[TV orNotTV] In hosting news

2016-10-14 Thread M-D November
NBC News has already updated the "Today's Take" open to remove all host names
(the VO now simply says "From NBC News...this is Today's Take...live from
studio 1A". This is should similar to what they did in the weeks leading up to
the Rio Olympics, when it became known that Natalie Morales was relocating to
LA for "Access Hollywood" -
and Willie Geist would be relieved of weekday duties to focus on the Sunday
show.

NBC blinked and "Unstoppable," an "SVU" episode guest starring Gary Cole as
a flamboyant candidate accused of sexual proclivity, was rescheduled from
Oct. 26 to sometime after the election:

[TV orNotTV] Rules On Misleading Drug Ads

2016-10-14 Thread PGage
I winder if anyone here is familiar with the specifics of the regulations
on advertising drugs on television. I only see a small fraction of TV ads,
but one just now made it through my zapping efforts - for "Invokana" a drug
that is apparently approved to treat Type II Diabetes and lower blood
sugars. In the ad a voice says: "It's not for lowering systolic blood sugar
or weight, bit it may help with both". While multiple images of lowering
things appear on the screen. The final image includes three circles, the
center large and red containing "A1C" (a blood sugar test) and a downward
arrow;and two smaller blue circles, each also with a downward arrow, one
with "blood pressure" the other with "body weight".

The clear effect of this ad is to create the impression that Invokana can
be taken to lose weight and lower BP, though it seems from the disclaimer
it has not been approved for this use. A number of Big Pharma Corps have
had their hands spanked for this kind of misleading advertising ("spanked"
because the fines are in the millions while profits are in billions). I
seem to recall a birth control pill maker got into high profile trouble a
few years ago.

My question: Is this Invokana ad in violation, and the company is wiling to
take a spanking to make millions, or are they safely within the bounds of
current regulations?

Re: [TV orNotTV] In hosting news

2016-10-14 Thread Mark Jeffries
And John Hodgman next week.

Thile has only thirteen new shows to prove himself, although I assume
they'll be spread out. There'll probably be a Kellior rerun within the
next few weeks. And since the "sponsors" are the same familiar ones from
all these years, one wonders if "Manuel Transmission" (Kellior's most
recent pseudonym for himself as a writer) will still be heard in the
credits. I would also expect that the Powdermilk Biscuits jingle will
still be heard in the first hour as the secret station break (Kellior would
not agree to what has become the standard breaks at :20 and :40 on most
public radio shows for mostly promos and underwriting announcements--so
standard that even Amy Goodman does it--sort of--so as a compromise in the
first hour what will now be Thile saying "Powdermilk Biscuits, heavens
they're tasty and expeditious!" is the cue for stations who choose to do so
to run their break, preferably with just an announcer talking over the band
playing the Powdermilk jingle--and Thile will start singing the jingle at
exactly one minute from the band starting to play, so the station announcer
better hit the post--on other shows, the break is 90 seconds to 2 minutes).

Harry Connick Jr will host the third hour of today on the 17th and 18th (the
Variety link says just Monday, but an email I received from Connick's fan club
says both days).  Not sure if this is still technically subbing for Billy Bush
or not.
http://variety.com/2016/tv/news/harry-connick-today-billy-bush-1201889493/

Already saying I'm a fan of Connick, take my thumbs up of his daytime talk show
with the appropriate amount of salt.  The Stangels from Letterman's Late Show
are co-executive producers, but there are plenty of daytime-style talk segments.

Tomorrow (15th) marks the first Prairie Home Companion with Chris Thile as
host.  The lineup (see link) is consistent with the shows that Thile has served
as guest host.  Plenty of people who have been on with Garrison, with a few
additions aimed at younger listeners (really anyone under 60).  Thile will play
an original song, there will be a comedian, and most of the supporting cast
from Keillor's crew remain with the show.

I solved the key problem by replacing the front door lock with a keypad lock.
Any time the caregiver was changed I reset the code, and if there was a period

still worked with a key.

NBC never overstuffed the between inning breaks in the 80s- but back then
breaks were shorter too. Plus NBC preempted everything for the
playoffs-they might show their Monday Night Movie, but that was it(and most
Monday games in that era started at 3pm to avoid MNF.)

Matt Vasgersian was the play-by-play announcer on the Cubs-Giants series.

I spent all year watching games on one of Fox's RSNs -- the Tampa Bay Rays
broadcasts on Fox Sports Sun -- and felt they actually did a better job
throughout the season than Fox is doing on these playoff games. A few
observations:

1. Rays broadcasts had the FoxTrax pitch map on-screen for every pitch, and I
kind of grew to depend on it.

2. The between-inning breaks are longer in the postseason than in the regular
season, and even still, Fox has been overstuffing them -- even having to
sometimes dump out of a commercial early so as not to miss the first pitch of
an inning. (This could be the fault of the umpires jumping the gun on the
in-stadium countdown clock, but I never saw this issue during the regular
season with the commercial load they had during the Rays games.)

3. I think Harold Reynolds is the new Tim McCarver -- for the most part, I
didn't find his comments particularly interesting or insightful (there were a
number of times he just restated pretty much what Kenny Albert had just said),
and he had issues such as mixing up Justin Turner of the Dodgers with Trea
Turner of the Nationals a few times.

My family, however, resists bringing in outside care of any sort for dad,
not from the fear that insurance won't cover it (it generally does, tho
with clearly-stated exceptions), but from the fear of strange people having
to come to the house, and possibly needing keys to let themselves in.

They appear to fear that what to others is often a welcome sight, is a
danger to them. They're not generally paranoid, this is just a specific
fear they have. I partially blame it on right-wing talk radio, to which dad
still tries to listen every day.

Dave,
Congratulations to Pidge for being a great two-day champion. Sorry to see
her fall on the third day... she really looked like she was enjoying
herself all along, which is all this viewer wants in a champion.

I did get a laugh on her second day, during the "Meet the Press" category
(I think Pidge either ran the category or came close). At one point they
showed a photograph of onetime MTP guest Bill DeBlasio, and the male
contestant rang in and asked "Who is Vernon Jordan?" Hey, I'm pretty dumb,
but even I know Vernon Jordan isn't a white guy!

BTW, Alex is drawing some flak for a rather innocent joke he made to the
contestant who ended up besting Pidge:

Well, it made me laugh. Maybe not the greatest joke in the world, but at
least Alex has a sense of humor, which is more than I can say for the
people responding to him...
