Re: [Trisquel-users] Minimal Installation
You used Fedora 28, which comes with Gnome Shell (not considering the spins, akin to Trisquel mini)? That's far from minimal or lightweight. Anyway, not many solutions : either learn how to make a minimal install (best solution, there must be a tutorial around the web), or maybe easier, install Trisquel mini and remove software from synaptic. There's probably a way to list only the removable software.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi disconnecting very often
lswh gives driver=ath9k_htc driverversion=4.14.67-gnu firmware=1.4, things like that. I changed the Wi-Fi channel on my ISP's modem. It seems pretty stable for now. No error messages, no disconnections I could witness. Hopefully it stays that way. I'll get back to you if it gets wobbly again. Thanks!
[Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi disconnecting very often
I tried Wicd instead of Network-manager, it's the same result. I reinstalled the ath9k driver (it's a dongle bought from technoethic which still works as far as I can tell). What else could I try ? Thank you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
ANSWER It was a bug. https://blog.sombex.com/2017/12/fix-cant-connect-to-wifi-issue-in-debian-9-and-other-debian-based-linux.html 1. Open this file: sudo gedit /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf 2. add these 2 lines and save: [device] wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no 3. Restart Network Manager with this line: sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager 4. Worst case, restart the machine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
It is indeed ath9K_htc. I reinstalled the whole OS, and now the proper Wi-Fi network is already listed. But after inputting the passphrase, I still can't access the network via Wi-Fi. I'll reinstall the linux-libre kernel now, and see how it goes. Btw, for your linux-libre tutorial: "gpg --with-fingerprint gpg.asc" was incomplete in my case. But "gpg --show-keys gpg.asc" did the trick (the fingerprint shows, although without spacing). And thank you for your repo :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
Nothing really : most of my data was on an encrypted HDD. The OS was on the SSD, along some configuration files and .org files (oh well...). So I picked an old HDD from an older machine which I was using as an external drive, erased it and made a new install. Ah, maybe this matters: this time only /boot is left unencrypted. But since I input the passphrase and can boot, I doubt it's a problem.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
Yes, personal, not pro.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
I checked them from another machine, all caps or not, etc. I also have the document from my ISP where they're printed/written.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
Sorry, I'll clarify : When I say I'm rebooting (by choice), it's only meaning that I tried this option, since it solves issues sometimes. When I say it's a working card, I mean it's recognized by lsusb, and it worked up until now (my SSD died, I had to reinstall on a new disk). My problem is that I can create the network interface in Mate (SSID and passphrase, checked both), but when I try to connect to it, it doesn't get connected.
[Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi : listed in lsusb, ath9K installed, jxself linux-libre installed
I have a working tehnoethic Wi-Fi dongle. It is listed in lsusb. ath9K driver is installed. jxself's linux-libre kernel is installed. I rebooted the machine several times. What else could I try please ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh install without erasing data of external drive
Thanks Magic Banana. Out of curiosity: 1. I've unplugged B (the important one) and kept A and C plugged (empty). 2. I've put C as ext4 and with a specific mount point. there's a file in it, to see if it's still there after the install. 3. I configured A as LVM, and made / and /swap as logical volumes. What scared me was the the message about formatting C. I selected only A for LVM anyway, but still. Anyway, I couldn't install GRUB for some reason (this machine is going to be the end of me...). Still, I finished the install without GRUB and started the live CD. And the drive is not encrypted anymore, plus the file disappeared... So for LVM, it seems to be much safer to unplug the drive with data, make the install and configure the mount point in fstab. Maybe the path was kept, since the drive is encrypted. Not sure if info about mount point is also kept on the drive.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh install without erasing data of external drive
Assuming you did manual partitioning, did you have to select the partition type ?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Fresh install without erasing data of external drive
I forgot one thing: I'm in the manual partitioning page, and the disk shoes as sdb, with tiny bits of space before and after. So I don't know if it counts as a partition.
[Trisquel-users] Fresh install without erasing data of external drive
I have drive A and drive B. I want a fresh install on A while setting up a mount point for B (already has user data, and is encrypted). Some background : B was initially empty and set up with LVM. Since the SSD with the OS gave up on me, I can decrypt it and access it with a live CD. My first attempt : I planned to partition A with LVM (/, /home, and so on) while setting up the mount point for B without erasing it. But it seems I have to select the type of partition first (ext4, physical volume for LVM, and so on. I feel like using "do not use partition"). I could also simply unplug the drives, make the install, and plug them again. But the problem remains: naming them and setting up the mount point. What's the simplest way to do so ? Is it better to set it up later in fstab ?
