Re: [Users] big problem with ovirt on Fedora 19

Hi Hetz,
you can use dnsmasq as your local DNS server. I myself use it on several
scenarios.

 Hi,

Many posts on the net suggest that if you want to install oVirt on a
single machine and you don't have (or don't want to setup) a DNS server,
you can stick your host name in /etc/hosts with the IP of the server and be
 done with this issue.

Unfortunately, this trick won't work any more as the engine-setup script
uses nslookup and nslookup ignores anything in /etc/hosts

So right now I have a Fedora 19 and I cannot even install oVirt latest.

 Any help?

There is a bug I opened about this:
 https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=985168

 Thanks,
 Hetz

Subject: [Users] oVirt engine report and dwh in 3.2

 Hello,
updated my oVirt 3.2 beta all-in-one to 3.2 final.

 Then
 # yum install ovirt-engine-reports
 # ovirt-engine-dwh-setup
 # ovirt-engine-reports-setup

 All seems successful.

The first time that I access the reports link from firefox I get a
window about security and certificate, but where I cannot accept the
certificate itself (confirm exception button remains greyed out)
 and
 so can't go ahead.

I'm forced to kill firefox from a console and restart it because if I
go in details window for certificate it spans all over my vertical
screen length. Also with Alt+drag I cannot highlight the cancel
 button to exit the window.

Now when I click on reports link I get as in pre-3.2

Page: Reports is not a leagal.

 My databases now

[Users] HA wirh oVirt

2013-02-13 Thread Alexandre Santos
Hi all,
I've been asked for a HA solution and I've been testing oVirt with a
NFS NAS and 2 hosts where I run 2 VMs that have a balancer at their
front, each on a different host. Now I'm thinking on the possibility
of a host malfunction and my question is: is there automatic migration
of the VMs that are running on this host to the other host?
Sorry if it is a silly question :-)

Thank you to Shahar for your advice about the MAC address check.
I tried that, restarted the engine, but i failed the same.
That should work..., if not its a bug

I also tried Itamar's advice but here is what's happening:
 - In the import windows, I select the VM, the system finds out the
 destination cluster and storage.
 - I then chekc the option Clone All VMs : the suffix option
 appears, pre-filled with _Copy.
 - I already used it and it was working fine. This time, when
validating with OK, the Suffix field gets colored into yellow
 and I can not validate.
 - I tried to change its content to something else but it has no effect.
 - Of course, I already spent some times grepping the logs file
searching for the MAC, but did not find anything obvious.
 - When the yellow border appears, nothing special is showing in the logs.

So here, oVirt is trying to tell me something, but what?
This is probably UI validation that failed to present the text.
Try to rename the xxx_Copy to xxx_Copy2 or any other name that is not in use.

Hi,
I'm getting also this error about duplicate MAC. I quoted error
because I searched for this MAC on all my VMs and did not find another
MAC being the same. What I've seen is that if the original MAC ends
with :01, the new one (clone) has a MAC that ends with :02.
I then start this new cloned VM and it works fine - after changing the
MAC value on the network config files on the VM's SO.

I already tried that, with no benefit.

I spent some more time on that and here what I found :

 * 1 *
When trying to import a VM by cloning it and using a suffix (whatever
suffix), I get NO error in log (neither on the manager, nor in the nodes),
but I'm stuck with the yellow border around the suffix field, and no way to
 validate my choice.

 * 2 *
I succeed in importing directly the VM by NOT checking the Clone All VMs
box, and by checking the Collapse All snapshots box. Indeed, I found in
engine.log an error about snapshots, an INSERT was tried into the database
with a broken constrain key and a '00..blah.blah.blah'
 snapshot reference.
Checking this box allowed a correct import of the VM.

 Conclusion :
 - Point 1 : I consider it would be nice to inform the user about what's
wrong, at least in the log files
 - Point 2 : When not checking to collapse snapshot box, the import is
failing with an error speaking about a duplicated MAC address.
 This is wrong.

Thank you to Shahar, Itamar and Alex who answered.

Hi again,
I simply looked on every VM listed on the UI for that MAC, not
directly on the database. That was how I discovered that the MAC was
changed when moving it to the export storage,

 Hi,

Ok I can do that, but how do I do that on boot? I could modify the iso but I
don't have the normal grub bootscreen so I can edit it.

I tried replacing the CDLABEL parameter in the kernel arguments but this
 gets me nowhere.

You state it's a bug on Fedora, but from a user perspective that doesn't
matter it just doesn't work properly. And this hasn't worked for nearly
 a year now.

An installer where you have to manually enter parameters on boot in a
limited time window (a couple of seconds otherwise you have reboot again)
 doesn't make us admins happy.

