Hello,

+0.7 to declare 16 the winner and improve it
+0.2 to start a third round between improved version of 4 and 16
+0.1 to start all over

What do you think about this:

 +9 for 4

 +1 for 15
 +14 for 16
 +1 for 19

Normally, 16 would be the winner, but since several key members of the
community objected to it, I see three ways to proceed:

 1. Declare 16 as the elected logo, but further improve it to soften the
 objections
 2. Start a third round between improved version of 4 and 16
 3. Slow down a bit, since there's no hard deadline to meet, and start
 all over, accepting new proposals

I for one would go for option 1, if Vincent, Ludovic, Guillaume, Fabio

first round of votes (digest here:

we chose 6 popular proposals for the second round:
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallengeRound2 .

The authors of these proposals were asked to do the following, if not
 already done for round 1:
 * try to integrate any constructive feedback that came with the
votes (a digest of the feedback from the emails is available for each
 proposal on
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallengeRound2 )
 * polish the design (if they consider it necessary)
 * provide the requested variations for .org, enterprise and office
 * provide samples for light and dark background
 * provide a blackwhite version
 * provide a 16X16 icon containing the logo or a representative part
 of the logo
 * provide a nice Powered by XWiki button that goes with the logo
 * provide a mockup/screenshot with the logo used in the current
 skin, colibri

For most of the finalist logos, the _final_ versions were already
 uploaded here:

For those who were not updated, we will use the initial submissions
 for round 2 as well,

 VOTING:

You can send your vote on the mailing list (d...@xwiki.org or

Each voter can grant a whole +1 to only one of the 6 finalists
 (
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallengeRound2#HFinalistproposals
 ).

IMPORTANT: Before choosing a logo based on your personal preference,
please try to also ask yourself the following questions:

 * Is it distinctive? Note that it should not resemble other logos,
 including the XWiki SAS/xwiki.com logo.
 * Is it easy to remember and recognize?
 * Does it blend in smoothly with the Colibri skin? With the new
XWiki.org skin? Note that adjustments to the skin is possible, in order
to better integrate with the logo.
 * Is the design scalable? Could it (or parts of it) be
successfully used in a 16X16 icon? Would it look good on a very large
 poster?
 * Can it be used (as it is, or adapted) on both light and dark backgrounds?
 * What would it look like in black and white (not just grayscale)?
It's ok if some details are lost, but it needs to still look
attractive and keep the main features.

 TIMELINE:

08/Apr/10 : Beginning of second round of votes on d...@xwiki.org,

We should believe in evolution, not in intelligent design ;-)

For me topology (i.e. shapes of character) looks good, though I'd like
right part for w parallel to slope parts of X and k, with iki size
adjusted accordingly
(probably they need to be smaller then).

Wouldn't it be better?

  * Is the design scalable? Could it (or parts of it) be
successfully used in a 16X16 icon? Would it look good on a very large

  * Can it be used (as it is, or adapted) on both light and dark

  * What would it look like in black and white (not just grayscale)?

IMO it's a bit too late to give -1 for a logo that passed the first
round. Is it less readable now?

16 was voted by 11 community members (including myself) in the first
round. Do we count less than people from outside the project? If we
want a community-chosen logo then we should let the community choose. If
we want a logo that is good for marketing then we should find a branding
company to do it for us.

 Thanks,
 Marius

I completely agree with Marius, I would also add that since this is a
Community project, it should have a Community logo !
Since 16 has receive many votes now, and that I also agree with Vincent,
Ludovic and others, it is not readable enough, I have made an alternative
design: W-angle. My feeling was that the W is difficult to read, so my
proposal try to keep the style and reworked it. There is also small changes
in spacing, and a different powered by button.

Here is almost all that was requested in a proposal with this variable:
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/download/Community/LogoChallengeRound2/16%2Dwangle%2Ddefault.png

I really hope that if the logo 16 is chosen, my proposal could help in
mitigating the disappointment of those that really find it unacceptable.

WDYT ?