[Trisquel-users] Last resort : SSD partly detected
Hi, it's been a while. My machine didn't want to boot anymore. After a few tests, it's my SSD : it's not detected anymore. After some research, it seems it's dead. I tried the SSD on another machine, and although I can't detect it on gnome-disks or in sudo fdisk -l, it IS listed as /dev/sdb in lsblk! Btw it's encrypted, so I must chroot before I can mount it. So I tried to detect it in Gparted, but it's hanging. I tried to chroot/decrypt it, but it's also hanging: 1. sudo modprobe dm-crypt 2. sudo cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sdb* linux (also tried sdb1, sdb) And here's dmesg, before and after plugging the ssd: BEFORE SSD PLUGGED IN (although plugged in just before unplugging it) user:~$ dmesg | tail -n 20 [14333.415807] Result: hostbyte=DID_NO_CONNECT driverbyte=DRIVER_OK [14333.415810] sd 16:0:0:0: [sdb] CDB: [14333.415812] Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 02 00 [14333.415823] end_request: I/O error, dev sdb, sector 4 [14333.415826] Buffer I/O error on device sdb, logical block 2 [14333.415905] ldm_validate_partition_table(): Disk read failed. You're good... Gotta learn about those sweet paths. Thanks a lot man :)
Re: [Trisquel-users] asus kfsn4-dre for pc desktop?
I honestly don't even remember why. Believe me, it was painful to make this work. You'll save yourself a lot of time (and despair, and anger haha) reading from my mistakes. You can Ctrl+f to look for keywords instead of reading it all (which I concede looks like a daunting task, even for me). Plus that's all I have to offer, minus fetching the info myself from those notes, all for you (which would be ridiculous).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Share your most useful cli programs...
Hey SuperTramp, my pirate-get command wasn't found (yet installed). I checked on the gitub issues pages without success, so I wondered if you ever had this issue. peerflix is a beauty.
Re: [Trisquel-users] asus kfsn4-dre for pc desktop?
It's all in the "hack and hack unholy scriptures" up there. But quick answer: I bought a specific chassis (around 100€) because yes, it had to fit properly. But I remember someone suggesting to simply drill the missing holes in a standard chassis. It's not librebooted since I've had troubles with it on this board, but it's corebooted without blobs. Anyway, you'll find all the details in the links above.

Re: [Trisquel-users] asus kfsn4-dre for pc desktop?
Yes it is, but the setup is rather painful, as you will see if you read the whole thing: The CPUs are rather "old", so the best are around 60€ top (couldn't find them brand new though). Yes, mine runs with one CPU. I have some rare Xorg crashes I have to identify, but for the most part, I have enough room with one. By ATX, I guess it is. Better check the manual for this kind of info. About the PSU, I don't remember, better check my threads on this forum about that board. https://trisquel.info/en/forum/asus-kfsn-4-dre-end-november-2016 https://trisquel.info/en/forum/topic-locked-huh-follow-making-coreboot-work-full-disk-encryption-asus-kfsn4-dre https://trisquel.info/en/forum/asus-kfsn4-dre-no-wi-fi-nor-sound https://trisquel.info/en/forum/keyboard-mouse-not-responding-after-startx-home-swap-encrypted https://trisquel.info/en/forum/cant-open-encrypted-hdd I got an Nvidia GPU on it. I get DVI output. I didn't check power consumption, I don't know how yet. The mainboard in itself can't be noisy AFAIK, but the fans can definitely be. The workaround I found was (besides using a low noise CPU fan setup) to use hardware knobs that reduce the power fed to the fans, thus reducing noise (it's called a rheobus, and it should come with hardware probes that aren't too precise, but will do for temp monitoring). You're welcome ! It's roughly twice as powerful as an X2OO CPU-wise, and and the GPU is of course much better. The noise level with my setup makes it similar, even a bit lower maybe. And My X200 had periods when the heat was too much. So regardless of the time and sweat it took, I'm happy with it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Uh oh - ArchiveOS listed Trisquel
I found nothing about it anyway. I don't understand what you mean either. Emacs can be found on any OS ever. PPA isn't that safe for not so well known software. As for systemd (whatever that is), I see enough people adore it, and enough complain about it. Anyway, Emacs (with org-mode, evil-mode and tons of stuff) ROCKS!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Uh oh - ArchiveOS listed Trisquel
Woah, what ?? EmacsOS ?! I have to check this out, thanks for the info !!!
