of Camp Wood. You have to climb partially up a small mountain to the entrance.
Not easy to find due to the small entrance and vegetation. A nice easy walking

My daughters and I made a raft trip from Lajitas thru Santa Elena Canyon in
April, 1979. Not guided, we just rented a raft. We stayed at the fairly new
Cavalry Post motel in Lajitas and while there experienced a somewhat severe

They probably were but without a sanctioning body or organization and caving
information was mostly word of mouth between spelunkers ( not cavers). My first
non commercial cave was Frio Cave on the Annandale Ranch near Concan in 1953 at

I'm with Charles. The convention held at Ft. Clark several years ago was the
best and the area had everything. What a beautiful paradise. Some may think it
is too far west but it is worth the drive. It would also encourage more
participants from the western parts of the state.

am not a rock climber but have never seen this technique. He puts a lot of
faith in these hand tools but they seem to be most effective. Thanks!

I agree! This is a compilation of the best caving (spelunking) stories I have
ever read. Now Helmer can be recognized for his storytelling as well as his
early Texas Caver art work.
I can relate as I first started spelunking in the early 1950's with my first
wild cave being Frio Bat Cave in

Seems to me that Mr. Ackerman's caves could be donated to the NSA, a
