[Bug 68537] Edgy Eft: GUI Firestarter wont start after adjustment sudoersfile

2006-10-27 Thread 323232
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firestarter

In a fully update edgy eft version:

With no adjustments in the Sudoers file firestarter works perfect.

[Bug 68535] No Launcher created in menu-bar

2006-10-27 Thread Dan Roberts
Public bug reported:

the rapid svn package does NOT create a launcher in the menu bar (in
gnome at least), thus forcing the user to create their own (not a
terrible thing, but not exactly to be desired) On top of that, that
means even if the user does know what the command for rapidsvn is
(fairly straight forward rapidsvn) they then have to hunt for the
icon, which luckily is in the standard /usr/share/pixmaps but i believe
that doing it this way prevents icon themes (like tango and such) from
replacing the icon for any launchers that are hand made. (I don't fully
understand the icon theming proccess, but i figure it involves some
symlinks somewhere that I don't know about)

cheers

[Bug 68540] issue with synaptic touchpad / xorg

2006-10-27 Thread JCB
Public bug reported:

I switched to Edgy and use exactly the same xorg.cong file as in Dapper.

The problem is that after a startup or an hibernate, it seems that
xorg.conf is ignored. The touchpad works, but not at the right speed and
I loose the scrolling function.

If I log off / log in, or if I switch to a virtual console and come back
to xorg (ALT-F1 and then ALT-F7), it works as it should : correct speed
and scrolling.

[Bug 52298] Re: kernel modules don't build with kernel 2.6.17-4

2006-10-27 Thread Björn Torkelsson
It is fixed in 1.4.2. Unfortunately it missed the release of 6.10.

Don't know if it is possible to get 1.4.2 in -updates?

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates?highlight=%28Updates%29

I have been running 1.4.2 (client) on Edgy since it was released and
haven't noticed any regression yet...

[Bug 68545] Behaves incorrectly with a custom vga=791 kernel parameter

2006-10-27 Thread Baishampayan Ghose
Public bug reported:

I like my virtual terminals in 1024x768 resolution and thus I have always used
`vga=791` as a kernel parameter to get 1024x768 at the virtual terminals.
This worked fine with Dapper but it breaks the splash screen in Edgy. The
splash looks totally off-center both horizontally and vertically.
I tried `vga=789` which is supposed to give me 800x600, but that breaks the
splash all the more. The splash screen becomes huge and the Ubuntu logo even
wraps around the screen.
This is IMHO a regression from the Dapper usplash and may be has something to
do with the recent re-engineering for Edgy.

[Bug 68548] Boots fails after upgrade to edgy if using generic or 686 kernel

2006-10-27 Thread eze80
Public bug reported:

I updated my system from dapper to edgy.

Now I can't boot my computer if I try to use the kernel I used in dapper
(2.6.15-27-686) or the newest generic kernel the system installed during
the update (2.6.17-10-generic).

I can, however, boot my system if I choose a 386 kernel (2.6.17-10-386).

The last error messages I get are (while running in recovery mode):

/etc/mdadm/mdadm.con: No such file or directory

But nothing happens. I can reboot my computer using ctrl-alt-del (the
system shutdowns normally)

2006-10-27 Thread Alvin Thompson
yup, same here. if you look at 'dmesg' output, it says, can not
initialize the device using windows driver. this worked fine in
Dapper, and still works in other distros (at least Suse). i had to
switch for the time being.

Re: [Bug 66896] Re: gnome-search-tool doesn't find text in ODF files

Sebastien Bacher schreef:
 Thanks for your bug. Apparently .odt is not a text format, that's not

Thanks for formulating the bug in another way. However, it's still a
bug. please reopen. As far as I'm concerned, .doc is not a text format
either and gnome-search-tool can still find the text in those documents.

What you're saying is that people who want to search for text in
documents shouldn't be using gnome-searchtool, or ODF. Well, then the
search tool shouldn't be pretending that it can find text in documents,
because it cannot. So maybe that feature should be removed from
gnome-search-tool, because it doesn't work for the people it is intended
for.

If a user is tech-savvy enough to know that ODF files are really
zipfiles containing xml, and that he should use zipgrep if he wants to
find text in a document, he wouldn't be using gnome-search-tool in the
first place.

One can't expect a user that uses gnome-search-tool to know the
technical intricacies of certain file formats. That's why we have
graphical applications, hiding those details. And if those applications
don't do what the user can reasonably expect, it's a bug.

