Re: [Users] big problem with ovirt on Fedora 19
Hi Hetz, you can use dnsmasq as your local DNS server. I myself use it on several scenarios. Alex 2013/7/17 Hetz Ben Hamo h...@hetz.biz * * Hi, Many posts on the net suggest that if you want to install oVirt on a single machine and you don't have (or don't want to setup) a DNS server, you can stick your host name in /etc/hosts with the IP of the server and be done with this issue. Unfortunately, this trick won't work any more as the engine-setup script uses nslookup and nslookup ignores anything in /etc/hosts So right now I have a Fedora 19 and I cannot even install oVirt latest. Any help? There is a bug I opened about this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=985168 Thanks, Hetz ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users ___ Users mailing list Users@ovirt.org http://lists.ovirt.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Indeed, I found in engine.log an error about snapshots, an INSERT was tried into the database with a broken constrain key and a '00..blah.blah.blah' snapshot reference. Checking this box allowed a correct import of the VM. Conclusion : - Point 1 : I consider it would be nice to inform the user about what's wrong, at least in the log files - Point 2 : When not checking to collapse snapshot box, the import is failing with an error speaking about a duplicated MAC address. Re: [Users] Auto-start vms on boot?
Hi, I'm not involved on the ovirt development, but here are my thoughts: 1. oVirt makes sense on a datacenter scenario, where there is always a HA management server that takes care of everything, including the management of all VMs state. 2. If you want such a tight relation between the host and the VMs running on it, you don't need oVirt, just plain host virtualization, like the one that comes on every linux distro with virt-manager.There you can install and manage the VMs on a single host, forcing them to stop or start on host shutdown or boot. 3. This is what I've been doing myself. Virt-manager can manage all hosts running kvm/qemu but don't have this datacenter approach, where you store your VMs on a SAN/iSCSI and you run you VMs on diskless hosts and can migrate them as you which, for instance. If the oVirt developers think that i?m missing something or that I'm wrong, please come and correct me :-) Alex 2012/12/9 Itamar Heim ih...@redhat.com On 12/09/2012 02:55 PM, Adrian Gibanel wrote: This is how I see it: Engine should have an offline database of its assigned hosts and their state (With state I mean properties. Not sure if what I am describing has an easy implementation with current oVirt architecture. Any comments from people who might understand better oVirt architecture on this use-case? I think the hosts should rely the least possible on the management server. my concern is how to make sure engine only starts VMs it should in this case. --**--** *De: *Itamar Heim ih...@redhat.com *Para: *Adrian Gibanel adrian.giba...@btactic.com *CC: *users users@ovirt.org *Enviados: *Viernes, 7 de Diciembre 2012 19:39:26 *Asunto: *Re: [Users] Auto-start vms on boot? I just stated the only use case i'm familiar for a similar requirement. (pinning a VM to host is done via the edit vm dialog). question on your use case - how would the engine know if the admin just shutdown a VM manually from a VM which should be auto started (should we add such a checkbox). in the use case i described, we would be adding a 'start/stop VM with host' for a VM pinned to a host. Marking a VM as H.A. would do the trick? Any special reason why there isn't and standard way of marking which vms should be auto-started at boot? Just wanted to hear your thoughts before filling an RFE. Thank you. what exactly is your use case? the one i'm familiar with is to tie the VM life cycle to a specific host, so a VM which is pinned to a specific host for a certain task (say, IDS), is always starting when the host starts, and will be automatically shutdown when host is moved to maintenance. so only relevant for VMs which are pinned to a host. -- http://www.btactic.com/***Adrián Gibanel* I.T. Congratulations! Alex 2012/11/30 Dave Neary dne...