2010-02-11 Thread Dail Graham
I agree with Jerry, I vote for my Renzetti Traveler and I have a Clouser Arm
as a accessory and it really helps with large bass and musky streamers. I
started tying on a old Herters cast iron lever jaw vise (made in Pakistan
years ago) then a couple of Griffins. Gave them all to the grandkids. I need
to update my traveler with cam lock jaws. Maybe will do that after Sowlbug
this year. I have had no trouble getting parts for the traveler. The jaws are
very tough. I agree with tying with several vises and get what you are most
comfortable with. Dail

The Vosseler is a great example of the

Two pair of jaws... why? No weight in the

Check out the Vosseler. There is no jaw like it. The
base is such that you will pick up the desk before the vise

Boy, Bob this is really a personal preference type
of thing. I started on a Thompson A vise, then to a Renzetti Traveler and then
a Regal. A few years ago I bought a NorVise. I have tied on a few others.
Each seems to have its particular strength and weakness. If you enjoy your
vise, don't change. If it no longer suits your needs there are lot's of vises
and opinions. I think Hans W. did a fine article a few years back on vises
that I think you could find on the internet. The best thing to do if you want
to make a change is to find a full service shop that has several of the vises
that you are considering and ask to tie on them. Many will let you sit down
and try them out (at least mine did). Lacking that if there is a tying group
in your area find out when they meet and sit with them and tie on theirs. It's
the best way to decide, especially if you are thinking of stepping up to a much
more expensive vise.

Hi Tony,
I own the Thompson Cobra, and I like to use it. Was my first rotary
vise, and I took it with me to the 2nd Sowbug trip (or both?). Maybe you
remember, you told me that you don't like the design.
It has some advantages and disadvantages.
The additional tools only fit to this vise, and the bobbin hanger is
sort of pain.
But you can easily lay your left hand on the vise top, and still hold
material to the hook. Helps to ty in very small materials. It is heavy
and steady.
I own a Regal vise, which is great for larger flies and spinning,
because it has good holding power. But you must be careful not to chip
the jaws. But we discussed that.
My workhorse is a danvise, but unfortunately I have worn out the jaws,
tying too much saltwater. The jaws are somehow bend outside. You have
limited access to the back side of the fly. Maybe I buy later a new set
of jaws, saltwater jaws, and the extension.
I have 2 more vises, I use them for travel. indian, but ok.
Don't ask me why I bought the individual vices. All are gifts from my
wife, so she selected them. Always a surprise, when she enters a fly shop.

Re: [VFB] Vises

2010-02-11 Thread Niclas Runarsson
Personally I think 'junior' in Barracuda Junior is a very misleading word.
It scared me off and I bought the Mongoose because of it. But when I had the
chance to see one IRL (Tony's)... I quickly saw that, between the two of
them, his sure wasn't the 'junior'. Then I bought a Barracuda Junior myself
but the slim arm didn't feel comfortable as hand rest when tying. So when I
exchanged it for the Standard Barracuda, I had both at home for a few
days... and could compare them. Personally, after having done that, I don't
think there is anything 'junior' about it... as a vise. The height is the
same as the "large" Barracuda and the width is the same as the "large"
Barracuda. Aside of the bases (L on the Junior and XL on the Standard), the
only difference between the vises lies in mass. It's thinner/lighter, but
not "smaller"... in my opinion.

The Barracuda Junior is the same vise as the Standard Barracuda... 6 months
before starting to visit the gym. ;o)

George,
I have been thinking about it but I hate to give up my Norlander. I still
use it when I decide to tie an order of Woolly Buggers. I know I can replace
it with a newer one but I have it set up like I want it. Maybe I might make
him an offer on it today. He has a couple of vises.
You mention the HMH. HMH stands for "Harry's Mad House", that was his
basement. I had one of the newer ones and let it go. My buddy has one of the
originals that was made in Harry's basement. It was a good one. The one I
had was made shortaly after Harry sold the rights. I thought it was a piece
of junk. The jaws would not hold a hook and the base was too light. I sold
it and bought one of the first "rotary" Regals. I tied on that for years, it
still is one of the better vises I have and still use it to wrap wire on
hooks when I decide to do bigger orders. It is fast for that. I was offered a
Pro Staff position with Dyna King and decided on the Barracuda Jr. I am
totally satisfied with that vise. I have cut my order tying down to just a

Tony, if you have the chance to get the Orvis Baetis vise, go for it, they
are rare as hens teeth.

