Re: [libreoffice-users] Editing contents of an ODS file...

2022-01-14 Thread Gilles Gravier
Merci Sophie!

So I played with that. But it happens that the content.xml file itself
is too badly corrupted for me to recover it. :(

Thanks! At least I learned how to unpack and ODF file... check the
content... and repack the file to a working version... But the content
was too damaged this time... I'll know next time.

[libreoffice-users] Editing contents of an ODS file...

2022-01-14 Thread Gilles Gravier
Hi!

I have a broken ODS file. LibreOffice can't repair it.

When opening the ODS file in an archiver I can see that the directory
META-INF contains a vastly corrupted file. The rest of the files
inside seem OK.

So I'm tempted to remove the META-INF directory and see if I can open the file.

Unfortunately 7--zip let's me open the ODF file, and even extract its
contents... but not write the updated archive.

Any idea how I can do that?

Thanks!

Gilles

Because in the document O = West, not East (which I forgot to point out).

Problem solved by copy/pasting into a text colum, manually selecting the
relevant cells, and running a regex to prepend a minus sign. Not proud of

[libreoffice-users] Re: [Calc] Convert GPS coords from DMS to decimals?

2020-11-22 Thread Gilles
Thank you.

The issue with Error 509 was apparently due to columns being of the wrong
type (source should be text, and target should be number), and using ","
instead of ";" in Left() and Mid().

After copy/pasting into/from Notepad, it's working… but the West/East isn't:
Even when LO finds "O" ("ouest" for West) in the source, I'm not getting a
negative as expected:

[libreoffice-users] [Draw] Colorize SVG?

2020-11-16 Thread Gilles
Hello,

I know nothing about graphic design, and am trying to make a flyer for a
club I'm a member of.

Inkscape and GIMP are pretty big, so I'm first trying LibreOffice Draw.

To get a clean look when zooming in, I used ImageMagick's Convert to turn
the club's logo from PNG to PNM, and then used Potrace to turn the PNM into
SVG:

c:\Apps\ImageMagick\convert.exe logo.png logo.pnm
c:\Apps\potrace\potrace.exe -s -o logo.svg logo.pnm

Problem is, when importing the SVG in Draw, it's black and white, while the
original was orange.

What would you recommend I do to either keep the original color when
converting, and re-colorize the SVG for use in Draw?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] [Calc] Keyboard shortcut to delete current row when focus on one of its cells?

Hello,

CTRL+- only works when 1) reaching for the mouse and 2) clicking on its ID

point of keyboard shortcuts.

Do you know of a way?

That was the easiest solution:

Next, copy the cell (formula), select all the cells below, and paste.

But before, make sure the destination column is also set to Text, like the

2020-07-14 Thread Gilles
Lessons learned:
1. By default, LO uses "Default Text" for formatting: Make sure you use Text
Body for parapgraphs
2. Make sure you do no not change formatting locally, eg. changing the font
size: Use Styles for this
3. To remove local changes, select the text, and hit CTRL+M ("Clear Direct
Formatting"). If the document contains a ToC, do not select it, as it will
prevent LO from performing that action.

Thanks but I still don't get it:

Thanks.

I did copy/paste text from elsewhere (OCR) but used the Pure Text utility
when importing to make sure I only got unformatted text.

However, at some point, I made the wrong decision to use Arial Unicode MS 11
instead of Liberation Serif 12 for paragraphs. It shows when reading the
EPUB on my e-reader (the font is bigger: https://postimg.cc/4Y9hv6B3

On closer scrutinity, some paragraphs are Default Text while others are Text
Body: Is there a way to turn all "Default Style" to "Text Body"? This option
seems unavailable in the Find & Replace dialog.

[libreoffice-users] [newbie/Calc] How to mix relative/absolute cells in formula?

2019-10-02 Thread Gilles
Hello,

Another newbie question: I need to show percentages in columns.

This involves using a relative cell as numerator, and an absolute cell as
denominator.

https://postimg.cc/G9tccRmV

I tried adding $…
1. in the first cell: NOK.
2. in the second cell: NOK.

How can I apply the formula to all cells downward?

Thank you.

Thanks.

The goal is to merge the work of different presentators at a conference
somehow, so that people can then read the whole thing on the web 1) in one
go (with some kind of bookmarks or separators between each presentation) and
2) as HTML+JPG so they don't have to bother with PDFs.

I assume LO supports templates: Maybe I could build one, and ask all
presentators to use that template and LO so that we end up with a common,
homogenous material that I can merge and turn into HTML+JPG.

[libreoffice-users] Best practices when working with LibreOffice Impress?

2018-05-11 Thread Gilles
Hello,

I have zero knowledge of PDF, and need to make a list of recommendations to
users working with LibreOffice Impress so that their presentations will use
the same parameters (size, fonts, etc.) and be rendered into nice HTML.