No but if you check none of us voted for it and there was no rule for giving -1
(I would have given it otherwise since I didn't like it in the first round.
That said I was pretty sure nobody would vote for it when I saw it. I was wrong
it seems ;)).

BTW the problem of readability was raised even in the first round but not much
was done about it (or I didn't see it).

16 was voted by 11 community members (including myself) in the first

errr? We *definitely* want a logo that is good for marketing! That's the main
point (the only point?) of having a logo.

When users log into some website and see this logo we want them to know the
site is using XWiki (if they can't read it, they won't even be able to google
it if they like it and want to find more about this project).

It seems you're opposing marketing and community. I don't know why. This is all
about marketing. The whole xwiki.org is about marketing (i.e. make people want
to use XWiki). Otherwise we'd just publish the sources with no documentation at
all.

Thanks
-Vincent

PS: I'm not saying that we should revote or remove that logo. I'm just giving a
strong opinion that the logo is unreadable and is going to cause a lot of
confusion. I would like to see that fixed if that logo is selected by the vote.

I don't particularly like the recent alternative suggestions, the w is either
getting unwieldy or too wide, losing its original impact, and I'd drop my +1
for it in those cases.

To add my hack, what if:
a) the X was made bigger and put behind the Wiki part
b) the w was a full W (straighter, not spread out)
c) the k was a full k (add the vertical line)

... then it might be more readable while still retaining a logo quality?

I didn't vote for 4 because I agree with some others: a) the pencils do imply
drawing more than collaborative writing; b) it seems to be lacking that
professional logo quality.

But maybe we're forcing something that shouldn't be forced. Could it be that
*none* of the proposed logos fit what you're after, and we're just choosing
from the best options presented?

I'm looking at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X and
http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/09/index.html . There are some X
representations which could have been the starting point for the XWiki
logo (e.g. the Egyptian hieroglyph column, Phoenician S, Greek Xi,
Braille or Morse code for X). I would have liked to see a logo proposal
consisting of an easy to remember symbol that is not visually related to
the latin X, even if it didn't had a lot of meaning.

Maybe it would be good for people to propose improved versions, but it
will be hard to improve readability while also maintaining the
style/logo idea.

One option would be to keep just the X from the logo, and use a normal
font for writing the actual product name (something like 4 does with the
pencils).

It would be good if our style was geeky-oldschool but I don't think it's the

It is simple, straightforward and easily to remember (not to reproduce, to
remember that you've seen it before).
It's look IMO is perfect for a technical application and community.
It's smart, creative and I LOVE IT :)

Go version 16 :)

Btw, logos are graphical marks and is not mandatory that they are logotypes
(wordmarks). This means you don't necessarily need to read the name of the
product from the start (look at apple, volkswagen, audi, sun, etc). After
you know it's XWiki, you can easily see what proposal 16 states.

The logo should be the identity and feeling of that product. Having a smart
logo would be nice for us, don't you think?

I don't agree with this reasoning. Either you use a logo that doesn't mean
anything (ie it's a symbol, an image, etc) or you have a logo with letters and
in that case it must be readable.

Even though I know it's about XWiki, I can't even read it...

I don't find the logo that smart. A smart logo is a logo that is simple,
polished and that be read easily. Cleverness is not usually that good in
branding since a good portion of people won't understand the clever thing.

Thanks,
Marius

 Hello XWiki Community,

We're still looking for the new XWiki.org logo. First of all, many
thanks to all those who submitted their ideas (
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallenge ). After the
first round of votes (digest here:
 http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ah6DqXzfHT2vdHV5Ty1LX3lKU3U5V3M4YmNFSXEzcVEhl=en),
we chose 6 popular proposals for the second round:
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallengeRound2 .

  * provide a blackwhite version
  * provide a 16X16 icon containing the logo or a representative part
 of the logo
  * provide a nice Powered by XWiki button that goes with the logo
  * provide a mockup/screenshot with the logo used in the current
 skin, colibri

For most of the finalist logos, the _final_ versions were already
 uploaded here:
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallengeRound2 .
For those who were not updated, we will use the initial submissions
 for round 2 as well,
and voters will have to use their imagination in case
any of the required use cases is missing.

