Re: [U2] New U2 BDT - V3

2012-03-16 Thread Woodward, Bob
We're using Unidata 6.1 and I don't see us upgrading any time soon.
Will V3 of the DBTools work for us?

Hi Symeon,

This means that BDT doesn't have permission to update XTOOLSUB in
$UDTHOME/sys/SYS_BP. All of our eclipse tools will try to automatically
update XTOOLSUB to make them easier to use with earlier U2 databases.
You can try setting up a connection using a user that has sufficient
privileges or you can follow the old process using the public technote
for updating XTOOLSUB.

Engineering has also already addressed the error message to make it more
meaningful in the next release.

Regards,

Dan

I would like to live in this tool all day long. I have experimented with
BDT some. I just installed BDT v3.0.0 so I'm anxious to learn what is
new about it. I'm having to be able to be productive quickly, so I find
myself reverting back to WED when I have to get something done quick.

It would be helpful if there is an online tutorial, so I could

transition to BDT full time. ?

(I'm only interesting in learning about BDT, not any other alterative
EDIs at this time, thanks)

Re: [U2] New U2 BDT - V3

2012-03-16 Thread Daniel McGrath
Hi Symeon,

This means that BDT doesn't have permission to update XTOOLSUB in
$UDTHOME/sys/SYS_BP. All of our eclipse tools will try to automatically update
XTOOLSUB to make them easier to use with earlier U2 databases. You can try
setting up a connection using a user that has sufficient privileges or you can
follow the old process using the public technote for updating XTOOLSUB.

Engineering has also already addressed the error message to make it more
meaningful in the next release.

Regards,

Dan

I don't think I've ever heard anyone who uses Eclipse talk about how
much they like it, yet it has still managed to become a pervasive IDE.
I actually do use as my main IDE in the form of IBM's Rational
Application Developer for WebSphere. I've never been a fan of the
cluttered interface, but its tight integration with WebSphere App Server
and access to IBM's tech support outweigh the negatives. I suspect
IBM's commercialization and support of Eclipse probably has a lot to do
with its pervasiveness. It's probably going to be a known quantity for
a lot of developers who work at large IBM shops. Rocket's choice may be
a sensible one if they aim to make U2 more appealing to larger
companies.

Re: [U2] New U2 BDT

2012-03-13 Thread Brian Leach
I use Eclipse on my Mac to do iPhone/iPad development.
(you can't deploy native iPhone apps without a Mac)

And it's just as ugly on there - though strangely it's the only thing that
runs quicker on the Mac than on my (identically spec'ed but *ever* so much
faster) Windows 7 Vaio.

I'm sure Doug will disagree, but I find some of the Eclipse UI choices
baffling. Maybe it's just the tools I'm using but there seems to be a
tendency to try to shoehorn too many different plug-ins and languages under
the same limited menu options/choices when they are not really doing the
same thing underneath.

For a single tool (like Doug's editor) I'm sure it's great. But as an
all-things-to-all-men (and women) central IDE for everything you might ever
want to use (and probably won't) I wonder if it's a case of too many cooks.
You can get lost in there.

And before anyone chimes in, yes - I know you can create your own
perspectives to manage these. I've got better things to do.

Somehow, VS seems to manage it better - there's less of an attempt to force
homogeneity onto the various plug-ins and individual features, even though
they sit in the same framework. Though after using their design services to
build my new screen designer, it is a coding and documentation nightmare.
Perhaps that's a good thing!

Each to their own.

Brian

Dunno about the others, but the point of Eclipse is that it's
cross-platform. I guess VS is Windows-only. Netbeans and InteliJ are
they cross-platform?

VS would be useless for me - I run a linux desktop.

Following on to both of those comments... What I'm seeing in this discussion
is that the concept of Eclipse being an extensible IDE is being acknowledged
but largely dismissed. The software itself was never intended to be a
complete package. It's not like "I downloaded Eclipse, now I can do all of
this stuff". It's more like "I downloaded the main Eclipse component, now I
need to add more components to that to create a toolkit that allows me to do
stuff".

This is the difference between freeware and commercially supported packages.
With freeware you get pieces of solutions which you then assemble - you
"pay" for "free" software with your time. There are companies that will
aggregate pieces for you, and sell and support it as a package - this is the
definition of a Linux "distro" which we've all come to appreciate. This is
what Rocket does with their add-ins to some extent. U2Logic has made a
business of extending Eclipse as it was designed. Visual Studio is also
extensible but most developers prefer to stick closer to the defaults. I
use NetBeans for PHP and Java (Android), the extensibility is very similar.

