Re: [OSM-talk] Sidewalks
Hello, I have no problem with most of it, but can you please come up with something else in stead of cycleway=sidewalk. This sounds like the cyclists have to cycle on the part of the road reserved for pedestrians or if the cycleway itself has a sidewalk. I don't know if cycleway=sidepath is proper English, but at least it fits with the tagging scheme of bicycle=use_sidepath. cycleway=sidewalk used only 231 times: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/cycleway=sidewalk (use_)sidepath used many more times: http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org//search?q=sidepath#values --- m.v.g., Cartinus On 25-04-15 11:29, Roland Olbricht wrote: Dear all, our current pedestrian routers often don't give street names, but instead only instructions like look for the line on the map. To improve that I would like to encourage mappers to give separately mapped footways their proper name instead of leaving them without name. The suggestion had been widely discussed with the German community. Finally we found the following approach: Keep separation rules as already established: A sidewalk (or bike lane) shall be mapped as a separate way only if a pedestrian cannot cross the car lanes at any point, i.e. there are fences or grass strip between footway and the car lanes. Change the tagging suggestion for separated sidewalks and bike lanes: - Sidewalks should carry highway=footway + footway=sidewalk + name=Name of the Street (already in widespread use) - Bike lanes should carry highway=cycleway + cycleway=sidewalk + name=Name of the Street (similar problem) Currently, both the suggestion of footway=sidewalk (similar for cycling) and copying the name is not suggested consistenly in the wiki. Are there any objections to clean-up the wiki with that regard? Side effects on other tools are almost uniformly positive: - Having the name multiple times on the various chunks of a street is a standard OSM policy. - Renderers could handle abundant name tags by ignoring names on ways tagged with footway/cycleway=sidewalk - Routing engines actually can improve by having the name of the road - Quality assurance tools would also profit by having more hints for checking Best regards, Roland ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

No, it is not a tagging error. It is a direct result of the unholy mess created by the definition of the path tag. Often the only way to tag working access restrictions on highway=path, is to first close it with access=no/private and then opening it up with more specific tags like foot=permissive. Re: [Talk-transit] Mapping intercity bus routes
While you could call all intercity buses express buses. Not all express buses are intercity buses. A common scheme around here is for rush hour express lines that stop at all stops in the suburbs/villages, then skip most/all stops in the city proper and end at the central (bus)station. The original Oxomoa scheme already contained a solution to your problem[1]. It simply is not widely used yet. See taginfo[2]: bus=long_distance (70 uses currently in the database) bus=interurban (59 uses currently in the database) It would be handy to standardize on one of those two. I don't agree that this is purely a rendering problem. The information needed to distinguish urban bus transit from long distance coach services simply does not exist in the database at the moment and there is no consistent way of tagging routes so that this distinction could be made. Looking at the active public transport proposal again, the network tag of route=bus/train/subway/tram could be part of a solution, but it seems that the usage is not really consistent everywhere. For example, in Helsinki the bus routes have network=Helsinki, subway has network='Helsingin metro' and so on, even though both can be used with the same ticket. This could be a local problem though. I still think that long distance services which are not part of an urban transit network should be distinguished somehow, so I like the idea of using service=express for coaches. This could mostly do what I was proposing, if it would be widely used and the rendered correctly. Currently this tag seems to be used only around Oxford and ignored by tile rendering style sheets. The rendering of coach routes should be de-emphasized in high zoom levels, i.e. they should be overdrawn by local transit bus lines, but on the other hand they should be also drawn in low zoom levels, like long distance train routes in Öpnvkarte are. No that is not beside the point at all. cuisine=vegetarian has 871 uses diet:vegetarian has 456 uses Because diet:... is approved people are suddenly allowed to write on both the cuisine page and the diet:... page that you shouldn't use cuisine=vegetarian? gluten_free=yes has 53 uses diet:gluten_free has 88 uses This insignificant difference suddenly lets you declare one key as controversial and hardly used? Moving this into the proposal namespace makes it clear that this is just an idea at this point, but lets people find it if they search for gluten free. That is a nice text where you admit that according to you the proposal system somehow magically grants wiki editors permission to vandalize other people's tag documentation and at the same time allows them to document hardly used but voted tags. For people who have missed why the voting system is broken. Here is a nice example: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Proposed_features/Designation On 07/04/2013 11:48 PM, Tobias Knerr wrote: On 04.07.2013 23:04, Cartinus wrote: gluten_free=yes has 53 uses diet:gluten_free has 88 uses This insignificant difference suddenly lets you declare one key as controversial and hardly used? The gluten_free key is controversial because there are many users who support a different key. It is hardly used because it only has 53 uses. The stats for diet:gluten_free did not play any role for my argument. You can't play the numbers game only when it suits you and stay believable. To me, proposals do matter (so diet:vegetarian from your examples would not be judged purely based on usage stats). I just don't consider it a requirement for considering a tag established. The proposal process is simply one of several valid approaches. As for gluten_free, why I'm even looking at the numbers here is because there has to be some proper reason for giving a key its own Key:* page. And gluten_free does not have an approved proposal, major tool support or anything like that, so the only thing left would be impressive taginfo stats - but it doesn't have much to offer in that department either. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk -- --- m.v.g., Cartinus ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] Overlapping ways
Hello, The ways should be on top of each other, but they should _not_ share all nodes. Only the nodes at the ends where they connect in the real world should be shared with something. A shared node means something shares the same space in _three_ dimensions and you should be able to route from all objects connected to that node to all other objects connected to the same node. (Baring access restrictions of course. At a level railroad crossing the road and railway share a node, but almost no vehicles can route that way.) Fixer tools often flags things incorrectly. That is why good tools allow you to flag things as false positives. On 01/09/2013 09:51 PM, Rob Nickerson wrote: Hi, I used the layer tag, but not bridge (as its a carpark not a bridge) but because the way shares nodes with the way one layer down, it seems to be flagged as duplicate and deleted by other mappers. As you will see, because the layer 0 exit way runs directly under my rectangular level 1 parking aisle, it appears to be flagged as a duplicate way in one of the fixer tools. As such someone has removed part of the rectangular layer=1 way, leaving just a horse shoe (which is incorrect): http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/way/141374480 Am I doing something wrong? Copyright has absolutely nothing to do with this at all. All arguments people use in this this discussion in relation to copyright are just a smokescreen to try to get their way. When viewing Google StreetView you are using a service from Google. The rules in relation to that, are the rules for business transactions, not those of copyright. Just like Openstreetmap has rules that say you are not allowed to scrape tiles from our tileserver, Google has rules that say when you are allowed to use their services. It's clear that Google's photos in street view have no originality at all, they are just facts. Using some information everybody can see in those images isn't a creative process either. In the light of those definitions of derivative work, I can't understand how one might see a infringement of google terms of use when OSM contributors look at Google Street View photos to verify some facts (street names, signs, ...) Gaëtan So that's basically another iteration of we're French, we're different. Yes, we know you have a different culture, but even in France bits come in two flavors 0 and 1. I read the whole mess on the mailinglists en de wiki. The point you are completely missing is that unless there is a conflict the local community can't resolve, the DWG won't get involved at all. If you had followed the whole thread, then you could have seen that e.g. The mappers in Brussels have decided on a solution that works for them. Other bi- or multilingual areas chose different solutions. Nobody (including the DWG) is forcing them to use a worldwide single approach. A single vandal from outside the area (as that is what you propose to do in the whole ex-USSR) messing around is something a local community can easily fix themselves. - One person, however isolated he is living, is never a community. You need more people for that. If a single city has a dedicated group of mappers, then that is a community. If there is only an active mapper in every fifth city in the country, then the local community is obviously bigger than one city. Again: The lines on the map of the city of Utrecht are not routes at all. They are roughly the ways busiest with cyclist radiating out of the central railway station. Even for it's purpose it is fairly useless, since it misses all the important tangential routes. There are similar maps made by the city of Utrecht for car traffic. As usual the holy cow of western society (the car) gets more attention and these maps have move detail (like traffic in tangential directions and neighbourhood feeders). The local mappers used these as a rough guideline for which roads to map as primary, secondary and tertiary. That is the normal flow of information. You can use the (overly) generalized maps made for policy making to selectively add information to OSM, but making these style of maps always requires human editors of the map (not just of the map data). --- m.v.g., Cartinus ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk-nl] Toponym
--- m.v.g., Cartinus ___ Talk-nl mailing list Talk-nl@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-nl

