Nice job, Brian. I like the continuous alternating strokes in the
latter part of the tune you put in.

Joe

I seem to notice a trait of Tater followers, and maybe it's a Monroe
trait,
there's a lot of slidin' goin' on. Is that an emulation of the fiddle
in
some manner? I know John Hartford considered Big Mon to be America's
best
fiddler. Or, so he stated in the song, The Cross-Eyed Child.

Thanks Linda - any new ideas are mostly accidental!! As has been said
previously, for a tune that at face value seems pretty simple its kinda
complicated. I messed around with it some on the fiddle and although I'm not
much of a fiddle player, it does come a little easier on the fiddle...

On the question of is a B or a C...
might just play it how you want...after all, it gets to be your
take..and we are all free to change any of it to say something
different. I don't think there can be a right or wrong but there can
be some iffy double stops..G some glitch in technique..that is my
big worry. Might have to throw some in just to make that point...

Here's my second version. Gee, do you think we're obsessive
compulsive? Every time I think I have this down I realize there's some
other part of it I don't have right. I *think* the held A is for two
beats (at about 120 bpm) a the end of the shortened B part on The
Girls' Video. I just realized watching the play back that I'm playing
both beats just to make it easier to count, instead of slurring it,
which would be much cooler. Now, the other things I don't have right
are too numerous to count!

both beats just to make it easier to count, instead of slurring it,
which would be much cooler. Now, the other things I don't have right
 are too numerous to count!

Re: Song of the Month-December 2010

2010-12-07 Thread mgromkey
OK, I called in the CSI investigators this a.m. At approx. 1:20 sec.
on The Girls Video, you can see the lefthand pinky finger on girl on
the right go from the G to the A on the D string during the Brain
Spasm part of the arrangement, which is played along with the open A.
I'm still not 100 percent sure on the count, but it sounds as if
they're chording a G at the end of measure six on the Tater Codex
during the repeat of the B part, then raising it a second to the A,
which is played against an open A string drone. If I wrote this out,
I'd insert a special old time two-beat measure at the end of the
truncated second B part, just ahead of teleporting back to the head of
the tune. As utterly bizarre as this is, it has the effect of
whipsawing the tune into hyperspace at the turnaround. Beam me up,
Scotty. I need more coffee.

All,

I haven't had time to pick up the mandolin but once in the last two weeks.
Life is kinda busy right now. My wife is making her second trip in 4 days 2
hours away to see her mother in ICU. It really is a matter of (little) time
before she is gone. In the meantime, I am Mr. Mom and Mr. Dad, taking care of
a birthday slumber party for my little girl, who turned seven yesterday among
the rest of the duties.

I've intentionally not listened to anyone's recording because I don't want to
be influenced by anyone's take on it. I am sure they are all terrific, though.

I hope to get some time to work on it tonight.

I know where you are at (as I believe one may say in the United
States). There is a reason the Universe created Disney: it's to give
parents 80 minutes of mandolin practice time, and to hell with the
dirty washing. Jane Austen had loads of kids, no wii and even fewer
Nintendo DS, but did her pages per day. On the other hand, all her
kids grew up to be football hooligans and dope fiends, due to their
abandonment by their mother in favour of art.
Or not.
I say no matter how poor the situation is, make sure you do something
for yourself But maybe I'm just trying to reinforce the lessons
and do the homework...

2010-12-06 Thread Robin Gravina
:-)

Looking forward to hearing everyone's versions: I learned something
and want to steal bits from every one so far, and even the horrible
process of sitting there with the camera rolling is useful.
And I hope there will be a Tater version at month's end.

Now for grubs, there were some excellent, fat, fine white ones on
display as I shovelled compost in the rain this morning.

Re: Song of the Month-December 2010

2010-12-06 Thread mgromkey
I don't know if this'll help the effort, but as Don pointed out to me
in a sidebar discussion, the Hatcher version, and the reference video
of the two women playing fiddle, plays the B part one and a half
times. In the middle of the second time through, Hatcher has kind of a
brain bubble, drags out an A chord, and inexplicably kicks back to bar
1. Truly kinky. Tater's gentlemanly transcript has a straight repeat
on the B part, which is a lot more civilized. There is, however,
something appealing about the more insane version.

Below is a link to an interesting Exhibition Of Weird Fiddle Tunes
found when I Googled Hatcher as an alternative to actually doing work
at the end of the day. It's filled with amusing observations about old-
time fiddlers who seem to have taken composition lessons from
aliens.

2010-12-06 Thread kathy nichols
Thank you for bring this up. I wondered if I was the only one
confused by the difference between the mp3, the youtube, and the tab.

