[Bug 761595] Re: Unity launcher tooltip does not disappear when switching windows between workspaces

2012-04-14 Thread Richard Senior
I've tried to duplicate this again with 12.04 and can't. Not even with a
fixed-width, no auto-hide launcher.

I'm changing the status to invalid. Bernard, if you feel this is still a
problem, please revert back to confirmed.

[Bug 974765] Re: Drive not found since 3.2.0-21... kernel panic, unable to mount root fs

2012-04-12 Thread Richard Senior
I just downloaded a fresh version of the Precise Beta 2 ISO and re-
installed on my problem machine. I did the same dist-upgrade that I did
yesterday and all is well. No issues with update-initramfs.

I'd suggest that this is most likely a problem with one of the old ISOs
and this bug should be marked invalid if James agrees?

Agree with James that this looks like an installer issue. On my fresh

apparent.

[Bug 974765] Re: Drive not found since 3.2.0-21... kernel panic, unable to mount root fs

2012-04-11 Thread Richard Senior
I've just done a clean install of 12.04 Beta 2 and got this problem
after apt-get dist-upgrade.

I see exactly the same symptoms as James describes with the messed-up
grub entries and kernel panic. My /usr/sbin/update-initramfs is also
linked to /bin/true.

I've worked around it by choosing the 3.2.0-20 kernel from the grub
menu, then I removed the 3.2.0-23 series with Synaptic and ran update-
grub.

My laptop has kernel 3.2.0-22 and all looks OK:

[Bug 975863] [NEW] Gimp behaves badly with Unity launcher

2012-04-07 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

Starting with a fresh install of Precise Beta:
- Install Gimp, search for it in the Dash and run it.
- Right-click on the launcher icon and lock to launcher
- Close Gimp
- Click on the icon to re-launch

The application launches but the launcher icon does not show the usual
white arrows.

Attempt to work around:
- Unlock the icon from the launcher
- Search for Gimp in the Dash and drag the icon to the launcher

An empty space appears where the icon should be. Clicking on the empty
space launches Gimp. Restarting Unity displays the icon and the launcher
icon works as it should.

[Bug 783238] Re: Uninstalled Thunderbird and set Evolution as default but Thunderbird still shown in Dash.

2011-05-16 Thread Richard Senior
Thanks for the suggestion, but those instructions are for 10.04. This is
primarily a Unity problem (with the Dash).

I think I have worked around the problem by deleting local .desktop
shortcuts for mail programs from ~/.local/share/applications, copied
/usr/share/applications/evolution.desktop to
~/.local/share/applications, reset Evolution as my preferred email
client and the Dash is now correctly displaying Evolution.

It could be that this problem was just specific to my setup, but I'll
leave the bug here. If nobody confirms it, it can be closed.

[Bug 770155] Re: window jumps partly to another workspace

2011-05-13 Thread Richard Senior
Having observed this for a while now, it seems to only affect windows
that are snapped to the extreme right of the workspace grid, i.e.
workspaces top-right and bottom-right in a 2x2 grid. Following on from
the last paragraph of my comment above, I'm guessing that the space
taken up by the launcher is not being taken into account in the
coordinates of windows. When a window does overlap another workspace, it
looks to be exactly the width of the launcher.

[Bug 770155] Re: window jumps partly to another workspace

2011-05-05 Thread Richard Senior
I can also confirm this. I think it's only started happening recently
(post final release) but I'm not 100% on that.

Steps to duplicate, starting with a clean desktop:

1. Open a window on workspace top-left
2. Switch to workspace top-right
3. Open a window and move it to bottom-right corner so it snaps
4. Switch between the two windows using launcher icons

The problem only happens for me if in step 3, the window is snapped to
the edge of the screen and not maximised. It does not happen if the
window is just very close to the edge of the workspace.

It also happens if Super-W is used to show all windows and the window is
focused. The key seems to be focusing to a window on another desktop
where that window is snapped right.