[Trisquel-users] My "free software" good deed of the day
I simply helped someone install spellchecking dictionaries on LibreOffice (actually OpenOffice, but still). It could be a bit more straightforward though, since I had to open the dictionary while the software is turned off, and I had to select the dictionary for the paragraph as well. But it worked eventually, and MS Office wasn't an option anymore. I'm not even vocal about free software, but I kinda enjoyed it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Purism working on libre phone
"Yeah, but it's kinda lucrative." -- Purism, probably.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Uh oh - ArchiveOS listed Trisquel
Same old thread, and I'm not even a real long time user... Fact? Trisquel will remain "outdated". just take it for what it is: an entry level and/or an "average" user's OS. It shouldn't be an issue as long as security updates are up (which was an issue with the browser at some point). Just accept it, work around it or try another distro. I mean you could just switch to another libre distro that's more up-to-date (or maybe use ppa, or even compile the programs, I don't know which is best actually. The PPA for known programs might be the easiest, and safe enough). I installed Trisquel on my parents computers, I personally use (currently) Debian Sid. I still don't find the same kind of information on other fora though. And I might just get back on Trisquel and compile (or rather ppa since I'm lazy for that kind of stuff) any program that's not cutting edge enough for my needs. I haven't decided yet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi device not recognised on my PC
Thanks a lot mason. Indeed, it was enough for my needs.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi device not recognised on my PC
This is the odd part: on Trisquel's working PC, I have: * open-ath9k-htc-firmware * firmware-atheros * firmware-carl9170 on another Trisquel that's not working with this Wi-Fi device, I have none of these installed. On the Debian ASUS non working, I have installed "firmware-linux-free", which seems to fit the description of "firmware-carl9170". I installed and did a reboot, which didn't change a thing. "open-ath9k-htc-firmware" is nowhere to be found on Debian. [Interestingly, "firmware-atheros" is listed as non-free for Debian on the web (from Wheezy to Sid). It's installed by default with Gnome3 on Trisquel, though I suppose only the name is the same] Ah: "open-ath9k-htc-firmware" is only available on Sid (and Buster). So I'll move to Sid and see how it goes. Many thanks Magic banana :)
[Trisquel-users] Wi-Fi device not recognised on my PC
The Wi-Fi device works with free software (tested on another machine). My PC is an ASUS KFSN4-DRE. It's listed within lsusb as as Atheros AR9271. But I have nothing in iwconfig nor in ifconfig -a. I also tried lspci, ip a... And I did a few reboots. seems my PC "failed to load ath9k_htc". I wanted to try a kernel update as well (jxself), but on this machine it doesn't display the key fingerprint so I didn't proceed. Also I tried from a LiveCD, same issue. Any ideas ?
[Trisquel-users] Re : jxself's repo: fingerprint displayed for one computer, not the other
Actually all " emails belong to jxelf since they're displayed on the X200 with the key print.
[Trisquel-users] jxself's repo: fingerprint displayed for one computer, not the other
jxself's repo: fingerprint displayed for one computer, not the other. One is an X200, the other (not properly displayed on this one) is KFSN4-DRE from Asus. Instead I get 3 uid with different emails belonging to jxself most likely. Any idea why?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
Even after blacklisting the default card (and a proper poweroff, then reboot), alsa still doesn't work by itself, but only through jack. I modified /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf as: blacklist snd_hda_intel I also tried from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture pcm.!default { type hw card USB } ctl.!default { type hw card USB } Finally fixed :D !!! Not sure the blacklisting is useful though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
One possibility is that the hdmi from the GPU (considered as the default soundcard) might block something.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
When jack is on, it is normal that alsa can't work. Jack works with configured programs. In theory, it means that alsa works through jack only (need to confirm). But when jack is off, alsa doesn't work. The simplest way is to just use jack, but alsa alone still seems broken, and I don't like it. I also did this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Jack#Playing_nice_with_ALSA
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
I pretty much did all the checks I could find, but I still have issues with alsa. I'll try to set up my external soundcard as the default one and hope for the best.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
Super odd: in Audacious, instead of default pcm in the parameters, I selected one of the lines named after my external soundcard and I got sound output. Now I restart qjackctl, and it doesn't fail. I don't understand. In alsamixer, I have no levels of volumes displayed, and I can't mute any channel. Next, I close Audacious, open it again and it fails. I suppose I need to configure default_pcm.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/TP-LINK_TL-WN722N I bought the wrong version. Version 2 isn't using Atheros.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
Nevermind, the interfaces are not in /etc/network/interfaces. Minimal install is a bit too minimal sometimes. As for the sound, no idea.
