I am thoroughly convinced that styles are superior to plainly marking up each section as you go along. However, I am finding it _very_ difficult to get into the habit of actually using styles because there does not seem to be a way to look at a document and see at a glance which styles are applied

that ODF is XML but I do not have the resources to write a parser, in any case, I would prefer that the tool be part of OOo where I could switch views at a glance. I am not sure you can do it exactly this way. But perhaps Navigator (CTRL+F5) can help you a great deal in view the headings.
