[Bug 1725955] Re: "Printer added" notification

[Bug 1724317] Re: Shutdown hangs / no standby - possible Wifi-bug in the kernel
For me everything's fine after yesterday's kernel update. Shutdown and suspend work as expected. So this bug seems to have been fixed indeed, for the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 chip at least. The current kernel (4.13.0-17-generic #20-Ubuntu SMP Mon Nov 6 10:04:08) appears to be unchanged from the one I previously tried to install from proposed, so I guess the boot problems that I encountered where due to some mistake of my own. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1724317 Title: Shutdown hangs / no standby - possible Wifi-bug in the kernel To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1724317/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@gernophil: If by a "new kernel release" you mean Linux 4.14, you won't see that in artful. That's not how kernel updates are done in Ubuntu. For more details see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/FAQ. Back to the bug in question. I have an Acer Aspire E5-573 32DN laptop with a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless adapter that suffers from the symptoms described in here. It runs fine with the 4.13.10-041310 mainline kernel, as suggested above. I also tried the kernel packages from -proposed (4.13.0-17.20) but those wouldn't even boot right. [Bug 1103833] Re: Wine's icon and description appears for all Windows applications
Sorry, I forgot to mention that for my workaround (see previous comment) to function you need shortcut.exe from http://optimumx.com/downloads.html#Shortcut somewhere in your Wine path (like windows/system32). This little tool allows you to create, modify or query Windows shell links (shortcuts) from the command-line. [Bug 1103833] Re: Wine's icon and description appears for all Windows applications
So according to the lastet comments adding a StartupWMClass corresponding to the name of the application's executable to each Wine .desktop file would be a temporary workaround for this problem, until it's fixed in Wine? Let's try it: find $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs -name '*.desktop' -exec perl -pi -e 'if (m/^Exec=.+ \/Unix (.+\.lnk)/) { ($l = $1) =~ s/ / /g; $r = qx[env WINEDEBUG=-all wine shortcut /f:$l /a:q]; if ($r =~ m/\nTargetPath=(?:.+\\)?([^\\\n]+)/) { print StartupWMClass=$1\n; } }' '{}' \; And hey, it works! Mostly, that is, for me. A few exceptions turned out to be due to to EITHER differences in capitalization between what's in the .lnk file and the actual exectutable on disk OR some internal shenanigans by program loaders/cracks. Try this workarond at your own risk. Be sure to backup ~/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs beforehand. You may have to run xdg-desktop-menu forceupdate to see any changes. YMMV. To revert the changes, i.e. to remove all StartupWMClass lines from all Wine .desktop files: find $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine/Programs -name '*.desktop' -exec perl -pi -e 's/StartupWMClass=.+\n//' '{}' \; This workaround (or a permanent fix) also seems to fix https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/704187. [Bug 1255469] Re: Problem reading or parsing sonic-visualiser .desktop files
I've been getting these errors too, and not just in trusty. The two files concerned are part of the app-install-data package, and that's where this bug belongs in my view. It seems they are generated for the Ubuntu Software Center from the application's .desktop files, which have been faulty for a while and remain unfixed (see associated upstream bug). These errors should become apparent during the conversion process, i.e. when building the app-install-data package, and not on the user's system where they cause nothing but confusion. So my suggestion is to validate all generated .desktop files early on when building the app-install-data package and to throw out those that don't pass muster. RussianNeuroMancer, I beg to differ. GetDeb offering a RubyRipper package does not fix this. [Bug 327311] Re: Keyboard very slow after resume with Macbook 4.1
