AFAIK Kaspersky is the only AV with a TB plugin at this time.

NAV 2002 checks emails independent of your email client. No need for
setting anything under options.

You can also check the archive for some more information - this has
been debated quite recently.

You can't get a virus just by opening the message (as you can in

M of my accounts?

The Inbox-Known folder is a 'common folder'. This is a recently added
feature to TB! where you can create folders that reside outside
accounts. If you collapse all your account folder trees, you'll see
the Inbox-Known folder sitting there all by itself.

It's auto-created for you as a folder to filter messages from known
people in your address book to. Many, however, don't find it useful
and wish to delete the folder. If you wish to, first go into each
accounts filter rules configuration panel and disable the filter
called 'known', then delete the folder.

M 2a. Virus Protection under Options. Which virus programs provide

The plugins are currently in development. There's for NOD32, Panda
Antivirus, Sophos Antivirus, Antivirus95NT. There may be a couple
more.

M Does Norton Anti-virus?

No.

M If yes, how do I set it up under options?

Norton Antivirus comes packaged with its own mail checker and doesn't
require any setup. It will just work once you enable it.

M 2b. If I set my Preferences to Display HTML part of messages
M automatically, do I have to worry about getting viruses through
M email when I read those HTML messages -- and I don't double click
M any attachments in those messages?

'Virus' infection in this context depends on your fetching embedded
links in the HTML messages. TB! doesn't fetch links to images that
are embedded in html messages for security reasons.

Many wish for TB! to be able to do this but I hope that they now see
the wisdom in TB!'s current design. If you wish to fetch embedded
links then open the message in your browser by double-clicking the
html attachment.

M 3. Previously under v1.53, when I have my cursor on a READ message,
M then View | Display | Unread Messages, my cursor would stay what it
M was. No the cursor jumps to the first Unread Message, if there is
M one; otherwise, it display none. Is that a change? Or is it a quirk
M in my system?

I pass here since I don't do this often enough to detect a pattern
change.

M 4. Filter of Sent mail. How do I do that? [There is no section for
M Sent Mail, only Outgoing Mail, and the source is the Outbox.]

You can filter sent mail at the point where they're being sent. This
is what the outgoing filter rules set is for.

Yes, I did. Everybody who did it could find that some of necessary

misleading.

To repeat where this article is:

MDP The default glyphs are built in. if a glyphs.bmp file is present,

Thanks for this answer. In the Tony's article only what is mentioned

open standard glyph.bmp if it is built in?

3) Another thing to remember is that the whole glyphs image file is
like a big grid. Each icon needs to be placed centrally in its own
square on this grid otherwise they may not be aligned or they may even
be part missing when TB uses them -- without any mention about
dimensions of this grid, number of icons and their sequence. Only what
is mentioned is that each icon is 25x25 pixels, without any notice

IMHO, this article should be updated and needed information which are

The history of this will reveal what the article is saying. In the
early days of TB!, the toolbar icons looked different ... more spartan
than the current ones. There was a cry for a facelift.

TB!'s developers tend to do better than what's normally requested. In
this spirit, they not only developed new glyphs for the toolbars, but
developed a means for the users to create their own toolbar icons.
Pretty much like in Opera. The newer glyphs were integrated in the TB!
executable while the older, 'standard' ones were provided as a file
called glyphs.bmp which one could use if they wished to by placing the
file in the TB! installation directory and then restarting TB!.

M 3) Another thing to remember is that the whole glyphs image file

Again, in the 'spirit' of TB!, the feature was added with no real
documentation of it. The FAQ's article was written by one of the
members of this list and as you can see, he was doing the whole thing
without working with any real specs.

M IMHO, this article should be updated and needed information which
M are missing and are incorrect should be presented and corrected
M there. Else, I would really appreciate any other source with

We are yet to have any official documentation of this. I don't know
enough about that sort of thing to offer my own information. I don't
know about Marck as well but I think he's in the same position as me.

If Ritlabs doesn't provide information on this, then some cough
'reverse engineering' will be required and then the documentation
created from this. At present the only updating that we can do is to
change the part about loading the standard glyphs.bmp file.

If you like, I could send you the current glyphs.bmp so that you can
work on it. I don't know how I got it since it's so long ago, but I
now have it.

I'm really disappointed that this part didn't take off but I think
it's the fact that the feature wasn't introduced when there were users
who could in fact design nice toolbar icon sets combined with there
being no detailed documentation of it in the help and newer users
aren't aware of it.

The feature isn't being promoted by Ritlabs either. IMO, it should be
added in their feature list.

Yes - see my problem/solution with 1.60h above. Since each file

always keep backup copies on CD (a good idea anyway; in case something

Yes, you certainly can.

I'd always use PGP/GnuPG if I could help it.

The thing with S/MIME is that you can't really verify a persons
identity or that all messages are really coming from the same sender
as easily as with PGP. With PGP you can easily associate messages with
a particular sender without necessarily knowing their true identity.
In a lot of instances (my list messages as a moderator) being a good
example, this is all that's needed.

With S/MIME, I don't see how you can achieve this as a freemail
member. You have to get full identity certification through an
authorized notary seeing you face to face with proper identification
or through sending the necessary documents to Thawte with the required
payment.

