[Trisquel-users] Trisquel-mini ( lxde) with Compiz + Emerald (tutorial)
Compiz + Emerald is not dead ! Many users will run this for many years. I just finished to write a tutorial abut how to install Compiz + Emerald on Trisquel-mini which is based on Lxde desktop. The tutorial is for version Trisquel 6.0 Toutatis based on Ubuntu or Lubuntu 12.04. The tutorial is on documentation wiki into Manuals - Configuration with the title: Compiz Emerald in Trisquel-mini (lxde) http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/compiz-emerald-trisquel-mini-lxde Feel free to modify the tutorial because my English language is not so good
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-mini ( lxde) with Compiz + Emerald (tutorial)
actually, Emerald IS dead. Recommending a non-supported piece of software, probably isn't the greatest idea. Just saying.

Normally you wouldn't receive help for such problems here, because using proprietary software is your own problem, but since you are a newcomer and you are considering/decided to give up free software at all, the following might help. I've seen something similar last year as a part of educational project in a high school. GNU/Linux was installed side by side to some version of Windows, which wasn't able to boot. The problem was in the NTFS partition that Windows used. We were able fix it from GNU/Linux by running some NTFS-related utilities. I assume (I forgot) they were the ntfsfix and ntfsck programs coming from the ntfs-3g package. If that is the case, you probably can't mount the NTFS partition on GNU/Linux. Assuming the device is sda and the Windows partition is the first one: sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda12048 409599 203776 86 NTFS volume set ... sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt _Some error_ or sudo ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /mnt _Some error_ If it mounts, unmount the partition with: sudo umount /mnt If there is no error you can still try to fix the partition with ntfsfix. Try the dry-run first. sudo ntfsfix -n /dev/sda1 If there is nothing scary looking, execute the command without the -n option. sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda1 Try the ntfsck program as well sudo ntfsck /dev/sda1 Reboot. If you don't use any specialized software on Windows you should be able to live without it. It will be a little awkward at the beginning. That is all. Good luck. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part
Re: [Trisquel-users] gluglug thinkpad x60 w/ coreboot mini review
I bought one too from Francis Rowe and wrote a review. I'm going to quote it here since it's relevant and may have useful information: I ordered an x60 with 3GB ram and 120GB SSD from the Gluglug before Christmas. The Fedex shipment arrived to Finland a couple of days later. Here are my first impressions and final review: 1) After charging the laptop and booting, I am greeted by GRUB2 with a levitating meditating gnu background 2) The Gluglug had installed coreboot without its binary blobs and replaced the wireless card with a free software compatible one, meaning that the machine ran on completely open source software respecting the user's privacy and inteligence. Considering this, it is a huge positive surprise how well everything works on this machine! Function keys, Wi-Fi, indicator leds, the pointing stick, suspend and the battery all work as expected right from the start. The only thing not working is changing the screen brightness, which stays fixed at 100%. 3) The laptop comes with Trisquel 6 Toutatis preinstalled, but for anyone wanting to set up their installation themselves it is not a huge effort: copy the X60_source.tar.gz file to a safe place (it contains all the source code for the coreboot version in the machine), grab the newest Trisquel (or any distribution you like) iso from the internet, flash it to an USB thumbdrive and boot from it in GRUB. There you go. A note of warning for the novices: I had problems when flashing the iso using the Startup Disk Creator tool in Trisquel. The Gluglug helped me gladly and actually there is a readme with all the details on installing another distribution inside the X60_source.tar.gz archive. 4) This laptop got the Free Software Foundation's Respects your freedom certificate recently: http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom 5) If you are reading this review, it means you must have at least a small interest in free software. If you are like me and have never used GNU/Linux before, give it a shot! It's wonderful to see how the GNU world has evolved tools and software for most tasks. However, if you have a very specific need, ask around before commiting to GNU/Linux. These are the things I've struggled a bit with: - watching youtube or other flash videos online: for this you should disable gnash, the GNU flash player in the browser, as it rarely works. Then follow instructions either here (http://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom) or here (https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/play-videos-without-using-flash). For now I am using the Linterna Mágica approach from the second link. It works almost always, but on some videos you have to wait a while for the Greasemonkey script to load. - watching encrypted DVDs: some commercially sold DVDs are encrypted, and to watch them using mplayer you have to install libdvdcss (which can't be included in the distribution because of some US laws). Read here: https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/enable-dvd-playback. - Many of the software in the Trisquel depositories is outdated, but almost all open source software have a readme indicating how to compile it. Compiling may sound daunting if you come from the Windows world, but it really just boils down to following simple instructions line-by-line. My final verdict: this laptop is a must for anyone interested in GNU/Linux and free software. As far as I know, it is the only x86 based computer in the world running completely on free software (including boot code and drivers). For other people, it is a very small and hassle-free investement for a linux laptop without glitches.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wireless laptop
Strange all right. What kind of a wifi do you have? Open a terminal and inputlspci(You can filter out anything but the wifi if you can figure out which one it is.) Since you say it's new, perhaps it would be worth while to try a new Linux-libre kernel, e.g. from http://jxself.org/linux-libre/
Re: [Trisquel-users] New User Problems
-.- they did again... the free software Pharisees with their I know better attitude, just turned another person away from Trisquel OS/ Trisquel Community. Seriously, you guys can't think about the people before you think of the software?? It was a man who was trying to use free software and you made him go back to windows because you thought it's good that he can't boot windows, even if he probably needed to boot windows to use his computer until he got the hang of things on Trisquel! Even worse, it was an older person who should have been treated with a little bit more respect! I am probably angry about the fact that he rejected free software and not just Trisquel, people here actually worked AGAINST the free software movement, and ANY free software project out there. hamptondav, if you still come here again and would like to give it another go, I would be happy to help you. Just ignore the trolls here who think everyone should run free software even if they can't run it. Re: [Trisquel-users] Need help with GPG/Enigmail/Torbirdy

