any kind of sql) because almost all his users are roaming users?

I use roaming user with a ~ 1600 server, the system is made by 2

I thought it was the Right Choice, but these days I'm hearing a lot

No, i don't think that the vpopmail development is on a halt, i think
that it's the opposite: vpopmail dev was stopped on v5.2.x version when
was developed only by inter7, since Tom Collins has joined (or better:
maintaned) the development vpopmail has get a big sprint.

I don't think that the problem is vpopmail, the problem is qmail:
after 6 years since 1.03 version there's no modific to the original
version, now you always need addictional feature like antivirus
integration, more spam filters, a lot of other things... this lead to a
patch-over-patch phenomenon that is an headace for the qmail

So you need a toaster like netqmail-1.05 + bill shupp patches, but
sometimes this is not enoght. On the other hand postfix is active

So i think that the problem of qmail is its license and it's author's

No, to use qmail with an LDAP database you have mainly two choice:

- use a plain qmail + vpopmail with ldap support. no qmail-ldap patch.
- use qmail with ldap patch www.qmail-ldap.org and DON'T use

Re: [vchkpw] Problem with sharing domains dir via NFS

2003-06-25 Thread Davide Giunchi

We have to mail servers running qmail + vpopmail 5.3.9
The second server should get the vpopmail/domains dir via NFS from the
first one. It seems that just the first 100 domains are working. All
domans inside domains/0/ or domains/1/ are not recognized by the second
server. I guess this has something to do with domains/.dir-control?

No, you must syncronize
/var/qmail/control/rcpthosts
/var/qmail/control/morercpthosts
/var/qmail/control/virtualdomains
/var/qmail/users/assign

From the first server to the second server (better with rsync), then execute

/var/qmail/bin/qmail-newu
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-newu
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-newmrh
killall -HUP qmail-send

on the second server, to make it syncronize without restart qmail.

Re: [vchkpw] Re: Qmailadmin feature request

2003-02-06 Thread Davide Giunchi

I think that is time to create a qmail GPL project , qmail megapatch
project or something similiar a big patch developed in gpl'd like
project.
The problem is that patching a qmail mail server is very common, and when you
have to apply a lot of patch to the same source you can't do it automatically
and you must adjust it by hand an headache
So a project that will put all this useful patches in a big patch will be very
very useful, i think that the patch allowed must be very selected to maintain
the qmail code clean as from djb, and the best would be that the feature will
be enabled or disabled via one control file.
I'm not a C programmer but i will learn it expecially to modify qmail/inter7
tools to suite my needs (i work a lot with this programs) so i cannot mantain
the project, but help with it.

What do you think about it?
I'd appreciate any suggestion.

That says a lot for qmail's original design, which I like.

yes, patch upon patches... the same thing that other's qmail administrator has
done. For this reaseon i've proposed the project described in my previous
mail about this thread.

I agree. However there are a lot of little things (as seen in the
patchlist above) which I wish would be rolled in to the next qmail release.
I don't think that's going to happen, though. DJB seems happy with qmail
the way it is and to be honest, any changes means he has to check it all
over again for security. Not fun.

I'm agree too, qmail-1.03 has been relased in '98 and djb doesn't seem to want
to modify or upgrade it, and if it will be update i don't think that will
insert third-part patches... djb is very selective (and strange) about this.

Re: [vchkpw] Re: Qmailadmin feature request

2003-02-06 Thread Davide Giunchi
Just out of genuine curiosity, were you actually seeing problems that
required each of those patches? I've been running a
qmail/vpopmail/sqwebmail/qmailadmin setup for the past year now and have
yet to actually find need for a patch.

There's a lot of needs that plain qmail doesn't suite our needs, i can tell
you someone:

- spam prevention, with plain qmail do you have only badmailfrom+tcp.smtp+rbl.
some patches make qmail use badmailto to filter against destination, regex in
badmailfrom/badmail to block particular domain or name, tarpitting to make
large-isp with a lot of ip enabled to relaying not too much vulnerable to
spam.
- content filtering: with qmail you cannot pass all emails to an external
filter (like perl script) to customize/filter the messages. With content
filter i intend virus filtering too
- smtp-auth-relaying: useful for big lan with some external users
- smtp-after-pop: vpopmail feature that do this is good for small traffic
network, but when you have 100 or more concurrent connection to the pop3 you
cannot use binary file but you must use a database.

I could tell some of other needs, but i think that this is enought.

to control the number of connections to MySQL you could use mrtg, at
www.mrtg.org you can find the mysql plugin, i use [mrtg-mysql-load] to
monitor the query and slow query per minute.
remember to use qmailmrtg to monitor the qmail traffic and usage.

I have looked for this information in every place I can think
of, and I can still not get this to work. As soon as someone
drops a mail to, say, 20-30 recipients at the same time, I
 get these bounce messages.

I think that it's very hard to reach the maximum number of (phisical)
connections.
20-30 pop3 connections at the same time would not be a problem for
qmail/mysql, i've constantly 100-150 (and sometimes 200) concurrent
connection, as shown from qmailmrtg, to the pop3 and the system works good.

# more .qmailadmin-limits
maxpopaccounts: 6
maxaliases: 5

This will limit the number of object that a postmaster can create in it's

 clear passwd: xxx
 uid: 0

 notice the /// after 0

You must tar /home/vpopmail/ (not only domains, etc too)
/var/qmail/control (for qmail configuration files like virtualdomains..)
/var/qmail/users (for the domain list)

Then you can untar in the new server.
