Rice-a-Roni)--afterwards, she was in the original Broadway cast of "Grease" 
before a stint on "Search for Tomorrow" and six years as Julia on "The 
Young and the Restless"--co-creator Bill Bell knew that she would rewrite 
her lines and asked her to become a writer on the show--she later won an 
Emmy in 1995 as a writer on "General Hospital":

[TV orNotTV] 'Ridiculousness' Writers Get Union Contract, But...

The writers of the viral video show that dominates the MTV program 
schedule, who were hidden under credits like "creative consultant" and 
"segment producer," are now under a WGA contract with better pay and 
benefits, but considering the current state of cable TV, could it be 
possible that someone at Paramount Global will decide that there are more 
than enough episodes of the series for their purposes? Or, as is highly 
possible, Paramount is sold to someone else or either the old or new owners 
decide to get out of the dead end business of cable TV programming, could 
the decision be that they don't need a clip show with WGA writers?:

An extra episode of the ID docuseries about how big a creep Nickelodeon 
producer Dan Schneider was will air Sun. Apr. 7 (and stream on Max and 
Discovery+ the next day) featuring several of the interviewees from the 
series talking with Soledad O'Brien about the response to the series (which 
revealed things about Schneider that have been known for years, but hey...):

And if certain podcasts and YouTube countdowners can be believed, it wasn't 
just Schneider and that acting coach at the First Network for Kids--Amber 
Frank, who worked on the early 2010s Nick sitcom "The Haunted Hathaways" at 
the Paramount lot far away from Schneider on Sunset Blvd., has said that 
was some creepiness going on their set, although perhaps not as bad. (I 
have to admit that I watched that show because a former Chicago actress I 
knew played the mom.)

better-than-expected ratings, CBS has signed a long-term contract for the 
highly-problematic awards and also picked up another property from the 
now-initial capped DIck Clark Productions (owned by Penske, who runs most 
of the showbiz trades), the American Music Awards, last seen on ABC in 
November 2022, joining the MTV VMAs, the CMT awards and the Grammys (and 
the Recording Academy can't be too happy about this):

The link says that this came up after a host of BBC Radio 4's "Today"
programme (no relation to or not to be confused with our "Today" show) said
"trans women, in other words, males" on the air in referring to a story
about whether biological males have an advantage in chess (they obviously
never saw "The Queen's Gambit"). Sounds like the guy was auditioning to
replace Piers Morgan on Rupert's TalkTV or one of the Tory politicians that
the government regulators say cannot host shows on GBNews anymore.

The satellite service that seems to always have negotiation problems with 
station groups over carriage fees says that it will knock $12 a month off 
the bill if the customer decides that they don't need their local stations, 
which should cover the cost of a digital antenna on top of the TV, but

[TV orNotTV] CBS Announces First New Daytime Soap in 25 Years

The publicity has been about the fact that "The Gates" is the first daytime 
soap centered around Black characters since the 1989 NBC show 
"Generations," but more importantly, it is the first new daytime  soap 
since NBC premiered the rather gonzo "Passions" in 1999 (it went off in 
2008).  Even more importantly, it is a return to one of the two longtime 
pillars of daytime television (along with game shows) that have been 
reduced in recent years, with only three remaining on the networks (four if 
you count "Days of Our Lives" streaming on Peacock).  And it is the first 
new show in years from Procter & Gamble Productions, once the power 
producer of daytime soaps ("As the World Turns," "Guiding LIght," "Edge of 
Night," etc., etc.), but not active since "World" went off in 2010:

[TV orNotTV] God Bless C-SPAN CEOs Retiring After Decades With Channel

Rob Kennedy and Susan Swain have been co-CEOs at the beloved cable public 
affairs channel for the last 12 years following employment at the channel 
since the 80s (I also remember that Swain has hosted the channel's infamous 
call-in programs many times)--Kennedy leaves in May and will be replaced by 
finance VP Matt Deprey, Swain will be replaced by one of those "national 
searches" that have become common at NFPs in the search for racial 
diversity, she will stay through a transition period:

Kennedy and Swain had the challenges of the pandemic and the slow death of

that the bosses denied him a staff writer job and hired minorities and 
women with less experience instead, in accordance with diversity guidelines 
set by Paramount, and is asking for $500,000 and a court order giving him a 
production position on "SEAL Team" and barring future similar hiring