A question for the S/MIME users. Do you have to first import a copy
of the senders S/MIME key in your address book before you can test the
validity of any of the senders S/MIME signed messages? I think this is
the case with TB! but is this the case with OE and other S/MIME
compliant clients?

You can use S/MIME and PGP interchangeably but where ever the
opportunity presents itself, I think you should go for PGP.

This is a known problem with 1.60c that appears to be fixed in 1.60h.
Given the S/MIME problems reported in 1.60h, I will not be installing
that. I do know that 1.53t worked just fine, and I'm considering
backlevel installing to that release, since it seems to have far fewer
reported bugs.

I cannot open email with yellow icon in 1.60h

2002-04-28 Thread David Stone

Hello,

Thought I'd try version 1.60h :)

However I find that email which have the small round yellow icon with
a tick over the envelope cannot be opened with 1.60h. I thought it
might be an old 'cannot view HTML email' problem I've had in the past.
When I reverted to 1.60c I found the email could be opened but was
just plain text email but with an invalid signature marker.

Is it me should I have done something ;)

1.60h has a bug that prevents you from opening S/MIME signed messages
(the little check mark icon signifies that the message was signed
using S/MIME).

I too have gone back to 1.60c, and everything works properly again.

Invalid date to encode

2002-04-28 Thread Paul Meathrel

Hi all,

I have been using TB for about a week and recently upgraded my trial
to 1.60h. When I now load the program I get a dialog box saying
invalid date to encode this is quickly obscured by the evaluation
version window. When I close the eval window I cannot access the
dialog box. However I can see that it is there when I minimize the
window! I have also got an odd message which appears when I try to
exit which says:

   Some tasks are now active
Do you wish to exit when they are finished?

   Yes or No.

Regardless of what I press I always have to end the task. I am
running on Windows XP Pro. Does anyone have any ideas?

RO Can't be done. TB is a plain text e-mail client.

Yes it can. It is not easy.

- From the FAQ

You can create an HTML document and attach it to an email message. You can
then export the message with the HTML attachment to a .MSG file, change the
'content-type' header from 'multipart/mixed' to 'multipart/alternative',
import the message back into the outbox and finally (phew!) send it.

Obviously, this procedure is not for the faint hearted. (My thanks to Oleg

and attach it in message. If you have some pictures and background
inside, attach them too. So, no any export/import work around nor
modifying headers.

I sent it to myself and received by Messenger: it looks quite

I think they are part of the message. One tab would be for plain text,
while the others probably represent the HTML and attachments. As for
being infected, it appears as if AVG caught it in time, although WORM_KLEZ.G
is allegedly supposed to infect someone even by viewing the message. That
however, may only be possible if one's Mail Client is set up such that
malicious HTML code is automatically executed from within messages.

In any case, apparently NAV has a tool on their Web site that removes this
particular worm.

The Inbox-Known folder is a 'common folder'. This is a recently added

I have no problems reading the messages from this same person and I
am now using the h version as well. I had already viewed these
same messages using the g version but I downloaded h and
installed and I could still view the same messages. reading someone
elses message that it should use Microsoft API rather than
internal I changed the settings. I can still read the messages. The
only difference I have noticed is that before, using internal the
message signature always appeared as invalid signature now using
Microsoft API it shows to be a valid signature... So at least
this seems to be a improvement. I have absolutely no problems with
h thus far. Virus detection plug in isolated and quaranteened two
messages which I have since deleted. Everything seems to be working
  great.

Info on Upgrades

2002-04-28 Thread Julius S.

Hi there,

1.) As a paid registered user of 1.60C Personal. Can I d/l 1.60h and NOT get into a
30-day trial
loop again?

2.) Tips would be appreciated on how to install h over c. Maybe a ref or FAQ is
available on this?

3.) I didn't get Installation Wizard when I ran my initial d/l of the_bat.exe
and installed it manually (19 Apr). Working OK, but I think things are wrong or
missing...
like I don't get tooltips on any bat screen. But all my files are accessible Ok,
including Help. Uninstall doesn't seem to exist for this program. My OS is MS-Me...
Have been using since last August, with OE.
Ideas on uninstall and install h. Or what?

 Thanks

 Julius

Re[2]: PGP or S/MIME ?

2002-04-28 Thread Greg Strong

Hello Allie,

ACM I'd always use PGP/GnuPG if I could help it.

I was installing WinPT. In the PDF file for the install it refers to
OpenPGP that I believe is GPG (i.e. same as GnuPG at
http://www.gnupg.org/).

What functionality specifically does Ritlabs mean on their website at
http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/features.html by saying Internal (no
DLLs needed) fast PGP implementation based on the award-winning
OpenSSL lets you encrypt message and sign them with digital
signatures. Also available as a free stand-alone Digital Keys Library.
Handy manager for digital keys. Free plugins for PGP v5.5, v6.0.2
6.5.?

I know SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer which is different from
encryption, but if you follow the OpenSSL link it goes on to state
...as well as a full-strength general purpose cryptography library.
It seems to infer there maybe some functionality I'm missing here
which is why I ask the question.

To my knowledge I have to use the Tray windows application to
manually sign messages when using GPG. Reading this list I believe you
can have on the fly seamless signing with PGP which to my knowledge is
owned by NAI. Please clarify. TIA!