I also have a MacBook 4,1, currently running Lucid amd64, and I'm experiencing this bug too. In fact, it's been happening ever since Hardy, sometimes very frequently, sometimes only rarely, and always in a very unpredictable manner. On my machine it's primarily the touchpad that tends to be sluggish after resuming from suspend, less so the keyboard (or perhaps I'm just using the touchpad more than the original submitter). I have a looming suspicion (but I can't prove for sure) that the probability of a sluggish touchpad increases when an external USB device (like a hard disk or an mp3 player) had been connected earlier during the same session but wasn't any longer when going into suspend mode. Also, in earlier Ubuntu releases (before plymouth), there were sometimes text mode messages about interrupts not having been cared about while resuming. Whenever one of those appeared the touchpad and/or keyboard was certain to be unuseable. I'd be happy to help resolve this bug. I don't have 50 euros to spare (blame it on the MacBook), but feel free to ask for log files, modprobing, lspci output, whatever. -- Keyboard very slow after resume with Macbook 4.1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/327311 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 438868] Re: Address bar autocomplete and search bar autocomplete doesn't always work after emerging from a screensaver or suspend
Compiz is very likely a factor here. Following diego's advice, I switched the window manager to Metacity (using Compiz Fusion Icon), restarted Firefox, checked if the awesomebar was working (it was, no surprise here), suspended, resumed and immediately tried the awesomebar again. It was still working! Then I re-enabled Compiz, went through another suspend-and-resume cycle, and the old behavior (no suggestions coming up) was back. Another thing that may or may not be relevant here: I have two portable computers, an Atom netbook running i386 Ubuntu and a Core 2 Duo notebook running the amd64 version. My home directories, including Firefox profiles as well as all dot files and directories, are the same on both machines and get synchronized periodically. On the 32-bit netbook I get the awesomebar issue each and every time after suspending with Firefox running, whereas on the 64-bit notebook I have never ever encountered it. That's the current situation with Lucid, and it was the same with Karmic. The two machines have, of course, vastly different hardware, but the selection of manually installed packages is very similiar. -- Address bar autocomplete and search bar autocomplete doesn't always work after emerging from a screensaver or suspend https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438868 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 438868] Re: Address bar autocomplete and search bar autocomplete doesn't always work after emerging from a screensaver or suspend
Me too! Another workaround is to open a new Firefox window (Ctrl+N) after resuming from suspend, optionally closing the previous one with the non-functioning awesomebar. I'm currently testing a pre-release built of VLC 1.1 from ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8, and it does the right thing: A subtitle font (as opposed to a mere font file) can be chosen, and the setting actually works. [Bug 563276] Re: No way to tweak multi-finger tap reaction
After the kernel package update to 2.6.32-21 I was much annoyed to find that the multi-finger tap-clicking behavior on my MacBook 4,1 had changed (to right-clicking with three fingers, middle-clicking with two, had been the other way round all the time). I updated gnome-settings- demon to the one from Yuri Khan's PPA, adapted the relevant new gconf keys, and got the old behavior back. Thanks a lot, Yuri! I've had this problem in Lucid for about a week now. It started sometime during the updates to Gnome 2.30. It's exactly what other people are experiencing too: selected pointer theme is not honored when Compiz is active and the cursor is over any GTK window. Definitely a bug. [Bug 488612] Re: Nautilus Actions don't show up in Nautilus right-click menu as they do on Karmic
As soon as I find the time and patience I'll file a couple of bug reports for those other issues that I stumpled upon in the config tool. For now I just want my Nautilus Actions back. I really miss them, they used to make life so much easier! For starters and just to give a few examples (admittedly off-topic), the developer may want to have a closer look at the export assistant's general usability. The initial dialog (This assistant will guide you ...) is unnecessary. I found the custom Selecting the target folder dialog quite confusing with all those panes and boxes. Something a little closer to established standards would be preferable. The following dialog, Selecting the export format, will overwhelm any user who is not deep into gconf internals. With a little playing around or, even better, looking an average user over the shoulder while actually using the export assistant it could be improved a lot. Another minor issue that irritated me was that, on the Folders tab for an action, there is by default a / (root directory) item which, when removed, can't be added again to the list. When I click the Plus button, I can select File system to add a file:/// folder (which may or may not be the same thing as / in this context). If, on the other hand, I enter / as a string into the Location field of the Select a folder dialog and then click Open, an error message appears telling me that The folder could not be created because the file exists. Thankfully it does indeed. None of this, of course, has anything to do with the present bug report. None of this is, by itself, a big enough problem to justify its own bug report. Maybe if there was some kind of wishlist for Nautilus Actions, I'd simply add them to that. -- Nautilus Actions don't show up in Nautilus right-click menu as they do on Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/488612 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 488612] Re: Nautilus Actions don't show up in Nautilus right-click menu as they do on Karmic
