[Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
The bug showed up again today. The whole system has started to crash consistently whenever I try to start up Firefox or Thunderbird. Yet it worked well all day, for about eight hours steady. And I was using Firefox frequently during the day. I also used Thunderbird this morning. It is difficult to remember what I did just before it started to crash again, but I think I did the following: loaded the font viewer program, uninstalled Abiword, downloaded the Xubuntu restricted extras, installed a few fonts with the font viewer, and edited some files in both LibreOffice and gedit. I doubt if any of these things could cause it to start crashing again. But something did. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1176062 Title: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1176062/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
Hi. Yesterday, I completely erased the entire system and reinstalled 13.04 from scratch, since the other reinstalation did not work well. Now the system configuration is: Gnome 3.6.3 Kernel 3.8.0-29-generic (#42-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 13 19:40:39 UTC 2013) GCC Version 4.7 (x86_64-linux-gnu) XOrg Version 1.13.3 (17 April 2013 10:43:13PM) Display Driver Nouveau So far there are no system crashes, no matter what I do (whether I switch from Thunderbird to Firefox, or vice versa, or run both at the same time, etc.). Also, the monitor is now displaying at the proper resolution again (1280x1024). However, I am still having a problem with Bibletime. None of the text from any of the books will display in the text boxes. The text seems to be there, but is not displaying. I will contact the Bibletime web site and work on that problem later. Thanks, Greg. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1176062 Title: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1176062/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
I changed from the nouveau to the nvidia drivers and, so far, it seems more stable. I have not been able to cause my system to crash yet. After more testing I will get back to you. The drivers I am using are called nvidia-304, tested and nvidia-304-upgrades. I have not tried the other available nvidia driver yet. However, when I began to use the nvidia driver, it reduced the resolution on my monitor. Also, the display no longer fills the whole screen. About 3/4 is left blank at the right side of the monitor. Also, the settings manager does not provide any option for any higher resolution, only the options of two lower resolutions, although the monitor is capable of displaying at a higher resolution. The nouveau driver displayed the text and pictures better, at a higher resolution, and filled the whole screen properly. [Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
I don't think I can get you the information you want, because I had to change the system. So that information likely would no longer exist. It all started when I tried the nvidia-173 driver. After rebooting, it just came up with a blank, black screen. So, to get the system running at all, I had to download and install the original 13.04 Xubuntu, then reload many of my programs, and begin all over again. Now I am back with the nouveau driver. However, I still cannot get my monitor to display in its normal 1280x1024 mode. It now only allows a maximum resolution of 1024x768. So I am going to try to get a driver for my monitor and install it, if I can, hoping that will help.

Hi. I tried to make sense of the documentation about doing a bisect, but I simply cannot understand it. So I think I will just avoid doing a bisect between Quantal and Raring, in order to identify the commit that caused this regression. Still, the system works well enough for now. And I have another computer that I can use to access e-mail and browse the Internet. So I will just leave the system as it is until a future update solves the problems. Hi. Sorry for the delay. Forgot about testing the 3.11 kernel. But I tested it today. Still crashing and requiring a cold boot. Tried loading Firefox from a link in Thunderbird, for example, and system crashed. [Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
Hi. The output from the terminal command you gave me is: 1801 06/08/2010 The old BIOS version was 0704 and its build date was 05/19/09. After updating the BIOS, I shut down the system and rebooted. Then I tried to run Thunderbird and the system crashed. After a cold boot, I tried to run Thunderbird again, and this time it ran. Then I was also able to load Firefox from a link in Thunderbird, which the system would do sometimes with the old BIOS, but rarely. Right now it is hard to say whether or not updating the BIOS helped at all, but it does not look like it solved the problem entirely since Thunderbird crashed as soon as I tried to load it after the new BIOS was installed.
By the way, I thought I should mention that I have two hard drives on my computer, one with Windows XP and another with Xubuntu. So I can choose which system I want to boot up from the grub menu. Today I booted up XP and installed Thunderbird. I already had Firefox on the XP system. Both Thunderbird and Firefox worked well on the XP system. I could not crash the Microsoft XP operating system by switching from one to the other. This really does not prove much, since these are different versions of Thunderbird and Firefox, made for the Microsoft operating systems. Still, it makes me think that my problem with system crashes in Xubuntu cannot related to hardware problems with my online graphics card.

[Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: When starting up either Firefox or Thunderbird, the system freezes. First the cursor usually freezes and no input is possible, but the desktop display remains, sometimes for a few seconds. Then a pattern of horizontal bars appears on the screen. The bars are about two or three inches wide and about an eighth of an inch high, in various shades of color or black and white. Each thin horizontal bar looks like it is a sliver copied from the display picture that existed on the screen before the crash. System almost always crashes when I click on an e-mail link in Thunderbird, as soon as the system attempts to start up the Firefox browser. System frequently crashes if I attempt to start up either Firefox or Thunderbird after I have previously run the other application. So, if I run Thunderbird and close it, then try to run Firefox, a crash occurs. Or if I run Firefox and close it, then try to run Thunderbird, I get a crash. System occasionally crashes the first time I try to run either Firefox or Thunderbird, even when I have never opened either application previously during the session. Basically, I can only use either Firefox or Thunderbird once, or sometimes twice, per session, before the system freezes and requires a cold boot. However, the system sometimes crashes without opening Firefox/Thunderbird, please see comment 7 for more details. System crashed after leaving it for a few hours. The screen saver blanked out the screen by that time, I move the cursor, the application I had been using appeared briefly (it was a Sudoko game I had been playing a few hours earlier), then the lines appeared in its place and the system froze. Pressing Alt+SysRq+1 followed by Alt+SysRq+t does nothing. It is a total system freeze and requires a cold boot. Problem began after installing upgrade to Ubuntu 13.04 (raring). [Bug 1176062] Re: System usually crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
Re: Comment #14 Hi. I followed the instructions for installing the latest upstream kernel for the AMD. The header and image files for AMD, as well as the header for all, were installed. Now sysinfo says the kernel is: 3.10.0-031000rc3-generic (#201305261935 SMP Sun May 26 23:35:53 UTC 2013) After testing the kernel, I tried to run Thunderbird, but it crashed the system and required a cold boot. I have crashed the system two or three times by running Thunderbird or Firefox. Now I was supposed to add the tag which says kernel-bug-exists- upstream according to your instructions. But I do not know how to do this. Where do I add this tag? By the way, I changed the status to Confirmed again, as instructed. [Bug 1176062] Re: System crashes when starting Firefox and/or Thunderbird
Reply to request for more info: The only changes to the system, since recent updates, is that the kernel is now 3.8.0-22 generic. By the way, the file manager is Thunar 1.6.2. As mentioned above, the crash is not always reproducible and seems to occur on an inconsistent basis. However, I can usually cause the operating system to crash by first running either Firefox or Thunderbird, then starting the other one of these two applications after the first one has run. Therefore, the system crash is mostly related to Firefox and Thunderbird, but the system sometimes crashes even when I have not opened either Firefox or Thunderbird at all during the whole session. [Bug 1176062] Re: 13.04 (raring) system crash with Firefox or Thunderbird
My system still crashes after I updated the kernel today, May 24, 2013. I have had three or four crashes, in about ten minutes, after installing the updates. Occasionally, I am asked to submit a crash report after I reboot, but rarely after the system crashes. *** About Crash Reports *** Some crash reports ask questions about the system, but those questions use technical terms which I do not understand. Each question may provide two or three options to select, but I can only guess at the answers, since I don't know what the questions mean. One time I guessed the answers, but I then thought that my answers might be wrong and misleading. So I stopped doing that. Now I just press the Cancel button when the crash report asks questions and this means that no crash report is sent at all. Yet I want to send a crash report, only I do not want to send a crash report with the wrong information. Surely the questions for the crash reports could provide an optional response such as: I do not know. Or the questions could provide a button which brings up a pop-up window that explains the technical terms and tells one how to find the answers to the questions being asked. Or, perhaps, a small script program could gather that information automatically and send it with the crash report. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1176062 Title: 13.04 (raring) system crash with Firefox or Thunderbird To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1176062/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1132479] Re: No text visible after recent updates in Raring
