Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Folding for COVID using Trisquel
Caleb, thanks for pointing that out: https://foldingathome.org/faqs/project-details/dont-post-source-code/ "Most of the critical parts of FAH are publicly available. The Tinker and Gromacs source codes can be downloaded and run. Unlike many computer projects, the paramount concern is not functionality, but the scientific integrity, and posting the source code in a way that would allow people to reverse engineer the code to produce bogus scientific results would make the whole project pointless. However, we stress that the vast majority of our code is already open source. We have an Open Source FAQ with more details." So even if the software was GPLv3, he still wouldn't want people looking at the code and potentially improving it. Interesting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Using Folding for COVID using Trisquel
Oops, I had a mind lapse for a second there regarding the versioning. They should hurry up as Ubuntu 20.04 comes out next month! As for the CPU, I built a new dev machine with a Ryzen 3700X back in July.

[Trisquel-users] Nano Express team confused about the GPL license?
Nano Express at https://nanoexpress.js.org/license is a Node based framework that has a simple version (Apache 2.0) and a Pro version under the GPL v3. They state this in their reasoning for the "pro" version: "If you application source was closed, you can get access via becoming Sponsor Middle patron or higher, else may be License violating to your application. I see clones and downloads statistics via npm and github" Is it me or do they not know what a GPL license is? If you are using a framework to write your code, it doesn't make the entire code GPL right? On top of that, this is GPL and not AGPL meaning that even if this is a "violation" it doesn't mean you have to share the code since that is what the AGPL is supposed to do. Even if this was AGPL, wouldn't it fall under the same guidelines that this is just a framework co-existing with your code?

How about you spend less time attacking people personally and more getting a free software OS out the door?
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel needs to be rebooted and based on Ubuntu 18.04
Trisquel 8 isn't fully out and its based on the soon to be 2 year old Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. At this point, it may be wise for the Trisquel team to start fresh with concentrating on the newer Ubuntu 18.04 code when it releases in April 2018. I hate to have seen this project die out and these forums not be about releasing anything in the past few years. Has Reuben given up? Does he care? If not, we shouldn't be held hostage by his lack of care. If there are people who still care about Trisquel, do something. Anything.

> How is their income relevant? They are a "non-profit" that accepts money for the corporation. If you read the link or watched the YouTube video, Mozilla has the power to remotely force extensions and that resulted in the Mr. Robot controversy. > Again, what references back up an alleged forced DRM? And if you're talking about a Mozilla-hosted discussion forum censoring people, how is that an issue which would give one cause to stop using their free software? Mozilla implemented the encrypted media extensions before it was a W3C standard. They also fired an employee for not agreeing with them 100% and they also own the RiseUp email site. RiseUp is very inclusive and will kick you out if you do not follow their strict ideology. > Such as? The Chromium browser has been excluded from Trisquel for years due to inconsistent licensing and Ruben made a decision to exclude it instead of doing further research or blacklisting the libraries.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I met RMS yesterday. We talked about Trisquel 8, this is what he said...
With Ubuntu 18.04 LTS coming out in April, should focus go towards "Trisquel 9" instead? I know there are a lot of users on Trisquel 7 and upgrading will be hard, but maybe its good to have a fresh start? Gnome and KDE are mature of course. MATE, XFCE, and even Budgie will be good to go as well. I'd love it if the Trisquel team paid attention to the Ubuntu 18.04 alphas/betas and used it as a codebase to prep for a swift launch of "Trisquel 9" soon after Ubuntu 18.04.