I bought mine at an Orvis surplus sale and it had a broken jaw so I got it
for a great price. It was quite expensive when new from Orvis as most of
their merchandise is.

I had an extra set of Thompson jaws both regular and midge that a machinist
friend shorten for me and they work like a charm. Lucky that I had the
broken Orvis jaw to use as a pattern.

Unfortunately, he has since passed away.

As you can probably tell, I am a big fan of Thompson vises and was very
disappointed when they went out of business, although I think that there is
a group of old employees that are trying to resurrect the production of some
of the models.

The vise that I recommend to new tyers is the HMH either Standard or Spartan
models. They are made in Maine and the craftsmanship is superb and the
service is super.

Re: [VFB] Vises

2010-02-11 Thread Rene Zillmann
Hi Tony,
I own the Thompson Cobra, and I like to use it.

2010-02-11 Thread Anthony Spezio
George,
I have been thinking about it but I hate to give up my Norlander. I still use
it when I decide to tie an order of Woolly Buggers. I know I can replace it
with a newer one but I have it set up like I want it. Maybe I might make him an
offer on it today. He has a couple of vises.
You mention the HMH. HMH stands for "Harry's Mad House", that was his basement.
I had one of the newer ones and let it go. My buddy has one of the originals
that was made in Harry's basement. It was a good one. The one I had was made
shortaly after Harry sold the rights. I thought it was a piece of junk. The
jaws would not hold a hook and the base was too light. I sold it and bought one
of the first "rotary" Regals. I tied on that for years, it still is one of the
better vises I have and still use it to wrap wire on hooks when I decide to do
bigger orders. It is fast for that. I was offered a Pro Staff position with Dyna
King and decided on the Barracuda Jr. I am totally satisfied with that vise. I
have cut my order tying down to just a few clients. I don't tie for the shops
anymore. Making Bamboo rods is taking up my time.
Will let you know if he will sell the Beatis to me.

My very first bought vise was a Thompson "B" with the big Red knob on the back,
I bought that in the 40's. My first vise, was a homemade vise. I wish I still
had it. I still have the "B". The Norlander bobbins are some of the best though
the new ones and not as good as the ones Norm made. The new ones have to Pre
Load retract spring and you have to keep it that way in order not to loose
about about 8" of thread each time you load it.Once you get the "hang" of it,
it comes naturally. I am not talking about loading the spools with thread, that
is really no big hassle.

Re: [VFB] Vises - my 4¢
worthGeorge and Tony,

You guys have got me beat by a long shot!  I've only got
four vises.

I've got the Renzetti Traveler.  And, unlike Mart, I love
it.  Most of the new rotary vises have copied or modified the
Renzetti design.  Mart hates the Anvil Apex.  I used one for
an evening and liked it except it wasn't a true rotary.  That
just shows that there is SO much personal preference in picking a
vise.  (OR a vice, come to think of it. )   Nick likes
the Dyna-King.  I like the looks of them but have never used
one.  Of course, if I were a Dyna-King
Professional   ;-) ;-) ;-)

I've got an old Veniard vise that I picked up at an auction.
It's good serviceable vise.  I find it a little clunky to use.
I think it dates from the early 50's.  You can press a lever and
unlock it so it rotates, but it only holds its position at the normal
"upright" posItion.

I've got an old Thompson A (the one I learned to tie on).
Another good serviceable vise.  I probably used it for 10
years.,

I've got a Regal.  It's a great solid vise for deer hair
bugs or any other vise where you need to put heavy pressure on the
tying thread.  I like it for really heavy hooks for its
stability.  The spring mechanism for opening the jaws puts it in
the realm of exercise machines. But it's not a true rotary.*

*I sometimes think I'm one of the minority of tyers who actually
use the rotary feature the way it was designed - to hold the bobbin
and/or materials still while you rotate the hook.  And I know
that many of the folks on this list DO use their rotaries properly, so
y'all don't need to get your knickers in a wad.

