[ovirt-users] Re: New Issue - Ovirt Status shows '?' or Down for all elements

2020-04-02 Thread Mark Steele
As a followup - is it possible to move the hosted-engine to another HV
manually? Meaning we shutdown the hosted-engine VM, and copy it's XML to
another HV and fire it up over there where libvirt IS running?

If that is possible, where do we find the live / running XML files on a
host?

Mark

More information:

When we attempt to start it, it complains about expired certs and fails.
Any ideas on this new development?

[ovirt-users] New Issue - Ovirt Status shows '?' or Down for all elements

Yesterday we had a storage crash that caused our hosted engine to stop and
not auto-restart. We manually restarted it and this morning, all elements
are showing a status of either question mark '?' or a red down chevron.

We are running version oVirt Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6.

We are chasing it down and see this in the log:

2020-04-01 10:15:53,060 WARN
[org.ovirt.engine.core.vdsbroker.VdsManager]

continuing

Any insight into what might be causing this or the fix would be appreciated.

Thank you all!

We were able to locate it on HV-02 and restart it using virsh.

This is how we got virsh working on that HV:

Virsh Authorization
If Virsh is set for Auth
If attempting to use any virsh commands and get auth request you will
either need the auth credentials or to create your own.Example:
$ virsh list
Please enter your authentication name: root
Please enter your password:
error: Failed to reconnect to the hypervisor
error: no valid connection
error: authentication failed: authentication failed
Solution
$ saslpasswd2 -a libvirt

[ovirt-users] Hosted Engine stalled and unable to restart

2020-03-31 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

We are on an older version (3.x - cannot be specific as I cannot get my
ovirt hosted engine up).

We experienced a storage failure earlier this evening - the hosted engine
was originally installed with this storage domain although we have moved
all VM's and disks off of it.

The storage was restored and all the VM's are now running, but the ovirt
engine is not pinging and is unreachable.

I have attempted to locate it on my HV's using 'virsh list --all' but only
one of those is taking my credentials - all the others fail to authenticate.

Is there a way to locate what the credentials are on each HV since the
default is not working? Additionally, is there any other way to locate the
hosted engine and restart it directly from a HV?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

[ovirt-users] mount to removed storage domain on node with HostedEngine

2019-10-03 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

oVirt Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6

We recently removed the Data (Master) storage domain from our ovirt cluster
and replaced it with another. All is working great. When looking at the old
storage device I noticed that one of our nodes still has an NFS connection
to it.

Looking at the results for 'mount' I see two mounts to the node in question
(192.168.64.15):

192.168.64.15:/nfs-share/ovirt-store/hosted-engine on

/etc/fstab has no entry for these so I assume they are left over from when
the storage domain existed.

Is it safe to 'umount' these mounts or is there a hook I may not be aware
of? Is there another way of removing this from the node via that OVM?

None of the other nodes in the cluster have this mount. This node is not
the SPM.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best regards,

2019-09-17 Thread Mark Steele
I was not using the uploader - I have the new domain active and attached
now.

I am attempting to upload the iso using the following command:

engine-iso-uploader --iso-domain=phl-iso-03 upload ./windows-server-2012.iso

Unfortunately I keep getting this error:

Uploading, please wait...
ERROR: mount.nfs: Connection timed out

I think I see the issue now - the ISO domain is attached properly - however
I was simply copying ISO files into that directory - I think I have to use
a tool to upload the ISO's - is that correct?

[ovirt-users] Changing ISO domains

2019-09-17 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

I recently removed our ISO domain from out cluster (oVirt Engine Version:
3.5.0.1-1.el6) because it was on a storage location we no longer want to
use.

I am now not clear on how to add the new ISO domain in. I created a new ISO
domain type via storage and pointed to an NFS share on the new storage,
however it does not behave as I anticipated (I cannot see ISO's when
creating new VM's)

I suspect I missed a step - how are new ISO domains added to a cluster?

Mark

OK - so if I understand correctly - now that everything is moved off of the
Master, I can put it into maintenance mode and this will cause a new Master
election - am I prompted for the new master or does it select another
available data domain?

Thanks

[ovirt-users] How to change Master Data Storage Domain

2019-09-11 Thread Mark Steele
Good morning,

I have a Storage Domain that I would like to retire and move that role to a
new storage domain. Both Domains exist on my current Data Center and I have
moved all disks from the existing Data (Master) domain to the new Data
Domain.