[Trisquel-users] Asus KFSN4-DRE: no Wi-Fi nor sound
I know it's a server board, but I don't understand why my external Wi-Fi key isn't recognised with Wicd or sudo ifconfig (supposedly supported, a TP-LINK WN722N, Atheros version). Ethernet works, but I don't see it in sudo ifconfig either?? As for the sound, in qjackctl I have a "system" device listed on a working PC, but here there's nothing. My external USB soundcard is listed in alsamixer though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Monitoring desktop temperature with Trisquel
For anyone with the same issue, forgetit if you have a specific AMD CPU. Check archwiki's lm-sensor page for the k10temp tweak, which didn't work for me. Even if it would have worked, it would be inaccurate. So I'll get a rhebus with a probe on the CPU indicating the proper temp. Bonus, I'll be able to manually control all the fans. Case closed for me.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Monitoring desktop temperature with Trisquel
Necroing a bit, as I want to monitor my CPU temp and fan speeds, and control all that: * I have 2 case fans, 2 CPU fans, and a GPU connected directly on the motherboard (+adapters on CPU fans for lower RPM/noise) * I installed lm-sensors * I configured it (defaults, and accepted the config to be written on file, then rebooted) * I also installed xsensors (though I'll delete it later), and I have: + one tab named nouveau, called PCI/GPU in sensors on the CLI: around 66 RPM, 1 temp (there's 2 fans, though it's most likely 1 plug). + one tab named called isa adapter in sensors on the CLI (a bunch of alphanumeric chars in xsensors) wchich has 3 temps at -48°C, and 0 RPM. Questions: 1. Which is which? I can identify the GPU, but I get only 3 fans for 2 case fans and 2 CPU fans. 2. the RPM numbers seem wrong (0 as all of them are running, and 66 seems huge). So the first goal is to just get proper temp/rpm monitoring monitoring. Once I have visibility, I want to install fancontrol, if I have to.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
The "plain" option did the trick. Another possibility is that it was an incomplete entry in crypttab (while the other HDD wasn't configured... ), but I don't feel like checking at this point. So it was complicated, as usual, but it's solved at last.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Maybe I can try this: https://sgros.blogspot.nl/2013/12/systemd-waiting-for-external-crypted.html
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Here's the journalctl -xb log: https://pastebin.com/bBJt2zEj Some lines are supposed to be in black (don't seem like errors), some are in red. I remember one about the CPU thermal probe not working or something. But what interest us is the repeating lines in the end, about cryptsetup, or anything crypt really. A quick search should get you there. And the one for Xorg, since I noticed some errors during the boot process: https://pastebin.com/UNFWTNxS
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
* I still can't access my drives without decrypting them and mounting them. * one of the drives isn't even encrypted yet, and I can't mount it in nautilus. All i did was to format it with one ext4 partition. * I can see both drives though because I labeled them from /media in Gparted. But they're invisible in pkexec nautilus (it kinda works after sudo -i).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Thank you, now I'm in. Well, I couldn't mount /usr ("write-protected", then "does not exist"). But I can access fstab anyway. I don't know what to change though. I 'll comment the new lines out for now, and see how it goes.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
I don't know how to chroot. Following this guide(https://stephentanner.com/restoring-grub-for-an-encrypted-lvm.html), vgscan is nowhere to be found on the LiveCD. Also, I'm not even sure I'm unlocking the proper path.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
After encrypting the HDD and enabling the keyfile, I can't access the console anymore. After booting and unlocking the main drive (SSD), it tries to unlock the newly encrypted HDD with the keyfile, and... I'm into emergency mode, and it says the root account is locked. Of course it's locked, I didn't even have the time to input my username and passphrase. I guess it's better than the cyclone eye... Chances are it's the modifications if fstab that did it (from the little I could gather). I'll try chrooting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
After yet another install, I configured the drives to be mounted on /media/folder1 and /media/folder2. I was rewarded with systemd's cyclone eye. Great. So Since I'm getting tired of all these bugs (not strictly Trisquel related), I'll just encrypt them after the install with this https://davidyat.es/2015/04/03/encrypting-a-second-hard-drive-on-ubuntu-14-10-post-install/ Hopefully this will work.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Additional info: --no-install-recommends might be the culprit. It seems it is to be used sparingly, not all the time. I'd have to reinstall to be sure thoughn because even removing myself from the input group works just fine now.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Nautilus sees and unlocks an encrypted external HDD amazingly well. I'll try encryption again on the internal HDD and see how it goes. If it works, I most likely did something wrong during the install. Here's a possible reason why Nautilus doesn't see the internal HDD: The path I told it to be mounted on wasn't on /media but on /home. https://askubuntu.com/questions/207288/nautilus-does-not-display-drives-properly