Same thing here. Nautilus Actions worked just fine in Lucid (with a setup inherited from Karmic) until Monday's updates, then all the context menu items disappeared. Upon noticing this I zapped my Nautilus Actions configuration (by moving the entire ~/.gconf/apps/nautilus- actions branch to a safe place) and created a couple of new actions for testing purposes, throwing in a few killall nautilus commands and log- ins/log-outs in between, all to no avail. Whatever actions I define, they won't appear in the actual context menus in Nautilus. It seems that at the same time diff-ext (which allows comparing files in meld via Nautilus' context menus) also stopped working. This may be an indication that the breakage is due to some recent change in the way Nautilus integrates context menu items from third-party apps. OTOH the Nautilus Actions Configuration tool, which wouldn't even start in Lucid until Monday, is now mostly working, albeit with lots of minor and not-so-minor bugs, the worst being that the export assistant doesn't actually export anything. -- Nautilus Actions don't show up in Nautilus right-click menu as they do on Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/488612 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When the error message came, I chose Yes to display the partitioning scheme already created by the installer. Here I changed the type of the swap partition from swap to do not use. I've been test-driving the Lucid kernel on my Lenovo for the past couple of weeks now, suspending and resuming it at different intervals ranging from a few hours to several days. I haven't been doing much else with it, so my results are to be taken with a grain of salt. There were a few issues not related to power management (e.g., built-in WLAN not working at all, USB WLAN working only with unencrypted networks, display suddenly turning all black or yellow a couple of times). That said, suspend worked quite well,. Resume failed only once in the way described above (device powering down rather than coming back on again), which may or may not have been due to unrelated reasons (like myself having shut down the machine by accident, which I'm pretty sure I didn't but cannot rule out entirely). [Bug 351706] Re: [Apple Inc. MacBook4, 1] checkbox suspend_test fails with read-only filesystem errors
My MacBook 4,1 is currently running Karmic 9.10 amd64 and is still having various issues with suspend: 1) Resuming from suspend takes rather long, with a blank screen being shown for at least 15 to 20 seconds before the password entry box appears. This is probably due to KMS being disabled per boot option on this machine, which in turn is necessary to allow the display brightness to be controlled at all. This is a known bug and will supposedly be fixed in kernel version 2.6.32. 2) More often than not, the touchpad reacts very sluggishly after a resume from suspend, so much so that it becomes unuseable. Only a reboot will fix this. This seems to be correlated to an error message that appears in text mode while the machine is resuming, saying something about an interrupt that nobody cared about. It seems that whenever this message comes up (which is visible only for a split second) the touchpad won't work, and vice versa. I haven't been able to establish any factors that make this behavior more or less likely, like suspending by closing the lid vs. using the GUI option, or plugging, unplugging and/or replugging the mains adaptor during the suspend. It seems to occur more or less randomly, sometimes at each successive suspend and resume cycle, sometimes not at all for several days. 3) Very rarely, after resuming from suspend the display will be strewn with a pattern of block horizontal lines, each about one centimeter long. This used to happen more ofter with earlier versions of Ubuntu. Suspending and resuming once more usually fixes this. It's probably a graphics driver issue. 