[TV orNotTV] Take That, Colbert! 'Tracker' Gets Renewed

The action series that was the post--Super Bowl attraction for CBS and 
target for several Stephen Colbert jokes (and I believe at least one Taylor 
Tomlinson joke) about CBS being CBS has been renewed for a second season:

Interestingly enough, the last post-Big Game scripted show, the Queen 
Latifah "Equalizer" reboot in 2021, the last time CBS had the game, also 
became a hit. In 2022, NBC ran Olympics coverage and Fox ran the second 
season of one of their quarterly Gordon Ramsay shows.  One wonders how 
Nickelodeon's lead-out to their Big Game coverage, a double pump of their 
new animated series "Rock Paper Scissors" (one episode being "The Fart Joke 
Episode"--yeah,  baby) did--and shouldn't the kids be in bed by 10:54? 
"Tracker" also ran after the game in Canada on CTV.

[TV orNotTV] Foxxes Back in the 'Beat Shazam' Henhouse

After hospitalization that put him out of commission for most of last year, 
Jamie Foxx and daughter Corrine will be on the flight to Shannon, Ireland 
airport to front a seventh season of the Fox music game show, which is 
scheduled to premiere on May 28:

While Foxx was laid up, "Masked Singer" host and chronic procreator Nick 
Cannon filled in along with Kelly Osbourne as the fake DJ.  Foxx was also

sexual predator Anthony Anderson and his walking sassy Black old woman 
stereotype mother.

It's interesting that Australia seems to be the only country that runs land
acknowledgement statements in their TV show credits. Even the U.S. reality
comp "Come Dance With Me," which was taped in Melbourne and aired on CBS,
ran a land acknowledgement statement.  And the pubcaster ABC now runs the
First Nations name for the state they are telecasting in on their regional
newscasts in a graphic behind the anchor at the beginning of the program. I
am sure that the rightwing AM radio talk show hosts and the commentators on
the Murdoch family's Sky News (or Fox News Australia) are royally peeved.

That whole "tonight on" thing was a response to pressure from certain
people about too many shows having flashy teases that had nothing to do
with the rest of the show--basically, like James Bond movies. "Ellery
Queen" did "tonight on" very well, following the premise of the original
stories  you are challenged to come up with whodunit. It got replaced by
"previously on...", thanks to "Hill Street Blues."

Former Miami Herald restaurant critic Carlos Frias had taken over as host 
of WLRN's "Sundial" arts program two years ago and was fired along with his 
staff when the station said they wanted to put more money into their 
website news coverage--Frias has filed complaints with Florida and federal 
employment commissions, claiming that the Latino bosses at his station were 
telling him that he had "too many Latinos" as guests on his program, a 
strange accusation considering it's Miami, but if his bosses were going by 
the stereotype of the typical NPR listener as rich (unless they're

Greatly appreciated.  As I read your post I had already fired up "TDS" 
(which was recorded from Paramount Network, not COM, so I'm assuming 
Paramount did a zombie channel roadblock of "TDS" last night). I 
immediately stopped the DVR as the credits for "Titanic" were running at 
triple speed over the last scene. I then deleted and went to Paramount+.

attack on the "Sesame Street" Muppet beloved by present-day children but

to go on to plug "Curb Your Enthusiasm," comparing it to treatment

Chicago Tribune TV critic Nina Metz, a huge supporter of the 22-episode 
once-a-week season that steamers seemed to be getting away from to be more 
like HBO (although as an avid ACAB person, she wouldn't mind if there 
weren't any police procedurals), asked former network exec Preston "The 
Masked Scheduler" Breckman about this, pointing out the recent report that 
the most popular shows on streaming are familiar TV (including that USA 
Network blue sky show starring the Duchess of Sussex)--Breckman replies 
that there are already shows on streamers (like Netflix's "Virgin River" 
and "The Lincoln Lawyer") that would fit in a traditional television 
schedule and that basically, the more TV tries to change, the more it

But it has to be pointed out that Swift left country music years ago, as
has some other artists, notably Maren Morris (who had a crossover hit with
a dance music DJ). Swift has never said anything about it as far as I know,
but Morris in a New Yorker article pretty much said that the conservatism
of the country music industry--politically and otherwise--is why she chose
to go elsewhere for her muse.