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
OK, after the failed attempts above to unlock the drive as non-root: * burn that computer * uh, maybe try something else first. Like reformatting the drive with Gparted.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
I didn't succeed in opening gnome-disks as root. G_IS_DBUS_CONNECTION failed G_IS_DBUS_PROXY failed Just a quick recap about this hacked install: * encrypted internal HDD not recognized as root (same with different file managers). * I can input the passphrase as the normal user, but opening is "not authorized". * pkexec doesn't work (and when it works on a working machine, the command is too complex/long) polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to Policykit daemon: GDBus-Error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: no session for cookie AUTHENTICATION FAILED === Error executing command as another user: Not authorized * I tried system updates * Trying Parabola is a good last resort
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
It's complicated, it's an internal HDD, and the working machine is a laptop. It might work with gnome-disks as sudo or gksudo, I didn't try yet.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
No worries, the HDD is encrypted but empty for now. Thanks though, this might work just fine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Even PCmanFM as root doesn't display my drives (displayed as non-root). It's kind of reassuring for Nautilus with gksudo (besides the odd looks). Less regarding pkexec, but oh well. It's less reassuring regarding unlocking my drives. Well, I can reformat them with Gparted if I have to. I'll try gnome-disks first.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
I'm tempted. What about constant fixes and all that? Is it really troublesome, or only something to check before updating?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
I find in fstab the 3 logical volumes /root /home and /swap, and /boot. The 2 other HDD which I can see in Nautilus (but can't in sudo nautilus) are not there. Anyway, I'm off the computer for a few days, but please keep the ideas coming. Even better: isn't there a file manager that just works? Thunar and PCmanFM don't automount thumbdrives easily, and definitely can't turn off/spin down an eternal HDD. And Nautilus is buggy as root. This tip looks interesting in addition to PCmanFM or Thunar (from https://askubuntu.com/questions/633027/eject-usb-drive-action-for-pcmanfm): In lxpanel right-click and select 'Add / Remove Panel Items'. Add a new 'Application Launch Bar' and position it before (or somewhere around) 'Digital Clock' that should be already there. In the newly added 'Application Launch Bar' add as application the 'Preferences / Disks'. This is the gnome-disks application that comes with Lubuntu. If you need to do something with your disks, then just click the Disks icon in the panel. You select the disk and Power Off from the top menu. This is same as handy as 'Safely remove hardware' in Windows OS, and the above positions it more or less in same place as the Windows has it in desktop. Automounting drive has to work though.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Right, I forgot. Unfortunately, no luck with gksudo anyway. As for pkexec, I want to try again: * On another machine with gnome shell, the command "pkexec env DISPLAY=$DISPLAY XAUTHORITY=$XAUTHORITY" is the only one that worked. * it's odd as no files related to nautilus in the /usr/share/policykit1/actions, whereas installing nautilus-admin installed it on the non-working machine.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
OK, gksudo gave me the exact same result as sudo: * odd display * no access to the locked drive I still have pkexec to fix hopefully (since it's the recommended way), and through the command line (most likely like this: https://askubuntu.com/questions/63594/mount-encrypted-volumes-from-command-line).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
But isn't gksudo deprecated? But I can install it and try, no problem. I've never opened this one yet, but I do open external encrypted HDD on my other PC but with gnome-disks, and with sudo.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Oh right, I forgot this option ^^" Let me figure out how and I'll try.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
I donwloaded a policykit agent, and modified the path in .xinitrc to launch it on startup and rebooted. Now I have (authenticating as the normal user and inputting the sudo passphrase when asked for): polkit-agent-helper-1: error response to Policykit daemon: GDBus-Error: org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: no session for cookie AUTHENTICATION FAILED === Error executing command as another user: Not authorized
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
pkexec nautilus (after installing nautilus-admin and restarting) gives me: Error executing command as another user: not authorized.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
additional info: sudo nautilus looks weird (not only the GTK), the disk isn't displayed.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
Thanks a lot albertoefg. I'll try from the CLI since sudo Nautilus doesn't look right (even if I installed nautilus-admin).
