Re: [U2] the 4 letter word
Some people have really weird tastes. :) You can obviously smoke your cigar in the privacy of your home and use GOTO in the code nobody else will have to deal with. But you can't expect today either to smoke in a room where non-smokers work or program GOTO style in a team of programmers who try to create the code that supposed to be supportable. - Original Message - From: Larry Hiscock [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Sent: Tuesday, October 04, 2005 7:51 PM Subject: RE: [U2] the 4 letter word The-command-that-must-not-be-named is like a fine cigar. If I want to process an entire file, then external select is slower on response, i.e. I have to wait for 2 million records to be selected before processing begins, but is quicker in processing all records. The internal is slower due to the system having to stop what it's doing, find the next group, break out the individual ID's from that group, and then return it to the program - over and over again as it makes it's way through the file. Yes, well that *was* back in '88. :) Actually, I've no idea what UV does; there are many things which were implemented differently from Pr1me INFORMATION, or not at all. I've encountered a number of U2 applications in my normal day-to-day life. First was the Colorado AAA - don't know what app or database they were running, but did note they were running either Dynamic Connect or wIntegrate on the workstation. Second is a furniture chain called American Furniture - they are running the application suite from Storis, I believe. Also, whenever I've bought a car, I've inquired as to whether the dealership is using the Reynolds and Reynolds applications, which use UniVerse. In addition, the local transit agency (RTD), uses UniVerse. P. After I moved to a small city in Iowa a couple of years ago, someone at church asked me if I could help get his company's IT function more smoothly, so I did a few hours of consulting for him over the next couple of months. I asked him what database his company used and he said Informix so it was quite exciting to me when I logged in to find UniVerse running, along with a U2 VAR application. I recall there was a story that when IBM acquired the assets of Informix, they were very surprised to find that they were end-users of a U2 database themselves (in their call center IIRC). And for every 3-4 U2 sites, there is another non-U2 PICK/MV site out there -- pretty impressive for a database that was declared dead more than 20 years ago, eh? --dawn My questions to the list are have any of you had similar experiences and how much of a geek am I to get totally excited about seeing another U2 site in action? Re: [U2] Mvbase 2 Universe
Dave, I don't know if there is a difference between Universe/.nix and Universe/NT with respect to their file restore and account restore verbs. I do know, however, that we have been totally unable to restore an account-save or a file-save from AP, D3, mvBase or GA R91 to UV/NT. Consequently, we wrote two programs, TAPE.DUMP and TAPE.LOAD to dump and load anywhere from one individual file to selected files to all the files in an account, without having to create the files on the target machine before loading them. We have tested these programs in our office *from* AP, D3, mvBase and R91 *to* UV/NT. We have tested them *from* R91 *to* UV/NT on site and the customer is now testing their software on UV/NT. Also, if you are migrating software from mvBase to UV/NT, you may also be aware that UV/NT has no (as in none) multivalue spooler as we know it today in R83, R91, AP, D3, mvBase, MentorPro, etc. etc. The commands STARTPTR, SP-ASSIGN, SP-EDIT, :STARTSPOOLER, LISTPTR, LISTPEQS, etc either do not exist at all or function entirely differently than what you may expect in UV/NT. All print jobs are sent directly to the Windows spooler or, if elected, directly the Windows printer without going thru the Windows spooler. To preserve our customer's ability to continue to use the generic multivalue spooler architecture that he's been using for the past 20+ years, we developed a generic multivalue spooler, called SpoolerPlus(tm), for UV/NT. It contains a spooler file and these spooler commands and functions as much like a generic multivalue spooler as it can given that the printers are not connected directly to the database. In addition to the generic multivalue spooler functionality, SpoolerPlus contains a Queues file that enables you to define the print characteristic of each queue and a Printers file to enter the name of the Windows printer and the name of a printer driver for that printer. The process of assigning a printer to a print queue (STARTPTR) then executes the printer driver (if there is one) which takes the print characteristics from the print queue and print the appropriate ESC sequences to the printer to configure the printer for the print jobs from that print queue. If either of