Jeez that's not very aloha now is it?

Bev, thanks for the trouble ticket. Here's what my secret cameraman suggests:

I'd suggest a machine restart. Sounds like a memory or disk space error.
Videos on YouTube are streamed via Flash. Ours are downloaded to her
browser's cache and possibly stored on her machine depending on how she
has her browser prefs set. That's why it sounds like a memory or disk
space issue.

If you still have problems, can you please contact me directly and we
will help troubleshoot it. And if anyone else is having trouble,
please LMK.

It is my opinion that this group is very closed off from the rest of
the video blogging world. Sure it is very tight-knit and friendly,
but the group seems to have hovered around the 50-250 participating
members since last year. There must be a way to bridge the gap
 between all the other vloggers.

Interesting data, I wouldn't have thought I was so high up in the
rankings (too much time at home lately with nothing better to do, due
to illness!).

However, you should note that just being vocal doesn't make me part of
the in group (whoever they are) - I often seem to be rather loudly on
a different side of the issues.

Yes there is lots of great information that flows through this group.
The problem is the structure and limitation of the group make it near
impossible for those looking in the past for this great information to
find it.
If you don't keep up with the group, the good information will be
missed, lost forever.
I've tried to search for specifics... it was painful.
All this great information that gets left in time.
Great information that only those that continue to follow each thread
can discover.

If we agree that there is a problem with the yahoo groups, then we either:
1) Put up with the problems
2) Try and fix the problem (Contact Yahoo or 3rd party)
3) Leave it behind and move on

If we decided today to go with option 3, in 1 year, or say 25 years,
will it matter that we moved?
Will we all regroup on the other side?
Is the format of these groups part of it's own failure? The average
newb has probably been part of a message forum. They generally know
how to navigate, search and retrieve great information from a standard
message forum.
If those involved had started a message forum instead of the yahoo
group how much bigger (or smaller) might the group be?

If I say something brilliant and no one reads it, does it matter that
I said it at all?

For a while anyway, both would surely co-exist. But if such a forum
 system
had an easy public RSS feed ... there's no reason the group of thousands
couldnt subscribe to it ... the usage would naturally move over time to
which ever turned out the be most used in actual practice.

First off: Moving with any kind of success it a Really Hard Task - it's
not just pushing the one-click phpBB install option at your hosting
provider's control panel.

You have to figure out if there's anything in the structure of a Yahoo
Group that keeps people who are interested in joining the conversation
from actually joining. I can't see what that would be. Then you have to
figure out if moving to a webbased message board would change things. I
can't see why. Personally, I think it's quite normal to have an 80/20 or
90/10 in groups like these, the videoblogging group is nothing special. If
people wants to join in the conversation they should just post, if they
want to be part of the conversation, but don't want to write a post then
nothing is going to help.

After that you have all the nice technical problems. Like finding a
message board system that handles threaded discussions well because
conversations on this list tends to branch out. Finding out a way to have
replies be handled as easily as in e-mail. Finding something that has the
same speed. E-mail downloads fast, I only have to download new messages
and no fluff - message boards tends to be the opposite (lots of fluff,
forcing people to load the entire thread when looking at new posts). And
you have to figure out how to handle notifications properly. A standard
feed don't cut it. You either have to set the amount of items really high
(like 100) which will be really fun for the reader and webserver or you
end up with people only getting half a conversation because they went to
bed when the hot discussion started. It's not just solved by installing
some plugin and hoping for the best.

Finally you have to convince some people to break habits and move their
conversations over. You'll have to prove that there's actual value to be
gained from moving. Don't skip to this step before you've thought hard
about the other two steps.

Like Peter said, if you want to start a forum go for it. No one owns the
topic of general videoblog discussion. This group has had plenty of
splinter groups. Some were not so successful (e.g. videoblogging_content)
but many have been quite successful (e.g. Node101, video_vertigo,
mefeedia, blip and fireant user groups).