https://www.theverge.com/2017/12/16/16784628/mozilla-mr-robot-arg-plugin-firefox-looking-glass https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMALm1VthGY In a nutshell, the Mozilla Corporation, which brings in $500 million a year and is the steward behind the Mozilla Firefox browser, has been in a lot of hot water lately. Hot water for recently adding tracking information to their browser from forcing extensions to alter your ads to tailor to whatever company pays them to show. They talk about an "open internet" but are willing to force DRM in the browser and censor you if you do not agree with them. I know the other alternative is Chromium, but there still seems to be a bunch of issues around that browser too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
It would be nice to have a stable and polished ISO instead of having to rely on "daily" ISO builds or netinstall to install this OS in its alpha state. Btw, if you want to know how much time has passed, Ubuntu 17.10 will be released tomorrow, October 19th.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
There is nothing wrong with an LTS release like Ubuntu 16.04 as there are point release ISOs that bring in newer kernel and xservee installed by default. Oh and there's Snap packages.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
Hey Magic, If you look at the dates of some of the posts, I do have a reason to be worried. That first link was dated "Sun, 10/02/2016 - 13:10" How am I wrong to STILL be worried after this is still in Alpha?
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8... where are you?
I was looking at the Purism laptops today and they come with PureOS as the operating system. It would have been nice to have Trisquel as an option, but version 8 is STILL nowhere to be found. Anyone remember when Ruben would release Trisquel at a decent rate? The most recent version (7) is based off of an OS from April of 2014!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 post install. ??? and new to free-software ???
"Trisquel 8 is still alpha" When this OS is based off of code from April 2016 and is still an early work in progress in August 2017, it is an abandoned project at this point.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Flatpak on Trisquel 7
Its too bad this isn't a Snap either as Ubuntu 14.04/Trisquel 7 supports it via snapd.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Reminder: Current version of Trisquel has software that is over 3 years old
Stable = old
Re: [Trisquel-users] Reminder: Current version of Trisquel has software that is over 3 years old
I did make a post about using Snaps to keep some packages up to date: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-7-should-utilize-snap-packages-and-libre-host-them There are various ways Trisquel could run its own Snap store like this: https://github.com/noise/snapstore
[Trisquel-users] Reminder: Current version of Trisquel has software that is over 3 years old
Current version of Trisquel is 7, based off of Ubuntu 14.04 from April 2014. Trisquel 8 is still in alpha stages and is based off of software already a year old. Where is Trisquel 8 in final form? It is a big black eye in the perception of free software. Can we just release the fucking thing already? Christ.
[Trisquel-users] Trisquel 7+ should utilize Snap packages and a libre host for them
Even through the unreleased Trisquel 8 has the tool to create Snap packages via Snapcraft, Trisquel 7 and 8 have the snapd package to run Snaps. Since there isn't going to be a community repository and PPAs can be sketchy, why not have Trisquel run its own Snap portal and modify the Snap related software to reference it if necessary? The uncertainty of Trisquel 8 worries me and Snap packages may be the best option to get up to date and isolated software. I know that in Ubuntu, its an easy way to get up to date Atom, LibreOffice, and VLC.
[Trisquel-users] Gzdoom is now fully GPLv3 compliant
https://gzdoom.drdteam.org/index.php or http://www.playdeb.net/game/GZdoom for Trisquel 8 GZDoom 3.0.0 has been released. This is the first version that merges all software rendering features from QZDoom. In addition this is the first release under the GPL v3. To comply with the GPL, FModEx had to be removed as a sound backend, so this version will only support OpenAL. New features aside from merging with QZDoom include: * scriptable status bars. * scriptable level status screens. * static constant arrays in classes. * support for Doom64-style lighting in the software renderer, with the exception of gradients. * optimization of the scripting VM by removing some always active debug support. Please note that starting with this version the 32 bit Windows version will require support for SSE2, because the true color software renderer cannot work without it. As a result it can no longer be used on Pentium 3's and older.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot no longer opposes the Trisquel project
Hopefully this encourages Ruben to finally release Trisquel 8 as its not getting any love these days. Teetering on being a dead and abandoned project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Waiting for Trisquel 8 (Flidas)
At this point, Trisquel needs to be forked or shut down if Ruben cannot commit to the project or assign someone else to take over. Kinda pathetic at this point that Trisquel 8 has taken this long and a lot of respect for this project has been lost.