I have a couple of newbie questions:

1. Wouldn't it be easier/better to merge and convert LibreOffice files
directly into HTML instead of going through PDF? If that's the case, what
tool would you recommend (Windows or Linux)?

2. If going through PDF doesn't matter, what tool + settings do you
recommend to a) convert the files into PDF (if LO isn't good enough) and
merge them all into a single PDF?

So far, I've used LibreOffice to export files as PDF, and PDFSam to merge
PDF files into one. I've never used GhostView (gv) to convert to PDF.

Thank you.

A (good) open source project is managed the same way as a good proprietary
software. In the sense that when new code is written, it gets reviews
according to predefined project governance, and then accepted or rejected.
That's the difference (in the open source world) between the contributors
(people who write code, patches, or even documentations, or participate in
driving community activities...) and the committers, who are the people who
can accept new contributions into the code base.

So when somebody writes a patch for a bug (you can, too, if you want, and
have the skills) and contributes it, it gets fully reviewed and (possibly)
approved and committed.

This happens for patches correcting issues, as well as all new code
bringing new functionality. This ensures that the project also keeps on
track with what the project strategy team is looking for.

Does it mean that no bugs get missed? No, of course. But that's the same as
for any software project. What it means is that there is the same type of
quality control mechanisms as for proprietary projects... but many many
more eyes looking at the code for bugs. So in average (COVERITY 2014
report) open source code tends to actually be higher quality than
proprietary with a density of 0.61 bugs per thousand lines of code for open
source versus 0.76 for proprietary (page 6 of the report available here :
http://go.coverity.com/rs/157-LQW-289/images/2014-Coverity-Scan-Report.pdf).

Note that in the paragraphs above, I didn't mention what project this
applies to. It's because it applies to ALL software projects (open source
or not, LibreOffice or others). :)

Enjoy the great software LibreOffice from The Documentation Foundation !

Can Calc plot an empty x/y graph with just the labels on the two sides and
grid, like this:

And if it can export it as a vector graphic, I could open it in a paint

original maths.

[libreoffice-users] Simple way to draw graphs ?

2017-08-14 Thread Gilles
Hello

I'd like to use LO to redraw graphs scanned from a book, such at this one:

Is there a simple way in LO to do this, ideally without using maths (unless
it's a no-brainer)?

Thank you.

Thanks much everyone. I naively thought it could simply be done by converting
the PDF into text in LO, and run a few regexes to build a TOC :-/

Hello,

This PDF file

has no Table of Contents, and I was wondering if LO could grab all the

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] [Win 5.1.6.2] Writer fails reading Win1252-encoded HTML document

2017-01-15 Thread Gilles
Hello

I wrote an HTML document using an older release of Nano WebEditor. I guess
it saves data as Win1252 instead of UTF8.

When opening the file in LibreOffice, all the accents are messed up:

https://s29.postimg.org/iicxnws1z/Libre_Office_Writer_How_to_convert_from_Win1252_t.jpg

Any idea what I could try when opening the file, or afterwards?

Thank you.

Re: [libreoffice-users] need help off this list - need Linux package choice help

2016-10-24 Thread Gilles Gravier
So... for version 2.0, you need the PPA (version 1.4 is in the default
repositories).

And... 16.10 isn't yet in the PPA.

And the command isn't apt-get-repository but add-apt-repository ... :)

Appart from that the idea is great.

The LibreOffice software is published under the Mozilla Public License
Version 2.0... Not a particularly restrictive license.
LO License : https://www.libreoffice.org/about-us/licenses/
MPL 2.0 : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/MPL/2.0/

In fact it's a great license to enable combining with other software.

Now, when Oracle (I used to work there) gave the OOo code to Apache,
they were really hoping to kill LO. But to their big surprise (and
contrary to all the bullshit I was given by the (at the time) head of
software strategy there), LO dit way better than OOo. OOo suffers from
many problems, from structural (Apache has taken an unreasonable amount
of time to clean up all the code - in particular licenses - but not the
actual algorithmics of the app) to project-wise (developers not adhering
to the idea, not committed to contributing enough, and as a result, new
versions comming out drop by drop, one every year and a half - when LO
has new versions every few months or more often).

So the good guys here are LO. They're doing great work. They're keeping
alive software that Oracle did its best to "not kill" (it was a
commitment from Oracle to the European Commission when they acquired
Sun)... while still doing its best to make it disappear (they are really
upset that they never found a way to make money from it, and that they
never could control the community the way thew would have wanted to -
case in point, The Document Foundation is the exact opposite of what
Oracle wanted to achieve - including limiting sponsorship amounts so
that no single entity can claim to have overwhelming financial impact to
justify imposing directions to the project).

