[Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
Hi Harrison, Intel used to ask users using the latest proprietary firmware from upstream[1]. The proprietary firmware is a blackbox in opensource, so we are trying to figure out the stable combination of kernel and related firmware. So far there are 2 kernel flavors verified works in the environment of #27 in Focal: 1. HWE kernel 5.11 + latest firmware iwlwifi-QuZ-a0-hr-b0-59.ucode (you can try it from the linux-firmware from #21 which is doing SRU) 2. OEM kernel 5.13 + latest firmware -63 (you can try it from the linux-firmware from #21 which is doing SRU) We did not check the latest mainline kernel[2] + latest upstream firmware [1] because so far the above 2 works well in our WIFI AX environment. We are wondering if any difference from the Steve's environment and yours keep the Intel proprietary firmware crashing. Could you please check if the above 2 kernel flavors plus the linux-firmware doing SRUing work on your environment? If it still failed, could you please share with us the dmesg and lspci (better to get sosreport as well) and which WIFI 6 AP you are connecting to? So that we can try reproducing your issue here :) [1] https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git [2] https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1932548 Title: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux-firmware/+bug/1932548/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
@skidooman Could you try the software configuration you are using in #26, but disable UFW? I am using Precision 5750 from daily basis (it utilizes the same Wi-Fi firmware as yours), but I didn't encounter the firmware crash like yours so frequently, I can finish the meeting with Wi-Fi everyday, and I am using https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/WiFi-Routers/ASUS-WiFi-Routers/RT-AX56U/, which is Wi-Fi 6 too. From the log, the UFW keeps blocking the packet from the AP 192.168.1.1, then the firmware can't handle the request from driver and it is crashed. Sorry that we can't debug the firmware, since it is a pure binary from Intel. By the way, could you attach the Access Point information? I'll try if we can find the same model here in Taiwan. Hi Alex: I gave it a go during Mark's presentation. I am sorry to report it is not solved. Wifi6 is freezing on a regular basis, while non-wife6 connections are just fine. Here's the dmesg appended. Re: [Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
OK guys, please let me know if there are anything else you need me to do to help you diagnose this. All I can say is that if I am on wired OR on a Wifi that is not Wifi 6, I do not see the freeze. But on my Wifi 6 access point it is easily replicable. That does not affect other OSes I have at home. Windows, Mac and Android are all OK, so I know the base itself is not the problem. Re: [Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
Hi Alex: Alright, here's the dmesg as attached. So, here's something funny that happened today. I lost power, so used my cell phone as a hotspot with my Linux machine. My cell phone is not Wifi6. Even after power was restored, I forgot that I was on the hotspot and I did a meeting with about 10 people. And guess what? No freeze, not even a slight! Perhaps this was self-evident to you, but I think that the Wifi6 factor that makes the difference. In the lab, did you try with Wifi6? [Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
Hi Steve, my comment #12 is saying the firmware in #9 works on the machine in certification lab, so that HWE is doing a SRU [1] to land that firmware. But that firmware seems not to work for your case(refer to your comment #10 which I missed when commenting #9). Could you please also provide your dmesg again when for the issue after you applied the firmware from #9 or from [1] [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/1934217 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1932548 Title: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1932548/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Kai-Chuan: Let me do this after I just reproduced the bug. The last two days I kept my computer connected through Ethernet because the freeze really impedes my ability to understand my counterparts. [Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
@skidooman 1. the ucode should be in /lib/firmware, please check kernel log, if the latest firmware is loaded $ journalctl -k | grep "loaded firmware version" 2. the iperf test for local area network performance, you need such scenario your PC (with problem) <-Wireless-> Access Point <-Ethernet-> Any PC (testbed) Install iperf3 on both side PC $ sudo apt install iperf3 For testing Tx, run client command on your PC and server command on test bed. For testing Rx, run server command on your PC and client command on test bed. server command: $ iperf -s -i 1 client command: $ iperf -c -t 100 -i 1 you can monitor the throughput instantly on client side. the key point is the rate should comply your Wi-Fi selected modulation and stable. For example, you can see the bit rate by running $ iwconfig, the throughput roughly should be the half of the theoretical rate, which is the bit rate you are using now, sometimes it may constraint by the bus speed, but that's the other story. I think the most important part for video conference is stability, you can focus on that. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1932548 Title: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0] To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/1932548/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
Hi Kai-chuan: 1. On UFW, I disabled it, but it did not work. 2. For iperf, I did not know this tool existed, and I am not sure how to generate the right data. Please advise here. 3. I also tried the new ucode file. This is what I did: I cloned the git repo and copied the file into /usr/lib/firmware. Good news is that after reboot the Internet connection worked. But I did not have the opportunity to test this during a meeting yet though. 4. Stéphane Verdy, who you probably know, gave me the "decoding ring". When Daniel van Vugt said "the kernel is about two weeks old", this newbie had no idea if this was a good thing. I thought the kernel got updated automatically - I was probably mistaken. So I updated it manually. So, interestingly, it solved PART of the problem. When I am in a 1:1 discussion, it works flawlessly on wireless. But if there are multiple people in the call, then it started having issues again. Give me a few days here. I have a few calls upcoming, I will give the wifi a try in different settings (1:1 and multiple folks) and let you know if (3) + (4) actually did the trick (because on the 1:1, I could only test (4) in isolation so far). [Bug 1932548] Re: [Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX201] Video conferences constantly freeze when I am on wireless [8086:a0f0]
Hello, I check the log, there are two questions? 1. have you tried to disable ufw? does it help? 2. did you run iperf test to check the wireless throughput? I found there is a Wi-Fi firmware crash inside the log, but I am not sure if it is the root cause, Generally, the driver should have recovery mechanism after the micorcode crash.