This is overall an interesting discussion. Myself, I haven't written much on this group for the last several months. Partly because I think there is a lot of noise on this list, and partly because well there are already loads of voices expressing themselves here - they be 70% or 1% it still is a variety.
As far as I know, all messages on this yahoogroups is also being sent on a google group that has far better search functionality. Here is the google group: http://groups.google.com/group/videoblogging
In my point of view, this yahoogroups was very useful in the very start of this movement, but it becomes ever less important as different subcultures grow. It is impossible to believe we can have One discussion list for all videobloggers in 2 years. Well, this group Will most likely still exist, but by that time I doubt you can claim that this group represents everyone doing videoblogging. I doubt you can claim that even today.
Thanks to services like freevlog, newcomers have a starting page. Someone will create those text-based introductions to the art of videoblogging, or several people will do, and people will find one of them.
I think we should move a bit away from the conception of having One community that includes everyone. Some people will feel more inclined to follow this space, while others will go to other spaces. The market is/will be Huge.
Having said that, I am looking forward to meeting those of you who are coming to VloggerCon - i will stay in San Francisco from June 8th-13th. Greetings from Oslo, Raymond M. Kristiansen

[videoblogging] The 1% rule (was: Bridging The Gap)

2006-05-10 Thread Andy Carvin

Here's a timely blog post from the Church of the Customer about the one
percent rule - in a given group of users, only one percent of
participants actively create content. Another 10 percent may contribute
occasionally, while the rest of lurkers. They look at the user data for
Wikipedia and other content-generating sites to demonstrate the rule.

http://customerevangelists.typepad.com/blog/2006/05/charting_wiki_p.html

So in my mind at least, it doesn't matter whether you use yahoogroups,
bulletin boards, wikis, etc - there will always be an extreme minority
of active participants and a large majority of lurkers. It's not that
we're doing anything wrong here - it's just a normal online dynamic.

One thing I've learned about working at an organization where most men
are over 40... they love being in the company of a young woman. My
bet is that this video-podcast will cater to middle age men... so I
can understand their marketing strategy for looking for a young
attractive woman.

Besides, don't men eventually lose the whole boob fascination eventually?

[videoblogging] Re: Bridging The Gap

2006-05-10 Thread Joshua Paul

If you look at the data from Netscan, you can get a feel for the
activity within a group, in general. From what I recall, this thread
originated with a discussion about the number of subscribers along
with the number of posts by various people, and an activity
percentage. I think the original post even inquired how we can get
more people active (hence bridge the gap).

I believe that we're not so bad, in comparison to other newsgroups
out there (and there are a lot). I'm bias, though, because I'm quite
happy with this group...even when it goes off topic. :-)

If you really want to figure out how to get people more active (which
I assume means a higher number of people who post) in this group, at
least from a scientific/sociological approach, you'd probably want to
find the more active groups in the Netscan data and try to figure
out what makes them different.

Personally, I find this group to be a tremendous asset to the
videoblogging community as a whole. People lurk. People post. People
flame. It's all normal. Where we fall in the categorization of a
 group, well, you decide.

I post very rarely, and mostly in regard to technical issues that
nobody else seems to be chiming in on. It doesn't mean I'm not an
active member, I've just found my particular role here (which may
 change at any time).

2006-05-10 Thread LeanBackVids.com

I'm not sure this is a TV thing, but rather a human thing.

Most people (both men and women) find women much more appealing to
look at than a man. A sweet voice and smooth skin is easier to
relate to than a deep voice coming out of a hairy being.

Of course, there are always exceptions but this is the general theory
for radio, print and TV. Hence why most advertising is done w/ women
models rather than men.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Looking for a video podcast hostess

2006-05-10 Thread Ron Watson

You're taking me way out of context. I was just trying to say that a tech group isn't the place to cast for actors or actresses. I would have said the same about a post seeking an attractive male model.I hate having to defend myself about shit like this. Funnytheworld, eh?

