Ubuntu 14.04 reboots when booting from USB

#5 STOP WORKING after a sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade.
Bluetooth is working but, who cares when you cannot get a sound out of
your laptop?

(either directly from the usb or by loading grub off the internal disk drive).

This is Ubuntu 9.10 here. I always install latest updates with update
manager.
ecryptfsd -V
ecryptfsd (ecryptfs-utils) 81
The directory tree under mount | grep ecryptfs does not have any zero
size files.
I cleared dmesg before logging in.
dmesg | grep eCrypt
[ 3537.369696] Valid eCryptfs
I found the file that caused these messages.
cat ~/.cache/desktop-couch/desktop-couchdb.pid
cat: desktop-couchdb.pid: Input/output error
This was the second time that this file got corrupted. It is a coincidence?
It cause couchdb not to start. I removed the pid file.

I did test the connection thru SSH and it worked successfully with the option
set to lo. Here is what I did:
1. Configure vino to only use localhost interface, as detailed in #15.
2. Connect from a host with public IP address (a.b.e.f) to vino server on
remote host (a.b.c.d).

synaptic (mark all updates - smart upgrade), I didn't immediately reboot

that contains encrypted root and swap logical volumes. On some machines
the USB drive appears later than initramfs:/scripts/local-top/cryptroot