[Trisquel-users] Can't open encrypted HDD
This internal HDD is displayed in Nautilus, and I am prompted to input the passphrase. But it doesn't work. It was encrypted during the install. On another machine, I had to open gnome-disks as sudo, then I could open the HDD. Isn't it better (and possible) to just unlock from the normal user?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Well, regarding mouse and keyboard(s) being accessible from startx without sudo, it definitely works :) If I have other bad surprises, now I know I can add my user to more groups for different purposes. But I still don't like how it's a bit hacked (instead of a working directly from a clean install). Oh well, it works for now. And you definitely helped a lot: * my communication style is hopefully more direct * many important files/folders I wouldn't have noticed without you. Specially trying with a new user, which revealed to me the location of the xorg log (well hidden). So (o^^)o thanks again albertoefg!!!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Bingo, adding my user to input did work. But I'm not satisfied: * .xinitrc should load X automatically, it doesn't. * Why do I need to add my user to the input group? Do I need to belong to other groups just to have a functional machine? And, uh, that would be pretty much it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
It seems I need to add myself in the input group: https://github.com/bulletmark/libinput-gestures/issues/7 But How come I'm not into this group in the first place? Well, I'll test that first, because there's no point to this question if it doesn't solve the issue.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
is it fine in terms of free software? If so, I guess I can find them on nvidia's website? But I thought my GPU worked just fine with Nouveau (which it does, even right now with an incomplete startx launch).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
this (https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/149985/startx-cannot-open-dev-fb0-permission-denied) seems interesting.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Before trying to fix (most likely format) my thumb drive and fetching the full logs, I'll reboot into the new user and try startx again. It seems startx might be occupied by the old user.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
In the original user's xorg's log, in addition to what's listed for the new test user: * (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting (and for fdev on the line efter) * (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa * (WW) VGA arbiter: cannot open kernel arbiter, no multi-card support * (EE)xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/event2 Permission denied. * right after: (II)opening input device '/dev/input/event2' failed (Permission denied) * right after: (II) failed to create input device '/dev/input/even2' * (EE) libinput: Power Button: Failed to create a device for /dev/input/event2 * (EE)Preinit returned 2 for "Power Button" * (II) Unload module: libinput (to be continued, my hands hurt :p)
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Good call, with the new user, I can't launch startx at all, and it seems I have now access to some xorg log. The plot unfolds (I hope so)!
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Sure, I just added exec i3. But my original one is like this: #!/bin/sh # /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc # # global xinitrc file, used by all X sessions started by xinit (startx) # invoke global X session script . /etc/X11/Xsession /usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 # & exec dbus-launch ck-launch-session i3 [[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources #export SUDO_ASKPASS=/bin/dpass.sh sudo -A $(dmenu_path | dmenu) #export SUDO_ASKPASS="$HOME/bin/dpass.sh" sudo -A $(dmenu_path | dmenu) # Start the window manager: #if [ -z "$DESKTOP_SESSION" -a -x /usr/bin/ck-launch-session ]; then # exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/i3 #else # exec /usr/bin/i3 #fi # The x11 line was already there. # The lxpolkit line is supposed to launch lxpolkit on startup. # The i3 line was supposed to solve the issue. # The last one works, it's to launch the config file of urxvt. Keep in mind that I'm sure it works both on other machines and on this same machine, but when the partition wasn't encrypted (meaning there was 3 partitions: for /, for /home and for /swap). I don't have xorg-xinit, but I installed xorg --no-install-recommends, which also worked just fine when the partition wasn't encrypted (meaning there was 3 partitions: for /, for /home and for /swap). I do have both startx and xinit, and I don't remember on other installs if I had the .xinitrc provided as default. I can try another WM or even a DE. But really, I see no difference with the working install and this one besides encryption, and a slightly different partitioning scheme. Up to this point, we eliminated: * config files (ownership and permissions, disabling some of them like bashrc and xinitrc) * completely removing i3 an launching startx gives me a tty with a different font, and the keyboard behaves just the same (inactive, numpad led always on or off, depending on how it was befre launching startx) * reinstalling xorg. Maybe purge xorg wasn't enough? * encryption shouldn't be an issue since the partition is opened before reaching the tty. * Maybe I've made a mistake during the install, but besides having a separated /boot, I did nothing out of the ordinary. Plus I have no boot issues anyway. /root (including another /boot partition without the initialization option), /home and /swap are just logical volumes of the same encrypted volume group. What I can also try is to redo a non-encrypted install, but with the exact same partitioning scheme and see how it goes.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Uh, something new: * I deleted i3 (apt-get purge, autoremove, clean), and startx still lands me in i3 * I removed the (empty) i3 folder present in .config, but I still land in i3...
