Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
But anyway you are of course free to install your favourite desktop using apt, simply you are not forced to be stuck at LXDE if uncomfortable. I would like to recommend LXQt.
[Trisquel-users] Running Parabola, Devuan, PureOS, Trisquel, Hyperbola for very different desktops
In different libre system I run very different desktops, just a kindly sharing here, Parabola: LXQt and Liri, all in Qt in this systems which I need to receive the latest Qt tech here, with just GParted, AbiWord, Gnumeric from GNOME w/o Qt alternatives. GNOME and the most forked desktops are conflicted against your-privacy due to geoclue2. Devuan, PureOS, Trisquel: I'm different using which desktops in these systems, but I install LXQt in both systems, alongside the default desktops for these systems, since I'm also an Qt small world workstation advocate. Hyperbola: Cinnamon, GNOME, MATE, Deepin, Budgie, LXDE, all in Gtk+ in this system which I need a stable environment for my practical tasks, just like from Devuan and Trisquel, though unlikely I'm indifferent for desktops in Devuan and Trisquel. Hyperbola removes geoclue2 deps which I dnt mind using Gtk+ desktops and internet apps in this system. For init systems I need to endorse OpenRC for Parabola and Devuan, which the full Parabola installer is using systemd, but systemd has plenty cons. Devuan has told to me they're defaulting to OpenRC but unfortunately their install medium is not doing such. Finally, for display managers I would recommend SDDM which is X and Wayland compatible and littlely Qt-written, which meets my need for a Qt small world workstation. GDM is also small but unfortunately part of GNOME, just like Epiphany (GNOME web) the web browser.
[Trisquel-users] Newbie trying to load Trisquel on Acer Computer.
Recently bought an el cheapo Acer Aspire 1 (computer not chrome-book) with long battery life & zero memory for when I'm away from home needing wifi. Came with a disgusting spy-prog installed, called 'Windows 10'. Up until now I've begrudgingly used Windows 7. A friend suggested Trisquel as the simplest, most ethical alternative & said that as the Acer had Intel Graphics it would work fine. I installed Trisq7 on a stick (pendrive linux, steep learning curve for me) & it boots up on my home laptop (though poor graphics & runs very hot - I'm told due to AMD). Nonetheless, on start up it gives you the option to load Trisquel. However with the Acer Aspire 1 it just goes straight to Windows 10 without any options. Seeing as Trisquel may work the Acer unit, can anyone point me in the right direction to sort this? Linux is new to me, so need a simple step by step explanation. Mini troll/rant: I've always known Windows was back-doored (=same Macs). Tech never my strong point, I could just about live with Windows up to 7. After seeing 10 though, with all the Normie crap it just shoves in your face, I'm so disgusted I'm now committed to never using any Gates sh-- ever again (unless I have to for work). According to friend, I can't use Trisquel successfully on my home PC because of AMD. This is a shame. There must be millions with AMD out there + thousands like me who'd welcome a practical ethical OS if it was painless to install/use. Not all of us have the minds for tech or the time to spend on it. At least I know what not to buy in future if I'm to use Trisquel. The Forum looks very helpful, apart from a few effective trolls. No doubt total sad-asses, maybe sitting in some NSA/GCHQ basement somewhere. I'll contribute financially.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
Since my last post, I managed to get a bootable system by extracting the .iso archive onto a formatted flash drive, having one FAT partition, taking up the whole disk. Once I booted this version, I tried running the screen reader, and got it started, only to have it turn off within 5 seconds, or so. I tried using the toggle shortcut, 'alt+super+s' and by using the 'run' dialogue and typing "orca", then hitting 'enter'. I tried several reboots, waiting different amounts of time before starting orca, perhaps the desktop wasn't ready? Still no joy. Is anyone else using orca on this edition?
Re: [Trisquel-users] dependency-problem while updating
Hello davidpgil, i know. Still after rebooting the same error occured again. But after my last login (the computer was a few hours shut down) everything works fine. Thanks a lot!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Friday meeting
Thanks. I advocate Evolution anyway, although I'd prefer it be named "Overview" to better suggest that it's an Outlook clone. Are there any freedom issues with Evolution?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
"Given that Trisquel, like its Ubuntu base, is meant to be the most user-friendly distro for people new to GNU-Linux," I would say Trisquel is meant to be the most user-friendly distro that is fully free. That last clause matters a lot, since there are other distros that put user-friendliness (defined by ease of use rather than respecting the user's freedom and privacy) above all other considerations. One benefit of using MATE is that it should be fairly easy to shift the look and feel of the user interface to match what users accustomed to other OSes expect. The default of course strongly resembles Windows, especially Windows 95 through Vista. MATE (at least the version in Ubuntu MATE) has a "Panels" dropmenu in the MATE Tweak tool's "Interface" portion that lets you switch to a Mac-like look and feel ("Cupertino") or Ubuntu-style ("Mutiny"). Does Trisquel 8's implementation of MATE have this? I would also recommend a "Mountain View" option that replicates the ChromeOS or Chromium OS look and feel.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
I downloaded the 64-bit version from Jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/RC/ and wrote it to flash drive using the 'dd' command; resulting image is not bootable. I used http in the browser, which works for all other distros' live images but Trisquel.

