Re: [xwiki-users] Authentification XWord/XOffice
Hi, Matthias' hunch was right. XWord's default authentication doesn't support proxies. I'm sorry but the guy who coded XWord has left the project and the current committers don't know much about XWord. This is why we've retired it BTW (see the warning on http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/XWiki+Office). XWord was intended as a power editor and as a transition tool for Office users. Obviously, times have changed. Inactivity and project retirement are a result of the declining relevance of MS Office, but even more so, due to the fact that we believe you can now get a much better experience using XWiki's default UI. Regards, Florin Ciubotaru In addition without more details (stack trace needed for example) it's hard to know what your problem is. Re: [xwiki-users] XOffice not downloading pages, missing attachments
Hi, If you didn't start your documentation yet and you don't have any legacy documents, I'd recommend using a pure web solution like XWiki. If you use MS Office for advanced content, you will have issues pushing that content to the wiki anyway. I created XOffice a few years ago, when MS Office was a lot more dominant and web editors were still weak(including the one used by XWiki), but the situation is quite different now. Indeed there was no development on it for the past year. If you have critical issues with XOffice, it may be one of the following: - you are using a localized version of Office or Windows (there are older known issues with those) - there is a conflict with newer XWiki versions. The MS Office and Windows behavior and security settings are different for versions released on other languages. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but that's the way it is. I've been receiving quite a few requests for a new release. However I could only do some bug fixing only for the En/En environment, since it's a pain to test and fix other versions. The only alternative would be someone stepping up and willing to work on it and ensure it works with latest XWiki Enterprise versions. See that we have nobody active on it, we could throw a vote to grandfather that person as an XOffice committer so that he/she can easily work on it. The XWiki space provides the access to the TableView and LiveTableViewResults Which shows all the page titles in all of the spaces, even if the user doesn't have access to those pages! First of all, for me the first column called Page displays page names not page titles. Then, for pages I don't have view right there is no link and a star is displayed which is explained after the live-table: (*) Some documents require special rights to be viewed. I believe my point still stands... A user not authorised to see a page should not be able to see the name of the page. A user not authorised to see a space should not be able to see the contents of a space. For example, if two independent school groups were using two xwiki spaces to build some design documents for their project, then both groups could gain information on the other group's design by checking out the page names. Eg I bet the Microsoft group would've loved to see some pages from the Apple group named iPod 4G specs or something like that !! Not really... Apple really likes to play this game In this case it would be done on purpose to simulate a leak and get the whole web excited! :) indeed, although if they were using xwiki, it would not be possible to hide that information! It is actually possible to hide the info, but it's not an easy process since it requires code modifications in the results page. I agree that document names might leak sensitive information. This extends to internal groups of members, not just guests. Eg: - Sales.HotLeadsNAregion - HR.ResignationLetterOfEmployeeJohnSmith - Tech.iPod4Gspecs This is an important aspect, especially since XWiki targets the enterprise environments. There are several reasons why this limitation exists: a. the vision: the default distribution should be an open environment, but easily costumizable by devs and admins b. technical: it's not possible to do a database query of documents depending on user rights. All documents rights need to be checked individually at runtime. In the case of a livetable, XWiki only checks the rights for the current result set(usually 10-20 documents) and specifies that some documents are restricted. We have clients that requested this to be changed. We usually change the results page to exclude the N restricted documents and to bring the next N documents on which the user has the proper rights. With this fix, the actual challange is that you cannot check the rights for all documents without hurting performance, thus you cannot provide the correct document count and pagination for the livetables. Re: [xwiki-users] View source
Hi Martin, All menu entries can be customized by overriding the menuview.vm template. The recommended way is to do this in the skin document(See Wiki Administration - Presentation - Skin - Customize). You will need to extent the XWiki.XWikiSkins class with a textarea property names menuview.vm. After that you should edit the skin document and paste and updated version of your template(in your case the template is /xwiki/templates/menuview.vm). Indeed, this could be the cause of the issue. I would have expected this behavior to be backwords compatible or having the old one deprecated for several XWiki versions as we receive this 'formated' XHTML trough public APIs. At this point the conversion will simply crash when used by an older client. IMO we should check the version of XE when XWord connects to it and if it's not compatible mention it. WDYT? XOffice already checks the XE version for several reasons. For this particular issue, I'd prefer to implement the fix it rather then saying it's incompatible. First thing to do until a release is done, is to at least document this on the wiki. The client relies on the XML-RPC and REST APIs which means that it should be compatible with the server as long as nothing changes