For Pidgin, you may want to try the PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~pidgin-developers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
GNU Ring should be in the repositories so should be as easy to install as
running the apt-get command! (I just tried it, and it definitely works)
It's worth remembering that Trisquel 7 is
Dear all,
Ever since I became convinced of the importance of the Free Software
movement, I - an average joe computer user - have been only using free
software for my personal computing. I applaud all the efforts.
However, there is much work to be done. Let me briefly explain my situation:
Compiling Linux-libre is easy... but configuring it is not: always keep a
functional kernel installed since the one you build yourself may not boot if
you forgot to include essential modules for your hardware!
If you only do that, you will not learn anything. And not have a kernel that
is specifically configured for your hardware. The next step, 'make gconfig'
(or use whatever other interface you happen to like), is the interesting/hard
part: you will be drowning into a huge amount of components
I see, thanks! :)
How the h*** do I install GTK+?

Are you referring to Meltdown and Spectre? Those attacks have absolutely
nothing to do with the Management Engine.
Having up-to-date is important to be protected against known attacks such as
Meltdown and Spectre. Newer kernel may better support your hardware too,

I did not know that "make gconfig" was stuck with GTK 2 (not 3). Just use
another interface. 'make xconfig' for instance.

Some days ago while the Intel ME thing was fresh, jxself had a fix in the
4.14.12 kernel, now there's a 4.14.13 on the releases page:
http://linux-libre.fsfla.org/pub/linux-libre/releases/ , my question is
simple: how important is it to always have the latest kernel?
Well that brings me to the question: How the hell do I install the xconfig Qt
thing? :p

I'm using Trisquel 8 and loving it! Does anyone know of a good libre

Abrowser support would be perfect.

I just use Abrowser's bookmarks, that you can tag. https://wallabag.org
directly compete with Pocket. Being free software, you can install it on
your own server.
Also what's the difference between all the places where one can get kernels?
You have jxself https://jxself.org/linux-libre/
and fsfla https://www.fsfla.org/ikiwiki/selibre/linux-libre/
and probably many more...
If 'make xconfig' does not work either, use 'make menuconfig'. This one will
work for sure.
I recommend XMPP, and any client software that is able to use Jingle,
and has it enabled. If I remember correctly, Trisquel's Pidgin has it
enabled.
At GNU Guix, we need some help to get both Pidgin and Gajim to have
Jingle enabled.
Jingle works well with one-to-one voice/video.

Why not? The test proves it behaves better. It doesn't chatter in the

I doubt that. What you haven't seen is the other 6 or so other 3.x versions I

Bob\n' | sed 's/[AP]M/\0\n\n/g; s/Received from/\n\n\0/g'
For safety purposes, sed doesn't replace the contents of the file,
unless you pass `-i' to it.

You made quite a good summary. Just to clarify:
I am not looking for an argument in the sense of stating something and then
proving it. The clarifications I made just for the sake of better mutual
understanding, not in order to oppose for the sport of it (which would be

Fair enough. It doesn't deal *exclusively* with Trisquel, so I'll err on the
side of caution and keep it in this thread so it can be buried/deleted. :D