It says something about the "device or resource" being "busy". Please excuse me, but have you already tried rebooting and upgrading again? Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
I'm also getting a weird issue with downloading trisquel_8.0_i686.iso from: http://jenkins.trisquel.info/makeiso/iso/RC/ I've tried it twice, and both times, it almost downloaded, then displayed an error in the ABrowser downloads menu, saying "file moved or missing". I haven't moved the file, and it's not missing, there's a 2.6GB file with that name in my Downloads folder. But running md5sum on that file gives me a hash that doesn't match the md5sum file downloaded from the same source. I have almost 90GB free on my drive, so that's not the problem. I'm mystified. Could it be that too many of us are hitting that server, causing downloads to fail? Is there another download source I could try? What's really strange is that I successfully downloaded the Sugar edition from the same source, and the download completed and passed the md5sum just fine. I made a bootable USB with the Startup Disc Creator in System Settings, and booted into a live system just fine too (first time I've managed to get a Sugar DE working, yay!).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
LXDE
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel-Mini Desktop Environment
Just out of curiosity, what DE was chosen for Trisquel-Mini 8? I did a search on this site and a web search, but couldn't find anything. I intend to test Trisquel-Mini once I've tested the standard T8 release. If it's LXDE/QT, I think I'll stick with the Mate DE of standard. I've found LXDE a bit too restrictive, and I'm sceptical about whether I'd enjoy LXQT any better, unless it's substantially more evolved than the last LXDE I tested (Peppermint 3). I'd still love to see a Trisquel-Mini based on a version of the Enlightenment DE, whether a recent version (E22 just came out recently), or an E17 fork like the Moksha DE developed for Bodhi. https://www.enlightenment.org/ http://www.bodhilinux.com/
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
InfraRecorder works just fine with win 10. It's practical because it need not be installed. There's a zip portable archive.

Software dos not necessarily stop working because it is old. If there is usable free software to install the live ISO, let us recommend that! We value freedom over convenience.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which is the easiest way of making an .html file with Trisquel Belenos?
@ mason, loldier, Magic Banana Thank you very much. The data and questions with which you have contributed, have encouraged me to deepen my studies on .html editing. Considering the set of options I already knew and the new ones that you have suggested, I think, that for the time being, the best substitutes for my Seamonkey dependent Compose is a combination of LibreOffice Writter and Abrowser's Web developer tools. Thank you all for trying to help

OK. The situation is the same as with Office documents (except that an Office document is a more effective vector of malware): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro_virus So, do whatever you do when you open an Office document.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
Windows 10 burning an image is easy. Just open Explorer, right-click on the ISO and select 'Burn to disc'. Pix to follow if somebody needs them to write up instructions.

Thank you both for your speedy speedy replies. martinh> what is a PPD ? A postscript printer description file(PPD). Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
On a side note, I know this has been said a hundred times, but whoever used the downvote button on my posts, stop doing that. That button was added to mark spam and rule-breaking posts, not disagreement. I disagree with its existence, but as long as it's there, please do not abuse it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
Please do not ignore context. I said there's no use for a *libre version* of PlayOnLinux, because the whole point of it is to play proprietary games. If PlayOnLinux doesn't have its installation recipes and configuration values for proprietary Windows-only games, it does nothing for you, because that's the whole point of using it. If you're only playing libre games, PlayOnLinux does nothing for you, because you can just use a repository.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Does PlayOnLinux work with Trisquel 8?
Probably because the software that removes HTML tags interprets it as one (since an HTML tag begins with a less-than sign).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
What’s up with this devel not found? I get this when attempting to initiate a download from the RC link.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 codename "Flidas" Release Candidate is ready for testing
My wife has a Mac (running El Capitan), which I can use (with her permission) to test the MacOS instructions. We no longer own any devices running Windows (yay!), but I'm sure there are GNUbies out there who still have a dual-boot, or run Windows on a separate PC. Anybody willing to do some testing and help update the wiki if needed? It would be good to make sure the instructions work for 2000/XP, Vista/7, and 8/10, with separate instructions for different versions if needed. Burning .ISO to CD I note that the code of Infrarecorder, the app recommended for burning the .ISO on Windows, doesn't appear to have been worked on since 2012 according to its GitHub repo: https://github.com/kindahl/infrarecorder There is a FOSSHub page last updated in 2014, which suggests it worked then on all Windows versions from 2000 > 8: https://www.fosshub.com/InfraRecorder.html/ Similarly, the Burn app recommended for burning the .ISO on MacOS hasn't had a new version released since 2011, and I could fine no sign of the developer moving it to another forge: (https://sourceforge.net/projects/burn-osx/files/) Since the goal is to help a user transition to a fully free OS from an OS they're already running, why not simply give instructions for using the default disc burning software in that OS (per version if they differ)? Or if there isn't one, the most common disc burning freeware for that OS? That way the instructions are more likely to stay up-to-date, regardless of the fortunes of free code Windows/ Mac apps. Making Bootable USB The Windows instructions for making a bootable USB recommend the Universal USB Installer from PenDriveLinux. According to the homepage for that program, it now requires Vista or higher to work: "Windows Vista/7/8/10 or WINE to create the USB (Win 98/XP/2K WILL NOT Work!)" http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/#button The devices running these older version are more likely to have a CD-ROM drive, and also more likely not to have a BIOS that allows booting from USB. It might be good to include a note under the 'Boot Media' section of the Installation Guide page, advising people running these older versions of Windows that the USB method may not work, and recommending they install by burning a CD.
