On my machine I don't really want to test an alpha release of a kernel,
but I gave a try to #127. It doesn't boot on my laptop (core i5 540),
but I think that's not connected with graphics but something else.
Anyway, the good thing is that I can see the normal splash screen, so

Nvidia-settings actually should not set that option.
The option IgnoreAbi is in use now with xserver 1.9 because there are no
nvidia drivers around to fully support this new xserver.
So, IgnoreAbi is a workaround, not a fix.

Could you please try adding UNITY_PANEL_INDICATORS_SKIP=all to
/etc/environment and restart and login to unity session. I want to see
if the issue still happens if there are no indicators.

This was reported on 8.04.3 and persisted on all Hardy upgrades. I've
moved on to 10.04 and the problem no longer exists. I never ran Karmic
or Lucid and don't have an easy way to go back. Since the problem was
related to maintaining state, it probably can't be checked with a live CD.