If I didn't have so many hobbies to waste money on, I'd like get
a Nor-Vise and some of its cool attachments to play with.  AFTER
you learn to use it properly, the Nor-vise retractable bobbin is my
favorite. But I'd still probably do most of my tying with the Renzetti
vise.

In our club's fly tying classes, we see a lot of vises and
everyone seems to think their own vise is the best one available.
And that's good.   That way you have a bunch of happy
folks.

Hook & Hackle has a very inexpensive "EZ-Rotary"
vise (made in Pakistan).  Several of us purchased some of them to
donate to our local Project Healing Waters program.  They're
fairly well made, although their holding power is not as good as the
more expensive precision-made vises.  They are a great
beginner's vise, but would be knocked way down in ratings when you
compare them to more expensive vises.  IF you have someone who
may be interested in starting to tie but doesn't know if they'd keep
it up, this is a nice little starter vise.

So many vises and so little money.come to think of
it, "vices" would fit in that sentence too.

dates from the early 50's. You can press a lever and unlock it so it
rotates, but it only holds its position at the normal "upright"
posItion.

I've got an old Thompson A (the one I learned to tie on). Another
good serviceable vise. I probably used it for 10 years.,

I've got a Regal. It's a great solid vise for deer hair bugs or any
other vise where you need to put heavy pressure on the tying thread.
I like it for really heavy hooks for its stability. The spring
mechanism for opening the jaws puts it in the realm of exercise
machines. But it's not a true rotary.*

*I sometimes think I'm one of the minority of tyers who actually use
the rotary feature the way it was designed - to hold the bobbin
and/or materials still while you rotate the hook. And I know that
many of the folks on this list DO use their rotaries properly, so
y'all don't need to get your knickers in a wad.

If I didn't have so many hobbies to waste money on, I'd like get a
Nor-Vise and some of its cool attachments to play with. AFTER you
learn to use it properly, the Nor-vise retractable bobbin is my
favorite. But I'd still probably do most of my tying with the
Renzetti vise.

In our club's fly tying classes, we see a lot of vises and everyone
seems to think their own vise is the best one available. And that's
good. That way you have a bunch of happy folks.

Hook & Hackle has a very inexpensive "EZ-Rotary" vise (made in
Pakistan). Several of us purchased some of them to donate to our
local Project Healing Waters program. They're fairly well made,
although their holding power is not as good as the more expensive
precision-made vises. They are a great beginner's vise, but would be
knocked way down in ratings when you compare them to more expensive
vises. IF you have someone who may be interested in starting to tie
but doesn't know if they'd keep it up, this is a nice little starter
vise.

So many vises and so little money.come to think of it,
"vices" would fit in that sentence too.

a

Another one is "There's something fishy about that." I consider that
one to also be no longer P.C.

The Vosseler certainly looks like it used a design developed by Thompson as
the Cobra Vise.

The Vosseler is a great example of the fact that a vise is highly personal.
Some like it; I did not care for at all.
Two pair of jaws... why? No weight in the base, but a suction cup instead,
which just does not work on many surfaces, and results in an extremely
wobbly vise. Well, *that* really sucks ;-)

I say this with tongue in cheek. You guys from the
Netherlands like the Law Vise because the Jaws are shaped like a Dutch
Wooden shoe. I tied on Hans's Law vise some years ago, it
is nice though it did not appeal to me. If I had the cash, I would add

  Hi Bob,

What Mike said - try before you buy. That's what
I did before I bought my new vise 10 years or so ago.

But then, if you have a Danvise and like it, why
  change?
I think that the Danvise is an outstanding vise,
especially if you look at the price tag. IMO the Danvise is
better than many higher priced all-metal vises, and I tried a lot of
them. Did not like many of them, for a variety of reasons, and hated
some with a passion - the Renzetti Travel or Anvil Apex for
instance. The only ones I would prefer over a Danvise because
they are really very much better would be a Barracuda (Junior) or a
Peak, and my present one of course - the LAW bench
  vise.