2006-05-10 Thread LeanBackVids.com

Josh, this is a little unfair. Sian has a marketing plan for his site
and simply asked for help finding a video podcast hostess.

Rather than being freindly and helpful, many users would rather flame
his business plan. That is not very communal.

Adam Quirk was the only one who provided a helpful response by
providing the following sites.

http://mandy.com/
http://onemodelplace.com/
http://craigslist.com

Why try to make this into some big women as objects argument?

It is his site and he knows what he wants. Making Sian look like some
sexist person trying to exploit women is rude.

I highly doubt anything said about women in advertising will change
the fact that women sell to more people than men.

Perfect response. It provides a valid lead to the question... and
anyone who reads between the lines well see your opinion.

I want to hear your opinions!... but it is sad to see an innocent
question/person get flamed. It proves yet another example of why
newbies may not post here.

If you or I had asked the question, we may be able to take the heat
since we know the regulars here. However, for a new person to get
crap from multiple people is the quickest way to lose a member.

[videoblogging] Test a new service that enhances your audience's experience?

2006-05-10 Thread hseibel2

Hi videobloggers:

Would you like to test my company's new service, veotag
(www.veotag.com), which enables any video author to add clickable text
to just about any video on the Web?

This means that you can tell your audience what's inside your video
and let them click directly to parts they want to see.

We think 'veotagging' can eliminate a lot of audience frustration
associated with watching entire videos just to maybe find that one
scene they've heard about or hope is there. When you veotag your
video, you'll make it easy for your audience to spend more time with it.

The basic service is free, and you do it all on the veotag site, which
gives you a URL for the clickably enhanced video. You can share or
post that URL – and elect to have that URL, complete with clickable
text, sent to search engines. Pleae check it out, and let us know
what you think.

Thanks,
Howard

Quicktime has all this stuff built in. There are even nice programs like
eZedia ( http://www.ezedia.com/products/eZediaQTI/ ) that makes it easy.
No need to rely on a foreign service that is trying to invent a new name
for linking.

Err... scratch that. I don't have a WMV file handy so I can't actualy test
veotag, but reading about makes me think it's just chapters (like you have
on a dvd). Those are called chapter tracks in Quicktime. Rocketboom uses
them for stories. There is software out there to automate this as well.
Those are only internal links, not links to other places on the web.

For what it's worth, since this thread has totally gone awry anyway...I don't think it's boobs that are the offensive thing here. I am a big fan of boobs myselfand all them other parts. It's the we've got a show that needs a face, or something in front of it...talkingI know, let's get a hottie...as some have mentioned, that's their prerogative, if that's what they want, I guess that's what they want.
I (as I am assuming Josh was) was surprised that here we have this new media, this new chance to try to avoid the pitfalls of traditional media and we have those who are going for the easy hook...skin, sex, whatever.
Personally, it would be great to watch a vodcast, episodic style videoblog that didn't have the trophy hottie...if for no other reason than to prove to some women that we do actually watch for the content.

I am not debating the power of sex to sell, not debating whether women are nice to look at eitherI am not even debating whether boobs are cool or not (they are of course...I am close personal friends with a certain pair actually)
My point is that regardless of how powerful sex can be as a sales tool, as a hook...why do we need to perpetuate it? Especially in a time when we as content creators have the greatest power. Why point at stats and figures and say 'hey it works...' instead of saying 'hm...that really doesn't work, how can we do it different'?

Yeah, I guess It's because it's easy, it's proven, as Matt pointed out. Instead of coming up with creative ways to get someone's attention we slip into the 'norm' instead of blazing a trail.
It would be great to overhear 'watercooler' talk about the latest video because of the message (remember that, the message?) or how it was presented not because of the size of the rack the prominant female had.

 Should be interesting.

Crazy how an simple question of where can i find a hostess turns
into an all-day discussion of sexism in media.