[TV orNotTV] Fox--Where Shows Get Renewed Sooner

"Animal Control," the Joel McHale workplace comedy that is one of only 
three scripted live-action series on the current Fox schedule, won't begin 
its second season until next month (with a lead-in in the weakening "Masked 
Singer"), but Fox has already given it a renewal for a third 
season--remember, live-action series don't have the long lead time animated 
series have, so this could bite Fox in the--donkey:

even though they're produced in Atlanta, have the same Irish production 
company do post-production work in Ireland, since everything now is 
computer files instead of tape reels.

[TV orNotTV] CNN Goes Hard News in AM

The troubled "CNN This Morning," one of the more high-profile decisions of 
Chris "The Paste-Eater" Licht, is being shut down, the hosts being 
reassigned, the couch put out in the Hudson Yards dumpster (and the NY 
staff either reassigned or laid off) and will be replaced by an expanded 
edition of their morning hard news block from the CNN Center in Atlanta, 
meaning that they're going with hard news against the cheery network shows 
(and CBS lately has cut down on the hard news emphasis), Coffee Joe on 
MSNBC and the morons on the curvy couch on Fox News:

station WVON, asked fellow DJ Joe "Youngblood" Cobb to record an opening 
for his new local TV show. Cobb's cry of "The SOOOUUL 
TRIN!" was heard on the local show on WCIU and when the show became a 
national program and ran for 45 years. Cobb, now 80 and long out of radio 
but running a popcorn store in Little Rock, got residuals for that 
recording during the original run, but he says that he gets nothing from 
the DVDs, repeats and ringtones ever since Cornelius' estate sold the 
rights to Magic Johnson in 2012 and  Johnson sold the rights to BET in 
2016, is now suing Paramount Global and two subsidiaries (one of them BET)

Of course, they are following the Super Bowl, the series premiere of 
"Tracker" and local news on Sun. Feb. 11 and CBS says that they will be 
starting at the normal time of 11:35 p.m. ET that night, but knowing past

Doug Liman ("Bourne Identity," "Mr. & Mrs. Smith") says that he made the 
remake of the 1989 Patrick Swayze vehicle (with Jake Gyllenhaal in the 
Swayze role of the world's greatest bouncer who tells his assistants to "be 
nice" until you can't) to be enjoyed in a theater and is pissed that Amazon 
MGM is dropping the film on Prime on Mar. 21 without a theatrical run and 
is so pissed that he will not be attending the screening opening South by 
Southwest in Austin on Mar. 8, claiming that Amazon is more interested in 
selling plumbing fixtures than movies:

[TV orNotTV] The Streaming Oscar Count 2024

Once again, the following are the films nominated for Oscars that were 
primarily made for streamers and received either a token run for nomination 
or a limited run before they started appearing on the streamer (the 
day-and-date as theatrical release streaming release that happened during 
the pandemic is pretty much over with the exception of 
Universal/Peacock--and the films they do it for will never get Oscar 
nominations)--we're not counting "Killers of the Flower Moon" or 
"Napoleon," because even though they were made for AppleTV+, they did 
receive full theatrical releases by Paramount and Sony, respectively:

MAESTRO (Netflix):  Picture, actor Bradley Cooper as Lenny baby, actress 
Carey Mulligan as his wife (wink wink), original screenplay (co-written by 
Cooper), cinematography, makeup/hair styling (yes, the controversial nose),

NYAD (Netflix):  Actress Annette Bening as the famous swimmer, actress 
Jodie Foster as her coach
RUSTIN (Netflix):  Actor Colman Domingo as the title civil rights leader
MAY DECEMBER (Netflix):  Original screenplay
SOCIETY OF THE SNOW (Netflix):  International feature (Spain),  
makeup/hairstyling
NIMONA (Netflix):  Animated feature
THE ETERNAL MEMORY (Paramount+):  Documentary feature (from MTV Documentary 
Films, run by former HBO doc maven Sheila Nevins)

FLAMIN' HOT (Disney+/Hulu):  Song "The Fire Inside," written by Diane

It very much proves that among the streamers, only Netflix is really 
interested in playing the Oscar game these days, despite Bela Bejaria's 
statements about "gourmet cheeseburgers." It seemed to me that Amazon 
putting "Saltburn" quickly on Prime and declaring it as an "Amazon 
original" was an attempt to get Oscar nods, but it didn't work, since 
audiences were so divisive about the film. We shall find out the results 
Mar. 10 on ABC, with your host Jimmy Kimmel.