The only thing that is still associated with the Data (Master) domain are
two OVF_STORE items:

Alias
Virtual Size
Actual Size
Allocation Policy
Storage Domain
Storage Type
Creation Date
Attached To
Alignment
Status
Description
OVF_STORE
< 1 GB
< 1 GB
Preallocated

What is the procedure for moving / removing these items and 'promoting' the
other Data Domain to Master?

Our current version is:

oVirt Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6 (it's old but reliable)

Thank you Strahil,

The MTU appears to be set to 1500 according to 'ifconfig'.

It seems that our oVirt instance never exceeds 550Mbps aggregate traffic

[ovirt-users] Ethernet tools for VM's

2019-07-09 Thread Mark Steele
oVirt Enginge Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6 (yesI know it's old)

VM is running Ubuntu 18.04 with ovirt agent installed.

I'm attempting to get NIC information by running 'ethtool -i ens3' I get
the following:

root@myserver:~# ethtool -i ens3
driver: virtio_net
version: 1.0.0
firmware-version:
expansion-rom-version:
bus-info: :00:03.0
supports-statistics: no
supports-test: no
supports-eeprom-access: no
supports-register-dump: no
supports-priv-flags: no
root@myserver:~#

and when I run 'ethtool ens3' I get the following:

root@myserver:~# ethtool ens3
Settings for ens3:
Supported ports: [ ]
Supported link modes: Not reported
Supported pause frame use: No
Supports auto-negotiation: No
Supported FEC modes: Not reported
Advertised link modes: Not reported
Advertised pause frame use: No
Advertised auto-negotiation: No
Advertised FEC modes: Not reported
Speed: Unknown!
Duplex: Unknown! (255)
Port: Other
PHYAD: 0
Transceiver: internal
Auto-negotiation: off
Link detected: yes

This is not what I expected. Is there another tool I should be using to
display the information for ens3 on this server?

Best regards,

Nir,

Thank you for your email. We will go with option 2 (staying on 3.x).
Question - can you only have one ISO domain? Is that why I don't have the
option of creating a new ISO domain while there is one in the cluster?

Hello,

We are decommissioning a storage array and I would like to move the
existing ISO domain to another array. Is there a Move or Migration function
for ISO domains? I attempted to create a new ISO domain however that option
is not available in the drop down menu. We are running version 3.5.0.1-1.el6
(yes - I know it's old - but it works for us :-)

[ovirt-users] Moving to new storage questions

2018-10-09 Thread Mark Steele
Good morning,

We are in the process of moving our oVirt installation to a new storage
solution. We have been 'move'-ing VM disks to the new storage without
issue. We have several templates that use the old storage device - is there
an equivalent process for moving template disks to the new storage unit?

I see there is a 'copy' function in the template disk screen which creates
a disk in the new storage domain. Can I then remove the original disk image
from the original domain?

Best regards,

Mark

[ovirt-users] Libvirt import to oVirt 3.5?

2018-09-27 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

Is there a mechanism for importing VM's from a KEMU Libvirt host to oVirt
3.5?

I see there is an import menu item for import on 4.1 but not on my
installation of 3.5.

Best regards,

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to add Hosts to Cluster

2018-02-22 Thread Mark Steele
We have found a resolution to this issue which is a bit convoluted - and
still does not explain why this started in the first place. Once we have
prepped a HV server to be added (all the NIC's are ready, selinux,
networkmanager, firewalld, etc have been disabled, we have to do the
following:

yum install librbd1
rm /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo (yes... delete the base repo...)
vi /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Vault.repo
add the following:
 [vault]
 name=CentOS-$releasever - Extras

#mirrorlist=http://vault.centos.org/?release=$releasever=$basearch=extras
 baseurl=http://vault.centos.org/centos/7.0.1406/os/x86_64/
 gpgcheck=0
 gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-CentOS-7

vi /etc/yum.repos.d/ovirt-3.5-dependencies.repo
 edit baseurls as show below:
 [ovirt-3.5-glusterfs-epel]
name=GlusterFS is a clustered file-system capable of scaling to
several petabytes.

baseurl=https://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/old-releases/3.6/3.6.1/RHEL/epel-7/x86_64
 enabled=1
 skip_if_unavailable=1
 gpgcheck=0
 [ovirt-3.5-glusterfs-noarch-epel]
name=GlusterFS is a clustered file-system capable of scaling to
several petabytes.

baseurl=http://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/old-releases/3.6/3.6.1/RHEL/epel-7/noarch

#baseurl=http://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/LATEST/EPEL.repo/epel-$releasever/noarch
 enabled=1
 skip_if_unavailable=1
 gpgcheck=0

yum remove ovirt-release35
yum remove vdsm
yum remove libvirt

yum install ovirt-release35-002-1
yum install libvirt-1.1.1-29.el7
yum install vdsm-4.16.7-1.gitdb83943.el7

We can then successfully add the HV into the cluster.