This is a matter of personal preference
  though.
  :-)

I

years back on vises that I think you could find on the internet.
The best thing to do if you want to make a change is to find a full
service shop that has several of the vises that you are considering
and ask to tie on them.  Many will let you sit down and try them
out (at least mine did).  Lacking that if there is a tying group
in your area find out when they meet and sit with them and tie on
theirs.  It's the best way to decide, especially if you are
thinking of stepping up to a much more expensive
  vise.

Bob,
One of the reasons I did not care for my Danvise is the lack of space behind
the jaws.. With the extension, I might of liked it better. When I got mine,
there was no extension, I reversed the part that held the jaws that put the
jaws up away from the vise body but this let the jaws rotate in an circle
instead of a true rotary.

Mine is made of aluminum and was one of Al Beatty's prototypes. I had to wait
several weeks for mine. I didn't complain about the vise before the extension
arm came along, but I knew I just had to have one when I heard about it. It
does add quite a bit of swing to the rotation, but I still like it.

Bob,

No, it isn't necessary. I will say that ignorance is bliss, and if it were
not invented I would still be happily using what came with the Danvise.
Having said that, I think it is a very nice addition, particularly for flies
that have a lot of material that extends behind the hook. It you mostly tie
small trout flies and midges then you probably won't notice the difference.

Mart,

Mine is made of aluminum and was one of Al Beatty's prototypes. I had to wait
several weeks for mine. I didn't complain about the vise before the extension
arm came along, but I knew I just had to have one when I heard about it. It
does add quite a bit of swing to the rotation, but I still like it.

number of things that don't suite me but others love them. I have a Regal that
is a fast production vise but if your hands are bad, squeezing the lever might
be hard on your hands. The Norlander is a fast vise for tying some flies like
the Woolly Buggers. I can go on but I think you get the idea. I use the Dyna
King Barracuda Jr. For me it is the ideal vise in size as I do shows and it is
just the right size to travel. I also have two other Dyna King vises that are
smaller and I take one of them when just doing a local demo instead of taking
the Jr.along and having to break down my tying station. My Jr. and complete

using at the show.

Boy, Bob this is really a personal preference type of thing.
I started on a Thompson A vise, then to a Renzetti Traveler and then a Regal.
A few years ago I bought a NorVise. I have tied on a few others. Each seems
to have its particular strength and weakness. If you enjoy your vise, don't
change. If it no longer suits your needs there are lot's of vises and
opinions. I think Hans W. did a fine article a few years back on vises that I
think you could find on the internet. The best thing to do if you want to make
a change is to find a full service shop that has several of the vises that you
are considering and ask to tie on them. Many will let you sit down and try
them out (at least mine did). Lacking that if there is a tying group in your
area find out when they meet and sit with them and tie on theirs. It's the
best way to decide, especially if you are thinking of stepping up to a much
more expensive vise.

I think that the Danvise is an outstanding vise, especially if you
look at the price tag. IMO the Danvise is better than many higher priced
all-metal vises, and I tried a lot of them. Did not like many of them, for a
variety of reasons, and hated some with a passion - the Renzetti Travel or
Anvil Apex for instance. The only ones I would prefer over a Danvise because
they are really very much better would be a Barracuda (Junior) or a Peak, and
my present one of course - the LAW bench vise.

This is a matter of personal preference though.

My extension arm is metal. The "funny little thing" comes as default here
too, such as the clamp. Extension arm and base (if you can call the one I
have for "base") are both accessories. There is a great advantage with that
funny little thing though. It adds virtually nothing to the weight outside
the axis of rotation, making no difference to the balance when rotating.

Nick,

I bought the extension arm as soon as they were made available in the U.S.
In fact I think I got a prototype machined from aluminum where yours looks
like molded delrin. The extension made it a much improved vise in my
opinion. I can't find the link anymore, but I recently came across a
Canadian fly shop online that claimed the manufacturer of the Danvise was
retiring and not going to make them any more. I am not trying to start
rumors, but I wish I could find that web page again for proof. I know they
are quite popular in Europe. I have seen them come in just about every color
and all the accessories come by default. I have also seen all aluminum
versions, and all of them had the extension arm, not the funny little thing
we get by default here. All I see for sale in the States are the basic black
delrin with clamp and no extension arm.