Of course no body should stop that conversation for people who want to
argue theories, but will new people ever post again after igniting
themselves on fire?

Most likely a person will revert to being a lurker and not subject
themselves to the heat again. Don't get me wrong, I love this group
and enjoy hearing the opinions of others. (If you haven't noticed
yet, I like to vocalize my opinions too.)

But there is a side-effect to having such an intense group. It
doesn't feel as warm and cozy as it once did.

Maybe we can all bring matches and rocks to the Vloggercon panel so
that we can really burn and stone the people we disagree with.

Just kidding... hopefully there is still a sense of humor.

Some of the tacit messages floating around are rather striking, and
would be very offensive but they are so commonly expressed.

Of course no body should stop that conversation for people who want to

Most likely a person will revert to being a lurker and not subject

But there is a side-effect to having such an intense group. It
doesn't feel as warm and cozy as it once did.I thought it was a very good discussion, I'd hate to exclude anyone from it. I think it's an important issue that bears a ton of discussion.
People weighed in on one side, and some on the other...this is how discussion works. It would have been great to have the person that posted the question participate more. Maybe there could have been ways that we as a group could have suggested to get the viewership they want without depending on window dressing?

Maybe we can all bring matches and rocks to the Vloggercon panel so
that we can really burn and stone the people we disagree with.meh that'd just get too messy after a while. My problem wasn't with the original person that posted the question (sorry can't remember who that was) but the school of thought that the idea was coming from. That school of thought desrves all the rocks and fire it can get.

Just kidding... hopefully there is still a sense of humor.

Yes, clearly. Overbroad comments and beliefs about women are sexism, but
the same parallel with men is just.. reality. Whether or not you *meant*
that, Charles, that attitude -- which is prevalent during this thread --
is EXACTLY why I refuse to get into this any further.

Yes, I meant to highlight that bit of irony. Refusals like yours to
speak up about anti-male sexism is exactly why it remains the
unchallenged common assumption behind both "sides" of such questions.

Mocking others works better than anger.

Throwing the cynicism back would be a better strategy.

Your anger shouldn't be the focus of the discussion.

The use of 'eye candy' to sell otherwise ineffective golf gimmicks
should be able to derail itself.

Laugh and the world laughs with you. Get mad and everyone turns on you.

Oh, Ron...
You had me at Harrison Bergeron.

...

But in regards to this SEXISM debate...

**I'm trying to put it into words**

There is something poetic about this episode.

In normal media, if someone said something on air that was upsetting
to me, I would feel compelled to respond/retort/make it right!

But in this new universe where everyone's voices are heard, it is
INSANE to try to respond to every perspective you disagree with.

Discussions like this become excercises in patience and reminders to
re-read my Dalai Lama book.

Look... TO ME, this revolution is about technology and distribution.
Those are the tools we now have to combat whatever evils we see in the
world.
So go battle sexism with your vlog. Go battle sexual repression. Go
battle censorship. Go battle racism. Go battle boredom. Go battle
your own self esteem issues.

...But I think this list should ease-up on attaching too much politics
to our tools.
My 2 cents.

Keep fighting the good fight (whatever that means to you),

Thank you Casey! The exact same arguements were made very early in
the discussion yet some members wanted to make this into so much more.

For the record, two new people posted today and got negative feedback.
It sucks we probably won't see any more posts from them.

I'm all for discussions and arguments, but something bothers me about
the trend of this group. Actually, it isn't a trend - we've always
been sensitive and defensive.

>From Wikipedia... Inflammatory, sarcastic, disruptive or humorous
content is posted, meant to draw other users into engaging the troll
in a fruitless confrontation. The greater the reaction from the
community the more likely the user is to troll again, as the person
develops beliefs that certain actions achieve his/her goal to cause
chaos. This gives rise to the often repeated protocol in Internet
culture: Do not feed the trolls.

Sadly, this is becoming more frequent here. I feel it hinders our
growth, but got flamed for eluding to that yesterday.