There is a slight difference in behaviour if the launcher is set to hide
in some way or set to never hide. In the case of never hide, the window
that is snapped right moves when switched to so that it overlaps another
workspace. In the case of hide, the window does not seem to move but
switching stops working.

[Bug 761595] [NEW] Unity launcher tooltip does not disappear when switching windows between workspaces

2011-04-15 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

If I switch from a window on one workspace to a window on another
workspace using the launcher, but don't leave the mouse hovered over the
launcher until the animation is complete, the tooltip sticks. It
disappears if the mouse is taken over the launcher and back out again.

The clearing of the tooltip appears to work only when the mouse leaves
the launcher *after* the change workspace animation is complete.

[Bug 755599] Re: Opening Audacity causes Unity-2D launcher and global menu to disappear

2011-04-11 Thread Richard Senior
Logged out and back in. All I started was a terminal to follow the
output of .xsession-errors.

I then hit the Super key to bring up the dash (had to hit it twice) and
launched Audacity. Launcher and top panel/global menu disappeared when
Audacity window appeared. No window decoration on Audacity window. Hit
Super-S a couple of times and the launcher and panel came back.

Closed Audacity and made a copy of .xsession-errors (attached).

[Bug 755599] Re: Opening Audacity causes Unity-2D launcher and global menu to disappear

2011-04-11 Thread Richard Senior
OK, I have a better pattern of failure now:

I lose launcher and panel in these cases:

1. Hit Super to open the Dash and escape to cancel
2. Hit Super to open the Dash and click on an active window without entering
text
3. Hit Super to open the Dash and run an application that opens full-screen
(Audacity/Synaptic in my case)
4. Hit Super to open the Dash, click on a lens, e.g. applications, then escape
to cancel

It behaves correctly in these cases:

1. Hit Super to open the Dash and Super again to cancel
2. Hit Super to open the Dash and click on the desktop to cancel

It recovers if I Hit Super-S a couple of times.

[Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-04-11 Thread Richard Senior
I don't know why I never thought of doing this before but I just tried
the open-source Nvidia driver and no white window problem. So it would
appear to be a problem with the driver, rather than Compiz.

[Bug 755599] [NEW] Opening Audacity crashes Unity-2D

2011-04-09 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity-2d

Following updates today (9th April 2011), any attempt to open Audacity
in Unity-2D causes the desktop environment to crash, leaving just the
Audacity window visible with no borders. I've tried with global menus

2011-04-09 Thread Richard Senior
Just confirmed that, on the same machine, Unity runs Audacity OK. Logged
out, logged back into Unity and ran Audacity fine.

(The reason I'm running 2D at all BTW, is that I have other problems
with the desktop locking up and white windows but it managed to hold
itself together long enough to run Audacity).

Have the same problem running Synaptic. Consistently crashing the
desktop.

I've just noticed that it may not be a crash and more of a repainting
issue. If I hit Super-S a few times the launcher and top panel come
back again.

[Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-04-08 Thread Richard Senior
Since the last couple of days' updates, this has got worse. The white
screen problem is still there, but now sometimes maximizing a window
will cause the desktop to hang completely and a reboot is required. With
one window on the screen at a time, it seems OK, but as soon as I have
multiple windows open it becomes unusable.

I've had to switch to Unity 2D on this desktop machine pending a fix or
workaround. My laptop has been running Natty Alpha through Beta with an
Intel graphics card and has been fine.

[Bug 752445] [NEW] Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-04-06 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Fresh install of Natty Beta. Nvidia graphics card with proprietary
driver.

Not all the time, but maximizing windows sometimes results in a white
window. Sometimes switching between windows (not necessarily maximised)
does the same. The window borders are there but the body of the window
is white. Resizing the window smaller sometimes makes it redraw.
Minimizing other applications sometimes makes it redraw. The white
window is most often the focussed window, but sometimes windows behind
the focussed window go white too.

Once an application has gone white, this seems to encourage other
windows to do the same. Minimizing all windows, reactivating the
required window and perhaps resizing will bring the window contents
back.