Regards,

Scott Bearden

  Nick,

I bought the extension arm as soon as they were made available in the U.S. In
fact I think I got a prototype machined from aluminum where yours looks like
molded delrin. The extension made it a much improved vise in my opinion. I
can't find the link anymore, but I recently came across a Canadian fly shop
online that claimed the manufacturer of the Danvise was retiring and not going
to make them any more. I am not trying to start rumors, but I wish I could find
that web page again for proof. I know they are quite popular in Europe. I have
seen them come in just about every color and all the accessories come by
default. I have also seen all aluminum versions, and all of them had the
extension arm, not the funny little thing we get by default here. All I see for
sale in the States are the basic black delrin with clamp and no extension arm.

I say this with tongue in cheek. You guys from the Netherlands like the Law
Vise because the Jaws are shaped like a Dutch Wooden shoe. I tied on Hans's Law
vise some years ago, it is nice though it did not appeal to me. If I had the
cash, I would add one to my collection.

Bob,
I go along with Mike on this. I have about 20 vises, I collect them, and each
have their own pros and cons. I have a Danvise and can find a number of things
that don't suite me but others love them. I have a Regal that is a fast
production vise but if your hands are bad, squeezing the lever might be hard on
your hands. The Norlander is a fast vise for tying some flies like the Woolly
Buggers. I can go on but I think you get the idea. I use the Dyna King
Barracuda Jr. For me it is the ideal vise in size as I do shows and it is just
the right size to travel. I also have two other Dyna King vises that are
smaller and I take one of them when just doing a local demo instead of taking
the Jr.along and having to break down my tying station. My Jr. and complete
tying station fits in a attache case as one unit along with the tools I will be
using at the show.

Boy, Bob this is really a personal preference type of thing.  I started on a
Thompson A vise, then to a Renzetti Traveler and then a Regal.  A few years ago
I bought a NorVise.  I have tied on a few others.  Each seems to have its
particular strength and weakness.  If you enjoy your vise, don't change.  If it
no longer suits your needs there are lot's of vises and opinions.  I think Hans
W. did a fine article a few years back on vises that I think you could find on
the internet.  The best thing to do if you want to make a change is to find a
full service shop that has several of the vises that you are considering and
ask to tie on them.  Many will let you sit down and try them out (at least mine
did).  Lacking that if there is a tying group in your area find out when they
meet and sit with them and tie on theirs.  It's the best way to decide,
especially if you are thinking
of stepping up to a much more expensive vise.

Mike

Quality and Service for the most part. As I mentioned, I have a number of
vises. If I chip the jaws on my 80.00 vise, I might as well chuck it. The
company is no longer in business. I have another lower priced vise that had
worn out jaws. If I want to replace them, O have to buy the new upgraded ones
as the old ones are not available. I have broken the jaws on my JR. they not
only replaced the jaws but upgraded the jaws and the vise itself and shipped it
back to me overnight mail as I was doing a show in N.Y.I wanted to use that
vise at the show. All this at no cost to me. I chipped the jaws on my Regal and
they replaced them at no cost..

I have a general question about vises.  Whats the differences between the lower
priced (100 and below) and the higher priced models?  I am thinking of
upgrading but dont know if I need to, I have a Danvise and like it, course its
the only one Ive owned so I dont know any different.

Ooops. I sat writing on mine while you posted this...

Please note that what I wrote about the Mongoose is nothing more than
'example of difference in opinions'. (If I had taken a break to read yours,
I wouldn't have mentioned it by name.) So don't let that scare you off. As I
said, I know many who love theirs.

Bob,
I go along with Mike on this. I have about 20 vises, I collect them, and
each have their own pros and cons. I have a Danvise and can find a number of
things that don't suite me but others love them. I have a Regal that is a
fast production vise but if your hands are bad, squeezing the lever might be
hard on your hands. The Norlander is a fast vise for tying some flies like
the Woolly Buggers. I can go on but I think you get the idea. I use the Dyna
King Barracuda Jr. For me it is the ideal vise in size as I do shows and it
is just the right size to travel. I also have two other Dyna King vises that
are smaller and I take one of them when just doing a local demo instead of
taking the Jr.along and having to break down my tying station. My Jr. and
complete tying station fits in a attache case as one unit along with the
tools I will be using at the show.