 VOTING:

You can send your vote on the mailing list (d...@xwiki.org or
users@xwiki.org), in reply to this email. No twitter votes this time.

Would it look good on a very large
 poster?
  * Can it be used (as it is, or adapted) on both light and dark
 backgrounds?
  * What would it look like in black and white (not just grayscale)?
It's ok if some details are lost, but it needs to still look
attractive and keep the main features.

first round of votes (digest here:

we chose 6 popular proposals for the second round:

The authors of these proposals were asked to do the following, if not
 already done for round 1:
   * try to integrate any constructive feedback that came with the
votes (a digest of the feedback from the emails is available for each
 proposal on
 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallengeRound2 )
   * polish the design (if they consider it necessary)
   * provide the requested variations for .org, enterprise and office
   * provide samples for light and dark background
   * provide a blackwhite version

 VOTING:

Each voter can grant a whole +1 to only one of the 6 finalists

Would it look good on a very large
 poster?
   * Can it be used (as it is, or adapted) on both light and dark
 backgrounds?
   * What would it look like in black and white (not just grayscale)?
It's ok if some details are lost, but it needs to still look
attractive and keep the main features.

Re: [xwiki-users] [xwiki-devs] XWiki Logo Challenge

2010-03-31 Thread Anca Luca
Hi all,

It is very hard to choose (and by this all participants should understand that
all proposals are noteworthy). I also took into account following criteria: can
I draw it with a pencil on a paper in a single color and it would still be
recognized?

As a result my votes and comments go like this:

4 0.2 -- either B, or A with thicker pencils so that the X is more obvious
5 0.1 -- I like the way it looks but I don't see that much of a wiki
reference
+ it's not drawable
12E 0.1 -- it's nice, close / far enough of the old logo, but it looses in
drawability and single color
16 0.2 (with a little more for B, maybe) -- there could be a color issue but
the
shape would make it recognizable easily
20 0.2 -- I like the way it blends together and it is pretty recognizable
8 0.1 -- I like the wheels a lot, they're very much app platform, geek-ish
6B 0.1 -- I like the idea but it really needs different colors and more
polish,
right now it looks a bit flashy and raw

I also liked the looks of proposals 2, both A and B, but they're not very much
drawable and the X is not very obvious + I couldn't find why arrows would be
representative for xwiki...

Note that although 15 meets pretty well the criteria above, it still looks to
me
too much around the atlassian logo (yeah, any human shape would do it)... + I'm
more fond of geometric shapes, I think...

Thanks,
Anca

 Hi XWikiers!

It's time to inject new blood in XWiki.org. While discussing about
improving its look feel we thought it would be a good time to create
a new logo for XWiki.org as it's an important part of a website
 design.
We borrowed the current logo from XWiki.com some time ago and, in
order to keep the distinction between the company and the Open-Source
project clear, we think XWiki.org websites and projects need their own
 logo.

As you may know, we love proposals, that's why we'd like to make the
logo design an open challenge, anyone interested can join and a vote
amongst the community will determine the winner. Even if the main
purpose of the challenge is to have fun, the person whose design gets
selected will receive XWiki goodies, including his logo printed on a
t-shirt obviously :) The designer of the selected logo will enter the
Hall Of Fame, and last but not least reward : the design will be
spread wide (XWiki Enterprise is more than 1 downloads/month and
XWiki.org web site more than 5 visits a month).

 The challenge takes place there:

 My favorite is 15.

 * nice work done for 15 but i find the logo too similar to Atlassian

I strongly disagree that just because it represent a people, it is
 Atlassian
like, they do not hold the exclusivity of people logos.
Atlasian logo is like a weight-lifter that lift the world, very straight
 on
its foot. Nothing to do with a happy jumping man, using really curved
 shape
 at all !

XWiki is about peoples sharing information and compare to most other logo,
15 is one that have the most interesting evocation.
Without dash, in red or another color, avoiding blue (even if I like it)
 and
probably using a more curved font to improve, if needed, the clear
difference it have with the Atlassian logo.
I would be curious to see what Vishal could propose with some more work.