Even though there are non-free elements of the OS, Solus has been a pretty good example of doing a lot with a small team. I just wish Trisquel had the manpower and commitment of the Solus team.

Almost March 2017 when Ubuntu 16.04 came out in April 2016. Pick up the fucking pace guys.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Brisk-Menu on Trisquel 8 ?
No, because MATE in 16.04 (Trisquel 8) is GTK2 and Brisk Menu is GTK3 only. May have to wait until Trisquel 9.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 iso images updated
With the way the distro scene is going, I'm suprised no one has tried to make a libre version of SolusOS.
Re: [Trisquel-users] pip installer
You can always fork the repo at https://github.com/pypa/pip and then once you make your updates, do a merge request. Were you thinking of adding a -free command line option to pip to force free packages only?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Just a friendly reminder that Trisquel 7.0 is not outdated
I've brought up Snap packages, but no one has given an answer whether they are good or bad since they come from Canonical's servers. The Trisquel team could modify the source of the Snap installer to use approved packages on their own servers, but that's asking too much. Especially when Ruben can barely get security patches into the existing Trisquel release. Snaps could be better than PPAs but their status in Trisquel is uncertain.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Just a friendly reminder that Trisquel 7.0 is not outdated
"Sadly a few users seem to have forgotten this, and have decided to stop using Trisquel because they seem to care more about how new and shiny the software is, more than the ethics on the software." Besides the optional non-free repository, stock Debian is free software and both the testing and unstable repositories are up to date without sacrificing freedom. Its just that Trisquel is based off of the LTS releases of Ubuntu and the Trisquel releases often come out a year or more after the LTS they are based on.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Development of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas" Software proposal by category : System Tools
We all know its a fork, so there is no need to have Caja and Nautilus installed when only Caja is needed for desktop rendering and file management. It is the default file manager for MATE and the Ubuntu MATE distro after all. If you haven't been aware of the Nautilus project the past few years, people actually like Caja and Nemo better as newer Nautilus releases have removed features. Caja and Nemo have retained the previous features and added some of their own. You can even install the newest Nemo (v3) from http://www.webupd8.org/2016/11/nemo-320-with-unity-patches-and-without.html for Ubuntu 16.04/Trisquel 8. I can see a point in using this if you are using Nautilus on Ubuntu, but MATE's Caja is more than enough.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas" Software proposal by category : Internet
I'm kinda confused. It says the Ubuntu "license check" but Chromium has been in Ubuntu for a long time now. Plus, many of these posts are from 2009 and it is almost 2017. Its a shame that there are still issues (or they say there are) and there are less alternatives for Trisquel.

Is Chromium in a better place from a libre perspective than it was years ago?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas" Software proposal by category : System Tools
Nautilus is trash. MATE uses Caja by default and Trisquel 8 should stick to that.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas" Software proposal by category : Multimedia
Upstream Ubuntu ditched Brasero as no one really burns CDs, is not that active, and is clutter on the ISO
Re: [Trisquel-users] Development of Trisquel 8.0 "Flidas" Software proposal by category : Multimedia
What is Trisquel's policy on Snap packages? Are they allowed? I say cuz the latest VLC is available as one and I'm not sure if there are theming issues. Its one way to have the latest without a PPA.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 use hwe-16.04 and hwe-16.04-edge kernels?
Yeah, hopefully Ruben and the other team members consider this when this is rolled out. Its still great that you offer the Libre kernel. :-)
[Trisquel-users] Will Trisquel 8 use hwe-16.04 and hwe-16.04-edge kernels?