these products are of interest to you, or if you'd just like to compare notes on converting software to UV/NT, please call me for further discussion. We're almost neighbors, so an onsite demo is certainly possible. hth, Dave Dave Taylor President Sysmark Information Systems, Inc. 49 Aspen Way Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274 800-SYSMARK (800-797-6275) (O) 310-544-1974 (P) 800-339-1497 (F) 310-377-3550 Your Source for Integrated EDI Translation and DataSync Integration www.sysmarkinfo.com - Original Message - From: Dave R [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Sent: Wednesday, October 05, 2005 9:08 AM Subject: [U2] Mvbase 2 Universe I need to do an account restore from an mvBase.vtf to universe. RE: [U2] Mvbase 2 Universe
The IBM UniVerse acct.restore does not support the mvBASE .vtf file. You will have to make a SAVE to physical tape. Remember only 1 account at a time. Make your tapes at 8192 for least problems as that is the default on the UniVerse side. From the mvBASE side T-SELECT tape T-ONLINE T-ATT 8192 SAVE SYSTEM accountname (TFY TO: accountname On the IBM UniVerse side 1. Create a temp folder on your Windows machine, for example, d:\temp 2. Log into UniVerse, from UV execute LONGNAMES ON NEWACC 3. From the DOS prompt, go to d:\temp and execute d:\ibm\uv\bin\acct.restore -n -19 -t MT1 4. When restore complete, copy d:\temp\account folder to live accounts folder. 5. Create your account pointer in UniAdmin 5. Log into the new account and run UPDATE.ACCOUNT I think the acct.restore could be modified to work with the .vtf but there is something at the beginning of the .vtf that the shipped acct.restore does not support. [U2] [wIntegrate][UV] Changing emulation parameters via script?
We are running wIntegrate 5.1.1 as a front end to Universe 9.6.1.3 running on W2K. There are many parameters that can be influenced by client side scripting, but I find myself wanting to change a parameter that is established in all of my user's .WIT file that is loaded at startup. I believe the file used for this is specified in the dialog selected by SETUP | TERMINAL. The specific thing I want to change is the line: TerminalCommand = \018, Capture On LocalPrint, 'Printer',,,CAP_DIRECT This makes it so that when the host sends a CHAR(18), it routes all following output to the user's local printer. For reasons a bit too lengthy to get into, our vendor's application which I can not get inside of, asks the user for a print destination before printing. One user option causes a CHAR(18) to be sent. Several hours of experimentation on my part seem to indicate that it is not possible to intercept the CHAR(18). Neither can I (apparently) influence this parameter with client side scripting. If I issue a script command like terminalcommand = \018, I do not get a script error, but nothing changes either. I want to temporarily turn off the ability to spool locally so my app can set up a fairly complex output stream without capturing the output from some user prompts that happen after the capture starts. And no, it's not possible to get all the user prompts out of the way first because, this is an add-on to our vendor's app and I cannot control the placement of the vendor's generic built-in print destination wizmo. Anybody out there figured how to change things specified in a WIT file from inside a script? I don't remember the number of hours but it was something like 30, which I had to pay him (business decision) but which I couldn't bill my client - how can I possibly justify that much time to a client that just wanted some simple report enhancement? So I ate about 25 hours for nice looking code. No... Never again, thanks. Call me selfish but I won't do work that is that extensive for a client unless they sign off on it and they understand that they are getting nothing but cleaner code for the effort - sometimes I do sell that concept, but rarely. Re: [U2] [wIntegrate][UV] Changing emulation parameters via script?
Hi Barry, I suggest: 1) Close all wIntegrate sessions 2) Using the wIntegrate editor, modify the desired .wit file (i.e. wyse50 or wyse60). 3) Locate the line of code you want to modify and duplicate (i.e. TerminalCommand = \018 ,Script 'wintsys\\wit_scr\\CopyPrt') 4) Comment the first duplicated line 5) Replace the second line with the desired command (i.e. terminalcommand = \018,) 6) Save the record and exit the wIntegrate editor Open a wIntegrate session and the desired command should be in place, assuming your referencing the appropriate .wit file. We're not a 24x7 operation, so once the workers on the West coast are gone for the day the UV database is quiet. We've got a total capacity of 800GB on disk, half of which is dedicated to the UV server. I make master/incremental backups of the entire UV server every night at 8:00pm, then run another selective backup of just the UV data after batch processing is done just after midnight.