I don't think this is restricted to specific applications. I've been
able to duplicate the problem with Firefox, Thunderbird, Nautilus,
Synaptic, Terminal, Geany, Nvidia Settings and others.

It's not Unity. If I switch to Classic I get the same problem, although
perhaps with slightly less frequency. Switch to Classic with no effects
and the problem goes away. So I suspect a combination of Compiz and the
Nvidia driver that comes with Natty.

[Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-04-06 Thread Richard Senior
** Attachment added: Unfocussed windows sometimes go white too ...

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/752445/+attachment/1987678/+files/Screenshot-1.png

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

Fresh install of Natty Beta. Nvidia graphics card with proprietary
  driver.

- Not all the time, but maximizing windows results in a white window.
- Sometimes switching between windows (not necessarily maximised does the
- same). The window borders are there but the body of the window is white.
- Resizing the window smaller sometimes makes it redraw. Minimizing other
- applications sometimes makes it redraw. The white window is most often
- the focussed window, but sometimes windows behind the focus window go
- white too.
+ Not all the time, but maximizing windows sometimes results in a white
+ window. Sometimes switching between windows (not necessarily maximised)
+ does the same. The window borders are there but the body of the window
+ is white. Resizing the window smaller sometimes makes it redraw.
+ Minimizing other applications sometimes makes it redraw. The white
+ window is most often the focussed window, but sometimes windows behind
+ the focussed window go white too.

- and the problem goes away.
+ and the problem goes away. So I suspect a combination of Compiz and the
+ Nvidia driver that comes with Natty.

[Bug 751348] [NEW] Compiz crashes whenever a checkbox is changed in Compiz Config Settings Manager

2011-04-05 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Running Unity, whenever I try and change a checkbox in CCSM, Compiz
crashes. For example, trying to disable the Place Windows plugin or the
Desktop Wall. Or trying to enable Ring Switcher, etc. I've not checked
them all.

[Bug 739865] Re: Unity launcher icons disappear or corrupted before notification appears

2011-03-23 Thread Richard Senior
It happens every session.

However, I suspect now that it may only happen with some notifications
and not others.

Ubuntu One file sync notification was the test case I used in the
screenshot. Things like Evolution and Gwibber don't produce the effect,
neither does Banshee.

I've now received a patch from upstream to test and confirmed it's OK.
This should find it's way into 2.6.38 in due course.

[Bug 739865] [NEW] Unity launcher icons disappear or corrupted before notification appears

2011-03-21 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

When a notification is about to appear, icons near the top of the
launcher are blacked out and a group of icons about two-thirds of the
way down have a lighter background. Windows are not generally affected,
despite the appearance of the screenshot. The effect is very short-lived
(probably 1s) and once the notification appears, the launcher goes
back to normal.

[Bug 735466] Re: USB device fails to connect - device descriptor read/64, error -110

2011-03-17 Thread Richard Senior
As per the forum thread, I've reported the bug upstream and been asked
to work through a git bisect to locate the commits between 2.6.37 final
release and 2.6.38rc1 that first caused the problem. This is in progress
and I expect to complete on 18th March.

In doing this testing I'm noticing that this issue may be linked to
lsusb hanging. I've observed that on bad kernels, lsusb hangs while
this device is plugged and then completes when the device cable is
removed. On good kernels, lsusb reports the device correctly.

[Bug 736786] [NEW] Ubuntu One notes editor doesn't apply strikethrough to font

2011-03-17 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

With Tomboy notes synchronized to Ubuntu One, I can apply a
strikethrough font in Tomboy and it synchronizes correctly with Ubuntu
One. But it doesn't work the other way around. The editor in the website
provides a strikethough button and the font can be changed but this is
ignored on saving.