19 would be my second choice, since it is curved, and even nice straight
logo like 7, 8 or 16 evoke to me some inflexibility or technicality, which
 is frightening.

12 could be interesting as a continuation on the initial theme, but it
 would
be less distinctive with XWiki.com, probably a nice evolution for them not
 for the open-source one.

1, 2 and 13 are not scaling. 17 is nice, but not scaling and evocation is
inappropriate. Appart for not being easy to scale, I feel 4 is not
 readable
for newcomers, using only 2 pencils, could probably helps there.

Hi XWikiers,

I like 15, which to me is probably the most distinctive of all the logos
presented. I also like the fact that one can read a X, a W, a i and a K in
that little guy's shape :-) I think the - should be removed between the
X and Wiki and that the case should be switched from X-WIKI to XWiki
but that's minor. In short, probably my favorite one.

I have an issue with 16 - I showed it to a couple friends and they were
unable to read it as XWiki. I kinda like it but I already know it's
supposed to mean XWiki but I'm afraid it's not readable enough for other
people.

I also like 19 (the two-colors version, not the 3D shaped one). I also
happened to see a version of 19 with a font that made it look nicer - JV,
do you think that version could be added to the page?

I agree that the way XWiki is written in 16 doesn't make it easy to be

Even if the main
purpose of the challenge is to have fun, the person whose design gets
selected will receive XWiki goodies, including his logo printed on a
t-shirt obviously :) The designer of the selected logo will enter the
Hall Of Fame, and last but not least reward : the design will be
spread wide (XWiki Enterprise is more than 1 downloads/month and
XWiki.org web site more than 5 visits a month).

 that we'll have a second round with 4, 12, 15 and 16 (and maybe 19).

In the spreadsheet I converted non-numerical votes to what I felt was
the intent of the voter, please correct if my assumptions were wrong.

There are two columns with no label, I and N. What is their meaning?
Also in my case the points don't sum to 1. Is it right? I added the
remaining 0.1 to 16B.

Thanks,
Marius

Only two days left for the first round of votes.

 Hi Community,

The XWiki Logo proposal period is now closed, many thanks to everyone who
participated. It is now the time to vote the new logo amongst the 19
 proposals available here:

 http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/Community/LogoChallenge#HProposals

 You can send your vote:
 - on the mailing list, by replying to this e-mail
 - on twitter, in the format: #xwikilogo proposal_number

Don't hesitate to nominate several proposals if you feel that they are
really close and you cannot decide for just one. Sometimes, a bunch of fuzzy
opinions can lead to a more accurate result.

 IMPORTANT:
Before choosing a logo based on your personal preference, please try to also
 ask yourself the following questions:
 - Is it distinctive?
 - Is it easy to remember and recognize?
 - Is the design scalable? Could it (or parts of it) be successfully used in
a 16X16 icon? Would it look good on a very large poster?
 - Can it be used (as it is, or adapted) on both light and dark backgrounds?
 - What would it look like in black and white (not just grayscale)? It's ok
if some details are lost, but it needs to still look attractive and keep the
 main features.

Motivating your vote also helps better understand what qualities a logo
 evokes in people's minds.

Also note that the designs are not final, the selected proposal will be
further tweaked and perfected, so don't discard a logo just for minor flaws.

If several proposals come close to being selected, we could organize a
 second round of voting.

Please send us your votes before March 31st.

Not sure what I like yet but I wanted to make a few notes.

12 13 bear a strong resemblance to an American telephone company.

7 looks like barbed wire which isn't very inviting. I think only a slight
change would be necessary to stop that.

15 uses a hyphen which is not in the url, however I think the egg shaped
background is symbolic of the extendability of XWiki.

15: This is a minor detail, it could be fixed if the logo is chosen.

14 has an X which looks like it could be used in other places as an icon.

11 I like the hummingbird but the font seems mismatched.

I like:

8 - I see engineering in the gears which relates to the platform
aspect. It's a bit too vertical though. I wonder what it could become
more horizontal
4A - with different colors for the pencils

Great jobs by all participants.. All the logos have something nice !