The value of Eclipse is really in the ecosystem that forms around the core
when a Lot of addins are provided by a vibrant developer community. The
software has significant value to PHP and Java developers because other PHP
and Java developers have made investments in creating that ecosystem. Our
industry is still stuck in the "what does it do for me?" mode rather than
"what can we do to extend the platform?". We're an industry of product
users, not tool developers.
In that mode the platform doesn't really have much value to the target
audience. Are efforts by U2Logic and Rocket Software enough to create the
ecosystem which will make the platform compelling? Doug and the U2 team sure
hope so, but they're trying to do this alone and it's not quite working.
They're building in components and wondering why everyone out there doesn't
"get" it. Why are people still asking these questions? Hey, I've been
writing addins for Microsoft Office (another extensible platform seen more
as a product) for a decade, and hoping people would "get" it there too.

I don't think Eclipse is going to have the same respect in this industry as
it does elsewhere until the average person "gets" the concept of plugins,
addons, modules, and extensibility. (And per my recent blogs I'm hoping
people will think about how they can extend Office to integrate it with
their apps as well.) Pick people want everything in front of them so that
they can just get on with their work, they don't want to think about what
"can" be done, they just want it working now. That's hardly unreasonable
but completely not in line with the modern world when the ecosystem of
collaboration ultimately creates that environment where people really can
just get on with their work. I think focus of tool providers needs to shift
a little from "hey, we have these plugins, why don't you use them?" to
"here's information on how to extend Eclipse so you can do this stuff too".
If some people in the Pick market collaborate on extending Eclipse in ways
that help MV developers, then we'll see more in there for "us" - just like
the PHP and Java folks (and others).

The tough thing about this is that everyone wants someone else to do this
stuff, and usually for free. There is no motivation to create an ecosystem
of helpful tools in a new world where people still confuse free/libre with
free/beer. This is a separate discussion but we need to work out some way
for developer/consumers in this industry to compensate other developers with
something other than gratitude for making

have a strong MV FOSS ecosystem, so we're hardly even at the point of
people expressing gratitude for freeware.) This is exactly what the
mobile app markets are all about with 49cent and 99cent apps - sell a
million of those and you don't need to sell for 29.99 or 799.99 per
unit. This is Apple's core model for various product lines, and
Microsoft is going this direction with Windows8 as well. The second
generation of the extensibility model is upon us and Pick people are
still not applying the model to our industry. Adapt or die, folks.

What got me going with BDT was...

I was developing in Flex. Adobe had two ways to do Flex via Flash Builder. At
first I ran Flash Builder as an Eclipse plug-in. There were some quirks with
the plug in and after several months of use, I switched over to the canned
build, that is, Adobe's bona fide Flash Builder launched from a desktop icon.

Right about then Rocket released the first BDT.

Of course, Eclipse is an industry standard. While the learning curve for
first-time Eclipse back then users was frustrating... that hundreds of
companies... among them Rocket, Adobe and u2Logic... build tools using
Eclipse... there is hardly any controversy.

What does Eclipse bring to the table for U2 Developers? (Slightly

many things:

1) Editing programs, dictionaries and data
2) Version control using standards like CVS, SVN, GIT, Perforce, & Team

2) Resizing database files
3) Installer for database files, dictionaries, procs, paragraphs, and

4) Web Developer
5) U2 Administrator functions
6) Other plug-ins for languages like PHP, C++, C, and many more.

In addition to those plug-ins, Eclipse can be leveraged to do everything you
can do from TCL/ECL.

1) Copy and Paste that is thousand times faster than COPY
2) Creating files, programs, dictionaries, procs, and paragraphs
3) Renaming files, programs, dictionaries, procs, and paragraphs
4) Deleting files, programs, dictionaries, procs, and paragraphs
5) Windows like explorer to see all of files in account instead of LISTFL
6) Ability to filter the explorer to see only the files you want
6) Ability to copy from U2 Databases to local for Version Control

Miscellaneous:
1) IDE interface like Visual Studio and others
2) Learning curve is a few days to several weeks depending on prior IDE
experience
3) Local history for all editor changes
4) Ability to have several accounts open at once
5) Built-in compare editor
6) Built-in search engine instead of ESEARCH

There is real power, efficiency that can be gained from an Eclipse IDE.

Eclipse is the same interface for the U2 Web Services, the U2 Restful Services,

interface for the range of U2 products, not just BDT. It is an IDE used by
other technology companies to host their tools. It also has interfaces for
other products. Even Microsoft has an interface for Eclipse tools to integrate

Eclipse also runs on Apple's Macintosh. With a growing base in that market,

Eclipse is a developer framework. Dunno much about it, but the big
advantage it has is a LOT of people know it. It's also Free (libre) so
it's easy to extend if you want to.

