Re: [VBox-users] VB and 5.18.0-0.rc7.20220519gitf993aed406ea.56.fc37.x86_64 support
Current practice is to release stable builds of VirtualBox once a month. Only Linux stable kernels are supported, meaning that any -rc kernels are unsupported. For people running unstable Linux, they must run unstable VirtualBox too, and perhaps patch themselves. Or wait 1 month. Re: [VBox-users] Is it possible to ping a virtual host in one VM from another virtual host in another VM
1. First of all MAC addresses have a lot of reserved numbers, so take care https://www.iana.org/assignments/ethernet-numbers/ethernet-numbers.xhtml I suggest you to copy first 6 hex numbers from Virtualbox generated MAC addresses and only setup last numbers. Can’t your program generate proper MAC addresses? (because if you by mistake use a wrong Broadcast-reserved MAC address, things will not work). 2.a. Yes, just connect all your VMs either to bridge mode to Ethernet adapter. (Promiscuous mode = allow all) VM - Settings - Mode = Bridge, Promiscuous mode = allow all. 2.b. or you can try internal network (a.k.a vSwitch) (called “intnet”) - mode = Internal network. 2.c. Disable firewall inside VMs (Windows Firewall or Linux iptables) other notes: Your vRouters may also need a default gateway or a routing protocol running to connect to each other. Or they are in Layer2 switchmode? If in L2 mode, then default gateway on hosts h1,2 (guests^2, really) is not required. best wishes, On Thu, 13 Sep 2018 at 8:41 Pynbiang Hadem wrote: > Hi Alexey, > > I have now corrected the MAC address with standard values. *The Script > for VM1 is shown below. Re: [VBox-users] Is it possible to ping a virtual host in one VM from another virtual host in another VM
uhh ohh? are you setting a non standard MAC address? why? Anyway there’s so called promiscuous mode, and you need to enable in VirtualBox to allow this. By default, Virtualbox blocks all unknown MAC addresses. so your hosts are not hosts at all, they are rather second level guests g^2. (VM in VM) Vbox VM settings, network, promiscuous mode = allow all. [VBox-users] VirtualBox (vboxdrv) installation FAILED on new Windows 7 PC
- Hi All, I'we got a new Win 7 PC: Toshiba Z40-C laptop with Intel Core i7 6600U CPU. VirtualBox 5.2.12 (latest), but also tried 5.1.38 and 5.0.40, with the same problem. VBox.log: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8ss3510bofy4ntd/vbox.log.txt?dl=0 The problem is: no matter what I do, "vboxdrv" never gets installed. Re: [VBox-users] Virtualbox version comparison
You can read the change logs. IMO performance in general doesn't improve very much, except for specific use-cases. What improves is better support for newer operating systems (esp new Linuxes), and some nice-to-have features like file Drag-n-Drop. Read "Changelog" so you will see. Re: [VBox-users] getting KVM VM to run in VB on Mac
VirtIO disk controller is NOT supported by VirtualBox. You will need to migrate your KVM guest OS to SCSI controller first, before you can migrate. (I'm not sure how to do that, but /etc/fstab or udev trickery may be required, depending on Linux distribution) Here is the little dirty secret : VirtualBox and KVM, both originate from Qemu codebase in 2005 (including BIOS, disk controller and networking support), but after a decade of progress by different dev teams codebases diverged so much that they don't resemble each other anymore. VirtualBox supports IDE/SATA/SCSI/SAS (+NVM, with VirtualBox 5.1). (+limited USB disk support) -Technologov -- What NetFlow Analyzer can do for you? Re: [VBox-users] getting KVM VM to run in VB on Mac
theoretically it should boot (but not necessarily recognize all the virtual hardware, because it is different). At least the guest's bootloader should work. Try to start your VDI image with KVM, or use an image both virtualizers support, like VMDK. On VirtualBox side, you need to create a new VM, and attach disk image to it. Make sure the disk controller is the same as on KVM (can be IDE/SATA/SCSI), and boot order is correct. -Technologov 2 Июн 2016 г. 23:55 пользователь "Larry Martell"написал: > I have a centos VM created on a linux system with KVM. I think it belongs only to timer/clock (not network card), and only Windows 7+ (not XP). The good news, is that I have VirtIO network drivers for Windows (XP...7). The bad news, is that VirtIO itself in VirtualBox is not optimized and gives lower performance than Intel E1000 network emulation. Re: [VBox-users] Disabling use of guest additions in guest/list of relevant properties/extradata field