Re: [Trisquel-users] Is ethic really good argument for FLOSS?
I got it now. Your definition of freedom is so slippery that you just call the lack of freedom sometimes slavery, sometimes hierarchy or being a team, just which of the names suits you best in order to rationalize your behaviour. You never provided any real arguments about the differences of the three. I think every reader recognizes this and if you don't provide a few concrete definitions and point out in a clear way why the animal in a tribe has freedom because he can try to overthrow the leadership but people in tyrannic countries have not, then your lack of arguments is obvious for everyone and my work is done.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Handbrake 0.9.9 on Toutatis
I never said that the GPL was non-free. Please don't put words in my mouth. I compared HandBrake with Linux-Libre, which are licensed under GPLv2. Therefore calling HandBrake non-free can be applied to Linux-Libre too. The problem with HandBrake is in providing a static executable, rather than just linking to the non-free library externally (like Zandronum). Therefore the application should be adapted to use this library optionally, when available, thus satisfying both parties. (the rest) I already know about this (look at the top of this page), and althrough you're technically right, in other words, every free software project, that contains a part that does not meet the DFSG requirement, even when it's a small part that can be easily removed (even without modifying the source code), is considered non-free (aka proprietary). The problem was that calling a project that's developing a free code only (FAAC is not a part of the project, even not the source code), is simply inadeqate, and the possible users/customers may get a false belief, that the whole program is non-free. Therefore, using terms like not completely freedom respecting, or partially free software is more appropriate here.
Re: [Trisquel-users] HP Chromebook 14
X60 has no ME, it's only for devices with newer Intel chipsets (using the PCH). ME blob is stored in the same Flash chip as the BIOS/coreboot in newer systems. Ethernet cards too can have nonfree firmware. It's not normally updated, while it can have bugs http://blog.krisk.org/2013/02/packets-of-death.html which can be used for DoS attacks against the device using it. Disks have firmware too. RYF certainly allows these, since they are separate enough from the CPU and no updates are recommended by the vendor. I don't know what security and privacy issues result from running ME firmware nor how different it is from one with AMT. Native VGA init is available for Chromebook Pixel and ARM Chromebooks. https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/platform/ec/+/master/board/ might list boards with free EC. I haven't checked the code nor looked for documentation showing that it's used. (VGA init can be freed, a skilled hacker could make these as free as X201.) pgpaPY0Sr8xlU.pgp Description: PGP signature

Re: [Trisquel-users] Using the GPL for soundfonts
I have no experience with sound synthesis. Maybe these comments on the use of GPL for non-program works can be useful. GPL works for nonsoftware works, while itt has requirements that might be too inconvenient for some cultural works: the license text must be included with the work, source must be provided in one of specific ways, etc. Including license text could be a problem for a small visual work. Source provision should be easy with GPL3 (both binary and source available via the network, or physical copy of the binary with a written offer to download the source), while distributing a book under GPL2 would require including machine-readable media with the source (e.g. a CD) or a written offer to get such medium. For many works source and binary are the same. I think it's not a reason to not use the GPL for these. There might be many works under free and GPL-incompatible licenses like CC-BY-SA that could be useful to merge with your work into a derivative. This can be a good reason to choose one of these licenses, or dual-license your work under GPL and other licenses. (There are blogs with articles trilicensed under GPL, FDL and CC-BY-SA for this reason.) There can be special issues for works that are used to make works of different types. E.g. fonts are programs that are often embedded in documents, GPL-only fonts probably cannot be embedded in documents under FDL or CC-BY-SA, so GPL with font embedding exception or a license specifically designed for fonts is used. Do these issues occur with soundfonts? pgpjX2YJf3agk.pgp Description: PGP signature
Re: [Trisquel-users] Handbrake 0.9.9 on Toutatis
Therefore, using terms like not completely freedom respecting, or partially free software is more appropriate here. Yep, and I no longer use terms like calling a program semifree: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/categories.html#ProprietarySoftware
Re: [Trisquel-users] Handbrake 0.9.9 on Toutatis
One important thing I forgot to add is that, from my experience, there are two main categories of partially free software: one that can be liberated, and one that cannot be The first category make use of parts, that can be cut out without seriously affecting the program functionality (e.g. HandBrake, PlayOnLinux). The other one is built around a non-free binary, or code, which is essential for proper operation (e.g. f.lux indicator applet, XaraLX). This is the main reason why calling the second category simply non-free software isn't a good idea.

