when the map is compiled, so that it's more convenient to search for a particular shop while you're mobile. (need not look at the properties of every poi on the 'search results' to see if you got the correct address). I'm sure gps users know this, and this is the reason why many contributors put the branch-name after the shop's name. So why separate (if we will combine them altogether again for garmin map)?, because others may want to extract all the Jollibee's, Metrobanks, Mecury Drugs, 7-Eleven's etc. It's much much easier to filter out a specific brand (for whatever purpose it may serve, eg. market study). If in the future, I want all my Shell Stations to have a unique custom Icon, all I have to do is filter out all name=Shell amenity=fuel on the style section. If we encourage contributors to put so many different name-branch combinations, we might miss out a few branches in the process. ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
[talk-ph] compile issues (again!) with the osmphgps maps
Dear osmphgps garmin map users, We are having issues with compiling the latest data for the mapsource and macroadtrip installers of the garmin maps. However, the gmapsupp.img data is not affected. I suspect this has something to do with creating the address index. As I have very little time to debug the issue at this time (is it data or mkgmap?), I have reverted the public download link to the last known working version (April 15, 2011). The daily compile is still running, however, until we can sort out the issue, I will not upload them into the public link. And since the gmapsupp is not affected, you can continue using the latest map via the gmapsupp route. If anyone is interested in looking at the compile problems, you can create your own map installers by using the build scripts in our github: https://github.com/maning/osmphgps -- cheers, maning -- Freedom is still the most radical idea of all -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ -- ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

[talk-ph] Google Map Maker Party on May 21
Hi all, Just in case anyone is interested. There will apparently be a Google Map Maker Mapping Party on May 21. See this blog post for details: http://www.gtugphilippines.org/2011/04/may-21-mapping-party.html As far as I know, this is the first true Google Mapping Party in Metro Manila. There has been a similar event in May 2010 before the elections but that was only to map electoral precincts and not via Google Map Maker. Other Mapping Parties have occurred in GenSan and Zamboanga City. BTW, Google got the inspiration for their Mapping Parties from OpenStreetMap, but there is a big difference. OpenStreetMap Mapping Parties almost always involve field surveying (going out to the streets and recording GPS tracks and noting down POIs) while Google Mapping Parties are almost always sit-down events involving armchair mapping (tracing places you know from Google's satellite imagery). Anyway, according to this blog post, http://www.gtugphilippines.org/2011/04/mapping-parties-for-philippine-red.html there will be tons of Google Mapping Parties lined up for the year. I guess we need to organize more OSM Mapping Parties too this year. We shouldn't let Google have all the fun. Hehehe. :-D Eugene ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph

But Belgian is more complicated than France : it depends a little bit on the contact and language used (french/dutch, sometimes english). If you want to send a letter to TEC, you can mention that we can set up a system to make sure that Openstreetmap always has the most current information they can provide in a matter of days (once the initial data is in, of course). We are interested in (for the bus stops): - coordinates (but we will place the node were it fits best in our context and keep track of their positions and ours, in order to know whether it needs an editor's attention) - name of the stop - zone - internal reference number, if one exists and they can share that with us (they are not on the stops, like on the stops of De Lijn) - shelter, waste bin, bench (or not) (not crucial) - We will also keep track of tactile pavement and accessibility for wheelchairs (some platforms are heightened), De Lijn is also placing electronic displays, which I started to tag. - bus lines served by this stop. (It's not because a bus passes by a stop, that it also serves the stop) - operator The biggest obstacle for De Lijn to share their data was that they were not sure about the reliability. I am now ready to set up a system which does a daily check on our data (to counter potential vandalism). And with a system that notifies contributors of changes between the previous data they gave us and the current data. For the moment we are only interested in adding bus stop locations. We do tag bus routes, but we're not asking them for permission to import those (yet). Cheers, Polyglot 2011/4/27 Julien Fastré julienfas...@gmail.com About this topic... [OSM-legal-talk] 'Contents'
The plan to change the licence is to use ODbL for the 'database' and DbCL for the 'database contents'. Are these 'contents' the same as the 'Your Contents' referred to by the CTs - or is that a different kind of contents? Don't the CTs also need to assign rights over 'Your Database' as well as 'Your Contents', since it is likely that even one single contributor would produce effectively a database of map data, just covering a smaller area of the globe? On 27 April 2011 09:26, Ed Avis e...@waniasset.com wrote: The plan to change the licence is to use ODbL for the 'database' and DbCL for the 'database contents'. Are these 'contents' the same as the 'Your Contents' referred to by the CTs - or is that a different kind of contents? They are defined in the CTs as data and/or any other content (contributed by the contributor). As an aside, what any other content might be is not clear since, surely, anything capable of being uploaded to the site is in some definitions of the word data. However that's a standard lawyerly drafting style to try to exclude any possibilities that haven't been thought of (its a style that is discouraged by clear English campaigners but its pretty common). Put more simply Your Contents is anything you upload. contents in the ODbL has a very different sense. The database right refers to a database in the sense of directive 96/9/EC where database is defined as a collection of independent works, data or other materials arranged in a systematic or methodical way and individually accessible by electronic or other means. So from the point of view of EU database law a database consists of something else (works, data etc) which are arranged into the database. The ODbL shadows this definition by saying: “Contents” – The contents of this Database, which includes the information, independent works, or other material collected into the Database. A court is likely to assume this is intended to parallel the definition given in 96/9/EC, so that contents refer to the things arranged to form the database. Those things may be subject to other forms of intellectual property right, including database rights of their own which might even be licensed under the ODbL (for example a database of works, some of which are tables). Hopefully this makes it clear that something isn't either contents or database but could be both or neither. So, contributors may upload data which does not, itself, constitute a copyrightable work and which is not itself a database and therefore the contributors have no intellectual property rights in the data. Alternatively, contributors may upload data which, taken together, does constitute either a copyrightable work and/or a database. Don't the CTs also need to assign rights over 'Your Database' as well as 'Your Contents', since it is likely that even one single contributor would produce effectively a database of map data, just covering a smaller area of the globe? No. The licence grant in clause 2 licences both copyright and database rights to OSMF. A contributor therefore permits any act which might infringe any database right they might have in the data they upload. The wording of the grant makes it clear that the use of the word contents is not meant to equate to that in the ODbL. Or is an individual changeset considered to be pure 'contents' and only when it is combined with other changesets becomes part of a 'database'? As I hope I've clarified, I don't think it makes sense to ask whether something is considered to be pure 'contents'. The two questions are: (i) what is covered by the contributor terms (everything uploaded) and (ii) what does the ODbL licence (the arrangement of OSMF's database)? -- Francis Davey ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

[OSM-talk] [ANN] LinkedGeoData
Hi all, On behalf of the AKSW research group[1] I am happy to announce a new release of LinkedGeoData! The aim of the LinkedGeoData[2] (LGD) project is to make the OpenStreetMap[3] (OSM) datasets easily available as RDF[4]. As such the main target audience is the Semantic Web[4] community, however it may turn out to be useful to a much larger audience. Additionally we are providing interlinking with DBpedia[5] and GeoNames[6] and integration of class labels from translatewiki[7] and icons from the Brian Quinion Icon Collection[8]. The result is a rich, open, and integrated dataset which we hope to be useful for research and application development. The datasets can be publicly accessed via downloads, Linked Data, and SPARQL-endpoints. We have also launched an experimental Live-SPARQL-endpoint that is synchronized with the minutely updates from OSM whereas the changes to our store are republished as RDF. The improvements over the somewhat aged previous release in the middle of 2009 can be summarized as: . Better data quality thanks to a more flexible mapping system. . Spatial query support as supported by OpenLink's Virtuoso[9] enterprise edition. . Two Sparql-endpoints: one containing the data of the most recent LGD release, . and one experimental one synchronzied with OpenStreetMap.org! . More interlinking . Improvements on the LGD-Browser (however this is work in progress) I would like to thank the whole AKSW group and OpenLink for their support in making this release possible, especially: . My supervisors Sören Auer and Jens Lehmann . Konrad Höffner who did the interlinking . Patrick van Kleef from OpenLink for his personal support Furthermore this work is acknowledged by the European Union within the LOD2[10] project.

:-) Pero' stiamo andando un po' OT... ciao maxx ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Re: [Talk-it] mappatura corsia ciclabile + corsia bus + strada

National Highway 7 from Sakata, Yamagata to Akita, Akita, has apparently been deleted. I looked at the history but couldn't figure out why. Can someone undo this? Thanks! -ダグラス ___ Talk-ja mailing list Talk-ja@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ja
Re: [Talk-us] NHD data import question

The sub- basins are fairly large areas, and I have always had a bad time trying to open that much in JOSM much less download it from the server. Any tips? Is there an easy way to get the same area with just water tagged stuff? I just use the mapnik rendering as the background and double check it that way. With any merges, I download the small area that needs a merge. ___ Talk-us mailing list Talk-us@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us