VirtualBox doesn't have such capability to the best of my knowledge. VirtualBox Paravirtualization capabilities are vast, and the holes between hypervisor and guest are many more than in Swiss Cheese. Paravirtual devices: -VirtualBox VGA (including Seamless mode and Multi-monitor) -- I think this cannot be disabled. -Mouse Integration -- you can turn it off, but I doubt if it completely disables MI, as I had issues with this during Linux logon manager (KDE display manager on boot) -3D acceleration -- (can be disabled host-side.) -VirtIO network -Clock source/time sync -Guest Properties (allows to get guest's IP address and such...) -Clipboard -- (can be disabled host-side.) -Shared Folders -- (can be disabled host-side.) -File Drag-n-Drop -- (can be disabled host-side.) -Guest Execution (including copy-files to guest, 3rd method besides DnD+SF) -- I think this cannot be disabled. special: - CPU - hardware virtualization allows to detect which host CPU is involved. (I think Intel debug register are visible from guest) - this may limit live-migration between hosts of different CPUs. ... this is just the top off my head, I'm sure I can figure out some more holes, if I think longer. Re: [VBox-users] Announcement: VirtualBox 5.0 released
Maybe you could decide to support last 2 releases. i.e. 5.0.x and 4.3.x instead of a zillion older branches. And 6-8 months definitely happened in 2007/2008. During v1.x and 2.x series. Support of older major releases takes a _lot_ of time. And even if it took 21 months for 5.0 after 4.3 was released that does not mean that there is no innovation. [VBox-users] Twelve minutes !
Twelve minutes on Big-Iron ! In 12 minutes only, I was able to install 23 VMs in fully automated mode, simultaneously ! With a click on the run button on the Auto-installs VM group. Host: Debian Linux 8, 48 CPUs (24 Core+HT), Intel Xeon Haswell. (Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2670 v3 @ 2.30GHz) + 288 GB of RAM. (+a bunch of 10K RPM hard disks in RAID) VirtualBox 5.0.0_RC3_TE (Technologov Edition) + unattended patch BETA7. I used RAM disk for the tests. Consumed around 150 GB for RAMdisk + another 25 GB for actual VMs. Still had 100 gigs free. It is likely, that a RAID of Fast SSDs (NVMe or PCIe) could perform nearly as fast. In times past, circa 2008, it took me like 20-30 minutes to install one poor Windows XP in manual mode on a Core2-class hardware (on HDD) in VirtualBox, drinking coffee in between the questions. A bunch of Debian/Red Hat/openSUSE/Windows were run from zero and installed themselves perfectly ! in 12 minutes only ! From Windows 2000 up to Windows 10. RHEL 3-to-7. Debian 67. Re: [VBox-users] Announcement: VirtualBox 5.0 Release Candidate 2 released
What is the timeline for the final release of version 5 ? Usually Open-source projects are released when ready. Being a long-time contributor, I believe releasing v5.0 will take another 2-3 weeks. For example whole v4.1 BETA cycle until 4.1.0 release was only 3 weeks. Why ? Because even 4.1.0-BETA1 was already fairly stable, and despite deep tests, I could not find many bugs. About v5.0 cycle: It is a *very* long cycle. Primarily, because v5.0-BETA1 was pre-mature, released very unstable, alpha-quality. And if I can find dozens of bugs in several hours of testing, as I did in v5.0, the situation is very bad. It means, that v5.0 BETA has a lot of bugs at the surface, and also deep inside. in v5.0, bugs were so pervasive, that I was able to find bugs in nearly every single component of VirtualBox, VMM, 3D graphics, GuestAdditions, Drag-n-Drop, VBoxSVC, new Scaling, encryption, detachable VM, USB 3, Seamless mode, SATA hot-plug, you-name-it... and several bugs in many of those areas. Total amount of issues I found may be over 50. But it is improving with BETA4 and RC1. === So why 2 weeks vs 3 months ? 