I have this problem... I'm not using Wine.
The main thing I notice when this happens (only in FF for me) is that
one of my dual core CPUs runs at 100%, the other drops to about 5%. Both
cores can run at 100%, it seems random.

I suffer from both problems. The latter is most well documented so I

If I understand correctly, Hardy and below do not have the DKMS
capability made by Dell. Intrepid offers this (2.6.27) but clearly you
shouldn't have upgrade to 8.10 to use VB. I only offer this as an
option.

I had a similar problem, so booted with a live CD then copied the
xorg.conf file the live session was running over the xorg.conf on my
main system.
Next time I booted, X started fine... it did mess with the driver
though, so now my machine doesn't know what driver I'm using.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
to return the xorg.conf to its original settings. It will make a backup
of the xorg.conf file so you can return to the current state if
something goes wrong.

When libdvdcss2 is not installed, I 'open' the DVD 'with' VLC
(0.9.4-1ubuntu3). This opens VLC: the VLC window displays 'cdrom0' then
this black screen stops after a second but

I can create DVDs, play music etc and read files from DVD, but when I
try to play a film, there is no picture and the audio is very jumpy and
crashes the player.
I have tried this in VLC, MPlayer and Totem. MPlayer gives the least
jumpy audio, but it's still not great and there's again
I installed and removed via the Synaptic gui.
I can't remember exactly what I did, but usually I perform a complete
removal, especially when in this case there are no other dependencies.

I tried running:
$ openoffice
The application cannot be started
The component manager is not available
$ echo JAVA_HOME
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.5.0-sun
but I downloaded this version of Java... is there a problem with the
default ubuntu java?

system-cleaner not installed on clean install

Binary package hint: system-cleaner
Intrepid install disc created from a daily build roughly on the 10th has
no system-cleaner package installed by default.
On updating everyday, system-cleaner has still not been added and had to
be added manually.
Has this now been fixed?
Sorry to bring this up again, but I've just upgraded to Intrepid and
it's doing it again.
I have a Quadro FX 500/600 nVidia card
The driver that fixes this bug was released on 7th Oct 2008 (version
177). This, however is not available from the repos yet.
This is the changelog for version 177
I would agree that this is the best thing to do

I was in a computer shop earlier, we were discussing Windows (the guy
that worked there was saying how much he liked M$)... he then said (with
no prompting) something to the line of I think people will start using