in the API specs. I cannot confirm the exact cause of the issue yet. But based on the hint from Marius I could say that the xhtml parser should have accepted the old image marker for several versions. XML-RPC is a backwards compatible API, once we introduced the conversion methods, it means we commit to having them working properly across several XWiki versions. On the server side, in the rendering module, we have *voluntarily* broken several APIs. See the release notes for 2.5: http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ReleaseNotesXWikiEnterprise25#HAPIBreakages I don't know how this can affect you (i.e how this can affect the XMLRPC module). Hi Susan, Your server window is probably closing because the application cannot write files to disk(Eg: using Program Files folser). You either need to install xwiki into another folder or run the server as Administrator. After that you should be able to use the wiki by typing http://localhost:8080 into the browser. Recently we noticed that when adding images to pages via XWord the database contains an entry in the table xwikiattachment for the attachment but the data is not beeing inserted into the xwikiattachment_content table. This obviously leads to the image link beeing broken, shown as having 0b of size. I tried this with v1.1.1 as well als v1.2M1 against XWiki2.4. I've already tried this using a normal user (view, edit, comment rights) as well as the admin user (all rights) but it didn't make any difference. Thanks for all the details. Can you share a dummy url coresponding to the one you are using to login in XWord? Additionally, I would appeciate if you could test the following scenario: - Create a wiki page using Word - Insert some images then publish the page - View the page in the browser and click on one of the image attachements. - The attachment should be corrupt - Back in Word, re-publish the page - Refresh the browser tab containing the attachment url - The image appears - Referesh the entire wiki page in the brower - The image is currupt again This should confirm that the attachment is only cached and not stored on the server and will allow me to focus on the serverside api implementation. Other topics of XWord I'd like to mention: -install into Office2007 without admin rights not possible because of security issues (fails to write some settings to security protocol) Yes. This is imposed by Microsoft for this types of add-ins. The installer should prompt for admin rights. -xwiki browser of the plugin shows all spaces with view rights regardless of ignore or edit rights. Wouldn't it be nicer to show only spaces/pages with edit right? Rights managment cannot be cutback as much as to enforce the plugin browser and at the same time grant the user a passive view right on all spaces while logged in at the wiki. This is a limitation of the server. We should either improve the xml-rpc api, or switch use REST for the wiki explorer. We currently have low resources on XOffice but this should also go in the next releases. Thanks, Florin Ciubotaru Hopefully the data I supplied helps resolving the issue. Re: [xwiki-users] [BUG] XWord installer for MS Office 2007 does not automatically install PIA dependency
Hi Roman, Thanks for this detailed install report. The assemblies that are a part of the PIAs have the same name regardless of the office version. You may have had the 2003 versions installed thus preventing the XOffice bootstrapper from installing the PIA. When installed by a bootstrapper inside an installer and not stand alone, PIA won't be listed as an separate application in Control Panel. Also, there seems to be an issue with the PIAs which are currently listed as unavailable for bootsrapping. This is the more probable cause of the issue. If this persists I will change the dependency download location from Microsoft sites to xwiki.org. So I have installed it manually, re-enabled XWord plug-in and the XWord tab has finally appeared. I believe this error might be due to PIA install pack structure specifics. Programming rights are actually checked for the current page. Basically a page has programming rights when when it was last saved by a user having PR, certifying the page to run its scripts. This is a bit confusing for the users. In the case of office importer you will need to re-save the script pages and probably the admin page too, but it is know to be inconsistent and you will need to redo the operation if you have the Inadequate rights message again. Re: [xwiki-users] XOffice : login problem
Hi Simon, Looks like your wiki is redirecting to the login page. This happens because XOffice only uses xwiki as an application context, and detects the xmlrpc servlet mapping in a wrong manner. I now remember thinking at this potential issue since I developed the connectivity module. I've been hesitating to allow more flexibility on this because nobody requested it until now and because this will force every user to fill in more strange settings in XOffice. I tend to think it's more efficient having an admin configuring some settings then all users doing the same thing ;) There are two quick fixes for this: 1) Redeploy XWiki using an xwiki directory instead of xwiki-enterprise-web-2.2 2) Reconfigure the xmlrpc servler mapping to fit the XOffice request. In order to do this, go to /WEB-INF/web.xml and look for: servlet-mapping servlet-namexmlrpc/servlet-name url-pattern/xmlrpc/*/url-pattern /servlet-mapping Then change /xmlrpc/* with *xmlrpc/. I think going for option 1) is best. If you feel more flexibility is still needed then please create a jira issue and I'll try to implement in one of the following releases. Re: [xwiki-users] XOffice connection question
Hi Courtney, XOffice is only compatible with XWiki 2.0.4 or newer. The recommended XWiki version for XOffice 1.1 M2/107 is XWiki 2.2. This versioning information is available on the download page, but we should probably improve the documentation. The wait cursor error on the login dialog is a known issue. Re: [xwiki-users] XOffice : Which (how) .Net version ?