2 weeks for 4.1 BETA cycle, because it was mostly stable on day-1. vs 3-months 5.0 BETA cycle - due to early release of 5.0-BETA1 (should be called v5.0-ALPHA1 in my opinion), buggy in multiple areas. === v5.0 cycle is already like 3 months long, and it is mostly Drag-n-Drop bugs still holding the release. I hope it will be fixed in few weeks time. -- -Alexey Eromenko Technologov -- Monitor 25 network devices or servers for free with OpManager! Similar to Linux_AC series (Linux kernel from Alan Cox), I decided to run my own VirtualBox TE, Technologov Edition series. TE series will be experimental for now. For now it includes v5.0.0-BETA4_OSE + NVIDIA Aero patch + vbox-unattended patch. https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=10t=67954 It includes 2 features not found in Oracle VirtualBox 5.0: -Fix for Windows Aero on Linux / NVIDIA hosts -VBox-unattended (Automated Guest OS install) My patches are open-source under the under MIT / X11 license. ..and just in case Oracle kicks me from their forum, I have a prepared backup forum at my own Qumble project: http://www.qumble.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2t=8 Sadly Technologov was downgraded from Moderator status into Volunteer for his hard work of pushing the limits of VirtualBox technology, with his own VirtualBox_TE release. For 8 years of helping and pushing the project forwards. (since Jan.2007, v1.3.2) For opening over 50 bugs during v5.0 BETA series. The most among ALL the testers ! Re: [VBox-users] On disk shrinking
Shrinking is risky by design, even in theory; Reason: host doesn't know which logical filesystems guest supports. Storage consists of 2 levels: (low-level) block-level (VDI, VMDK, VHD, ...) and (high-level) filesystem level. It can be FAT, NTFS, ext3, or how about ZFS or BetterFS ? VirtualBox does support only block-device level storage, but not logical filesystems on top of it. Shrinking is theoretically very risky, until VirtualBox learns to read logical filesystems level also, in addition to block-device level. Not gonna happen IMO. -Technologov -- BPM Camp - Free Virtual Workshop May 6th at 10am PDT/1PM EDT Develop your own process in accordance with the BPMN 2 standard Learn Process modeling best practices with Bonita BPM through live exercises http://www.bonitasoft.com/be-part-of-it/events/bpm-camp-virtual- event?utm_ source=Sourceforge_BPM_Camp_5_6_15utm_medium=emailutm_campaign=VA_SF ___ VBox-users-community mailing list VBox-users-community@lists.sourceforge.net https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/vbox-users-community ___ Unsubscribe: mailto:vbox-users-community-requ...@lists.sourceforge.net?subject=unsubscribe

[VBox-users] Russia invades Ukraine, call for Help ! (Donations and sanctions)
Due to recent aggression of Russian army against my brothers, in Ukraine, I call for HELP !!! Such medieval age aggression is completely unacceptable in the globalized 21st century. Okay, let's start from the beginning. In 2014, due to mass-protests in Ukraine, Kiev, called EuroMaidan, old pre-russian President Yanukovich (retreated to Russia) was replaced by much more business-oriented and Europe-friendly President Petro Poroshenko. Right after that Russia occupied Crimea, part of Ukraine. Recently Russia entered full force into mainland-Ukraine. Here is the problem: Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union, now wants to become Free and break ties with the big Russian brother. Russia, which was the biggest (main) part of the Soviet Union doesn't let it go. What Russia wants? -Dictatorship -No freedom of speech -No opposition -No Bitcoin (and other crypto-currencies -- they are all banned in Russia) (as compared to Ukraine, which recently put it's first BTM, Bitcoin teller machine in Kiev.) -Radicalism, closed-border and anti globalization. More specifics: -Anti-war Protesters in Russia were all beaten by the Russian police and KGB special forces, and put into jail. -Closure of several McDonalds