[Bug 1964541] Re: Cannot use Drag and Drop in gnome-shell 42 (Wayland session)

performance difference was noticeable last time I checked.

Plus, rendering of the entire Firefox window got blurry with fractional
scaling. (Just to add one more reason :-) )

Yes. And it works, too! Thank you :-)

Am I supposed to close the bug, or is there some QA process in place?

[Bug 1629770] Re: No "UI scaling" checkbox in display properties, no actual scaling in unity, nautilus, gnome apps

2016-10-03 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Just found a better set of settings:

- `gsettings set com.ubuntu.user-interface scale-factor "{'HDMI1': 8, 'eDP1':
8m 'eDP-1': 12}"`
- `gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 1.0`
- `gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-size 36`
- setting `layout.css.devPixelsPerPx` in Firefox about:config to 2.0

This fixes things visually, but the checkbox is still missing.

Also, this is effectively a time bomb, since there's no guarantee these
custom values would be nicely updated / keep working after the next
Ubuntu upgrade.

[Bug 1629770] [NEW] No "UI scaling" checkbox in display properties, no actual scaling in unity, nautilus, gnome apps

2016-10-03 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 16.04 to 16.10-something-after-final-beta the UI
scaling of desktop has gone and the relevant UI control is not found in
the Displays panel of System Settings.

I could work around some of the problems by:

- `gsettings set com.ubuntu.user-interface scale-factor "{'HDMI1': 8, 'eDP1':
12}"`
- `gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor 1.5`
- `gsettings org.gnome.desktop.interface cursor-size 36`
- setting `layout.css.devPixelsPerPx` in Firefox about:config to 2.0 (note it's
not consistent with 1.5 I use for everything else, it happened to Firefox one
or two versions back, and it's a separate issue)

These didn't fix the size of Unity panels and font sizes in window
titles.

2013-01-10 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
The bug basically prevents any further updates.

What I mean is after `configure` failure apt won't do anything useful at
all, keeping asking a user to run `dpkg --configure -a` which breaks on
the same memtest86+

I most probably see the same bug: the upgrade to memtest86+
4.20-1.1ubuntu2.1 hangs during configure. I could figure out it does
something in the postinst file but didn't dig deeper, just removed the
postinst and downgraded to the previous version. The bug basically
prevents any further updates.

[Bug 1054394] [NEW] Shotwell never finishes writing metadata

2012-09-21 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 0.12.9 to 0.13 shotwell starts rewriting metadata
on every launch, going through the progress with the ever-slowing pace
(i.e., each next % passes longer than the previous one). Upon reaching
99% it never completes the operation, I left it working through the
night on my 5526 photos.

I'm aware of the similarly looking #984553 that was fixed in 0.13 but I
started to see this behaviour only after upgrading so I thought it safer
to file a new bug.

[Bug 1030125] [NEW] Power Statistics UI comes up blank after having been closed with the window close button instead of the dedicated Close button in the UI

2012-07-27 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Use a laptop
2. From the battery indicator menu in the Unity top panel select the battery -
the Power Statistics window shows up looking normal with all the UI elements
visible and working.
3. Close the Power Statistics window with the system Close button in the top
left corner of the window title.
4. Open Power Statistics from the battery menu again - the window shows up
without any UI elements, just a plain gray background under the window title.

Notes:

- This does not happen when closed with the dedicated Close button in the
right bottom corner of Power Statistics UI
- The bug was actually present all the way since at least Precise alphas

[Bug 953783] Re: Alt+arrows keyboard shortcuts don't invoke Back and Forward navigation

2012-03-13 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Additional info.

It started to work again after some minutes. Perhaps it's related to a
crash that has happened somewhere in the HUD department. I understand
that I'm poking a black box here but I think this is related because HUD
is activated by Alt. May be it was catching it early somehow…

2012-03-09 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

All tracks purchased from Ubuntu One and stored under

of the symlink ~/.local/share/ubuntuone/Purchased from Ubuntu One
pointing to that directory.

Thanks for reminding of this. It is indeed fixed in Precise with upower

[Bug 879579] Re: Full screen mode of Firefox makes unity panel and dash inaccessible

2011-12-05 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Fullscreen means different things for different applications, and I'm
specifically concerned with Firefox. Or, if you want me to generalize,
with any application for which it makes sense to be a part of some
larger user workflow: office apps, photo editing apps etc. But certainly
not games which are indeed a perfect example of a single-task immersive
activity. Full screen mode doesn't define a use case by itself, it's an
implementation detail and it should be changed to correspond to behavior
patterns, not used as a base for them.

