Wes,
I have tubs of flies that are not sorted . These are flies given to me by the
original tyers. I have tyed at a number of shows with Tom and he gave me an
original Pig Boat about 21 years ago. I would not know where to find it now
except going through the plastic tubs that I have the flies in. Due to some
problems I have, I am not able to do that. Looking at the photo, I am pretty
sure it is not the original. I sat next to Tom many times and watched him tie
that fly.
I recently sold my book collection so I can't look it up. I had Tom's books.

Hi VFB,

I am researching the origins and possible original recipe (if this is actually
a Tom Nixon creation) for this fly:

http://chemprof.tripod.com/midnite2.htm

Is this a Tom Nixon original tied in the way he did it, or a variation created
by someone else that is distantly related to Nixon's creations?

I know that Nixon did the Calcasieu Pig Boat, but am wondering about the
pedigree of the pattern configuration linked above.

Anybody know?

Thanks,

Wes,

I have a later printing of the first edition of Tom Nixon's book. In
it, the Calcasieu Pigboat was made from heavy black chenille, rubber
legs, and a spinner on the back of the fly tied on an extended piece of
monofilament.

If I ever get my driveway plowed and permission from my wife to get out
of the house, I'll try to make a copy of the 'recipe' and send it to
you. I can also send you a chunk of the chenille he used. It's very
hard to find today.

Somewhere in my collection, I've got an original Calcasieu Pigboat tied
by Tom. If I can find it, I'll include a photo.

In the 2nd edition of Tom's book, he dropped the spinner from the recipe.

p.s.: The above is from memory. I'll have to dig the book out to see
how well I remember it.

Re: [VFB] How far off is this fly from a Tom Nixon original?

2014-01-07 Thread Allan Fish

My memory isn't all that good. My wife keeps reminding me of that.

I forgot the HUGE black hackle he palmered on top of the chenille of the
Calacsieu Pig Boat before he added the rubber legs.

And my book is the 2nd edition, the one without the spinner. I think he
decided that the spinner didn't add that much and actually fouled in the
rubber skirt. But that was 30 years ago when he demonstrated it so I'm
proud I remember as much as I do.

Tom Nixon was a wonderful, salt-of-the-earth type person who is severely
missed by those of us who were fortunate enough to know him.

Allan,
That is for sure. Mr. Nixon was one of the most humble people I have
ever met. If I remember correctly he carried all of his materials, etc.
to a show in old cigar boxes and Mason jars! I also have a Pig Boat he
tied for me at one of the first Sowbug Roundups I attended but I
probably cannot put my hands on it without a lot of searching.
There are A LOT of salt-of-the-earth type people involved in fly tying /
fly fishing, a lot of them on this list. I hope I can get back to
Mountain Home sometime to see all of my extended family again - it has
been too long!

2014-01-07 Thread Anthony Spezio
All the times I sat next to him, it was laughs all day. He had a  dry humor but
he was funny. I first met him at the FFF Conclave in Mtn. Home before I moved
here. I had tied a Pig Boat for a Bass fly contest back in Jersey. I took first
place. When I found out he was at the Conclave, I made it a point to talk to
him. We stayed in touch before I moved to Arkansas, His brother lives in the
area that we bought the house. I mentioned to Tom where we bought our house and
he said he knew right where it was as he comes up to fish with his brother
quite often. He told me about a big Brown he caught right in front of the
house.
Yes like others, I also miss him.

Wes,
I have tubs of flies that are not sorted .

Thanks,
Wes

In the 2nd edition of Tom's book, he dropped the spinner from the recipe.

 af

p.s.: The above is from memory. I'll have to dig the book out to see
 how well I remember it.