[Bug 68556] [dapper edgy] Sound - Chipset ADI1981B

2006-10-27 Thread Ubitux
Public bug reported:

Hi

I had a lot of problems with this chipset. (ADI1981B)

On both (dapper+edgy) I have a strange problem : when the system is
installed, all seems to go ok ; even if I _reboot_ the computer, sound
goes ok. But if I _shutdown_ and then _restart_ my laptop the sound
looks very ugly : I have only a infernal whistle.

It's very strange that shutdown completely the system does it...

So I fix the problem adding : options snd-hda-intel index=0
single_cmd=1 model=laptop-eapd at the end of the file /etc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base

It works on dapper and edgy.

But when I installed Edgy, I had another problem : when I change the
volume with anything (keyboard shortcuts, software, ...) the sound is
cut ! I can't take it back even if I put the volume on his init value.

To fix this problem I use my old alsa-base (taken on dapper) and it
works well.

So, this was my old alsa-base (dapper) I actually use (You can see the
first fix at the end of the file) :

---
# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 modprobe snd-card-2
install sound-slot-3 modprobe snd-card-3
install sound-slot-4 modprobe snd-card-4
install sound-slot-5 modprobe snd-card-5
install sound-slot-6 modprobe snd-card-6
install sound-slot-7 modprobe snd-card-7

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above generic modules
install snd modprobe --ignore-install snd $CMDLINE_OPTS { modprobe -Qb
snd-ioctl32 ; : ; }
install snd-pcm modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm $CMDLINE_OPTS  { modprobe
-Qb snd-pcm-oss ; : ; }
install snd-mixer modprobe --ignore-install snd-mixer $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
modprobe -Qb snd-mixer-oss ; : ; }
install snd-seq modprobe --ignore-install snd-seq $CMDLINE_OPTS  { modprobe
-Qba snd-seq-midi snd-seq-oss ; : ; }

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above sound card driver modules
install snd-emu10k1 modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
modprobe -Qb snd-emu10k1-synth ; }
install snd-via82xx modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
modprobe -Qb snd-seq ; }

# Load saa7134-alsa instead of saa7134 (which gets dragged in by it anyway)
install saa7134 modprobe --ignore-install saa7134 $CMDLINE_OPTS  { modprobe
-Qb saa7134-alsa ; : ; }
# Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0
options snd-bt87x index=-2
options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2
#options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel index=0 single_cmd=1 model=laptop-eapd
---

And this was on Edgy (without patch) :
---
# autoloader aliases
install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2
install sound-slot-3 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-3
install sound-slot-4 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-4
install sound-slot-5 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-5
install sound-slot-6 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-6
install sound-slot-7 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-7

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above generic modules
install snd /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
/sbin/modprobe -Qb snd-ioctl32 ; : ; }
install snd-pcm /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
/sbin/modprobe -Qb snd-pcm-oss ; : ; }
install snd-mixer /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-mixer $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
/sbin/modprobe --Qb snd-mixer-oss ; : ; }
install snd-seq /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-seq $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
/sbin/modprobe -Qb snd-seq-midi ; /sbin/modprobe --quiet snd-seq-oss ; : ; }

# Cause optional modules to be loaded above sound card driver modules
install snd-emu10k1 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-emu10k1 $CMDLINE_OPTS
 { /sbin/modprobe -Qb snd-emu10k1-synth ; }
install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx $CMDLINE_OPTS
 { /sbin/modprobe -Qb snd-seq ; }

# Load saa7134-alsa instead of saa7134 (which gets dragged in by it anyway)
install saa7134 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install saa7134 $CMDLINE_OPTS  {
/sbin/modprobe -Qb saa7134-alsa ; : ; }
# Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0
options snd-bt87x index=-2
options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
options snd-intel8x0m index=-2
options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2
options snd-usb-audio index=-2
options snd-usb-usx2y index=-2
---

So finally it works with the patched alsa-base of dapper. But I really
don't understand why a simple reboot doesn't do anything and a
shutdown+restart kill the driver :s

It's one of the most incomprehensible bug I ever seen... have you got an
explication ?

[Bug 68555] version upgrade needed to 8.4.14

2006-10-27 Thread Tony Austin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tk8.4

Versions for tcl and tk in Ubuntu 6.06 are 8.4.12, latest version is
8.4.14.

Trying to run Ruby with tk interface and get the following error, which
prevents tk being used at all:-

irb(main):001:0 require 'tk'
RuntimeError: tcltklib: fail to Tk_Init(). this isn't a Tk
applicationunknown color name Black
from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/tk.rb:1102:in `initialize'
from /usr/lib/ruby/1.8/tk.rb:1102
from (irb):1
irb(main):002:0

Advice from the tcl/tk team is as follows:-

I know nothing about Ruby, but that Tk message usually means you've
upgraded your X server to one that doesn't understand standard color
names. As I recall, Xorg was a common offender?