It would be a good thing FOR EVERYBODY if Apache decided to officially
call it quits on OOo, and put out one last version that had links for
next updates to the LibreOffice web site. Of course they have too much
pride to even accept the idea of doing this, so instead, they are
leaving their users with software that is terribly outdated (last build
4.1.2 is dated October 28th, 2015, and I'll let you imagine the number
of unpatched vulnerabilities inside)... They are pathetic. And
dangerous. And dying... Apache Foundation has many much more great
projects that they are working on, and doing a great job of keeping active!

Gilles

Just the file->Exit LibreOffice menu doesn't.

[libreoffice-users] [LibreOffice 5.0.1.2] How to export a single file from a PPT file?

2015-09-16 Thread Gilles
Hello

I'm using LibreOffice 5.0.1.2 to open a PowerPoint file using LO's Impress.

I can successfully export all the slides in one go through File > Export as
images, but can't find how to export a given slide.

I searched through the File menu, through the "Export as images" dialog, by
right-clicking on the slide, all to no avail.

Google didn't help either.

Is there really no way to export just a single slide?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] [LibreOffice 5.0.1.2] How to play an animated slide?

2015-09-16 Thread Gilles
Hello

I have another Impress-related question to which I (obviously) found no
answer.

Some of the slides are animated, but Impress only shows the first part. I
notice that those slides an little icon on the left…
http://s12.postimg.org/r5u63t771/Libre_Office_Impress_play_animated_slide.png
… but I found no item in the menu that offered a way to split an animated
slide into its different steps.

Is there a way, at least, to see the different steps on an animated slide?

Thank you.

As a work-around, I installed MS' free PowerPoint Viewer, and copy/pasted
screenshots into (again) Paintshop Pro because PPV's "Copy slide" function
doesn't copy screenshots in a format that PSP couldn't understand.

Still, I wish Impress could read PowerPoint animated slides, at least show
the final output.

[libreoffice-users] [Calc] Automate creation of series of full date (ie. Day name, Date)?

2015-07-15 Thread Gilles
Hello

I often use Calc to prepare multi-day trips, and have to write series that
look like this:

Mon 1 Aug
Tue 2 Aug
Wed 3 Aug

Does Calc come with a way to automate this tedious task, or is there some

Thank you.

Found it: What you type in the cell must match exactly the format chosen in
the Format Cells dialog, in the Format section.

For instance, if you choose Fri. 31 Dec. 99, that is exactly what you must
type for LO to figure things out.

Thanks a lot!

I simply typed Mon 1 Aug and expected LO to figure it out.

But I guess the doco should say that user must first start with a simple
DD/MM/, before telling LO that it's a date, and clicking to get a
series. Computers are not *that* smart ;-)

I need to export all the slides that are part of a PowerPoint document. I

[libreoffice-users] Re: Turning spreadsheet data into legible report?

2014-03-20 Thread Gilles
Thanks everyone for the feedback.

As I learn more about spreadsheets, I thought merging all the years together
into a single sheet and filtering data so that the wordprocessor would only
see a subset of it would solve the issue... but it's not such a great idea
since some students will attend more than one year, so they'll end up having
more than one document in their name :-/

I guess it's an illustration that using a spreasheet as poorman's database
only works for basic, one-dimensional needs.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Turning spreadsheet data into legible report?

Problem solved: Indeed, putting all the data into a single worksheet works
OK.

The only drawback is empty documents for kids who didn't attend a given
year, but this could be avoided by adding some conditional loop in the Word
mail merge document to avoid printing empty sections (eg. If
Trimester1-2013 is empty, don't display list).

Thanks all.

[libreoffice-users] Turning spreadsheet data into legible report?

2014-03-19 Thread Gilles
Hello

A friend is a school teacher and needs to publish a report from the data she
keeps in an Excel document. In addition, she only has access to Word/Excel,
while Access is not available (she doesn't know databases, anyway.)

I originally thought Word's mail merge would do, but without programming, it
only supports reading data from a single sheet, while data is kept in
multiple sheets (one by year). Here's a screenshot of a mock document I
re-created in LO:
http://postimg.org/image/v2au21zsh/

Unless someone knows of a good, programming-free, Excel-based solution, it
looks like the right way to solve this problem is to stop using Excel as
poor man's database, and write a real database application with tables,
relations, input forms and report output... but she obviously doesn't have
the skills, doesn't have internal resources available for help, and I can't
spend time on this.

I know it's akward to ask this in an LO mailing-list, but can someone
experimented confirm that there's no MS Office-based solution (either
internal or third-party), and that moving to LibreOffice Base is the way to
go?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Re: Turning spreadsheet data into legible report?

2014-03-19 Thread Gilles
Sorry about that.

The spreadsheet 1) has too many columns to fit on a document, even in
Landscape mode (she wants Portrait), and 2) data are spread on multiple
sheets, one by year.

