Acting on mvo's prompting, I checked in ccsm, and the Gnome
Compatibility plugin was *not* enabled.
Enabling it fixed Alt+F1 and Alt+F2, but not Alt+F6.
Additionally, the problem remains that this "fix" of processing these in
a compiz plugin with its own keybinding settings means that the setting
w.r.t. Alt+F6 not working, that turned out to be that the gnomecompat
plugin seems to default the "Open Terminal" keybinding to disabled -
manually configuring that keybinding restored that functionality.

I don't understand the rationale expressed in bug 339818. If you were to
carry that to its logical conclusion, you'd have to remove the handle

Opened l-b-m-2.6.28 task.
In brief, the problem (for me, using the ath5k driver, on an Acer Aspire
One) is that whilst the standard Jaunty kernel properly detects UK
hardware and enables the non-US channels, the linux-backports-modules
variant of the wireless modules go into the US regulatory doma

An alternative way to do it would be to simply remove the
"str.__init__(self, str_)" line. That would be a slightly more minimal
change, but your complete conversion to use __new__ is probably more
technically correct, though both should accomplish exactly the same
