The example spreadsheet you sent me privately betrays the problem.
You are entering numbers using the style of the Indian numbering
system - where digits are grouped in twos except for the rightmost
three - instead of the system used in most regions of the world -
where digits are grouped in threes throughout. In that system, large
numbers are entered as, say, 1,23,45,678 instead of 12,345,678. If
you don't have your language or locale set appropriately, LibreOffice
will not recognise your entry as being a number and will instead
preserve your exact input as a text string.

It is very easy to solve this problem: you simply need to tell
LibreOffice that you are entering numbers in the Indian fashion. You
can do this most easily by setting your locale correctly in
LibreOffice (or perhaps even in your operating system before you
install LibreOffice). Go to Tools | Options... | Language Settings |
Languages | Language of | Locale setting, and choose an appropriate
value there. If you have that set to English (India), Gujarati,
Hindi, etc., you should find that Calc will accept numbers entered
with comma separation in the Indian style.

Alternatively, if you don't wish to set your locale to an Indian one,
you can set Indian style for number acceptance by formatting cells
appropriately before entering values. On the Numbers tab of the
Format Cells dialogue, there is a language selection drop-down menu
at the top right. If you select an Indian language there, you can
enter your values with comma separation in the Indian style.

Note that changing your locale will not automatically convert any
existing values. You can convert them using the VALUE() function,
providing that you have first set your locale or the cell format to
an appropriate Indian option. Alternatively, you can simply retype any values.

I trust this helps.

*The save tool could not be dimmed *

I updated my LibreOffice for Windows, and I am using 5.1.2.2. Several days
ago, I noticed that the SAVE tool could not be dimmed even when I saved
something.

I attempted to go to

*Tools | Options | LibreOffice | General | Document Status |*

* | Allow to save document even when the document is not modified|*

*I did not find *

*| Allow to save document even when the document is not modified|*
but I found

*| Printing sets "document modified" status | * checked

I unchecked it, but I found that nothing changed.

How can I dim the SAVE tool when I save something?

Also, format the column as numbers. That way when you enter a number it
is recorded as such. If the column is formatted as text, and you input a
number it is interpreted as a character.

One way you can get numbers as text is when you import a CSV file, and forget
to merk the column as numbers. Or when you paste from plain text and forget the
same.

One way to get them as numbers is to add a function in another column,
containing
=NUMBERVALUE(B2)
if the first number is in cell B2.
Then copy this down for all numbers in the original column. Now you have a copy of your numbers, and they
are really formatted as numbers. Now Copy this column with Edit > Copy and do a Edit > Paste
Special over the original "text numbers", selecting only "Numbers".

Macros, as described in books such as _Six Sigma Statistics with Excel

in Corporate Finance_ by Craig W Holden, is a somewhat specialized topic.

With LibO, one can legitimately treat books such as _Automated Data
Collection with R_ by Simon Munzert et al (ISBN 9781118834817) as the
extended documentation for LibO, precisely because one can use R as the
preferred macro language for LibO.

On second thoughts, Munzert's book isn't an appropriate example, because
it is about web scraping. On the gripping hand, extensions such as SMF
are, for all practical purposes, webscrapers.

Point is, with LibO, if you think that APL is the perfect macro
programming language, go for it.

For people to learn what functionality is available.

Should the documentation team be creating the LibreOffice equivalent of
_Credit Risk Modeling using Excel_ by Gunter Loeffler, or _Quantitative
Models for Performance Evaluastions and Benchmarking_ by Joe Zhu?

Or would it be more suitable for the team to leave an individual or
organization to pursue the goal of "Transform finance education to be
based on LibreOffice"?
(Slogan is a deliberate misquote of Craig Holden's organization
SpreadSheet Modelling.
(Now wondering if he'd put an individual who created all of the
spreadsheets in _Excel Modelling in Corporate Finance_ using
LibreOffice, on his Honour Roll.))

Short answer: it should work :)

If a cell is somehow stuck in the "text" type, you could try clearing all
formatting on this cell (defaults to Ctrl-M), or select the affected cells,
do right-click/properties, then select an appropriate number format.
However, LibreOffice should recognize number automatically unless
explicitely instructed to treat them as text; this can happen from weird
copy/paste, when opening files in exotic formats, or by doing it by hand.
It is also possible (although we didn't see a sample file) that there are
extra characters in the cells, or maybe an invalid decimal separator for
the file's locale.

If you could upload a sample somewhere, we might get a better look at it
:)

I agree that their support also has issues, but the good thing is the
number of printed resources available.  Did I mention I like to read

A number of years ago I completed a very large VB6 project.  A month
later MS announced the end of VB as we knew it.  That is when I decided
to go with open source where ever possible.  I still feel that way, but

For most users, the recorder is a decent solution.