Hi Gianluca,
I once faced the same situation when I tried to boot a VM with an ISO

could see the error messages about the corrupted iso.

Re: [Users] Change locale for VNC console

2013-01-03 Thread Alexandre Santos
As Itamar once explained to me (I had the same problem):

you can change the vnc keyboard layout via the config tool
(VncKeyboardLayout option) globally.
still missing as a per vm option (though you can easily do this via a
hook if you need it per vm)

Alex

2013/1/3 Frank Wall fw...@inotronic.de:
 Hi,

when using oVirt 3.1 the locale for all VNC consoles defaults to en_US.
This is OK if the user is using the same locale. But with any other
locale on the client side (fr_FR, de_DE), the keyboard is really
scrambled. As a result the VNC console is somewhat useless for an
 affected user.

 So my questions are...

 1. How do I change the locale for VNC, either globally or for each VM?
 2. Will there be an REST API call to configure the locale of the console?

Wow, that was quick, thanks for the hint! Changing the value was easy:

 # engine-config -g VncKeyboardLayout
 VncKeyboardLayout: en-us version: general
 # engine-config -s VncKeyboardLayout=de --cver=general
 # engine-config -g VncKeyboardLayout
 VncKeyboardLayout: de version: general

I did a quick test: shutdown a VM and power-on again.
But unfortunately the VNC console keyboard is still odd.
Do you know when this setting will be activated? Do I have
to do something with the oVirt nodes for the new setting
 to be enabled?

Actually, this was the first one I've tried, but engine-config wants a

'de_DE' is not a valid value for type String. Valid values are [ar, da, de,

Re: [Users] Auto-start vms on boot?

2012-12-09 Thread Alexandre Santos
Hi,
I'm not involved on the ovirt development, but here are my thoughts:
1. oVirt makes sense on a datacenter scenario, where there is always a HA
management server that takes care of everything, including the management
of all VMs state.
2. If you want such a tight relation between the host and the VMs running
on it, you don't need oVirt, just plain host virtualization, like the one
that comes on every linux distro with virt-manager.There you can install
and manage the VMs on a single host, forcing them to stop or start on host
shutdown or boot.
3. This is what I've been doing myself. Virt-manager can manage all hosts
running kvm/qemu but don't have this datacenter approach, where you store
your VMs on a SAN/iSCSI and you run you VMs on diskless hosts and can
migrate them as you which, for instance.

If the oVirt developers think that i?m missing something or that I'm wrong,
please come and correct me :-)

So when a host starts the engine starts and then loops assigned virtual
machines. While looping the virtual machines checs its auto-start
property. If it's set to true it starts the virtual machine.

Not sure if what I am describing has an easy implementation with current
oVirt architecture. Any comments from people who might understand better
 oVirt architecture on this use-case?

I think the hosts should rely the least possible on the management server.

my concern is how to make sure engine only starts VMs it should in this
 case.

just to be clear, we still don't have the behavior i described. I just

in the use case i described, we would be adding a 'start/stop VM with

the one i'm familiar with is to tie the VM life cycle to a

 task
(say, IDS), is always starting when the host starts, and will be
automatically shutdown when host is moved to maintenance.
so only relevant for VMs which are pinned to a host.

Congratulations!

Alex

2012/11/30 Dave Neary dne...@redhat.com

 Hi everyone,

The new oVirt website is now live!

   http://www.ovirt.org

We have made some changes to the infrastructure (the website is now
running on MediaWiki: http://www.mediawiki.org on Red Hat's Platform as a
Service offering OpenShift: https://openshift.redhat.com) and also to the
look and feel. There is a new theme, designed and laid out by Garrett
Lesage, some new content to discover, and best of all, since the entire
website is now a wiki, it will be much easier to maintain over time.

We have been careful to ensure that all of the old website links redirect
to appropriate pages on the new site. If you find any dead links, or
redirects which do not make sense, please let us know! And as the site has
had limited exposure up to this point, we are happy to hear your feedback
on things you like, and things we can improve.

Thank you all for your support, assistance and understanding throughout
 this process!

 Regards,
 Dave.

I *think* this is a feature of being registered to ovirt-engine. Once
you are registered, you can't change the network through the TUI
 anymore.

If you're not registered with Engine, please elaborate a bit and I'll
try to figure out what is going on.

What you're saying makes sense. The problem I had was that my node was
booting with DHCP and the IP changed. When I got to the engine / web

the hostname... On the TUI I can't change the IP because I'm registered but
can't change it also on the engine. Is this correct?

