If I had to guess, given that I don't use trisquel anymore, it probably has a year before being stable. As for when its beta, who knows... Don't ever, ever upgrade to alpha operating systems unless you know the risks. Just a heads up.

Java is a huge vector for insecurity anyhow... Although if you need it bad enough, I suppose you could use Basilisk Browser and put it on that. I don't recommend it at all though. Java is after all one of the oldest most insecure vectors for malware. ;)

Truecrypt, was only ever useful for proprietary operating systems. If I remember correctly, but in all honesty, dmcrypt and luks should be sufficient for now. :) The best way to encrypt files, is with GPA + a gnu privacy guard ECC key. Of course you can't lose that key obviously... :)

Hexchat is what I use too! Agree wholeheartedly that xchat is not to be used. I wondered why it was in trisquel 7, when it was said to have freedom issues. I forget where I read they had freedom issues...

Two options seem to exist, Coreboot + me cleaner... or libreboot. At least as x86 goes... Otherwise its Risc-V future or ARM within reason of course... OR powerpc if you have a lot of money. Those are your options for newer technology I believe. Although some of them probably won't be