As for support,
do not expect that from MS unless you have a credit card. I found some
bugs in their C++ compiler about 15 years ago. 5 to 10 years later I
thought for sure they would have fixed them. Nope, I had to work around
them yet again. It had to do with their streaming classes. There was a
failure when the boundary was split by a buffer read for some
built-in text reading routines. Not like I could just call MS and get
support.

For sure they have a better object layer for manipulating
documents. Not even close. I have never looked at their Macro
programming resources, but, if possible, be certain to use the .NET
classes since VBA is still littered with bugs. Last time I wrote a VBA
application, half my code was related to working around bugs in their
language implementation. These bugs initially existed in OpenOffice.org,
but were fixed years ago; for example, bugs related to determining an
arrays size in certain circumstances. I had to write special routines to
deal with these issues. Moving to the .NET versions made things really
nice, however, with full access to the .NET container classes.

If you
have no particular need to run where MSO is not supported, not a bad
move. Good luck on your project.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Simple sum in column getting zero in libreoffice calc 5.

2016-05-11 Thread Bruce Hohl
Check cell formats and contents in B2:B8. SUM() will not add numbers
within cells formatted as text or numbers preceded by a half quote. Per
below the sum() result is 4 as such items are not summed.

4 '=SUM(B2:B8)
2 Cell number format with '2 (note the half quote)
3 Cell number format with '3 (note the half quote)
5 Cell formatted as text.
1 Cell number format with 1
1 Cell number format with 1
1 Cell number format with 1
1 Cell number format with 1

The mailing list doesn't accept attachments. You could use Nabble for that
(http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/nabble/)

The simplest explanation would be that your "numbers" are entered as text.
Check your cell format.

[libreoffice-users] Simple sum in column getting zero in libreoffice calc 5.

2016-05-11 Thread shirish शिरीष
Hi all,

I was trying a simple addition in column =SUM(B2:B8)

but that didn't work . I am getting the output as zero.

Could somebody look at it and share what is/was wrong ?

Sharing an example worksheet for the same.

[libreoffice-users] ImageMagick RCE exploit "ImageTragick" CVE 2016-3714

2016-05-11 Thread V Stuart Foote
Not directly a LibreOffice issue--this is just a safe computing suggestion.

Folks probably should update installed version of the ImageMagick image
utilities.

Affecting Linux/OS X/Windows flavors. Has been patched by ImageMagick for
releases > 7.0.1-2 and > 6.9.4-0 so download and upgrade to a current
build. Available from the project site
http://www.imagemagick.org/script/index.php (or check for package support
for your distro).

LibreOffice does not install it, rather makes use of ImageMagick when
present as a helper for a number of image filter/conversion actions.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Calc macro tutorial

2016-05-11 Thread dave boland
Andrew,

Thanks for the note.  I actually do software development (Java right
now) and enjoy reading documentation (no, not crazy - I've been tested).
But when I read a document called "Getting Started With Macros", I
reasonably expect it to cover the basics of how to create a macro from
scratch - like I would with a VB program (did that for 6 years).  I was
disappointed to see that it was about using the macro recorder, which
will not work for me.

I get that the authors are volunteers, and that generally the do a
fantastic job.  However, in this area, not so much.

I've decided that in the short term Calc (and Base) will not fit my
needs (documentation, support concerns) and will move the data to
Excel/Access.  Not what I wan to do, and not what LO community should
like, but it seems like the best course of action for this project.

That seems the same issue of tdf#93553
   which has been
fixed, on master and for the 5.1.4 release. But will not likely be back
ported to the 5.0 branch.

You can check to see if it works better for you with a parallel /A admin
install of a current build of master or the daily build of the 5.1.4
branch. Or upgrade to 5.1.4 when released mid-June.

[libreoffice-users] LO 5.0.5.2 writer freezes during save on Win 7

2016-05-11 Thread Bo Siltberg
Sometimes during save, the progress bar freezes, mostly somewhere close to
the middle. Usually the saving continues after a few seconds but someones
LO freeze and never recover. The only way out is to kill the process. This
happens in win 7, not on win 10. The progress bar freeze on both systems,
it is only in win 7 it sometimes does not continue.

Looks like it helps to "warm up" the system, do a small change, save, do
another small change and save. If no hanging so far, then the following
saves in this session usually works.

The document is large, more than 900 pages, so it usually takes some 30
seconds to save when it works.

Anyone know how to track this down? Do the "usual support action" to delete
my profile??

Thanks
Bo