I went to a jam this weekend and asked an old time fiddler there if he
knew Hatcher's version of Grub Springs. He promptly played the
straight version of the tune found on most of the other youtube
videos.
He has played around Michigan for many years, just never heard the
crooked version but thought the one he played was Hatcher's version.

I find working on one measure at a time is helping some. Still
confused about which fingers to use on the slides, especially in the
7th measure.

Interesting spelling for the blogger's first name
Daevid.kinda crooked.

2010-12-04 Thread mistertaterbug
Robin,
Yea, it seems simple enough at first glance. But there's a lot going
on, as you're finding out. There are some timing issues, some odd
phrasing, ornaments that only make themselves known after a few
listenings, etc. In the end, if you hear it being played differently
on the ends, or the number of times through, go with it. Make it your
own.

Does anybody but me think that a month is too long to learn a song? I
mean, I've been working on Garfield's Blackberry Blossom for about
10 years off and on, so I get it, but maybe two weeks is better. Or is
there just too much to do for some to get it together in two weeks?
I'm a mind to think that some of you are like me in that if the time

2010-12-04 Thread kathy nichols
The procrastination monster can be a big factor but being busy with
other life stuff can be too. Guess it depends on how much everyone is
looking to develop their repertoires.
I personally like to have 3 or 4 tunes I am working on at a time.
Perfecting a tune takes me alot longer than getting it into finger
muscle memory. It feels like a big accomplishment when I can play it
without using the tab. Depending on the tune, that can take several
weeks or longer.

Let's see, 2 new tunes per month would make 24 new tunes per year.
That sounds reasonable. Those who only want one per month can pick
the one they want to work on.

Re: Song of the Month-December 2010

2010-12-04 Thread Gathel Runnels
Every tune is different for me. Sometimes I get it right away and then other
tunes never seem to sink in and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do
with the difficulty of the tune. I can play along with both the youtube and
Hatcher's recording (of course I'm playing it on the fiddle and would
probably crash and burn if I was learning the tune from another source) but
I would not feel comfortable at all performing the tune at this point. So I
don't know if it's better to have a new tune every two weeks instead of
every month. I suspect that with most of us it would be better to stick with
once a month just because of all the other stuff we have to deal with. I
would probably get behind with the shorter time period but whatever is fine
with me.

One of things I've noticed is that in the youtube they put the A drone at
the end of the tune but it sounds like Hatcher is putting it at the
beginning of the tune. Does anyone else hear it that way?

I hung with the Song A Week group religiously for the first six months. It
was a musical Bataan Death March to learn a tune and post a video every
week! ... So, are people posting their Grubs somewhere, or is this just a
personal pedagogical challenge? I don't see them. (I also don't see these
few messages in the group. Perhaps if I paid closer attention I wouldn't be
as confused!)

Maybe two weeks would be good: personally if I have can get the time to work
on stuff, which is not guaranteed, I get into it quite quickly, at least to
the point where I am then ready to play it for the next weeks and months, at
which point they may be better, but possibly not massively better than when
I have just learnt them...

Not sure what I'm saying here, but why not give the two weeks a whirl. I'll
sit and grub in front of my webcam over this long weekend if I get the
chance. Why not!

I'm not happy with them nor they with me.
This one seemed to lock into my brain on the first day, though my B part timing

I've recorded my version, but not brave enough to post it until I see a few of

mean, I've been working on Garfield's Blackberry Blossom for about
10 years off and on, so I get it, but maybe two weeks is better. Or is
there just too much to do for some to get it together in two weeks?
I'm a mind to think that some of you are like me in that if the time

a couple weeks. Of course, I know this is supposed to be fun too.

Depending on the tune(s) and how busy I am during that month/two weeks, I could
possibly hang with every two weeks. I like Kathy's idea of picking two at the
beginning of the month and then you can choose which one to learn first and the
quicker ones can learn both. Just my 0.02.

Mike,
I just click the link at the bottom of the discussion topic that lists
the number of messages and it takes me to the newest ones first.
As for the time allotted per song, I can see that maybe shortening the
time could possibly put too much pressure on. So, let's just leave it
as is. I need time to get the nuts and bolts down anyway.

Hey Deep,
Also remember that there's no rule that says you can't play the tune
your way. I'm going to play the form the way I hear it, but stick to
the nuances...up to a point. I'm sure the person Hatcher learned the
tune from might have had another take on it.

2010-12-03 Thread Robin Gravina
How's everyone doing with this? I finally got a chance to first do
some beat counting on the train with the ipod and a pencil, and then
to try to copy the fiddlers this evening: hellish difficult to get the
timing in the b section, even though I've got the bars counted out
right I think. It's funny how something so counter intuitive and
random to me sounds so right, but so difficult to do. I guess it's a
question of understanding and assimilating that rhythm and style
through listening.
And then there's the slides and the pinkie, and the way to make it
sound menacing, not trite.