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
As it could be important, one thing I did during the install is the following: the /boot partition I set up as the one to be initialized. But now in my directory tree, I see in / another /boot folder, and also another /lost+found (the same I find in /home).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
I only have a .bashrc, and a .profile which redirects to .bashrc. I renamed it to _old (same wit .xinitrc), the issue still remains.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Compared to a working install, /home, and the folders and files inside it have the same ownership and permissions. I can try with a fresh copy of .xinitrc from /etc/X11/xinit and modify it accordingly (with exec i3).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
OK, I'll try this, thanks again.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Yes, no dedicated /home encryption, but an encrypted partition containing /home, /root and /swap. On the other hand, I have other fully encrypted disks (nothing installed on them though). No custom config files by default yet (besides the .xinitrc for testing). I notice now that /home belongs to root. inside home, I have: * my user folder which belongs to me as a user (so not root) * I have a lost+found belonging to root * also "." and ".." listed as belonging to root. I tried to get inside one of these, but it either brings me forward or back from the the folder I'm in.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Many thanks for your help albertoefg! root user has a different config file that is not in /home but in /root If you encrypted disk and /home when you unlock at boot you are only unblocking the disk but not /home Make sure /home is decrypted before startx On the disk where the system is installed, I created /boot and left it unencrypted, and used a whole partition where /home, /root and /swap were created. On boot, I unput my decrypting passphrase (twice), which is supposed to unlock the partition containing /root, /home and /swap. Then I input my account login and passphrase), where I land in a tty. I didn't check the rights of the /home folder itself yet (though I did check the its content, which is owned by me as the user, and it belongs to my group).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
You're right, let me try again this way then: * the keyboard and mouse respond very well in the shell (well not the mouse of course), but after startx, which boots i3wm, it doesn't. * the keyboard doesn't activate the screen after moments of inactivity. * It did work after startx on an earlier non-encrypted install. But after encrypting /home and /swap, I have this. * i3/the X session didn't freeze as the time display progresses. * This time I enabled the numpad, and what's odd is that he led stays on even if I unplug, then replug the keyboard. I tried to switch to a tty, or even kill the X session, but neither the mouse or keyboard react. * ALL of these issues cease if I use sudo startx instead, which isn't recommended. * my manual .xinitrc in ~ insn't recognised (it worked on the attempt without encrypted partitions) because X and i3 aren't launched on startup. * I have read and write rights, plus I'm the owner of the files in ~. * removing .Xauthority didn't work. * After a third install, this time only leaving /boot unencrypted, my usb keyboard can't open the encrypted partition.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Smart Phone Recommendations, Please
Not a full guarantee, but removing the battery should also prevent modem activity. Some phones have a dedicated battery, but it's the CMOS type (for the date/time), it should not be capable of keeping the modem on. But really, even with the Neo900, the only choice is either having a functional phone (=a phone that can receive calls) and being traced, or having having a dead piece of plastic/metal and being untraceable. Bippers could have been a good addition (phone off+bipper on=still can be reached, without traceability), but the cost is too heavy on the caller, so it's not worth it. So it necessarily means that at least from point A to B, your geolocation can be gathered. but if the phone is unreachable, that gives some geolocation privacy between A & B. Personally, while I find it disturbing, trading my geolocation vs having a functional phone, is kind of OK. If for some reason I need to go undercover, the phone can simply remain at home, or faraday cage, or removing the battery etc. What bothers me much more is the modem isolation. Supposedly good modem isolation is better than nothing, but it bothers me that it could have access to the personal data on the phone. Geolocation, on the other hand, I don't really care.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
No, any of the bash files are the default ones. The i3 config is also the default (I didn't have the opportunity to copy my personal config yet). It's basically a fresh install (with the drive erased) with xorg, i3 and pcmanfm installed. I added a personal .xinitrc just to see if it would work the way it did previously (before encrypting partitions).

Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
sudo startx worked. It's not recommended, so it's not a solution.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
I'm even more sure that i3/the X session didn't freeze as the time display progresses. This time I enabled the numpad, and what's odd is that he led stays on even if I unplug, then replug the keyboard. I tried to switch to a tty, or even kill the X session, but neither the mouse or keyboard react. Even the Sysrg+R or something like that (I tried with and without caps) does nothing. I'll try to fetch the Xorg log. It seems I can get it with journal ctl -e _COMM=Xorg.bin Not sure it's related yet, but I've read about: * service dbus start && service hald start * in /etc/rc.conf --> dbus_enable="YES" * check the Xorg.conf in /etc/X11/ But before trying things, I want to get a more accurate diagnostic.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Encryption shouldn't be an issue after unlocking the disks/partition. I don't understand. The install went just the same way beyond the partitioning. It must be something related to xorg. It kinda makes sense for the USB keyboard not available until reaching the shell though.
[Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)
Hi, the keyboard and mouse respond very well in the shell (well not the mouse of course), but after startx, which boots i3wm, it doesn't. At first I thought i3wm was freezing, but the mouse pointer changed from the waiting icon to the normal pointer after a bit (yet still immovable). And the keyboard doesn't activate the screen after moments of inactivity. It did work after startx on an earlier non-encrypted install. But after encrypting /home and /swap, I have this. Maybe it's a matter of groups/user rights. After a third install, this time only leaving /boot unencrypted, my usb keyboard can't open the encrypted partition (though it worked at first).
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's wrong with OpenMailBox?