This is using CentOS 7.0.1406 (Core) as the host OS and oVirt 3.5.0.1-1.el6

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask.

Is it possible that the HostedEngine became corrupted somehow and that is
preventing us from adding hosts?

Is creating a new hosted engine an option?

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to add Hosts to Cluster

2018-02-19 Thread Mark Steele
At this point I'm wondering if there is anyone in the community that
freelances and would be willing to provide remote support to resolve this
issue?

We are running with 1/2 our normal hosts, and not being able to add anymore
back into the cluster is a serious problem.

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to add Hosts to Cluster

2018-02-17 Thread Mark Steele
Yaniv,

I have one of my developers assisting me and we are continuing to run into
issues. This is a note from him:

Hi, I'm trying to add a host to ovirt, but I'm running into package
dependency problems. I have existing hosts that are working and integrated
properly, and inspecting those, I am able to match the packages between the
new host and the existing, but when I then try to add the new host to
ovirt, it fails on reinstall because it's trying to install packages that
are later versions. does the installation run list from ovirt-release35
002-1 have unspecified versions? The working hosts use libvirt-1.1.1-29,
and vdsm-4.16.7, but it's trying to install vdsm-4.16.30, which requires a
higher version of libvirt, at which point, the installation fails. is there
some way I can specify which package versions the ovirt install procedure
uses? or better yet, skip the package management step entirely?

Thank you Alex.

I guess the first step is to get my existing hosts back into the cluster.
I'm going to try to manually apply the patch that Yaniv sent over to see if
I can get them back in.

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to add Hosts to Cluster

2018-02-17 Thread Mark Steele
Thank you very much!

Question - is upgrading the ovirt installation a matter of just upgrading
the engine? Or are there changes that are pushed down to each host / vm?

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to put Host into Maintenance mode

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
So - to get this back on track - I was able to remove the host entirely
from HostedEngine using ovirt-shell - but now cannot add it back for the
same reason as not being able to add ANY hosts to this cluster (there is
another email thread on this):

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to add Hosts to Cluster

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
We are using CentOS Linux release 7.0.1406 (Core) and oVirt Engine
Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6

We have four other hosts that are running this same configuration already.
I took one host out of the cluster (forcefully) that was working and now it
will not add back in either - throwing the same SASL error.

We are looking at downgrading libvirt as I've seen that somewhere else - is
there another version of RH I should be trying? I have a host I can put it
on.

Re: [ovirt-users] Unable to put Host into Maintenance mode

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
Using the ovirt-shell, I find that there are no vms assigned to this host:

[oVirt shell (connected)]# list vms --query "host=hv-01"

So I'm now looking to see where the host is reporting back to the engine
that it has migrations in progress. Anyone know where to look for that?

Thanks!

[ovirt-users] Username / password for ovirt-shell

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

I'm not the original system architect of our Cluster and I'm not able to
locate any documentation regarding the username and password for our
ovirt-shell CLI.

Is there a config file on the HostedEngine that would point me in the right
direction?

Best regards,

[ovirt-users] Unable to add Hosts to Cluster

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
Hello all,

We recently had a network event where we lost access to our storage for a
period of time. The Cluster basically shut down all our VM's and in the
process we had three HV's that went offline and would not communicate
properly with the cluster.

We have since completely reinstalled CentOS on the hosts and attempted to
install them into the cluster with no joy. We've gotten to the point where
we generally get an error message in the web gui:

Stage: Misc Configuration
Host hv-ausa-02 installation failed. Command returned failure code 1 during
SSH session 'root@10.1.90.154'.

the following is what we are seeing in the messages log:

Re: [ovirt-users] Requirements for basic host

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
Thank you!

Now if I can just get past this failing to install into the cluster on
error code 1!

Seems to be some sort of authentication issue between the hosted engine and
the new server just at the end

I'll post some more information in a new email

[ovirt-users] Requirements for basic host

2018-02-16 Thread Mark Steele
Hello again,

I'm building a new host for my cluster and have a quick question about
required software for joining the host to my cluster.

In my notes from a previous colleague, I am instructed to do the following:

yum install http://resources.ovirt.org/pub/yum-repo/ovirt-release35.rpm
yum install ovirt-hosted-engine-setup
hosted-engine --deploy

We already have a HostedEngine running on another server in the cluster -
so do I need to install ovirt-hosted-engine-setup and then deploy it for
this server to join the cluster and operate properly?

