Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
The Pandora can definitely be run with only free software and offer the functionality you desire- OnPon4 and JadedCtrl both did (do?) this. The GPU and wireless card both can't be used, although you can do graphics on the CPU and use a USB wifi adapter to get around these- the internal wifi's apparently quite poor anyway. though. The biggest problem with the Pandora, I suspect, is actually finding one for sale. I might have a look into the Zipit and see what I can find on freedom.

Re: [Trisquel-users] trouble configuring nordvpn/openvpn
ok, that worked certificates installed, I verified with synaptic package manger as well. now I'm trying to configure my vpn in network manager using password authentication, I've selected the server I want to connect to in etc/openvpn file. trying to find the cooresponding ca-certificate and can't find it. the file is empty for openvpn. How to do I find the certificate?

Add "sudo " before "apt-get install ca-certificates". Or use a graphical interface (e.g., the "Synaptic Package Manager" in the "System Settings") if you prefer.

I'm sure there are lots of people who live full and complete lives without being tracked or handling phone calls everywhere they go. I like using bluetooth earphones or headphones on the go. I am thinking of carrying a computer folded in a backpack, running free software and supplying me with audio via bluetooth. Is there an obvious reason why this would not work? If you want to listen to audio you can find small unnetworked digital audio players that will fit in your pocket and work with wired headphones. This approach will let you avoid broadcasting your audio via Bluetooth. Check out the https://www.rockbox.org/ firmware (licensed under the GNU GPL v2 or later) for supported devices. Perhaps there is an inexpensive used digital audio player you can upgrade with Rockbox so you can pay less, get something Rockbox supports, and avoid paying the manufacturer while gaining the practical benefits of that device.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
Is there such a thing as a PDA or other small, non-telephone device that can run a free operating system with JMP, an email client, and maybe some kind OpenStreeMap viewer? For me and probably some others that would replace pretty much everything I use my phone for.

Thanks all for all the comments. I think I have to change the following things in my lifestyle to make it coherent with principles: Buy a computer with free booting firmware and fully free operating system. Get a paid account on posteo. Ditch the tracker and get a phone number on the computer (JMP).

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
You are... Wrong again :/ From Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone_tracking Mobile phone tracking is the ascertaining of the position or location of a mobile phone, whether stationary or moving. Localization may occur either via multilateration of radio signals between (several) cell towers of the network and the phone, or simply via GPS. To locate a mobile phone using multilateration of radio signals, it must emit at least the roaming signal to contact the next nearby antenna tower, but the process does not require an active call. I recommend you to read the "Privacy" section of that Wikipedia article. Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
What a mistake, cellphones are tracking devices, they can be tracked even if they are not smartphones, companies and government can know where is your phone all the time. Replicant is just a libre operating system but it won't stop government tracking. The same way a libre operating system with a libre browser won't stop government or your ISP from tracking you.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel won't boot on a Thinkpad 11E
I cannot get the Trisquel image, published in June, to boot on anything. For yesterday's post, I was ufing the image made in April, which does boot on machines that do not have UEFI. In my testing of Uruk 2 Alpha, I find that Orca screen reader will not work; I hear the welcome message but orca will not read the screen, and it turns off within about 30 seconds. I wrote about this on the Uruk mailing list, but have not yet heard an answer.
[Trisquel-users] Re : Trisquel won't boot on a Thinkpad 11E
Hi Dave ;-) Didn't you try with Uruk 2 Alpha recently ? This comment however seems to confirm what you are experiencing, ie I can confirm that the Trisquel iso image, while written successfully, won't boot. The resulting usb stick is not bootable, at least in a UEFI environment.I tried Debian 9.01 Mate. It works as expected with the same dd command on the same usb device https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/new-trisquel-8-alpha-images?page=1#comment-116979
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
"How can I live without a mobile phone then? Is it inconvenient?" It may not be convenient but Stallman does it, so it is clearly doable. He gets around the entire planet on his various speaking trips without a cell phone. "I like using bluetooth earphones or headphones on the go. I am thinking of carrying a computer folded in a backpack, running free software and supplying me with audio via bluetooth. Is there an obvious reason why this would not work?" I think that would work very well. You may also want to look into https://jmp.chat/ which is run by our very own free software person Denver Gingerich. You get a phone number, and do your calls using XMPP/Jabber. Denver gave a talk about this at the FSF's yearly LibrePlanet conference this last March. It was called "A fully-free cell phone experience, no baseband required" and can be seen at https://media.libreplanet.org/u/libreplanet/m/a-fully-free-cell-phone-experience-no-baseband-required/
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
As for E-Ink devices, there is a Debian-based free software (with the exception of the WiFi firmware, which you can remove) stack for Kobo e-readers: https://github.com/lgeek/okreader. I think that is probably the best option. I am planning to get one of these for myself.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free

Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
> I am thinking of carrying a computer folded in a backpack, running free software and supplying me with audio via bluetooth. So you want to use voice over ip or wouldn't it be a problem for you to not being reachable via mobile calls? I didn't have a mobile for years when everybody else had one. And I did like it. Unfortunately my boss is insisting that I carry such a tracking device with me because he wants to reach me and I should check if the web pages we create run smoothly on such devices also. I didn't object since he is paying the bill. But I would like to get rid of my mobile again as soon as this isn't the case any more. I didn't miss the opportunity to call people on the move before mobile phones where common. And I am still not convinced if they cause more good than harm.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free

[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 Flidas - Where to submit feature requests/bugs?
1) During update of Flidas beta, the kernel is refered to as "linux", which as we know is non-Free. I think this dialogue ought to be edited so that a Free kernel is specified, such as "linux-libre". Try: uname -r The response is (worryingly) 4.4.0-79-generic 2) Flidas should support installation of a wider variety of DTEs (Desk Top Environments). I would like to see KDE and LXQt available, too. (The lightweight LXQt makes older hardware a lot more responsive.) The Mate DTE on the Flidas Beta looks good and appears to work well. 3) calamares https://calamares.io Calamares offers useful installation functionality and I think Trisquel should make use of this. It a standardized installation platform for different operating systems. The (non-Free) Chakra Linux has especially useful method to target a specific partition for installation. Please use the same code (which is Free). 4) Thanks to everybody for working on this new release of Trisquel GNU/Linux!
Re: [Trisquel-users] How to be free
I'm 24, owned a Samsung Galaxy S3 with Replicant for a month, then did away with it for these same concerns. In my entire life, that is the only time I've owned a smartphone, and I'm fine without it. Have also been without Facebook for almost a year. As for the eink device. I looked into that myself one time, I don't think there are any that fit the criteria. I'd really like one too though, so if you learn anything, let me know.
[Trisquel-users] How to be free
After reading about the situation with mobile phones and free software, I've come to the conclusion that they are trackers. How can I live without a mobile phone then? Is it inconvenient? I like using bluetooth earphones or headphones on the go. I am thinking of carrying a computer folded in a backpack, running free software and supplying me with audio via bluetooth. Is there an obvious reason why this would not work? Is there a e ink device that respects our freedom as users? Can we modify a Amazon Swindle to be 100% percent sure it runs only free software and it doesnt do anything nasty? Could we buy an e ink device with only free software directly?
Re: [Trisquel-users] low priced devices which surveillance you
As Magic Banana said, Stallman's concern is more to do with the network structure than the freedom of the device itself- and indeed, a fully free phone is (theoretically) possible. In regards to OsmocomBB, I'm honestly not sure how complete or active it is either. I suspect it is in a working state, but the whole thing is likely too complex, convoluted, and questionably legal to attract significant attention.
[Trisquel-users] Re : low priced devices which surveillance you
Aside from the phone actually spying on it's users, metadata correlation, network, tringualtion, isp.. Invisible Infrastructures : Surveillance Architecture https://labs.rs/en/invisible-infrastructures-surveillance-achitecture/ let’s start from the beginning and explain the way a device connects to a network, or rather how it authenticates itself on the network. For the purpose of authentication the device uses 2 ID numbers, the first one is the device’s IMEI number (International Mobile Station Equipment Identity), and the SIM card’s IMSI number (International Mobile Subscriber Identity). Both numbers are unique and predefined for every device/SIM card. The mobile carriers have an infrastructures of Base Stations (BS) that are geographically distributed throughout the area that’s being served by the operator