I have the same problem with the downloaded version in Xubuntu 13.04 (raring). Also, I cannot compile a version. The build shell scripts do not work. It says it finds CLucene, then it says it cannot find the library, etc. So there is no version of Bibletime available to use. And I really need Bibletime, since it is one of the most useful tools I have for my work. But, enough complaining. God bless the guys who created it! It has been extremely useful. I hope you can fix it soon. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1132479 Title: No text visible after recent updates in Raring To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bibletime/+bug/1132479/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 337801] Re: Paste function places buffer text in random places in document
Hi Jeremy. The problem I was having with gedit and Open Office has basically disappeared in recent versions of Ubuntu and with the computer I am now using. Since I started using this computer (even with Ubuntu 9.04) I do not think I have had any instances of the cut and paste function copying the buffer to random places in the text body, when I press the Ctrl-V key combination. Now I am running: Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic), Gnome 2.28.1, Kernel 2.6.31-20-generic, GCC version 4.4.1 (i486-linux-gnu) on a GenuineIntel, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz By the way, I work mostly in gedit because I write positional papers as HTML documents. And that was where I was getting most of random action from the cut and paste functions, although it also was occurring in the Open Office word processor. Thanks for the input. [Bug 337801] [NEW] Paste function places buffer text in random places in document
Public bug reported: Currently I am running the 8.04 (Hardy) release, version 2.22.3 (Ubuntu 2008-07-09), kernal 2.6.24-23-386 (#1 Sun Jan 25 23:32:00 UTC 2009), GCC version 4.2.4 (i486-linux-gnu). I have run a few versions of Ubuntu over the last 3 or 4 years on a Compaq Presario with 900 MHz AMD Duron(tm) Processor. And I have always had this problem while using the Ubuntu Text Editor, any other text editor, or any word processor. It has been on all versions, so I suspect it is hardware specific, but have not been able to test it on other computers. After I copy or cut some text into the buffer (using Ctrl-C or Ctrl-X), and after I move the cursor to the place in the document where I want to paste, then try to paste using Ctrl-V, nothing appears to happen. However, the paste function has indeed pasted the text as soon as I pressed Ctrl-V. The problem is that it has pasted all the buffer text into a randomly chosen location within the document. The randomly selected paste location is often fairly close to the place where I want to paste the text, and often a few paragraphs above. But it can also be absolutely anywhere else, above or below the place where the cursor is located. To find that randomly placed text, I can use the search function, or (better yet) press the undo function keys (Ctrl-Z). If I do not immediately remove the randomly placed text, it will remain in the document. Thus, many of my documents on the internet have been partially ruined, and contain some nonsense words, sentences and paragraphs. For example, if I was cutting and pasting the word existentialism, and somewhere else in the document there was the clause the dog bit the postman, then the paste function might randomly place the buffer right in the middle of another word like this: the dog bit the postmexistentialisman. Whenever I see nothing happen after pressing Ctrl-V, I know the paste Function has placed the buffer text into a randomly selected location somewhere else in the document. Of course, I cannot see where it has done this, since It will paste the text absolutely anywhere in the document, but leave the cursor exactly where I put it in the first place. But if nothing happens when I press Ctrl-V, I do not press Ctrl-V again. Instead, I press Ctrl-Z (undo). That will remove the buffer text which was randomly pasted somewhere in the document, then move my cursor to that particular spot. Of course, after this I need to return to where I was originally working. Since many of my documents are more than 50,000 words, trying to find the place where I was originally working in the document can be very time consuming and frustrating. One thing that sometimes helps is if I click and double-click about ten times on the spot where I want to paste something. When I do that, chances of successfully pasting the buffer text at the cursor's location are better, although still not certain. This bug is very frequent, occurring about half the time I use the cut and paste function. But now another similar problem has arisen. Before I updated to 8.04 (Hardy), the search function (Ctrl-F) would never randomly paste what was in the copy buffer into a randomly selected place in the document. However, I have seen the search function do this twice while I was using the Ubuntu Text Editor. I have not seen it do this more than twice, although it may have done so without my catching it. And I have not yet seen the search function do this in the Open Office word processor. But I have confirmed that it has done this in the Text Editor at least twice. I don't know if this problem can be fixed, except by getting a new computer, since I suspect that it might be a hardware problem. But if there is something I can do about it, I sure would appreciate some help. This bug has really caused some serious problems at times. Thanks.