If you want OSM to be able to do that, then start working on a viable plan to get those resources. - --- m.v.g., Cartinus -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJO/dKLAAoJEInLUvwrL2kI3FYH/3eyeuWKsHt61TNo0QLLmBGf UIPeCoza4e8X0xm5NzQJbKc3cEISrF3heW8cZoP/b/b+wrPin0JEGkncnByOAxnR S3U2NS2OpwwyDpUXvItydFQ42FRCWs3RMblIvw578oJCFj/1jh1xBpncDomFEcaQ EF5RjEHnWsNofgIkvd7nCoStQDAinTHlp1jPe/K6UHScwJv2+xmF7KKX2vBYgume 4p79LvVgEdursgj4MiaGlnpXIrrtbcm5OgDxsoNRWfAbkOPoOdl8mTn4rm1H7vE3 JFairw3HVbbYFpPPoGGtoW4MLjQdRVzD5O5Qnu7ePgl0OlqsoZn/rnqtb03npc8= =WMek -END PGP SIGNATURE- ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

The tile usage policy that says roughly use this for your personal benefit, don't scrape them – iDroid apps don't get blocked because they let people look at the map, they get blocked because they create unnecessary load in some way (e.g. by scraping) Tom Davie And if everyone is going to use our map, then we run into exactly the same problem as when a single person is scraping. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello, Or you can do both by improving on the idea used here: http://www.openstreetmap.nl/ In the floating box you can put a lot of information about the project. Then when you click on Toon kaart (just above the logo), you get a big map. We're not a map/imagery/streetview portal and we should be upfront about that. This is a lot better though than Can you believe it, OpenStreetMap doesn't even have an open street map on their home page!. Re: [OSM-talk] Running Osmosis under Windows 7
On 12/20/2011 09:35 PM, john whelan wrote: I suspect Oracle isn't very good at installing Java under windows. When I attempt to run Osmosis I get Java as an unknown. Looking at Osmosis I get the impression that I can feed it a parameter to tell it where Java is located but I haven't been able to spot the appropriate bit of documentation. I'm trying to experiment with PBF files, and although I have a fair bit of experience programming I must confess much of that was in assembler etc. and not in Java. Could someone point me to some documentation please. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osmosis/Beginners_Guide --- m.v.g., Cartinus ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