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/RollingLTSEnablementStack In January of 2017, Ubuntu 16.04.2 will adapt a new way to deliver the latest kernels in two forms. One that will always deliver the kernel of the most recent release (hwe-16.04) and one that is more of a "bleeding edge" one that is hwe-16.04-edge. Do you think that Trisquel will deblob this new kernel as well? I think it would be nice to have as many of us like to have more recent kernels from the repos. If you don't want to read the link, here is the gist: Description This represents the path where HWE Stack users on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS will automatically upgrade to newer HWE Stacks until reaching the final 18.04 HWE Stack in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Users will then remain on this final 18.04 HWE Stack for the remaining supported life of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. If the user fully upgrades to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, they will remain on the GA Kernel delivered in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and will not continue rolling forward on HWE Stacks delivered for 18.04. This is the path that users will be put on if choosing to install the HWE Stack from the 16.04.2 or newer LTS point release. Packages The suggested exact meta packages names are: linux-generic-hwe-16.04 linux-lowlatency-hwe-16.04 These meta packages will resolve to the appropriate linux-image--hwe-16.04 and linux-headers--hwe-16.04. See example diagram below. In the event we need to provide extended support for customers for a specific HWE kernel, we can roll out a linux--lts- indirect meta package into a private PPA. Update Schedule We will roll to the newest HWE Stack offering around the time of the point release introducing that HWE Stack. This is approximately 3mo after the original series is released. As an example, the 16.04.2 point release should take place in January 2017. At this time the linux-headers-generic-hwe-16.04 and linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 would point to the new v4.8 based kernel. hwe-16.04-edge Description This represents the path that provides users early access to the upcoming HWE Stack that is to be released next for the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. The aim is to provide this early preview in order to allow users to test the upcoming HWE Stack prior to the automatic upgrade taking place. This should help ensure a smooth upgrade and transition. Once hwe-16.04-edge aligns with the hwe-16.04 target, users on the hwe-16.04-edge path will transition back to the more conservative hwe-16.04 path and continue being upgraded until reaching the final 18.04 HWE Stack in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Users will then remain on the final 18.04 HWE Stack for the remaining supported life of the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. If the user fully upgrades to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS, they will remain on the GA Kernel delivered in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and will not continue rolling forward on HWE Stacks delivered for 18.04. Packages The suggested exact meta packages names are: linux-generic-hwe-16.04-edge linux-lowlatency-hwe-16.04-edge As with the hwe-16.04 path, these -edge meta packages would resolve to linux-image--hwe-16.04-edge and linux-headers--hwe-16.04-edge Update Schedule As mentioned, the kernel version provided by the hwe-16.04-edge path will provide early access to the newer kernel version up to ~6mo prior to the hwe-16.04 path receiving the same. We will introduce the newer edge kernel at the beginning of each point release. For example, 16.04.1 released in July, 2016. At that time, hwe-16.04-edge would point to the Yakkety kernel currently undergoing development for the 16.10 release. This will allow for a maximum ~6mo baking period before being officially delivered and supported in the 16.04.2 time frame. Once both hwe-16.04-edge and hwe-16.04 both point to the final Yakkety HWE kernel version, hwe-16.04-edge users users will be transitioned to track the more conservative hwe-16.04ore of a test bed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 8 alpha iso has been released!
MATE was the best choice at this point. With Trisquel 9, the team should also take a look at Budgie as the Budgie version will be official with 17.04 onwards.
Re: [Trisquel-users] How about we send a mail to the fsf, Trisquel could use some help.
People bashed me in the past for this, but the lack of communication from Ruben and the lack of any progress has many worried about this distro. People shouldn't have to hound him on IRC to get an update. He needs to follow through. Posts like these just reinforce the faith that is being lost towards this distro.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel boycott by Libreboot
To be honest, it would be nice to have a statement from Ruben to clarify what is going on and to get his take on the whole thing. What did he do? Did he harass this employee or not? This is going to keep happening until Ruben brings some closure to the matter. He thinks that staying quiet is the best route, but his silence isn't helping his case in one bit.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot Developer Leah Rowe Attack gnu and rms Again
That's a given with the harassment claims against Ruben and Trisquel being his side project.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trouble getting nouveau to load instead of vesa for my nvidia 970
Why would you downgrade a GTX 970 for a much weaker GeForce 8400GS? You are sacrificing performance just for the sake of being libre. When you buy a card like the 970, your intentions are to play games and those games run better with the non-free drivers.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel ISOs? When???
