Re: [Trisquel-users] If Rubén harassed Libreboot's Leah Rowe, he should be fired and Trisquel shut down
Why are you beating this dead horse, and why are you name-dropping me? This is old news, we all know that Leah's allegations have no merit, and nothing new has happened related to it. I lost interest in it forever ago.
Re: [Trisquel-users] LAMP stack on Trisquel
You can also use LXD, Docker, Vagrant, virtual machines, and the like. Does anyone have a preferred container method they use routinely on Trisquel?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Scratch discussion: delete or not?
I know this isn't directly related to this post, but is there an Free Software alternative to Scratch 1.0 in the repos or available for download from somewhere? When I looked in the past, I didn't seem much and Scratch 1.0 is relatively limited, especially in comparison to 2.0 (or the version on MIT's website).
Re: [Trisquel-users] If Rubén harassed Libreboot's Leah Rowe, he should be fired and Trisquel shut down
"I don't think it fair to say that Leah is innocent. Even if she happens to be right about the reason, the way she deals with the situation and the way she communicates with people (her emails for example), that's not acceptable social behavior." @Mampir What about the way some of the folks responded to Leah? Is that acceptable social behavior? Why does it seem like you're giving them a pass? Shouldn't the way they communicate be called into question as well? I think so, especially the responses (and some of them have been in this forum) that focus on Leah's gender either by misgendering her or otherwise calling her gender into question. I think the organizations involved should investigate further and come to some resolution on this issue with Leah and the trans person in question BEFORE we conclude whether the way Leah and others communicated is acceptable social behavior. @Onpon4, what do you think?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
"I think part of the FSF missing something like "We believe in freedom and non-discrimination for that reason we will investigate the situation"" @Arder: Exactly! I'd add that it would also be comforting (yes onpon, I wrote comforting) for the Trisquel project to address this issue in some official way, as opposed to ignoring it as they seem to be doing. The organizations involved will benefit by being proactive about issues like this, regardless of the truth/falsity of Leah and Libreboot's accusations, in some official manner.
Re: [Trisquel-users] wi-fi crash and available space
The default install makes quite a small root partition. If you haven't done too much with your install yet, you might consider re-installing with either one partition or root+home with a large enough root. One partition is easier with regards to space management but on the other hand if you have a separate home it's easier to do re-installs or clean new version installs preserving the home partition...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which partitions are safe to delete?
Congratulations!
[Trisquel-users] Re : Which partitions are safe to delete?
GRUB's stage 1 must be stored in the MBR (the first sector, not a partition), GRUB's stage 1.5 still is before the first partition (that starts at sector 63) and GRUB's stage 2 is in /boot/grub, i.e., inside your partition number 6. So, you can only keep the partitions numbered 6, 7 (not actually required, you could have a swap file or not swap at all) and 8 for a working Trisquel. If you keep the partition number 4, I guess you want to enlarge it a little, taking the space currently occupied by partitions number 1, 2 and 3. Partition number 8 would take the space currently occupied by partition number 5. All that is easily done from Trisquel's live system, which includes GParted . An alternative is to backup all data on partitions 4 and 8 (you want backups anyway), redo the install choosing this time to take the whole disk and, once in the new system, restore the whole backup in the large (maybe 470 GB) /home partition that was created.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trouble getting nouveau to load instead of vesa for my nvidia 970
The bad is, that your GPU need signed Nvidia's firmware (more than non-free obviously). And deblobbed Linux won't give you that firmware, because is Nvidia's blob and it is missing. Your GPU can not to work properly without that signed firmware.
Re: [Trisquel-users] PayPal !!! ?
Maybe stas730 wants to use Trisquel CD's as currency.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Browsers keep crashing
Read my comment again. The comm-central repository (which openhub is looking at for Seamonkey) does not contain the Gecko code, which has to be fetched from the mozilla-central repository (the Firefox one). I don't doubt that Seamonkey is less bloated but it's not 20x less code.
Re: [Trisquel-users] wi-fi crash and available space
For the WiFi problem, run: $ dmesg | grep -i firmware What is the output?
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
The safest thing is to not use a computer at all.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
Being offline doesn't protect you from exploitation of back-doors. If you've got any mission critical data, the only way to be safe is to ensure your no non-free software EVER handles it unencrypted.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trouble getting nouveau to load instead of vesa for my nvidia 970
Well I did some more digging and found this post https://trisquel.info/en/forum/upgraded-video-card. Looks like I need to get an older nvidia card and check h-node to see what card I should buy. I'll keep this thread updated with what I end up getting. :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
The best idea is using offline computer. No network — no problem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo? Change to YaCy.
And that your storage medium is encrypted. Who knows what back-doors can be found in HDD/SSD firmware?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I installed librecmc on a new router, but the oddest thing happens
Try connecting with an ethernet cable instead of connecting wirelessly.
[Trisquel-users] Re : wi-fi crash and available space
You can start with the execution of this command in a terminal: $ sudo apt-get clean It removes the deb packages that were downloaded (and that would only be necessary in the future if they had to be reinstalled). Then, you can remove, e.g., with the "Synaptic Package Manager" (in the "System Settings"), the older kernels: the packages "linux-image-*", "linux-image-extra-*", "linux-headers-*, etc. Just keep the latest kernel (with the highest version number) and, maybe, the one before that if you are unsure whether all your hardware is properly driven buy the latest version. You can also consider the removal of programs that occupy much space. Typically video games. But show us the output of this command too: $ df -h If you chose too little space for the root partition, you would have to expand it, probably at the detriment of /home... which has, by default in Trisquel, a filesystem that cannot be shrunk, i.e., you would need to backup /home first so that /home can be deleted, / expanded and /home recreated (and the respective line in /etc/fstab edited accordingly). But, you certainly are a serious user who does regular backups anyway, aren't you? As for the Wifi, does it work when you are close to the hotspot? If not, it probably is not supported by Trisquel's kernel, which does not include any proprietary software (including firmware that Wifi chipsets increasingly require).
[Trisquel-users] Which partitions are safe to delete?
Hello, I need advice on deleting unnecessary partitions (and Windows, BTW). There is one 500 GB hard disk in my computer; on this disk I have Windows 10 which was installed first, and of course Trisquel :-) I was installing Trisquel to this disk on another computer. To boot Trisquel, I keep my BIOS boot mode set to Legacy (CSM); to boot Windows I switch it to UEFI. Now I want to get rid of Windows and delete the unnecessary partitions. The graphical view of my partitions is attached to this post. This is the output of sudo parted -l: Model: ATA ST500DM002-1BD14 (scsi) Disk /dev/sda: 500GB Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/4096B Partition Table: gpt Number Start End SizeFile system Name Flags 1 1049kB 1050MB 1049MB ntfs hidden, diag 2 1050MB 1322MB 273MB fat32 EFI system partition boot 3 1322MB 1456MB 134MB Microsoft reserved partition msftres 4 1456MB 389GB 388GB ntfsBasic data partition msftdata 6 389GB 409GB 20,0GB ext4 7 409GB 412GB 2406MB linux-swap(v1) 8 412GB 486GB 74,1GB xfs 5 486GB 500GB 14,1GB ntfs hidden, diag My question is: which of these partitions are safe to delete and be able to properly boot Trisquel? I'd like to keep only partitions: 4, 6, 7 and 8 + of course GRUB/boot partition, but I don't know which is it. From partition 4 (388 GB NTFS) I'd like to delete Windows folders manually and leave my data on it. Best regards, Marek