[TV orNotTV] UNI Makes Streamer for Free Deal with Charter

Similar to the deal Charter and Disney made that makes the Disney+ ad tier 
available to Spectrum subscribers, TelevisaUnivision has agreed in their 
new carriage deal to include an ad tier of their VIX Spanish-language 
streamer--it also looks like all of UNI's channels are still on Spectrum 
(although generally the main tiers only see the two OTA nets Univision and 
UniMas [the latter of which is on subchannels in some markets] and of the 
cable channels only general entertainment Galavision and sports TUDN--and I 
would guess that Gala hasn't become zombiefied and showing nothing but 
"Chesperito" reruns):

[TV orNotTV] 'Honeymooners'' 'Trixie' Dies at 99

Joyce Randolph was the last surviving of "with the stars" from the 
so-called Classic 39 1955 cast of Jackie Gleason's "The Honeymooners," 
having started playing Ed Norton's wife in the sketches on Gleason's CBS 
variety show before it spun off into its one season on its own--she left 
Gleason after that, but thanks to the constant rerunning of the Classic 39 
(and the so-called "Lost Episodes" from the variety show that were added to 
the package in the 90s), she is the most well-known Trixie--she died in her 
sleep on Saturday:

The game itself is on Peacock. NBC is airing another playoff game and is
scheduled to run a "Wild Card Playoff Special" at 8 tonight before the game
at 8:30 ET. (The game will be live on WTVJ in Miami and KSHB in KC.) I am
guessing once every minute that the host will be saying "the only way to
see this game is on Peacock--if you don't have Peacock, go to peacocktv.com
and sign up now and you'll see tonight's game!"

Meanwhile, NBC will be offering instead of the game at 8:30 a "Super
Special Preview" of "Deal or No Deal Island," followed by a repeat of

Annie Nightingale was the first woman DJ hired by BBC Radio 1 in 1970--her 
last program was on this past Dec. 19--working at night allowed her not to 
follow a playlist but follow her heart, supporting punk and new wave in the 
70s and techno music for many years thereafter--on television, she was also 
a host of the long-running BBC2 music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test"--she 
died Thursday at her London home after a short illness:

And the CDub has added "The Conners" reruns to the lineup, but running it
once a week.  There have to be people at ABC who just want to wring Tom
Werner's neck for this deal, because it makes it look like the show moved
first-run to CW when it didn't.

As shrinking audiences have thinned the herd of first-run syndicated talk 
and courtroom shows, Jennifer Hudson should consider herself lucky that the 
Fox-owned stations have picked up from Warner Bros. a third season of her 
talk show, which is on the stations' schedules along with Sherri Shepard's 
show from Debmar Mercury, two talk shows produced at Fox-owned stations and 
a raft of game shows, many of them produced in-house by Fox:

It wasn't that many years ago that Warners had seven first-run daily shows 
in syndication, headed by Ellen DeGeneres and the courtroom shows "Judge 
Mathis" and "The People's Court." Ellen retired (and had a scandal 
involving her staff), Mathis and "People's Court"'s Marilyn Millan saw 
their shows cancelled (and were hired by Byron Allen to essentially 
continue their shows under different names) and TMZ was sold to Fox, 
meaning that WB's only daily first-run series remaining are JHud and the 
tabmag "Extra.":

planned and a projected sale to Candle Media, the company owned by former 
Disney execs that had already purchased Reese Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine

The Athletic reports that from at least 2010, the Worldwide Leader would 
list fictitious associate producer names on the credits lists they 
submitted to the Sports Emmys and give the awards for the non-existent 
people to on-air talent, who were ineligible for the programs, since there 
were awards for individuals and the Emmys considered on-air people being 
nominated for programs "double dipping"-- it is estimated that over 30 
Emmys to fakes over the years, most notably for "College Game Day," were