As always - thank you for your time.

Thank you Edward,

I actually did find the offending IP - I was using a small range that was
already in use but not documented.

2018-02-15 Thread Mark Steele
Michal,

Thank you for the response.

- there are no qemu processes running
- the server has been rebooted several times
- the engine has been rebooted several times

The issue persists. I'm not sure where to look next.

migrated successfully. Consider manual intervention: stopping/migrating

[ovirt-users] ERROR - some other host already uses IP ###.###.###.###

2018-02-15 Thread Mark Steele
Good morning,

We had a storage crash early this morning that messed up a couple of our
ovirt hosts. Networking seemed to be the biggest issue. I have decided to
remove the bridge information in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and ip the
nics in order to re-import them into my ovirt installation (I have already
removed the hosts).

One of the NIC's refuses to come up and is generating the following error:

ERROR : [/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth] Error, some other
host (0C:C4:7A:5B:11:5C) already uses address ###.###.###.###.

When I ARP on this server, I do not see that Mac address - and none of my
other hosts are using it either. I'm not sure where to go next other than
completely reinstalling Centos on this server and starting over.

Ovirt version is oVirt Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6

OS version is

CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 (Core)

Thank you

Donny,

Thank you - I was able to go into the host and 'Confirm it was manually
shutdown' - this fenced the host and then put all the VM's into a down
state - from there I was able to move them.

Thank you for your quick response!

We lost one of our hosts this morning and all of the VM's in that host are
in a hung state with a '?' in their status.

The Host itself is powered off due to a failed backplane and is reporting
'Host hv-01 is not responding. It will stay in Connecting state for a grace
period of 136 seconds and after that an attempt to fence will be issued.' -
that message has been repeating every three minutes. We have tried to
manually power cycle the blade but that is not working.

We are running 3.5.0.1-1.el6

- is there a way to force that host to release it's VM's?
- is there a way to manually move the VM's?

The menu for the VM's only has 'Add' and 'Edit' available.

Best regards,

[ovirt-users] Storage Migration issues

2017-12-12 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

We have begun migrating VM boot disks from one Storage domain to another.
Both the storage domains are NFS and both are V3. The Ovirt instance is oVirt
Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6

I am shutting down the VM's prior to migration (not a live migration). When
the disks complete their move, I start the VM back up on the original host.
The hosts are all running either Ubuntu 14.04 LTS or 16.04 LTS

I have experienced the following two issues:

- when the VM's come back up, they are not mounting an external NFS mount
that is defined in /etc/fstab. The mount can be reinstated manually and
survives subsequent reboots - but every VM that has an external NFS mount
has this issue after migration

- VM's that have a docker instance running no longer respond to web
requests on the web server ports that the docker instance is running.

Any thoughts on why this would happen would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

[ovirt-users] Preventing VM's from starting on specific Hosts

2017-09-25 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

We've added two new hosts to our Ovirt 3.5.0.1 installation and want to
restrict which VM's can start on it - specifically we do not any VM's to be
able to auto select these two hosts.

How do I prevent VM's from starting on these two HV's without specifically
tying every VM to a host?

Best regards,

[ovirt-users] Excluding Hosts from 'use any host' assignment

2017-09-19 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

We have recently added two new hosts to our Ovirt cluster and I would like
to exclude them from accepting any virtual machines starting on them unless
the VM configuration is set to start from one of those two hosts
specifically.

I am not clear if this can be accomplished from the web interface and am
looking for guidance.

[ovirt-users] Adding host for the first time - Power Management?

2017-09-08 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

We have an existing 4 Host Ovirt 3.5 installation. I am adding two more HP
Gen9 Blades to the configuration. I looked at how the power management is
setup up in Ovirt for the first four blades and it appears to be configured
for ilo4 using a user account that I cannot find documentation for anywhere
within my infrastructure.

Questions:

- is this user / password defined on the blade somewhere (perhaps like an
IPMI setup)?
- is anyone familiar with where I set this up on an HP Blade?

I'd like to get this configured before it goes into production as I assume
this requires access to the blade bios / setup to properly configure.

Best regards,

[ovirt-users] Unexpected exception when trying to destroy a VM

2016-02-19 Thread Mark Steele
oVirt Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6

I attempted to shutdown a VM via the VH's CLI by issuing the poweroff
command (ubuntu 14.04.3).

The session disconnected and ping dropped, however oVirt reports the VM up.
Attempted to 'Power Off' via oVirt gui and received and error.