It seems more complex than I thought. The config makes it even less likely to be used by friends/family. And you're right again, I didn't think about the hardware. One more downside. My perspective is always the random normal user who's privacy conscious. To me it would be the rare case of "I don't have my computer with me, but I have to check my emails". Considering all that, the Tails method isn't vital. Nonetheless, if more people I know are willing to use GPG for emails, I'd go along with it.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's wrong with OpenMailBox?
I see, so for personal machines (including a Replicant phone, though there's no guarantee the private key can't be accessed from the modem), problem solved. So Thunderbird + Enigmail on Tails would need some config on each boot? Too bad, as if it wasn't annoying enough to reboot from a thumbdrive. About the "targeted" argument: Sure but that's socially acceptable encryption (not the kind of encryption that would attract attention, even though perfectly legal and reasonable). In a way, all this is meaningless https://www.xkcd.com/538/ But to me, the point is simply to cover as much leaks as possible/reasonable, to as many unwanted third-party readers possible/reasonable. Which should be normal use. I mean if people prevent their emails to be accessed by other people, it makes sense that the mail provider (and more commercial/governmental entities) should get the same treatment, legally. Well, actually I still wonder why I put so much effort into all this. I guess I consider it forbidding legal but abusive behavior. Legally. Or at least making it harder to put in practice. So, their argument that it might increase exposure has some truth, which is why I have a hard time answering that. OTOH, which is better: having all my data on diplay but not being on the radar (in theory), or possibly standing out a bit more, but having very little of my data on display? Frankly, I don't like option n°1.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Random disconnects
I recently have regular Wi-Fi disconnections. Turns out removing the X200 laptop from it's base helped, and probably getting closer to the source helped just as much. I'll have to test again soon, but it never happened before.
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's wrong with OpenMailBox?
Another problem of a personal mail server is that the most common webmails might reject it as spam. For other uses than email, a personal server is still a great idea. Ah, right, the title isn't encrypted, I forgot. Regarding privacy, security and reliability, encryption seems to still be the best best, in this regard a popular proprietary mailbox is actually fine, since communicating with one is virtually unavoidable. I guess you're right: the true downside is having other people using it. For this: * I remember someone here suggesting to put links and GPG key in the email signature * A couple of tutorials were suggested to me. Roughly, it's about installing Thunderbird, a plugin, generating keys and using it. I wonder if building a special script/installer that does ALL of that would be a good idea. A one click install, regardless of the OS. The other obstacle would be reading emails on other devices the easy way (yet safely enough). Even if configuring the same mailbox with GPG on Tails could be easy, no way most people would do it. Last but not least, the argument that "if I do all of that, I'd be listed/targeted by the government, even more than we all are now. I would be standing out". It's a bit tough to answer that, actually.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Smart Phone Recommendations, Please
The info is very hard to find. Short of going into a (rare) dedicated shop, all the links are dead (the french Tatoo goes back to 95 though). I only found that in "francs", sending a message (numeric only) costs 3,71. Roughly half a €, which is a lot to ask to any sender. Worse, it seems it actually now costs around 2€! But it's still working, a german company runs the show. Too bad the costs are so high, it would be a cool thing to have :( Plus I'm sure it can actually cost much less, just like for text messaging (which are still overpriced compared to their probable cost to the phone company). Oh well, So it's either being reachable, or being geotracked. Tough frankly I don't really care so much aout my geolocation being available (as long as I can switch off when I want to). The true problem is modem isolation. It's like having your internet box soldered to your computer.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Streaming a power point presentation in a video conference
The simplest way would be this: https://meet.jit.si/ provided it's not too crowded, and provided it fully works. Else Jitsi works better if you can get past the glitchy install (don't install from the repo, it's outdated, and get a good xmpp provider. A search on the forum might give you more info on this).
Re: [Trisquel-users] What's wrong with OpenMailBox?
Interesting. So the most common mail providers might not allow encrypted emails to pass? To make sure we're talking about the same method, I'm talking about using something like Thunderbird instead of the Webmail. - A few more remarks: * Both persons need to use a libre OS, but even then, at least the email provider can't read a thing. So that's already one GAFAM player out of the game. * Indexation of encypted email doesn't work. But if not using the webmail, it shouldn't be a problem. - in a nutshell: * I might misunderstand it, but I don't see the point of having a libre email provider, or even a personal email server (trusting the provider, communicating with non-free mailboxes cancels the point, even more if mails are fetch to the non-free OS, etc.). * as for GPG, although it's (to me) the best way, it demands some preparation that most aren't willing to make, and that might be tricky (if using someone else's PC for example, or your smartphone). I guess that's where Tails comes into play (most people wouldn't make the effort of using it though). Setup on several machines, including smartphone and Tails, that's A LOT of work. Too tempting to simply connect to the webmail only to find that the encrypted emails are unreadable. I guess I'll have to try.