Hi Simon, XOffice runs on .net 3.5. If .net 3.5 is not found on your computer then it is automatically downloaded and installed by the XOffice installer. There's definitely something wrong there, since you should never get that message. I never had this problem but I think this is probably an wrong error message of the installer. From what I understand you already had XOffice on the machine, so in this case there shouldn't be anything wrong with your .net install. First thing to do is to make sure you uninstalled XOffice 1.0 before installing 1.1 M2 and that your firewall doesn't stop the installer from accessing xwiki.org and the Microsoft sites. I'm not sure how the installer and XOffice itself handle the proxy, there could be issues with it. This can be easily implemented but I didn't get the time to do it yet. With jodconverter 3.0-beta-2 you don't need a profile directory if you are starting OpenOffice server internal to XE: Refer: http://groups.google.com/group/jodconverter/browse_thread/thread/8b73b26b701c3249?pli=1for details. I fell we're hijacking the thread with this. Even if jodconverter will create your profile directory you still need to update the office importer management app which requires an directory path to connect. You only get to call jodconverter while importing, and obviously after the connection is made. But you can't connect to the server without the folder in the first place. Thanks, Florin Ciubotaru Note that we've mentioned this on the documentation at http://code.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Applications/OfficeImporterApplication For the *profilePath* configuration option, you need to have an OpenOffice profile directory created somewhere on the system. This can be a problem in server environments where launching OpenOffice is not an option. In such situations you can create an OpenOffice profile on a local computer and upload it to the server running XE. Although it is under the wrong topic (internally managed..) it should be under Externally managed... section (fixing that now). You only get to call jodconverter while importing, and obviously after the connection is made. But you can't connect to the server without the folder in the first place. Jodconverter will try to figure out the openoffice installation dir automatically. But this is not very accurate, and I have metioned this on the doc: http://code.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Applications/OfficeImporterApplication Yes, but even when it figures out the open office installation dir, it doesn't create the profile folder if it doesn't exist. This will cause the connection to fail. I think you have different behavior depending on the system. I tested on Windows Xp, 7 and Fedora. It never created the profile dir. Anyway, I don't think this is the cause of the current issue. Default values for *homePath* and *profilePath* configuration options will be calculated based on your operating environment. Even though this is the case, this calculation might not yield accurate results for some systems. So it's a good idea to configure these values manually by editing the xwiki.properties file. - Asiri ___ users mailing list users@xwiki.org http://lists.xwiki.org/mailman/listinfo/users ___ users mailing list users@xwiki.org http://lists.xwiki.org/mailman/listinfo/users

Re: [xwiki-users] office importer vs graphics
Hi, Sorry for the previous empty mail. All this quoting is not necessary, I never asked how jodconverter behaves nor do I trust the doc without testing it ;) My point is that just relying on that upgrade or specification didn't do the trick and we still have the issue. Please test the use case. :) The server fails to start when you call the start() method in DefaultOpenOffice manager if you don't provide an valid folder. Note that there is a difference between profileDir and templateProfileDir which you set in the configuration. Maybe you could investigate this. Since this is not related to the current thread, i propose to move the discussion on jira. This is a low priority issue as it only happens on a fresh machine. Re: [xwiki-users] XWord issue
Hi Fabian, This is known issue, you need to set the page syntax to xwiki/1.0 to fix the display issue. XWiki 2.0 syntax is not supported on your build. Note that XWord 1.0 final is not released yet. You are probably using XWord 1.0 RC1 which is out of sync with the platform for the past few months. We implemented the fix for the issue this week and we have compatibility with the current snapshot of the platform. I will publish a new XWord snapshot tomorrow on xoffice.xwiki.org. We will also have a new release next week that will be compatible with XE 2.0.4 and XE 2.1 RC1. Re: [xwiki-users] Why I chose Xwiki instead of other wikis
Ari Oinas wrote: Thanks for your feedback. I would be glad to know a bit more about what you were looking for, which wikis you tried and what made you choose XWiki rather than another system. This would help us understand better what makes XWiki stand out and what it lacks compared with other platforms. If you've got a little time, do you think you could tell us a bit about that? Many thanks in advance, Guillaume Ok, here's a small list of reasons why I chose Xwiki and not some other wiki. Before I begun searching for suitable wiki, I gathered a list of requirements that a wiki must have. Wikis that I tested or studied were: MediaWiki, TikiWiki, Xwiki and Confluence. Maybe some others too, but I don't remember ;) Here is that list and how different wikis fulfill those requirements: Requirement 1: Ability to transclude pages and sections of pages in other pages MediaWiki: Yes, support page transcluding natively and section transcluding can be added with plugin Xwiki: Supports page transcluding. Section macro was easy to do, and I got to do it just the way I like it :) Confluence: I think it supports