Accessed the host via CLI and attempted a destroy with:

vdsClient -s 0 destroy *vmgui*

received an Unexpected exception. The VM still reports as UP in

vsdClient -s 0 list table

Thank you

[ovirt-users] Clone / New VM from Template changing network interfaces

2016-02-05 Thread Mark Steele
 oVirt Engine Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6

When cloning or creating a new vm, the network interfaces in
/etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules is getting changed - rendering
the new new VM un-networkable.

The original file looks like this:

However, once the VM is either cloned or a new VM created from a template
of this source VM, the file looks like this:

The 'correct' interfaces are still there, but out of sequence and there are
two additional interfaces that do not belong there.

Ovirt admin console is showing the correct number of interfaces as seen in
this image:

Any idea what is causing this?

Thank you for your assistance.

[ovirt-users] Several VM's stuck in Migration

2016-02-03 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

We recently had our storage array hang. We were able to get the disk array
back online, however several of our VM's attempted to migrate from one Host
to another. Now that the storage is online, several of the VM's still
indicate they are in a state of migration and I cannot manage them from
withing the ovirt engine web administration gui.

Most of the VM's are actually running properly and I can access them either
via ssh or RDP (depending on the OS).

I have attempted to clear the migration status with the following:

- service ovirt-engine restart (on the ovirt-engine vm)
- reboot ovirt-engine vm
- PGPASSWORD=### ./unlock_entity.sh -t vm vm-name
- restart the vm from within the vm

additionally - i went on the HV of one of the VM's and did:

vdsClient -s 0 destroy vm_guid

unfortunately, that removed all traces of the vm from that HV and it was
not on any of the other three HV's - although ovirt-engine still shows it
and reports it as migrating.

I'd like to clear the migrating status of the affected VM's and figure out
how to recover the missing one.

Any help would be appreciated. I am not the person who originally setup the
ovirt installation, so I am not sure where to go to pull logs.

Thank you for your assistance.

[ovirt-users] Disabling migration when there is a problem with storage

2016-02-03 Thread Mark Steele
Hello,

I'd like to know if there is a way to configure ovirt (oVirt Engine
Version: 3.5.0.1-1.el6) to NOT migrate VM's when there is a problem with
attached storage.

Scenario - our storage array that hosts all our VM disks failed. When that
happened, ovirt attempted to migrate running VM's from one host to another.
Unfortunately this left many of the VM's in a 'migrating to' state that
could only be resolved by restarting the HV's

I'd prefer to have ovirt simply hang the VM's until disk IO returns.

Is this possible?

Re: [ovirt-users] This VM is not managed by the engine

2015-07-12 Thread Mark Steele
Roy - Success!

I was able to restart vdsmd

'service vdsmd restart'

From there - I was able to issue the stop destroy command:

'vdsClient -s 0 destroy 41703d5c-6cdb-42b4-93df-d78be2776e2b'

Once that was done, I was able to REMOVE the VM from the GUI.

Thank you for all your help AND your patience with a noob!

I'd like to add that I am not the person who originally installed this
instance - and am not entirely familiar with how it is setup and installed
- so I may ask ignorant questions from time to time.

This should work. something isn't right with your setup
is your host an ovirt-node? could be that you hit [1] . let me know what
 version are you running.

please try the same with user vdsm. it should have permissions to
 /etc/pki/vdsm

 [1] https://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/27779/

If I restart vdsm, will that cause any issues with running VM's on this
ovirt installation? This is our production environment.

Generatlly the answer is no but lets avoid it if we can for this is a
 minor cosmetic issue I guess.

just as FYI - vdsm only reconnects to the socket exposed by libvirt to
control the vm lifecycle. VDSM doesn't manadate the lifecycle of a VM
unless the engine tells is so. Storage wise there could be some operations
but i'm almost sure they must not have effect on running VMs.

  Thank you

the vdsm on that host reports it back to the engine . since this vm
isn't in the engine DB it is concidered as EXTERNAL (thus the error 400
 from the API)

do yo know if the qemu-kvm proccess isn't running anymore?

if the process isn't running then vdsm must clean its cache

 try to:

 yum install vdsm-cli
 vdsClient -s 0 list
 vdsClient -s 0 destroy {vmId}

alternativly a vdsm restart will work (if the qemu proccess isn't
 running)

The VM is not really running - the IP addresses that are being reported
are from another VM that was recently removed. All attempts to control the
VM have failed. It does not have any NICS or disk associated with it - so
this seems to be a ghost in the machine. I attempted to unlock it using the
unlock_entity.sh script - it reports successful, however I still cannot do
 anything with the VM.