If we want U2 to fit in well with other environments, rather than living
in a silo on its own, Eclipse is a good fit. It wouldn't surprise me if
lots of DB2 stuff is written in Eclipse, Oracle stuff, Java stuff, etc etc.

I take your point about "not another tool for us long-suffering U2 guys
to learn", but the point is this is a tool that a lot of non-U2 guys
know, and we ought to know it too.

I was pointing out eclipse gives the ability to run a tool on windows and
linux. The alternative is that Rocket built a tool that only runs on windows.
Whilst I am not particularly fond of eclipse I understand the reasoning for it.

Similar reason why Doug uses it as a base for his tools. Eclipse comes from
IBM
and has a number of third party development tools that can interface with that
environment. For U2 Developers, they have access to a free tool, the same for
web developer, restful services, etc. Other environments may have attracted a
charge for the base tools the environment is built.

Whilst it is easy to knock a solution, the key is to provide a better
alternative and at this stage I have not seen a better alternative for Rocket
to
base its tools on.

Eclipse is a pain, but at the moment it provides a base that works for windows
and linux offerings. It is a standard base for Rocket tools including datavu,
webservices, restful servives, EDA, etc.

I support David's comments that rather than putting down products, we need to
work with Rocket in how to improve the products. There are many opportunities
for test tools and other development tools to be integrated with BDT that could
help developers productivity. However Rocket will not invest in this product
if
we constantly put it down.

It is also something as developers should look at how they manage source code.

Maybe the source code that is to be edited should be taken out of a library and
stored in a development spot which would have a local directory.

Whilst there is still work to go on BDT, it is an evolving product and
something
that makes U2 look more professional something that the community has had to
battle with in the eyes of management and consultants

Re: [U2] New U2 BDT

2012-03-11 Thread David Jordan
Will
I was pointing out eclipse gives the ability to run a tool on windows and
linux. The alternative is that Rocket built a tool that only runs on windows.
Whilst I am not particularly fond of eclipse I understand the reasoning for it.
Similar reason why Doug uses it as a base for his tools. Eclipse comes from
IBM and has a number of third party development tools that can interface with
that environment. For U2 Developers, they have access to a free tool, the same
for web developer, restful services, etc. Other environments may have
attracted a charge for the base tools the environment is built.

Whilst it is easy to knock a solution, the key is to provide a better
alternative and at this stage I have not seen a better alternative for Rocket
to base its tools on.

Re: [U2] New U2 BDT

2012-03-10 Thread David Wolverton
You should at least raise a case to Rocket about this -- they fix problems
based on issues from customers --But to my knowledge, they NEVER address
'forum based' issues as they don't have an 'eCase number'!

Once you've raised the case and gotten an eCase number, post that
information so that other similarly situated can ALSO log a case and refer
to YOUR eCase -- the more people that have the same issue, the sooner and
more likely it gets addressed. People trying, giving up and then skulking
back into darkness has the side effect of leaving the issue broken with
Rocket possibly not aware of the impact of the break-- Unreported issues do
not help raise the quality level...

I've never felt that U2 ignored issues that rendered the product 'unusable'
- those are usually pretty high up the list -- especially a high-profile
tool like BDT -- they've been trumpeting that thing. NOW -- they may
'document' the shortcoming -- but at that point, it becomes the 'omission of
a feature -- not a bug' Heheh

SO, for the good of humanity (at least, the U2 subset of humanity) -- log
this as an issue before you move back to WED -- and everyone else similarly
situated, do the same.

(off box... back to work)

Hi Bill:

BDT uses UOJ for connection which does not support environmental variables.
You would have to shell out to get them and convert the files manually. I
looked in the manuals and did not find an alternative.

BDT does not have a keep alive. The default for a UOJ session is an hour.
If you do not do anything in that hour you have to reconnect again. BDT's
advance settings do not allow you to change the default even though UOJ
supports changing this parameter.

the message:

"Could not get contents of directory "E:\UDAccounts\Dev\@ABO_SYS\**BP" on

Ok, the file link I'm accessing looks like:

7 Dev (0)-> AE VOC ABOBP

so the reference "@ABO_SYS" is a defined environment variable path. It
appears, therefore, that one cannot reference programs and data from links.
Secondly, there doesn't seem to be any timeout manager (or keepalive

I guess this alone makes use of this tool problematic for me. Can anyone