@redhat.com Hi everyone, The new oVirt website is now live! http://www.ovirt.org We have made some changes to the infrastructure (the website is now running on MediaWiki: http://www.mediawiki.org on Red Hat's Platform as a Service offering OpenShift: https://openshift.redhat.com) and also to the look and feel. There is a new theme, designed and laid out by Garrett Lesage, some new content to discover, and best of all, since the entire website is now a wiki, it will be much easier to maintain over time. We have been careful to ensure that all of the old website links redirect to appropriate pages on the new site. If you find any dead links, or redirects which do not make sense, please let us know! And as the site has had limited exposure up to this point, we are happy to hear your feedback on things you like, and things we can improve. Hi Cristian, I don't know what ovirt is doing but if the final file is a raw image, you can shrink it with qemu-img and transform it in a qcow2. What I think was on the head of who implemented this is that you export a VM to a NAS that has normally Teras of space, so it is more compatible to save it in raw format. Thanks. Regards. Neil Wilson. Hi Eli, Thanks for coming back to me. Unfortunately it wasn't an upgrade or installation, just raw db files were removed(rm -f /var/lib/pgsql/*) mid last week, and then there was power failure over the weekend and everything shut down and then refused to start. I've tried running extundelete but it says the space has been re-allocated for the files under /var/lib/pgsql The images should in theory still be fine because they are stored on a FC SAN, but I now need to somehow access the .ovf files, back them up, re-install the ovirt-engine from scratch re-initialise the storage and then import the .ovf files. Anyone know how to access the .ovf files without having an engine? I can access the LUNS directly, but can't mount them because of the filesystem type being unknown. Thanks. Regards. If I use a 8 GB usb pen-drive instead of the SATA disk, the installation comes to an end and I reboot but then I get some error about not getting /dev/mapper/by-name/Root and the boot fails to a dracut shell. Any ideas? In the dracut shell, could you run blkid and post the results? I noticed that the USB Disk was named RootBackup instead of Root... I then rebooted and chose uninstall and then installed oVirt Node from scratch and now it worked. Glad it worked the second time. There should be 4 partitions on the disk. Partition 1 is for UEFI or bios_boot depending on your machine type. Partition 2 and Partition 3 are Root and RootBackup. So seeing a RootBackup is correct. Not seeing a Root is incorrect. If you rebooted the host in the middle of the install, or if the install hung for some reason, I can see that situation happening and see it working after uninstall/install. I can't activate Networking because I have that no hostname error mentioned in another post. I think it's related to that... You can't activate networking at all? That is news to me. The node should work perfectly fine with or without a FQDN. Yes, I've also seen the hostname error. And I've also seen some problems with the rootfs lately. I even changed to tty2 and waited to see if there were some errors but nothing. I've read that tty8 was the logging console but no luck also. BTW, I tried with an IDE disk and the result was the same. Mh, okay. Could you try booting without the rhgb and quiet kernel
Re: [Users] ovirt-node install hangs
It's working now :-) Thanks a lot all! Alex P.S. I haven't tried installing it on my SATA disk because I have there a Local Node already running but I'm going to try again on another one to see if I can send to you the error log. 2012/10/8 Mike Burns mbu...@redhat.com On Mon, 2012-10-08 at 09:54 +0100, Alexandre Santos wrote: 2012/10/8 Fabian Deutsch fabi...@redhat.com Am Montag, den 08.10.2012, 09:24 +0100 schrieb Alexandre Santos: 2012/10/8 Fabian Deutsch fabi...@redhat.com Hey, Am Sonntag, den 07.10.2012, 15:29 +0100 schrieb Alexandre Santos: Hi, I'm trying to install the ovirt-node iso image on a SATA disk and when it gets to the screen where it shows 25% completed the kernel hangs. I hope that some errors will be displayed on the screen so we get an idea about the problem. Have you seen these issues with the 2.5.2 build? Or only master branch builds? Could you provide a screenshot/dump of the console with that error? - fabian Ok! I'll send them as soon as possible. [Users] Run Once won't change boot sequence
Hello again, to install my VMs, I create them without CDROM and booting firstly from the HD. Then I go and choose Run Once and choose the ISO I want to use and boot from CDROM, on boot options. After installing the OS, I reboot and the first boot is again the CDROM. I have to shutdown the VM so the configuration chosen with HD being the first boot option is again the default. Ok! Will do that next time :-) Thanks a lot! I have to shutdown the VM so the configuration chosen with HD being the first boot option is again the default. This sounds like the VM was just rebooted after installation. The boot order is kept from the time you say Run Once until the VM is shutdown completely. A reboot keeps it the same. One option to solve this is to set the HD as the first boot device and the CDRom as the second. Then, when it boots the first time, since there is nothing installed, it will boot from CD, then on reboot, it will boot from HD. You could also detach the cd from the VM before rebooting.