transcluding. Not tested it though. Requirement 2: Support for hierarchical information ( tree-like ) MediaWiki: Very bad. Can be achieved using categories, but because Category is a namespace, category names must be unique which was unacceptable in mycase. Xwiki: Very flexible. Namespaces ( Spaces in Xwiki ) are easy to create and pages can be ordered hierarchically using page's parent -field. Requirement 3: Support for content localization/translation Mediawiki: None. AFAIK every language needs it's own Wiki. Xwiki: Built-in. Creating translated content is easy. Functions to retrieve translations still needs work, but are good enough to get the job done. Requirement 4: Flexible, easy to maintain user rights Mediawiki: User right management very restricted. Better with plugins but still poor. Xwiki: Superb! Very easy, yet powerful way to handle user rights. I really liked that user right has 3 options: allow, deny, neutral. This combined with user groups and spaces makes user rights management very enjoyable. TikiWiki: Frustratingly detailed. Has some very powerful features, but list of about 100 different user right parameters is very frustrating. (This opinion is based on very quick tests) Requirement 5: Ability make offline HTML dumps of wiki content MediaWiki: Possible (maybe with a plug-in, I don't remember) Xwiki: Supported natively. Yet, I decided to make my own XML Dump program which fetches content through XML/RPC interface. And now a list of pros and cons for every wiki I tested: Mediawiki: + Widely used, lots of help available + lots of plugins - hierarchical information support very bad - user right management limited and hard to comprehend TikiWiki: + Lots of features - User interface looks clumsy and is difficult to use ( maybe because I tested Xwiki just before this ;) - User rights management is overwhelming Confluence: ( not tested, opinions based on what I read about it) + seems finalized + used widely in enterprises and universities + XML/RPC interface - PRICE Xwiki: + Very slick UI + Macros / Programming capabilities + XML/RPC interface + User rights management + customer support - Seems in many ways incomplete/work in progress - Documention is scattered across the internets / help is very hard to find using Google. Most searches end up in Xwiki JIRA-pages. - Xwiki documentation pages seem disorientating. Even if I know theres some useful info there, it takes me 15mins to find it. (DevGuide, dev.xwiki.org, xwiki.org/Features) - Example: http://xoffice.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/CodeBase/XmlRpcProxy and http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/XMLRPC, so similar, yet in totally different places The XmpRpcProxy page was created after you sent your first mail. I published that page, as a result of your mail, so that it potentially helps you. As you can see the notes in the page, it is only a draft. When completed(fully maps the xml-rpc modelapi) it will be linked/added to the platform page. - Scandinavian characters in pageIds don't seem to work I hope these lists are helpful to you. Despite some criticism I presented here, you have developed an amazing wiki. I think you should focus a little more on making documentation easy to find and read even for someone who is just starting to code or otherwise noob (such as me ;). Now it gives an impression that you have to be Linux-expert/super-coder/uber-nerd to be able to set up wiki and program it (which you don't need to be, it's actually quite simple). Re: [xwiki-users] Translations cannot be fetched using XML/RPC interface
Hi, I recreated your scenario an published a basic XmlRpc proxy on this page: - http://xoffice.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/CodeBase/XmlRpcProxy Getting the wiki content of a translated page seems to work fine. Here's how it can be used: Page pageInfo = proxy.GetPage(token, Main.WebHome?language=fr); String frenchContent = pageInfo.content; The language parameter value must be a value present in the translations array. Notes: - The translations array contains all available translations for that page, except the default language of the page. - The default language of the page is the default language of the wiki at the moment when the page is created. If ,in time, you change the wiki's default language, the page default language for the page will not change. - If you need the rendered content you will need to make another call to this API method: public String renderContent(String token, String space, String pageId, String content) throws Exception; Please let me know of your progress Thanks, Florin Ciubotaru Ari Oinas wrote: Ok, my setup is as follows: Xwiki Enterprise 1.71 installed on Apache Tomcat server (Win Xp Pro Sp3) and it's working fine. Would older versions of Word be supported in future? Or even Open Office writer? Regards, Richard There are no current plans of implementing XOffice for another version of Microsoft Office. Yet, we can adapt the solution relatively easy only to Office 2003, if this is going to be asked by the XWiki.org community. Unfortunately Microsoft discontinued most extensibility technologies for versions of office prior to 2003, because those were created in early '90s and didn't fit the current market any more. The old technologies that are still supported just aren't powerful enough and the support for them will stop in the near future. We choose VSTO as the technology to develop XOffice on top of, at the cost of losing users that have older versions of Office, because it is the only technology that is guaranteed to be in the next versions of Office. Our tech roadmap mainly focuses on Office 2007 and the upcoming Office 14. Regarding Open Office, I see a very high probability of having a similar solution for it, if XOffice will match the impact we expect it to have, or the community will ask for Open Office integration.