Hi Cristian,
I don't know what ovirt is doing but if the final file is a raw image, you
can shrink it with qemu-img and transform it in a qcow2.
What I think was on the head of who implemented this is that you export a
VM to a NAS that has normally Teras of space, so it is more compatible to
save it in raw format. My 2 cents :-)

Try to mount it on the host, if you're using a ovirt-node, it's on

but I had to change /etc/nfsmount.conf in the following line:

 ** **

 Hi,

 ** **

 just created a test environment, including ovirt-engine 3.1 +
 ovirt-node-iso-2.5.5-0.1.fc17 + qnap iscsi + qnap nas (NFSv3).

 iSCSI connection is working fine.
When connecting to Export/ISO Domain via webgui the progress is taking
 forever (waited ~ 10 mins)

 ** **

Back to console I first tried to connect from ovirt-engine to nfs storage
 of our NAS:

 showmount -e 172.16.101.95 -
 Export list for 172.16.101.95:

 /NFS-ISO01

 /Export-NFS01

 /…

 mount -t nfs 172.16.101.95:/Export-NFS01 /mnt/nastest/

 mount -

 172.16.101.95:/Export-NFS01/ on /mnt/nastest type nfs
 (rw,relatime,vers=3,rsize=32768,wsize=32768,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,

 mountaddr=172.16.101.95,mountvers=3,mountport=56272,mountproto=udp,local_lock=none,addr=172.16.101.95)

Touching a file on mountpoint is working, too.

 ** **

 On ovirt-node:

 showmount -e 172.16.101.95-
 Export list for 172.16.101.95:

 /NFS-ISO01

 /Export-NFS01

 /…

 mount -t nfs 172.16.101.95:/Export-NFS01 /mnt/nastest/ -
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking.***
 *

mount.nfs: Either use '-o nolock' to keep locks local, or start statd.

mount.nfs: an incorrect mount option was specified

 mount -t nfs 172.16.101.95:/Export-NFS01 /mnt/nastest/ -o nolock -
 working (also for vdsm)!

There’s no firewall between NAS and node (except node fw)

 rpcbind isn’t installed on node:
 http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/4720/

It seems the package isn’t needed anymore by this post in gerrit?

 ** **

 Well, how to proceed here?
Am I getting my wires crossed here or just missed a configuration?

 ** **

 Thx in advance!

 ** **

 Best,

 Sven.

The solution was to change the kernel boot parameters when installing from
the CDROM.

Basically, root=live:/dev/sr0 did the trick. After rebooting, the USB had
all the links on dev, specially /dev/mapper/live-rw that was missing on the
prevous install.

as said in another part of this thread Node can be updated through oVirt
 Engine.
But you can also update an existing Node by booting the newer image
using PXE, USB or ISO to update an installed Node.

 not yum.
ovirt-node has a special upgrade process.
if you deploy the new ovirt-node on the engine, it should detect the new
version and allow you to upgrade the node from engine.

You can try going into the nfs share manually and

 chown 36:36 *

i.e., if your iso domain is at /export/iso:

 chown 36:36 /export/iso/uuid/images/uuid/*

Note that the uuid is different in both cases above, and for each

Not sure if this will help or not, but it's worth a shot.

After messing around with permissions 640 644, 777 and changing
groups, every time I clicked on the images tab my whole storage
would go offline, so I've now destroyed by old ISO domain and
re-created it with these exact steps.

Just tried destroying my ISO domain and added a new one, but still the
 images don't show.

 mv iso-domain iso-domain-old
 mkdir iso-domain
 chown -R 36:36 iso-domain
 ls -al
 drwxr-xr-x. 3 vdsm vdsm 4096 Oct 16 17:37 iso-domain

In ovirt I went to storages -- NEW domain, and added it as NFS ISO,
it added, I then activated it and then uploaded a small ISO image, but
 still the image doesn't show.

 On my host I ran...
 vdsClient -s 0 getIsoList `vdsClient -s 0 getConnectedStoragePoolsList`
-- ISO list with proper permissions only ---

I see that on my host the uid and gid of 36 are vdsm:kvm not sure if
 this is somehow related?

This is what I see in my server.log when I click on images now...
(note that my storage stays online now though since re-creating)

I've found out now that another technician accidentally deleted my

I have no backup of the DB because I was still in the process of
setting them up and wasn't aware he was going to be installing onto
  this server.

I currently have 6 guests that are in a shutdown state because of a
power failure over the weekend. It's using FC storage, only the db
  seems to be missing.

Is there anything I can do to recover from this disaster?

  Hi
Is this a new installation or one that was upgraded?
If it is an upgrade IIRC we are backing up the database prior to the
upgrade so maybe it is possible to search for this backup and getting an
 older version of your DB.