restaurants in Moscow. -Food import ban by Russia from EU/US. (hurts both parties, but EU economy is 10x stroner, so Russians will get hit more than Europeans) What Ukraine wants? -Break ties from it's past -- Soviet Union and (big brother) Russia -Become modern, and free democracy with freedom of speech -Become part of the European Union -Globalization Russia has invaded Ukraine, and the global community must act to stop this agression. And on 27.Aug.2014 it becae very obvious. Russian officials, President Putin. and their foreign officer have said, that there are no Russian trrops in Ukraine, but they are lying ! Proof-of-aggression by Russia: (in Russian, but you can use Google Translate) http://www.bbc.co.uk/russian/international/2014/08/140827_ukraine_russian_soldiers_experts.shtml -and- http://lb.ua/news/2014/08/26/277196_plennie.html Because all diplomatic acts and sanctions have failed to stop Russia, we need to act with force. Ukrainian Army provides it's soldiers with weapons, clothes and basic food. That's it. Communication radios, that were left since the soviet union age are usually broken, and there are few left. The Ukrainian army was non-maintained for 23 years (between 1991, when Soviet Union was broken into smaller countried and until this war in 2014). We're gonna provide Ukrainian soldiers with stuff, that they lack through private volunteer organizations. We'll provide them with personal body armor, better radio communications, night-vision, medicide, batteries and other stuff, that official Ukrainian army doesn't support. Myself being Russian-Israeli-jew, so it is not easy for me to say this, but Putin (Russian President) has to be stopped. I also have friends and family from Ukraine. Those were brother-nations, before this crazy war of 2014. Putin, the Russian President, is guilty for this WAR ! He must be Stopped ! We, at our family, Eromenko, already entered sanctions against Russian Federation and call the same. Remember: Every $1000 buys a personal armor -- gives additional chance to save Ukrainian life, and beat the Putin aggression !! Action: Donate Bitcoin to enable Ukrainian soldiers to protect their freedom. I also call for sanctions against Russian: Stop buying russian products ! No Kaspersky Antivirus, no Russian food. (Poland and Ukraine produce similar-style food). The money will be spread among several large volunteer organizations in Ukraine, including: -Army SOS (https://www.facebook.com/groups/801155103252773/) -Wings Phoenix (https://www.facebook.com/wings.phoenix.rus) ..and potentially with side donations to smaller volunteer organizations: -Volunteer's hundred svit -Narodniy Til -potentially other organizations, that help Ukraine === Donate Bitcoin: 155ec7dfw7ZhVCA1n5Aap8uigpbXPKaqRh PayPal: donate directly to Army SOS. You don't need middle man. (Me) === -Alexey Eromenko Technologov, 31.Aug.2014. P.S: What will happen if Russia wins? -Bring dictatorship in the country -No more freedom of speech -I believe, they may attack Latvia or Poland next (This Putin is a blood-crazy dictator) (risking peace of the European Union) -They will enslave all Ukrainians -Destroy Bitcoin community there (or drive them into black-market) -- Slashdot TV. Repost From: Jurij Ivastsuk-Kienbaum jurij.ivast...@waxar.eu Date: Sep 1, 2014 9:48 PM === Dear Gerry, I totally disagree with you! If we follow your logic we should change all boarders in Europe, simply because they were mostly other before 100 years and even more different as before 200 years. After Ukraine has become independent, after the self-distraction of USSR, all Ukrainian boarders have been internationally recognized. Even more..., 5 December 1994 in Budapest, Hungary, was signed a political agreement - the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances. This agreement should provide security assurances by its signatories relating to Ukraine's accession to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. The Memorandum was originally signed by three nuclear powers, the Russian Federation, the United States of America, and the United Kingdom. Putin (obviously not all russian