If you install a recent enough version of Tk, it includes a workaround
for these broken X servers.

Do you have 8.4.14 ? That's the latest.

First to contain the workaround was 8.4.13, I think.

Re: [Bug 68275] Re: Optical Microsoft USB Mouse not recognized in installed Edgy

2006-10-27 Thread wolfchri
Hello Vassilis,

yesterday, it happened again once after rebooting. Absolutely strange,
because I rebooted several times before and after that without problems into
Edgy. So there is still a problem with the Microsoft Optical USB Mouse, but
I can not reproduce it reliably.

My guess is that is is less a kernel module problem but more a problem with
upstart/udev/udev/xorg. It did not occur during the early testing stage of
Edgy.

Since it occurs not often, it is not severe, but I do not like such problems
that can not really reproduced but do exist

I also have a similar problem with this hardware:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Abit AB9
1xIDE DVD RW - Slave
1X80GB Maxtor IDE Hard Drive - Master
2X SATA 2 Western Digital Hard Drives

At first I could not even load the Final Release Edgy LiveCD as I kept
getting Error loading boot CD errors which then told me to reboot, or
it would get stuck at 8% while loading the Kernel. After reading around
on ubuntuforums.org I read about disabling things like USB, so I did
this and then I could boot the LiveCD. I managed to install Edgy
perfectly with no problems.

However, when I was told to restart my PC did not restart correctly - it
ejected my CD which is normal, but then it didn't shutdown. It just hung
there with a little bit of the progress bar left with no hard drive
activity at all. I had to do a hard restart in the end.

After I did the hard restart, GRUB loads fine but I do see some errors
flash quickly on the page which appears after, they go too fast for me
to see but they look very similar to the ones in the first post of this
bug report. I then get shown usplash with the smallest bit of progress
bar showing, but nothing loads and there is no hard drive activity.

Re: [Bug 32529] Re: Installer corrupting partition table

2006-10-27 Thread steve.horlsey
If end is last-used rather than first-free, then so do partitions 7 and
8.

I think the table had been manually edited with cfdisk to create those
partitions, and then Linux installed into the existing partitions, but I'm
not certain - it's been a long time.

This doesn't necessarily mean that the partitions actually overlap though,
it just means that the partitions don't start and end on a cylinder
boundary. I think this is what the + symbol means. They may well end halfway
through a cylinder and the next one start on the following sector, still in
the middle of the same cylinder. To know exactly, you need the detailed
partition table rather than this summary printout. Is anyone interested in
the 512 byte bootsector images of before and after if I can still find them?

On 27/10/06, Rolf Leggewie [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Almost same here, upgrade from dapper to edgy, Matrox G400. But I didn't
see that lightening up, although it's possible I just missed it (only
have seen 1 boot of edgy :-))

[Bug 68519] Re: Upgrade from Dapper to Edgy failed

2006-10-27 Thread Patrick Fey
I moved the contents of the directory to another temporary directory and
rerun the upgrade script. A message came up, that said I should run sudo
apt-get install -f and then rerun the upgrade script again. I did this.
Half way through the upgrade, the x server was shut down and did not
come up again, complaining that the ati module was not found. I then did
a sudo dpkg --reconfigure -a. This finished the installation of the
other packages, but x still did not come up. I did a sudo apt-get
--purge remove xserver-xorg-video-all sudo apt-get install xserver-
xorg-video-all package and this did the trick. My system is running fine
with edgy now. Not something you would call a smooth upgrade path, but
at least it works. YMMV.

Thanks for your bugreport.

This bug shows under rare circumstances when dpkg sends unexpected error
lines. I will attach a debdiff with a fix and the fix will be uploaded
to the archive soon.

[Bug 68559] I can't install ubuntu into existing root partition. (I need to delete and re-create it)

2006-10-27 Thread veer
Public bug reported:

My computer already have GNU/Linux installed. There 2 partitions that
are /home and / (root). I want to install ubuntu-desktop 6.10 into my
computer by preserving /home. So I choose manually edit partition table
and assign mount point of each partition (surely, I assign /dev/hda4 as
root). But the installer report me that No root file system

[Bug 63680] Re: dapper - edgy dist-upgrade holds back essential packages

2006-10-27 Thread Risto H. Kurppa
So is there a solution for this available? Using KDE, updated via
changing sources.list and update dist-upgrade several times and hpijs
won't install. All other packages are ok.

In the end I was able to sudo apt-get install hpijs and after this
upgrade was ok.

Too bad if command line dist-upgrade fails, would be nice to have it
working (For example KDE doesn't have a graphical upgrade tool - does
it?)