If the DB is deleted and you have no backups you will probably have to
 reinstall.
I recommend to backup your DB on a daily basis using our backup.sh
script , you can use a simple cron job for that.

  Hi guys,

I've got what looks like a huge issue after a power failure.

In my server.log I'm seeing Caused by:
org.postgresql.util.PSQLException: FATAL: database engine does not

  Hi Eli,

Thanks for coming back to me.

Unfortunately it wasn't an upgrade or installation, just raw db files
were removed(rm -f /var/lib/pgsql/*) mid last week, and then there was
power failure over the weekend and everything shut down and then
  refused to start.

I've tried running extundelete but it says the space has been
re-allocated for the files under /var/lib/pgsql

The images should in theory still be fine because they are stored on a
FC SAN, but I now need to somehow access the .ovf files, back them up,
re-install the ovirt-engine from scratch re-initialise the storage and
  then import the .ovf files.

Anyone know how to access the .ovf files without having an engine? I
can access the LUNS directly, but can't mount them because of the
  filesystem type being unknown.

  Thanks.

  Regards.

  Neil.

What I would like to know is if this sanlock permission issue is within the

I managed to install the new oVirt Node on a 8 GB USB Pen. I created the

Hi,
yesterday I tried the new oVirt Node 2.5.3. I tried installing it without
the quiet flag but no luck. It hanged again and the kernel didn't show any
error on console (tty2).
Later will test without the rhgh flag.

BTW, now the hostname works on 2.5.3 :-) The network configuration is still
tricky... sometimes I have an Apply sometimes only a Back choice.

2012/10/9 Alexandre Santos santosa...@gmail.com

 It's working now :-)

 Thanks a lot all!

P.S. I haven't tried installing it on my SATA disk because I have there a
Local Node already running but I'm going to try again on another one to see
if I can send to you the error log.

Glad it worked the second time. There should be 4 partitions on the
 disk.

Partition 1 is for UEFI or bios_boot depending on your machine type.
Partition 2 and Partition 3 are Root and RootBackup. So seeing a
RootBackup is correct. Not seeing a Root is incorrect. If you rebooted
the host in the middle of the install, or if the install hung for some
reason, I can see that situation happening and see it working after
 uninstall/install.

I can't activate Networking because I have that no
  hostname error

You can't activate networking at all? That is news to me. The node
should work perfectly fine with or without a FQDN.

Yes, I've also seen the hostname error. And I've also seen

Is there any error displayed when kernel hangs at 25%? And it can take
some time to pass the 25% (up to ~2min or so).

No, I think it's a kernel hang because the lights on the keyboard halt and
I can't change to tty2, etc.. I even changed to tty2 and waited to see if
there were some errors but nothing. I've read that tty8 was the logging
console but no luck also.
BTW, I tried with an IDE disk and the result was the same.

If I use a 8 GB usb pen-drive instead of the SATA disk, the
installation comes to an end and I reboot but then I get some error
about not getting /dev/mapper/by-name/Root and the boot fails to a
  dracut shell.
  Any ideas?

In the dracut shell, could you run blkid and post the results?

I noticed that the USB Disk was named RootBackup instead of Root... I then
rebooted and chose uninstall and then installed oVirt Node from scratch and
now it worked.
I can't activate Networking because I have that no hostname error
mentioned in another post. I think it's related to that...

 Mh, okay.
Could you try booting without the rhgb and quiet kernel arguments. I
hope that some errors will be displayed on the screen so we get an idea
 about the problem.

Yes, I've also seen the hostname error. And I've also seen some problems
 with the rootfs lately.
Could you provide a screenshot/dump of the console with that error?

Ok! I'll send them as soon as possible.

[Users] Run Once won't change boot sequence

2012-10-08 Thread Alexandre Santos
Hello again,
to install my VMs, I create them without CDROM and booting firstly from the
HD. Then I go and choose Run Once and choose the ISO I want to use and
boot from CDROM, on boot options. After installing the OS, I reboot and the
first boot is again the CDROM. I have to shutdown the VM so the
configuration chosen with HD being the first boot option is again the
default.

This sounds like the VM was just rebooted after installation. The boot
order is kept from the time you say Run Once until the VM is shutdown
completely. A reboot keeps it the same.

One option to solve this is to set the HD as the first boot device and
the CDRom as the second. Then, when it boots the first time, since
there is nothing installed, it will boot from CD, then on reboot, it
 will boot from HD.

You could also detach the cd from the VM before rebooting.

you can change the vnc keyboard layout via the config tool
 (VncKeyboardLayout option) globally.
still missing as a per vm option (though you can easily do this via a hook
if you need it per vm)