The reality of this project is that people are always waiting and there is no clear communication or roadmap. They are always waiting because some use this OS as the backbone of their everyday use at home and/or at work. It is very important to them. Some want the latest and greatest and some are just content with old software that is years old. Its nice that the older version of Trisquel is still supported due to the LTS model, but its nice to have something newer. Having Trisquel 8 based off of Ubuntu 16.04 means that the OS is 6 months old software wise, but it is a good start. The packages in it are still very relevant and can be updated with PPAs. I do admit that this forum provides relevant conversation of free software besides Trisquel and that is great. There just needs to be some progress in getting Trisquel 8 out.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel ISOs? When???
I'm just so burned out. Waiting and waiting and nothing happens. No news. Nothing.
Re: [Trisquel-users] New Trisquel ISOs? When???
This also means that Trisquel 8 has been cancelled. Probably have to stick with those Trisquel 7 ISOs from 2014 if you still want to stick around with this project. Trisquel really loses its appeal when you can do about the same with Debian (don't enable non-free) or go with Parabola if you are familiar with Arch. Ubuntu is already going to release their next version (16.10) meaning that the Trisquel team needs to pick up the pace. Ya ya the "you can contribute" canned responses are pretty much how things are. But how can you contribute when the main project leader just disappears and breaks his promises of Freedom Fridays. Just admit it guys. Trisquel is done.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
Since Ruben has been silent, how did he "side" with this person against Leah? Did he calmly discuss it or did he laugh at Leah or name call?
Re: [Trisquel-users] GNU won't let Libreboot leave. Ruben mentioned again in statement for his involvement.
Ruben needs to make a public statement about this. Why does he keep getting mentioned? Is he guilty? Is he innocent? His silence is actually frighting when considering that he has put Trisquel 8 on hold and isn't doing the Freedom Fridays anymore.
[Trisquel-users] GNU won't let Libreboot leave. Ruben mentioned again in statement for his involvement.
https://libreboot.org/gnu-insult/ Things have really started to heat up since GNU won't give Libreboot to Leah. Ruben is still being mentioned in the discrimination claims.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What happened to Freedom Fridays?
Ruben has more on his plate now with a potential work discrimination investigation and may not have the time for this pet project. He may have the time to maintain Trisquel 7, but I'm getting the feeling Trisquel 8 is on hold for the time being.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
Are you insinuating that she has a mental illness due to her transgender status?
[Trisquel-users] If Rubén harassed Libreboot's Leah Rowe, he should be fired and Trisquel shut down
If Rubén is breaking any workplaces discriminatory laws, he should be gone and all funding should be pulled from Trisquel. In return, to send a message, the Trisquel project should be shut down as well. This could be a good thing as it will encourage another free software alternative to Ubuntu and get some fresh blood in the FLOSS scene. Rubén has broken promises and taken way too long to release Trisquel 8 and at this point, it may not happen. Especially if he is taken to court for harassing a transgender employee.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
Its interesting that Rubén is mentioned in this post. I'm guessing since Rubén has a Hispanic background, there may be some religious upbringing on his behalf that may have fueled some discriminatory comments towards Leah. If Rubén gets axed, does that mean that Trisquel gets dissolved as well?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
Just saw this from http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=FSF-RMS-Statements-Libreboot: "Update: Leah Rowe has contacted me to say that there's now this Libreboot.org page with their side: Leah is now calling not just for the resignation/firing of the executive director but also the two employees allegedly involved in this incident. She is also calling for a boycott on the FSF and more projects to leave the GNU. She is also seeking that the Free Software Foundation refund $6120 USD she has reportedly donated to them since last year."