4) My MacBook has an international (non-US) keyboard with swapped keycodes 49 and 94. There are numerous bug reports on Launchpad about this not being properly supported in recent versions of Ubuntu. As a workaround, I'm using xmodmap to fix the misdetected keys at start up. After resuming from suspend, however, these xmodmap settings are lost, not always, but most of the time. All the above issues combined make suspend in Ubuntu kind of a game of luck on my computer. The chances of not having to reboot after resuming are currently under fifty percent at best. That's just not good enough, especially compared to how flawlessly suspend works with OS X on the exact same hardware. I'd be more than happy to assist in fixing these issues and to provide any required information. However I'm more of an end-user type than a developer, and I'm not quite sure where and how I should report these bugs. -- [Apple Inc. [Bug 351706] Re: [Apple Inc. MacBook4, 1] checkbox suspend_test fails with read-only filesystem errors
I'll give the Lucid kernel a try, but I'm not quite sure how to do this properly. Do I simply install the linux-headers and linux-image debs from your link and then select this kernel in grub? Are there any possible side-effects to be aware of? Maybe you can point me to some instructions about installing a pre-release kernel. Thanks! -- [Apple Inc. [Bug 351706] Re: [Apple Inc. MacBook4, 1] checkbox suspend_test fails with read-only filesystem errors
Okay, I've figured it out for myself. Things look indeed a whole lot better with the Lucic kernel, although some issues remain. I did more than a dozen suspend/resume cycles, with the odd reboot in between, switching between battery and mains operation etc. Resume was always very fast, a matter of a few seconds. I still had to disable KMS to be able to reduce the display brightness, but with the Lucid kernel this didn't affect resume times. The slow touchpad issue didn't come up during my tests, which is surely a good sign but doesn't prove anything yet. Nothing has changed about the keyboard issues described above in 4). If you want me to do some more testing, just give me a shout. Keeping the Lucid kernel on a permanent basis is out of the question for now as the kernel modules for my Broadcom WLAN and for VirtualBox won't compile with it and I need both on what is my main production machine. -- [Apple Inc. [Bug 426417] Re: broken menus at Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 with intel-2.8.1/2.9
I'm seeing the same problem as matangdilis, i.e. clicking on the Country dropdown in Location will freeze my display. I can still move the mouse pointer, but I can't click anything. Have to log in from another machine and reboot from the command line. Just restarting gmd won't do. The Country dropdown works fine on my other machine, which has an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) and where Stellarium doesn't need the workaround. So it seems these two issues are related after all. [Bug 426417] Re: broken menus at Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 with intel-2.8.1/2.9
The driconf workaround thankfully fixed my broken Stellarium menus and dialogs with an Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03). I created an application setting, using Stellarium as the appliation path and stellarium as the exectuable name (path not needed, no shell script here). Unfortuntely, in driconf's Application Settings window, the Cancel and OK buttons are in the wrong positions, which made me click the wrong one and lose my newly entered settings the first time round. I guess this deviation from the HIG should be reported as a defect in driconf. In fact, the dialog shouldn't have OK and Cancel buttons at all, it should have a single Close button like most other GTK dialogs. -- broken menus at Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 with intel-2.8.1/2.9 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/426417 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 319575] Re: multiload-applet + sshfs breaks suspend
The bug remains unfixed in Karmic with Gnome 2.29.1. I stumbled on this bug report (excellent work from Bogdan, btw) after I had, for the umpteenth time, lost suspend on my MacBook 4,1 with Ubuntu. It is indeed the combination of the disk load monitor with an active sshfs mount that blocks the multiload-applet task and causes any suspend attempt to fail. It wasn't easy to figure this out, with truncated multiload-apple [sic] strings in my log files being one of the major hurdles. Bogdan, would you please go the trouble of reporting this on Gnome's bugzilla? We really need to take the detective work out of a functioning suspend/hibernate. This is still an issue in Karmic (RC). On my Lenovo S10e I'm still getting errors when copying large files to my Jaunty fileserver via the machine's LAN interface using SSH(FS). Fortunately the workaround suggested by burianek on 2009-08-19 helps in Karmic too. (BTW, a restart is not required after creating the script in /etc/network/if-up.d/; simply re-plugging the network cable will do.) -- Large file transfer gives error: Corrupted MAC on input https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/60764 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 380077] Re: vlc ignores subtitle font setting