She needs to print the data thusly:
=
Last Name: Doe
First Name : Jane
Date of Birth: 12/12/2000

Year 2012-2013
Trimester 1
Col1 | Col2 | Col3
Trimester 2
Col1 | Col2 | Col3
...
Year 2013-2014
Trimester 1
Col1 | Col2 | Col3
Trimester 2
Col1 | Col2 | Col3
=

So she needs some way to turn the spreadsheet into the above *while keeping
data in different tabs* (one per year) since the list of students is
different every year.

Ideally, it should be doable with a spreadhseet (Excel or Calc) and some
programming-free tool, but Word can't handle more than one tab in a
spreadsheet. Like I said, she can't work with a database.

Incidently, this problem is very common since a lot of users rely on Excel
as poorman's database. I wonder how they all manage once they hit this type
of issue.

Thank you.

2013-08-08 Thread Gilles
Thanks but it's not in read-only mode:

http://postimg.org/image/qzs97o3tf/

The issue is that some fields don't work properly, and once, for some
reason, LO displays the green squares around a field, it's not obvious how
to get back to normal.

As to why such a big company doesn't simply ask one of their web developer
to write an HTML form to handle this is beyond me... but it's consistent
with the rest of the issues I had with them. Last time I order from them.

Anyhow, thanks for the help.

Thanks Brian. I'll play with sections the next time I need some pages to be
formated with either one or two columns.

[libreoffice-users] [4.0.1.2/Win/Writer] Printing labels with odd sheets?

2013-03-18 Thread Gilles
Hello

I bought the following sheets of labels that have some pitches/margins:

http://bagofiles.free.fr/libreoffice.labels/microapp.labels.sheet.jpg

I tried Writers' File New Labels, and used user-specific settings, but
the preview doesn't look like what I expected:

http://bagofiles.free.fr/libreoffice.labels/libreoffice.labels.params.jpg
http://bagofiles.free.fr/libreoffice.labels/libreoffice.labels.output.jpg

Before I ditch the pack and find some labels that have no pitch/margins, has
someone successfully printed labels with LO that look like that?

Thank you.

Is it easier just to use a table?  Each label corresponding to 1 cell.
Perhaps rows and columns between printable labels in order to create a
 margin?

Thanks for the idea, but is there a way to tell LO to print a table that
will cover the whole page, each cell having a specific width and height?

Otherwise, it's going to take forever to get it right.

May be this FAQ will be helpful

Thanks but I did read the FAQ before posting here.

The issue is that I don't know how to tell LO that the sheet has outer
borders, but no borders between labels themselves (3 columns, 7 rows).

I tried setting Horizontal Pitch and Vertical Pitch to 0 and
Width/Height to the label's size, but LO won't let me (sets HZ/VT Pitch to
0,10cm).

Before I spend more time on this, does someone know if LO is able to handle
sheets that look like the one I bought, namely those that have outer borders
but none between the labels proper?

What I mean, is that LO can't seem to support labels that have no margins
between them:

Thanks all for the input. I'll give it a try, and if it doesn't work, I'll
just look for label sheets that have no margins at all.

I have just laid out a custom label like yours and it seems to preview
correct. I assumed an A4 sheet and centalised label positions.

Thanks, looks good. Apparently, it's not a table: How did you create a new
style with the required columns + rows?

[libreoffice-users] [4.0.0.3/Windows/Write] How to resume single-column?

2013-03-15 Thread Gilles
Hello

I need to format the first couple of pages in two columns, insert a manual
page break, and then have the remainder of the document formated as
single-column.

After adding a manual page break, the focus is on the new page, formatted as
two columns; I select Format Columns 1 column, but LibreOffice is stuck
with two columns.

Any idea?

Thank you.

Problem solved: I selected the new page improperly formated as two columns,
told LO to format it as three columns, then formated it back to one column,
and presto. Weird.

[libreoffice-users] [4.0/Win/Writer] Fold/unfold sections?

2013-02-22 Thread Gilles
Hello

It looks like Writer is unable to do this, but I wanted to double-check.

When writing longer pieces of text, it's handy to be able to folder other
sections so that I only browse through the section I'm working it, à la
NotePad++
http://screenshots.en.sftcdn.net/en/scrn/31000/31829/notepad-21.jpg .

Can Writer be made to fold/unfold sections, eg. fold all Heading2 sections?

Thank you.

[libreoffice-users] Re: [4.0/Win/Writer] Fold/unfold sections?

2013-02-22 Thread Gilles
Thanks for the tip. I read the docs, but it didn't display the structure of
the document (H1 = Main title, H2 = Chapter1, Chapter 2, etc.)

Anyway, it doesn't look like what I had in need, which was to actually
fold/unfold the contents of the document within the Writer window itself.

I wonder what writers use to write long documents. Maybe some word processor
in Mac does this.

Thank you.