Re: [Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
This can be one of two things: 1. Fired for performance and then this person stirs up the pot by saying it was gender related hoping there is a lawsuit. This is very common in corporate America when a black employee is fired. I forgot what its called, so check your PHR/SPHR/SHIRM guides. 2. Fired for being LGBTQ. If so, the FSF should get its non profit status revoked and the organization shut down. The GPL will still exist, but the FSF will be removed from any FLOSS association and history entirely.
[Trisquel-users] Libreboot leaves FSF. Says FSF shouldn't exist anymore.
https://phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item=Libreboot-Not-GNU "I'm declaring here and now to the whole world that Libreboot is no longer part of the GNU project. I do not believe that the FSF or the GNU project deserve to exist." Ouch.

Yeah, I've heard about the C201 and since it is ARM, it may not be good for Trisquel but Debian should work: https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Asus/C201 Its too bad the wireless is non-free.

Thunderbird is getting updated (now on v45) but there are no major changes with each release. As others have said, the industry has moved towards web based email or email via the programs on your Android or iPhone. That's also if you are using email at all since most consumers stick to texting, Facebook messenger, and Snapchat. Instill use Thunderbird for work related emails and it has matured to the point where it is stable and does what I need it to. Heck, I don't use any extensions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] phpmyadmin installation problem
Have you tried alternatives like Adminer from http://adminer.org ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
I actually posted that prior to reading his response that was kinda lost in the replies. It as in response to your original post. Not that it matters since every time I post, there's always someone there to downvote it and make hidden.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
So basically the FSF would rather spend its resources in being political than give a helping hand to a distribution that follows their ideals. Shouldn't the deployment and continued growth of free software that you can run freely on your server carry some weight? Especially in modern times with "cloud" servers that only deploy operating systems like Ubuntu with their restricted and multiverse repos enabled by default. I'd love to see Trisquel in a Docker image (Docker is free software) or as an option on something like Digital Ocean or Rackspace.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
I can get by in the Tor browser in Ubuntu 16.04 (which doesn't use the Cisco OpenH264) by installing the ffmpeg or libav package. I think it was the same on that Totem had me install when playing an .mp4 file for the first time that used the H.264 video codec.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I'm leaving Trisquel
I have to agree with the original poster. This distribution peaked around 2010/2011 and hasn't been the same since. It looks worse than before (which can be fixed with MATE if they still want a classic look) and communication between Ruben and the community is at an all time low. He works for the FSF, yet cannot find time for his FSF endorsed distro. The attitude he has of keeping us all waiting for a release needs to stop. Especially when he doesn't release any updated ISOs during the lifetime of a major release. They get horribly outdated to the point where some people cannot even install due to fixes made upstream by the Ubuntu point release ISOs being ignored by Trisquel. Besides the curation of a few packages, what is he real difference between Ubuntu and Trisquel if someone only enables the main and universe repos, uses the Linux Libre kernel, and purges the linux-firmware package? There has been some questionable removals of free software from Trisquel like Chromium and the ZFS packages that are removed on fanboys and misinformation. I don't blame you if you want to leave.
Re: [Trisquel-users] I am interested in making a libre debian fork short term support,
Why not spend those resources in helping out the Trisquel team instead of forking something? It's a daunting task for a one man team and the odds are against you. You probably will give up, lose interest, or it takes longer than expected and gets released way past your deadlines. If released and if it's usable, where is your user base going to come from?
Re: [Trisquel-users] hey, how would I go about updating to the latest version of, python?
Oops meant to say Python 3 and not just Python
Re: [Trisquel-users] hey, how would I go about updating to the latest version of, python?
http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book Great resource, but very Python 2 centric. He goes out of his way to tell you to not use Python. It's a shame considering this is a popular book too.