I confirm this for VLC 1.0.1, Karmic Alpha 5. I saw this bug already in Jaunty with VLC 1.0/1.0.1 from Kow's PPA. There used to be bug report about this in Videolan's tracker (http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/2550), but this has been down for quite a while now (the whole tracker, not just this bug report). No matter which font file is specified in the Subtitles On Screen Display Settings dialog (in Simple mode preferences), Display Settings sections, Font input box, VLC always uses the same default font, probably DejaVu Sans, for external text subtitles. The selected font is, however, used for other on-screen elements, just as described by the original submitter. Apart from this, the font selection in VLC should be by font family via a system font dialog/font list and not by file name at all. This would more consistent with VLC's support for formatted subtitles. ** Bug watch added: VLC Trac #2550 http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/2550 -- vlc ignores subtitle font setting https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380077 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 231679] Re: Have to restart firefox to view flash content
I first encountered this problem back in Hardy (amd64 then and ever since), and I still got bitten by it in Karmic Alpha 5 time and again. Flash is bad enough as it is, but with this erratic behavior nuisance becomes sheer torture. My guess is that nspluginwrapper is the culprit here. The Flashblock add-on (oblig. IMHO) might be another suspect, altough that doesn't seem very probable to me. Anyway, installing the native 64-bit version of the Flash plug-in seems to have fixed this issue for me. Officially it's still in alpha, but so far I've had no problems with it at all (apart from Flash still being Flash and the plug-in still being non-free software, but that's a different matter). [Bug 363619] Re: Language-support-extra-de breaks OpenOffice spell checker in Jaunty
Arne, here is random snippet of German text (taken from Pschyrembel's medical dictionary) that you can use to test the spellchecker: Zur Erforschung des komplizierten Fortpflanzungszyklus seltener Steinlausarten wird experimentell versucht, diese durch Klonierung zu vermehren sowie deren Genom in einer Genbibliothek der Nachwelt zu hinterlassen. When I spell-check this sentence with the language set to Germany (Germany) in OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 on Karmic Alpha 5/amd64, with hunspell-de-med NOT installed, Steinlausarten and Klonierung are the only words that are flagged as unknown. On the other hand, when hunspell-de-med IS installed, each and every word single word is shown as not in the dictionary, including for example des (a genitive singular form of the definite article, which must be among the ten or twenty most common words of the language). The suggestions listed are always medical or medical-sounding terms, like Dermis and Delir in the case of des. [Bug 363619] Re: Language-support-extra-de breaks OpenOffice spell checker in Jaunty
It has been fixed already. That's great news, thank you very much! Any steps to reproduce this? I did a fresh install of Karmic Alpha 5 (amd64, alternate installer), chosing en_DK as my default language as usual, then added language support for German as well as lots of other packages. Of course I kept my entire home directory from my previous Jaunty install, including hidden directories. And then, when I ran a spell-check in OpenOffice.org, I found that only medical terms where recognized, just like half a year ago in Jaunty. I can't tell you anything more specific then that, sorry. Anyway, I removed hunspell-de-med, which in turn removed language- support-de-extra, and everything is fine again. -- Language-support-extra-de breaks OpenOffice spell checker in Jaunty https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 363619] Re: Language-support-extra-de breaks OpenOffice spell checker in Jaunty
Confirmed for Karmic Alpha 5, and I also had this bug in Jaunty (both with en_DK as the default locale plus German language support). This needs to be fixed really urgently before Karmic is released, otherwise German-speaking users will be left without a working spell- checker in OpenOffice.org for yet another Ubuntu release cycle. Because that's just what this bug means: With hunspell-de-med installed, each and every non-medial term in any document will be marked as a spelling error.