[Trisquel-users] Trouble getting nouveau to load instead of vesa for my nvidia 970
Hello! I'm completely new to Trisquel and libre software. I just did a fresh install of Trisquel 7 64 bit and everything went fine except my computer keeps using the basic vesa drivers instead of the nouveau ones. I updated all of my packages to the latest and even installed the latest linux-libre64 kernel. My Xorg.0.log shows that vesa is getting loaded. I went to the nouveau maintainer's website and looked at the trouble shooting section and tried their basic "4 line" x-server config but that didn't help me either. My graphics card is an nvidia gtx 970. I have attached my Xorg.0.log output in case anyone is interested in looking at it. Hopefully I'm just missing something obvious or my card won't work with the free software drivers. If so, I'll have to look into purchasing another graphics card since I don't want to run any proprietary drivers. [Trisquel-users] wi-fi crash and available space
Hi, First, i would want to fix a problem of free space in the root field. I get a message which said that 0ko are available in the main field (roots field) i guess. But my computer has 120GO and its a new installation. i just make the commons upgrades after the installation of the OS (i delete Windows, i think) My other problem comes from the WI-fi. I m working with network manager gnome i guess. This tool said to me that my Box internet is out of reach. In fact, the connection wi-fi works with my others devices ... TY in advance

We must accept only FREE as in freedom currency. The PayPal system admin can create money in PayPal or transfer it (money).
Re: [Trisquel-users] I installed librecmc on a new router, but the oddest thing happens
Probably you have installed librecmc build which does not contain luci web interface. If that is so, you can still connect via telnet/ssh and set up the wifi router by editing the config files in console through vi editor

Re: [Trisquel-users] Unetbootin
I **guess** it does, specially since GNU `dd` is specialized in copying things verbatim. Some years ago, I made an experiment comparing the behavior of Trisquel live USB when copying using "Disk Creator", and after tests, copying using GNU `dd`. Using the later results in more speed and **can** prevent problems when installing the GRUB boot loader during the installation of the whole system. signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Re: [Trisquel-users] suggestion for the forum page
Hmm, I am having a different kind of issue lately: the page doesn't refresh correctly - I'll try to make my self clear: it used to be that when I read a thread marked with "new" and went back to the topic menu, that thread would no longer be marked with new. Now I need to F5.. Minor issue but annoyance, meh.

Re: [Trisquel-users] debian 8, can not installed non free software stop graphic to work?
contrib and non-free are, you guess it, repositories that contain non-free software. I think you know that as to have them enabled you had to manually edit the sources, but it is good to point out that once you install a non free package from these repos your freedom has gone out of the window. Usually freedom tends to go out when you open Windows (pun intended). You GPU is an ATI and those require non-free firmware to work. Debian's kernel is de-blobbed, meaning there is no non-free proprietary firmware, hence your GPU does not work at all or at best, it will work but display the max screen resolution supported by your BIOS (usually 1024*768) and not the max one of your monitor (say 1600*900). You will also miss 3d acceleration, which means you will have bad time, bad time and frustration. Either change hardware (real solution) or fetch the non-free firmware for your GPU. That is up to you, it's you PC, your decision.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unetbootin
In the guide for installing Libreboot only the dd-way is mentioned. Would it make a difference to the success of the installation whether I use Unetbootin or dd?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Unetbootin
Unetbootin has three advantages from my point of view: 1) I'm familiar with it 2) Using it, one can create space in order to use the usb stick as a portable, i.e. I can save files on the stick for later use 3) It's quite straightforward and stable (not 100% though) It seems that the 'Startup Disk Creator' of Trisquel allows for additional space up to 1 GB (according to https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/how-create-liveusb) Does the dd-way create extra space?