Re: [Trisquel-users] The future of Libre Computing: Crowd Funding Campaign Starts Now
I'd love to have more options on the graphics side than AMD and Nvidia. Their non-free drivers are the best performing and their "open source" offerings still require non-free firmware and perform much worse than their non-free drivers. I am a big gamer and I will admit that I dual boot with Windows but only use it for games. When not gaming, I use GNU/Linux for programming, media consumption, and general Internet use. I have tried games on a GNU/Linux box but I am conflicted since the games are still non-free even if they come DRM free from GOG. People enjoy the freedom of not requiring a Windows license, but if a GNU/Linux user plays games via Steam, it's no different than playing the games on Windows. I just wish more developers embrace Vulkan going forward instead of using DirectX 11/12. If more devs use Vulkan and that results in better free drivers for AMD and Nvidia or another that respects freedom, then the situation becomes better. I just don't expect publishers like Activision, Bethesda, or EA to ever change.
Re: [Trisquel-users] hey, how would I go about updating to the latest version of, python?
There's the "Dead Snakes" PPA available here where you can get newer Python 3 versions: https://launchpad.net/~fkrull/+archive/ubuntu/deadsnakes?field.series_filter=trusty
Re: [Trisquel-users] Brave browser
I think like 2-3 years ago, someone combed through the Chromium source code and he gave up. It would be curious to see what the status is of the licenses inside the code and if the browser can be rebuilt without the questionable bits. I think Chromium is a great browser, but people around here don't seem to trust it. Hopefully Mozilla's upcoming Servo based browser closes the gap with Chrome/Chromium. There are test builds for GNU/Linux at https://download.servo.org
Re: [Trisquel-users] Dual boot Windows 7 wants username
Are you one of the few who downvoted my post? I swear I cannot downvote anyone yet everyone else has the power.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Dual boot Windows 7 wants username
People have asked for updated Trisquel 7 ISOs to be more in line with the Ubuntu 14.04.x ones that fix issues and such. It never happened. People want a timely Trisquel 8 release since T7 is showing its age and since we never get an updated T7 ISO, users who do a fresh install are held back by a release that came out over 2 years ago. But it's ok to rant in other threads in how Trisquel 7 is just "good enough" and then come back and say that the older packages and ISOs are becoming a problem as time goes on. You need to realize that communication between Ruben and the rest of us has been terrible for a while now. Heck, the guy even works for the FSF full time now to concentrate on Trisquel. We are kept in the dark for the longest time and it's debatable if he even takes feedback into consideration. I'm surprised that Trisquel hasn't been forked into something else at this point considering the communication issues stated above. Either people will take the disapointment or lack the interest to actually care.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Should snapd and snapcraft be added to xenial purge?
Is the Trisquel team willing to run their own Snap repository and change the source code in snapd and snapcraft to link to it? If not, still pulling in the Snap management packages could open up the door to non-free software and letting Canonical dictate everything.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 16.04 released 2 months ago. Trisquel 8 status?
I look forward to a new release because I can take something with an established look like ElementaryOS and run the Ubuntu Trisquel conversion script. Heck, isn't that also the best way to get Unity running in Trisquel? Install standard Ubuntu and then run the conversion script. FYI, the latest ElementaryOS beta based off of 16.04 is out: http://blog.elementary.io/post/145881464631/loki-beta
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 16.04 released 2 months ago. Trisquel 8 status?
So you are the authority now? Did my playful posts laced with sexual innuendo make you feel uncomfortable? That's a shame. I thought you had more balls and wouldn't hide behind a down voting system. You claim to be this computer expert. What is it that you actually do?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Ubuntu 16.04 released 2 months ago. Trisquel 8 status?
If ZFS is not included as a kernel module when the ISO ships and/or during a kernel upgrade, and simply sits in the repository as a standalone package, then what's the harm? There are other free software packages out there incompatible with the GPL, but thy can be installed manually if needed.

You are right. I'm a youngin and only get to post when my babysitter is around and mommy is at work. The babysitter has a semi cute, girl next door look to her. Most of the time when I post, I'm knuckle deep inside her and alternate between flexing and typing to you.

It's my favorite place to finish after pumping away at the wookie cookie. You?