(Sorry if it sounds too succinct or even rude, nothing of it is
intended, I just have troubles formulating things in English sometimes)

[Bug 879579] [NEW] Full screen mode of Firefox makes unity panel and dash inaccessible

2011-10-21 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

After switching some apps (tried with Firefox and Terminal) into the
full screen mode by pressing F11 the Unity panel and dash are no longer
accessible:

- moving mouse to the left side of the screen doesn't reveal the panel
- bringing up the dash with the Super key draws it over the app but input focus
remains within the app: you can click links in Firefox through the panel

This looks somewhat like bug #708163 but that one is fixed so I decided
to open a new one.

[Bug 854404] Re: HP Envy 14 doesn't suspend by closing lid

2011-10-21 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Running the new kernel:

maniac@maniac-envy:~$ uname -a
Linux maniac-envy 3.1.0-030100rc10-generic #201110200610 SMP Thu Oct 20
10:11:32 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The behavior is the same.

I also looked into /var/log and it appears three files consistently have
new messages upon *opening* the lid, but nothing on closing:

auth.log:

Oct 21 11:18:24 maniac-envy su[3099]: Successful su for maniac by root
Oct 21 11:18:24 maniac-envy su[3099]: + ??? root:maniac
Oct 21 11:18:24 maniac-envy su[3099]: pam_unix(su:session): session opened for
user maniac by (uid=0)
Oct 21 11:18:25 maniac-envy su[3099]: pam_unix(su:session): session closed for
user maniac

syslog and kern.log:

Oct 21 11:18:24 maniac-envy kernel: [ 390.672734]
[drm:ironlake_update_pch_refclk] *ERROR* enabling SSC on PCH

Another small observation is that the screen itself switches off in the
closed state but it's probably a purely hardware switch…

[Bug 854404] Re: HP Envy 14 doesn't suspend by closing lid

2011-10-20 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
apport-collect attached this bunch of files. To reproduce the bug I
closed the lid, waited for about 10 seconds and when it didn't go to
sleep, opened the lid again and run apport-collect. I can also collect
the information after successful suspend from the menu if needed.

** Description changed:

Laptop doesn't suspend by closing lid. Choosing Suspend from the
settings menu (the thing in upper-right corner) does work and opening
lid does wake the machine up if suspended this way. The problem didn't
manifest itself right after the upgrade to 11.10 beta but appeared after
  some subsequent update.

[Bug 876070] Re: Backup cannot be restored on a fresh install

2011-10-17 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Oh, I think I have an idea why it's not working here. The fact that
deja-dup prompts me for administrative permission shows that it tries to
run `as_root` (if I read the source correctly). But the root user on a
clean machine doesn't have SSH trust to connect to any host causing
duplicity to break on login. I'd say there are two separate issues here:

- deja-dup shouldn't try to run as root in my case since backup was run under
local user and includes only its home dir
- there should be a UI for confirming connection to unknown hosts

[Bug 876070] [NEW] Backup cannot be restored on a fresh install

2011-10-16 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

0. Decided to reinstall Ubuntu 11.10 from scratch
1. Created a fresh backup of my /home/username on an SSH server with deja-dup
2. Reinstalled Ubuntu
3. Ran a restore process from deja-dup (a very slick UI, thank you!)
4. Entered SSH credentials, checked save password box
5. deja-dup successfully connected to server and listed available backup
6. Selected restore to original location
7. After severla seconds of Preparing... deja-dup asked me for a password to
elevate privileges (why? I'm only restoring my own home dir)
8. The UI wizard immediately turned to a terminal page reporting an error:
Connection failed, please check your password: Login dialog cancelled. When
running `deja-dup --restore` from terminal duplicity also reports exit code 38.

Note: same thing happens when pointing explicitly to a home directory
instead of original location at step 6.

Expected result is obviously a flawless restoration of my original home
dir in place.

[Bug 876070] Re: Backup cannot be restored on a fresh install

2011-10-16 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
One more thing. Just tried to copy the duplicity command line that deja-
dup logs into terminal and it seems to begin restore:

duplicity 'restore' '--restore-time=2011-10-16T20:59:05Z' '--gio' '--
force' 'sftp://maniac@192.168.1.100/data/maniac-envy' '/' '--no-
encryption' '--verbosity=9' '--gpg-options=--no-use-agent' '--archive-
dir=/home/maniac/.cache/deja-dup' '--log-file=/tmp/deja-dup-HIXL3V'

I've interrupted it to not lose the test environment.