[Bug 735466] [NEW] USB device fails to connect - device descriptor read/64, error -110

2011-03-15 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kernel-package

I have a Tascam DP-01FX Digital Analog Workstation (DAW) for recording
audio. It has a USB interface for exporting WAV files that I've used
successfully on Ubuntu versions up to 10.10. After upgrade to 11.04

device is connected:

I've searched many bug reports and tried suggestions like disabling
ehci-ecd, cold boot with complete power removal and trying different
cables. These don't make a difference. I believe I've isolated the
problem to 2.6.38 series kernels and can consistently have the device
connect with 2.6.37 but not 2.6.38. I tried the daily build of 2.6.38
(14th March 2011) and that fails.

Judging by other bug reports with similar error messages on previous
kernel releases, I would think that this is likely to affect other USB
devices.

[Bug 732733] Re: Netbeans does not work properly with Unity Launcher

A workaround to get Netbeans to launch from the Unity launcher is to
drag from /usr/share/applications onto the launcher. A second icon
appears while Netbeans is running but at least it can be launched.

[Bug 714300] Re: ath5k wireless failes to connect natty alpha2

2011-03-11 Thread Richard Senior
I was having this problem yesterday with 11.04 Natty Alpha 3 but today
I've used apt-get dist-upgrade and pulled in kernel 2.6-38-6. It's been
extremely stable, including standing up to the odd Compiz crash (which
was killing my wireless yesterday), suspend/resume, copying 6GB of data
via NFS and an hour displaying streaming live TV. General web browsing
has been fine. All looking good.

[Bug 732733] [NEW] Netbeans does not work properly with Unity Launcher

2011-03-10 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: netbeans

If Netbeans is launched from a Unity shortcut, it launches ok. Right-
click and select Keep in Launcher. Application name is shown as java-
lang-Thread. Close Netbeans and try to re-launch from the launcher. The
icon pulses for a few seconds but Netbeans does not launch.

In some cases the title bar of Netbeans is missing but I cannot find a
pattern to this. May be associated with whether Netbeans was closed when
maximised or full-screen but it's not consistent. On launch, the title
bar is sometimes missing, the menu font is compressed vertically and
menus appear to be in the wrong place. Clicking on one menu actually
brings up another. Switching back and forth between full-screen (in the
application) and maximised sorts it out.

[Bug 572617] [NEW] Compiz fails to decorate windows after upgrade

2010-04-30 Thread Richard Senior
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS; Compiz: 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15
2.6.32-21-generic #32-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 16 08:09:38 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Following upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04, window decorations are not visible
on boot where compiz was used as the window manager.

Temporary fix is to invoke System-Preferences-Appearance-Effects and
select any option that requires compiz. Dialog is displayed Searching
for available drivers and decorations are restored. System works
normally until logging out or rebooting, when decorations are lost
again. System-Preferences-Appearance-Effects is reset to None.

The following appears in /var/log/syslog and in ~/.xsession-errors:

Apr 30 17:40:38 localhost gnome-session[4861]: WARNING: Could not launch
application '107b2324a463b43b3f12677324529757860046050023.desktop':
Unable to start application: Failed to execute child process
/usr/bin/compiz.real (No such file or directory)

Other workarounds:

a. Having selected effects as above, select Remember running applications
from Startup Applications
b. Invoke /usr/bin/compiz --replace as a startup application
c. ln -s /usr/bin/compiz /usr/bin/compiz.real
d. Invoke /usr/bin/metacity from command line or as a startup application

[Bug 461843] Re: Evolution segfaults when creating a new Task or Memo on Karmic RC

Hi,

I've got the same problem as Steve. I've been able to submit the crash
report using apport as requested.

I note that the problem only occurs if tasks and notes are added
directly in the list view in Evolution. If the New button is used,
tasks and notes don't cause a crash.

[Bug 353080] Re: Netbeans IDE 6.5 don't autocomplete import statement

2009-04-16 Thread Richard Senior
I think this is the same issue as:

http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=160498

The current version of NetBeans available at netbeans.org doesn't have
this bug. I've manually installed NetBeans 6.5.1 on Ubuntu 9.04 and the
problem goes away. Does that make it a packaging issue?

I should add that, although it sounds a trivial issue, auto-completing
imports is important to Java developers.