For the administration of Debian (or Debian-based systems such such as Trisquel), you can read The Debian Administrator's Handbook, which is either (at your choice) under the CC-BY-SA license or under the GNU GPL license: http://debian-handbook.info
Re: [Trisquel-users] Handbrake 0.9.9 on Toutatis
The key factor here is the dfsg in the package name. That represents changes being made, by the debian packager to remove the non-free elements, to make it Debian Free Software Guidlines acceptable. Reading the changelog we can see the non-free stuff is being removed. NO comment on the ubuntu package(s). So, I'd say that debian's handbrake-dfsg package IS free, but I also agree with jxself's argument that this boarders on suggesting non-free software...

Re: [Trisquel-users] You might be using a google name server
removing the package resolvconf will restore /etc/resolv.conf to it's old behaviour - in the process it will even remove the DO NOT EDIT message in the file. but, removing this package may (or may not) be trivial... on my netinst install without DE metapackages, it works great, YMMV.

Problem: using network briding with tun/tap, requires root permission - not great when you need to start KVM VMs with root/sudo, I'd like to avoid this. NON-SOLUTION (for me): using KVM with libvirt WILL work around this issue - but I DO NOT want to use libvirt (period, please don't suggest it) Background: this is NOT a Tisquel specific issue (Debian squeeze wheezy had the same issue) WHAT HAPPENS: if i start KVM VMs with root permission, then my br0 is correctly used to create TUN interfaces for the VMs. As a regular user, various permission denied error(s) - regarding the creation of the TUN interfaces. On the sexy/ist wallpapers it's as you say but also: To make a sexy wallpaper to advertize Trisquel differs from making a sexy wallpaper for masturbation. Obviously the wallpaper won't get a title like we made this but don't think as a sexist wallpaper. So it would be up the viewers mind if that wallpaper is sexy or sexist. And that's also why you say that a sexy wallpaper is necesary sexist, I just claim that's not the idea or concept of but it's its result depent on viewers mind. This almost off topic too. Maybe someone should open a thread to know argument on this issue.

Re: [Trisquel-users] New User Problems
Well, I suppose you and a few others would love to see me out of here, but as I have said before, that is not happening... so back off! -.^ As for the thread itself, guess what, he asked IN THE RIGHT FORUM, because Trisquel was the reason that his boot process broke! Now, we know that M$ has no interest in dual booting, but from a user point of view, windows is working, I install trisquel, windows works no more, trisquel did someting wrong. Right?? So, he asked here. Yes many people tried to help, I am not saying the entire group was wrong with the newcomer. I am saying that the mindset it's your problem because it's proprietary software and we shouldn't help you running windows only run trisquel is wrong when pointed towards a newcomer! And let's be honest, jxself's comment was not a funny one liner. It was him (again) thinking only about run free software instead of thinking of the people behind the software! There are people here (he included) that will say you computer is not working properly? but is it running free software? GREAT, YOU HAVE FREEDOM REJOICE. Don't you see that acting like that is being (for the lack of a better word) a douche? Especially for newcomers. People who I wish will use free software and turn away because they feel they are only important here when they say I run only FSF approved software. When they say I am running trisquel but I will get fired if I don't get this work done by tomorrow and need a piece of proprietary software to run, can you guys help me out please?? they are flamed and take the quit your job, work at a factory, be free speech. as I have said, I am not angry he turned away from Trisquel only, I am angry he turned away from free software at all! Read his post man, he was a 71 year old man, who was trying to use free software for the first time, aked for help, felt mistreated by us (the community) and decided not to use free software again! How can you say that is not something we should STOP AND THINK ABOUT? Don't you see that this time we SCREWED UP BIG TIME?? Even me, for not helping him (I only saw the thread after he quit unfortunately). So yeah, I am a part of this community and I also feel I was on the wrong with this person. Do you think the people who actually had a laugh at him were not worse? WE CAUSED a person to TURN AWAY from free software. Do you have any idea of the implications? What this thread did was the clear OPPOSITE os the FSF goal (bring people to free software). If that is not something for us to think about, I don't know what is And don't waste time replying to me, I won't reply to you, it's all here he who has hears, let him hear.

1) has the brightness issue been resolved? No and, AFAIK, no one is working on it. 2) what is the battery life like during idle, normal, and heavy use? I usually get about 2 hours from the 8-cell battery. I used to get more but the backlight at 100% all the time has reduced that.