Boy, Bob this is really a personal preference type of thing. I started on a
Thompson A vise, then to a Renzetti Traveler and then a Regal. A few years
ago I bought a NorVise. I have tied on a few others. Each seems to have
its particular strength and weakness. If you enjoy your vise, don't change.
If it no longer suits your needs there are lot's of vises and opinions. I
think Hans W. did a fine article a few years back on vises that I think you
could find on the internet. The best thing to do if you want to make a
change is to find a full service shop that has several of the vises that you
are considering and ask to tie on them. Many will let you sit down and try
them out (at least mine did). Lacking that if there is a tying group in
your area find out when they meet and sit with them and tie on theirs. It's
the best way to decide, especially if you are thinking of stepping up to a
much more expensive vise.

Re: [VFB] Vises

2010-02-10 Thread Niclas Runarsson
A 'good vise' is a vise that the individual likes and feels comfortable
with. I wouldn't consider a $700 vise a 'good vise' if I didn't like it...
maybe still a 'good quality vise', but not a 'good vise'.

If...
*... the individual is forgiving and doesn't care much about hooks slipping
now and then...
*... the individual is forgiving and doesn't care much about parts
wobbling...
*... the individual isn't a mass producing tyer needing high quality steel
in the jaws to make it last longer than a week...
... even the cheapest vise can be a very 'good vise'.

'Good quality' vises should hold hooks well, not have wobbling parts, be
able to last for a long time etc etc. There are many many vises qualifying
as 'good quality' vises. But from a list of quality vises, there's noone who
can tell you which one you will feel comfortable with.

I have a Griffin Montana Mongoose in one of my drawers, which by many is
considered a pretty good quality vise. I can just see it as a piece of
junk... a collection of design flaws... and an ergonomical nightmare. I have
discussed this vise a lot with Chris Helm, who shares my opinion to 100%.
(Quote) "The Montana Moosegoose should be melted down and sold for scraps."
(unquote) He doesn't even sell it. Still, I know several who love their
ones. I know several who love their Danvises too. I don't care much for my
own, but I HAVE liked it very much once. Today I use a couple of Dyna-Kings
which I feel more comfortable with... while the guy I meet every week at our
tying night is tying at the same vise model he has used for the last 20
years... the one he made in his own garage. He is on his THIRD one now,
which starts to show signs of wanting to get a rest. Which will be his next
one? Will it be a Dyna-King... Renzetti perhaps... or maybe even a LAW?
Hardly... LOL

Hans Weilenmann said it best: "One man's dream is another man's nightmare."

I have a question about vises, whats a good one and whats not? Why should I
pay $700 for a vise when a $80 will work? I have a Danvise and am happy
with it, but its the only one I own so I dont know the difference.

2010-02-10 Thread J Balmer
The Wacky Italian Broad bought me a traveling NorVise a year or so ago. Had
some issues w/ it, all but one resolved. I love tying w/ it, makes some
things easier & faster, although I don't tie commercially. One of the
handiest things is the second post for keeping the thread & bobbin out of
the way. I used an old oak cabinet door from my recent kitchen remodel to
make a larger portable desk that I can move from one room to the other as
needed.

Re: [VFB] Vises

2010-02-10 Thread Michael Bliss
Boy, Bob this is really a personal preference type of thing. I started on a
Thompson A vise, then to a Renzetti Traveler and then a Regal. A few years
ago I bought a NorVise. I have tied on a few others. Each seems to have
its particular strength and weakness. If you enjoy your vise, don't
change. If it no longer suits your needs there are lot's of vises and
opinions. I think Hans W. did a fine article a few years back on vises that
I think you could find on the internet. The best thing to do if you want to
make a change is to find a full service shop that has several of the vises
that you are considering and ask to tie on them. Many will let you sit down
and try them out (at least mine did). Lacking that if there is a tying
group in your area find out when they meet and sit with them and tie on
theirs. It's the best way to decide, especially if you are thinking of
stepping up to a much more expensive vise.