I'm happy to log/debug this issue further but I won't be able to live
without my data more than couple of days and will eventually restore it
from *another* backup that I did alongside deja-dup with the good old
rsync :-).

[Bug 854404] [NEW] HP Envy 14 doesn't suspend by closing lid

2011-09-19 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

Laptop doesn't suspend by closing lid. Choosing Suspend from the
settings menu (the thing in upper-right corner) does work and opening
lid does wake the machine up if suspended this way. The problem didn't
manifest itself right after the upgrade to 11.10 beta but appeared after
some subsequent update.

Where to look if I have avahi disabled and how to detect if my network

A week ago I was connecting to a hotel WiFI network and got notification

never saw this happening on the network I'm on now, is it possible that
avahi was disabled persistently?

[Bug 755226] [NEW] syndaemon starts eating up 100% CPU after waking laptop from sleep

2011-04-08 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

The laptop is HP ENVY 14.
Ubuntu is 11.04 beta
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu10

Upon booting up syndaemon sits quietly and does what it has to. Upon
sleeping and waking the laptop up syndaemon climbs to the top of `top`
with 100% CPU usage. This also causes something called kworker/0:1 to
become top reason for CPU wake-ups in `powertop` and makes laptop fan
never stop.

[Bug 751101] [NEW] mms: links don't open in totem

2011-04-05 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Upon clicking (or navigating in any way) an mms: link Firefox asks in
which app it should be opened and suggests Totem. However selecting
Totem and clicking OK doesn't launch it, saying in console:

** (firefox-bin:11187): WARNING **: Could not launch default
application for URI: The specified location is not supported

This is happening in Firefox 4 in Natty beta. Firefox:
4.0~rc2+build3+nobinonly-0ubuntu2.
It used to work in Minefield in Maverick and from the look at about:plugins
everything seems identical. Also mms: links *do* open from Thunderbird in
Natty. I will be happy to do some logging/debugging, just tell me how :-).

[Bug 751101] Re: mms: links don't open in totem

2011-04-05 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Chris, thanks for the quick and useful reply!

I've updated Totem's desktop file per your suggestion and it fixed the
problem for me locally. Documenting the workaround for anyone who would
stumble upon this issue:

- edit /usr/applications/totem.desktop (requires sudo) by adding
x-scheme-handler/mms at the end of MimeType line
- run `sudo update-desktop-database` to update the MIME types cache

[Bug 448766] Re: inkscape crashed with SIGSEGV

2010-08-09 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Guys, it was ten months ago! Of course I don't remember what I was doing
that time exactly. And I'm sure I would describe steps to reproduce back
then if I would able to do it. Most probably it was just a random
crasher in the middle of something. Anyway since you've refactored the
whole subsystem I think it's safe just mark the ticket as invalid and
wait for other crashers if any.

[Bug 386081] Re: No visual indication upon choosing another WiFi network

2009-12-01 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Since this bug was describing pre-Karmic behavior it's indeed not valid
right now. However in Karmic network connection notification has its own
problems. I could file a new ticket or we can reopen this one. Or we can
forget about it :-).

[Bug 207253] Re: command export zip produces files with permission 000

2009-11-24 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
Martin, I'd like to fix this bug. What's the preferred way of submitting
a patch? Should I register a new branch for
https://code.launchpad.net/bzr or just make a bundle and attach it here?

[Bug 207253] Re: command export zip produces files with permission 000

2009-11-24 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
To clarify... I've read the guide: http://doc.bazaar-
vcs.org/developers/HACKING.html. I've made a local stacked branch of
bzr.dev which is probably why I can't commit directly to it. I can
convert it to a standalone one and push it. What bothers me is pushing
the whole Bazaar to LP just for a trivial one-line fix. Sounds rather
ineffective :-).

Ah! Will do. Once I unstack my bzr.dev copy locally :-)

[Bug 73023] Re: Round orange emblems have lack usability

2009-10-15 Thread Ivan Sagalaev
I've stumbled upon a strange thing about the emblems. Those applied by
some gnome magic to well-known directories like Music, Pictures etc.,
are positioned within the folder icon. Those that I try to apply myself
are positioned far beyond the upper right corner of the icon. Is this by
design?