people) is obviously a megalomaniac. His purpose is to show to all over the world, that nobody can stop him in achieving his maniacal Illusions. This is very dangerous, remember the 2-World-War... At this time there was also a maniacal person who thought in a similar way. In my opinion, we all, people all over the World, should come together and stop this madness! Dear Gerry if we would do it your way, I fear we will get the same result as 1939-1945, but we should learn from our history. I am an Ukrainian, therefore this short statement is the point of view of all Ukrainian people who wants to be free and independent. Currently I am involved in different help-actions for Ukraine which are directly targeted to the people needed our help now. But I would do more if I can... Re: [VBox-users] FYI: DO NOT install guest additions in F19 32bit guests
Fedora has major problems every few releases. Fedora 7 crashed under Vbox (X11 bug) . Same goes for Fedora 9 with their X11 and VirtIO network module instability. IIRC Fedora 12 had 3D acceleration issues due to SELinux. And in Fedora 15 (?) they changed kernel in a nighly update to new major version (Linux 3.0), which made Fedora totally break under VirtualBox. So not a big news, that it breaks again, for someone like me :-) Really. If you want some better Linux stability I *strongly* suggest switching to Red Hat Enterprise Linux or Debian stable. But since you have a tendency to throw that admin hat around when you feel like it, and it is your sandbox here, well, whatever. Pablo is experienced and responsible admin. Re: [VBox-users] vbox with libvirt
There was a libvirt-vbox driver ages ago. I could start and stop Vbox 3.2 VMs on Debian 6.0 Linux host using libvirt shell. But I doubt about it's current status quality. Very likely outcome is to step in and develop and maintain it yourself (as part of libvirt project). Ping us if you do. I may be interested to beta test the effort. -Alexey Eromenko Technologov Sent from Galaxy S III -- Everyone hates slow websites. So do we. Re: [VBox-users] WinXP Mode comparison
I made a comparison between VirtualBox 1.3.x and VirtualPC 2007 many years ago. They were near equal. VirtualPC was slightly easier to use and more stable, while VBox supported Linux and was open-source. Equal fight. VirtualBox 4.x beats VPC 2007 hands-down, but no comparison vs. XP mode (aka VirtualPC 2010) was made. Before VirtualBox, I was a VirtualPC user for many years... (VirtualPC 2002/2004/2007). Since 2007 I switched to VirtualBox (since v1.x). -- -Alexey Eromenko Technologov -- Everyone hates slow websites. So do we. Re: [VBox-users] Unable to run DirectX 7 application inside VirtualBox
Guess that settles it, then. Any plans to support Direct3D 5/6/7 eventually? AFAIK not. Alternatively - I'm way way out of my depth here - is there any way to emulate Direct3D 7 using Direct3D 8 APIs? No. But if the application was written with both DirectX 7 and OpenGL support, switching to OpenGL will make things work. If not, you're OOL. (out-of-luck) OpenGL is pretty nicely supported in VirtualBox (much better than D3D), although not very fast. -- -Alexey Eromenko Technologov -- The Go Parallel Website, sponsored by Intel - in partnership with Geeknet, is your hub for all things parallel software development, from weekly thought leadership blogs to news, videos, case studies, tutorials, tech docs, whitepapers, evaluation guides, and opinion stories. Re: [VBox-users] Gaming in VirtualBox with PCI Passtrough

Is PCI Passtrough present on all supported Platforms (Windows, Linux and Mac OS) and can someone recommand hardware for that purpose? IOMMU in VBox is very experimental, and currently only supposed to work with NICs (network cards), not with GPUs (graphic cards). Due to lack of VT-d hardware I can't test even that. (and due to the unwillingness of Intel to produce VT-d hardware). Surely if VBox had stable GPU pass-though support, I could consider switching to AMD. -- -Alexey Eromenko Technologov -- Free Next-Gen Firewall Hardware Offer Buy your Sophos next-gen firewall before the end March 2013 and get the hardware for free!
