Great - thanks! The RSS feed stuff is what I understand the least
of this whole process. I get the principle, but I need to look into the
process further to see exactly what's going on. I'm just that kind of guy.

- Also, you have such an interesting name, you have to tell us where
you are from!

I'm as American as apple pie. :) I was born to immigrants from
Czechoslovakia. Strictly speaking, my name is Czech - and a pretty old
and outdated name at that... Thanks for asking!

- How did you learn how to do such good narrations? I'm
a narration chicken as it would be... and I've never taken any
classes.

It may have something to do with English being the second language
that I learned. At home we only spoke Slovak, so I learned how to speak
English from television. I've theorized that's the reason that I have
the vocal cadences that I do, but who really knows? I did once take a
voiceover class in the radio department at my school, and the class was
dotted with either sportscaster/Howard Stern wannabes, or folks with a
lot of ethnic overtones that they were trying to de-emphasize. The
teacher warned me that I might not learn very much... :)

The only other thing that I can think of is that I've been a fan of
old time radio since I happened across some 40's and 50's shows when I
was something like 11. Those actors are all voice and inflection, and
you can learn a lot from just listening and practicing. While I've
never taken any acting classes or anything, I do occasionally find
myself acting in short films (hate it) or doing some improvisational
stuff. Those sorts of things can increase poise and confidence immensely.

I think that it's just one of those things that the more you do, the
better you get at it. I've done some real voiceover work (and I must
admit that it pays surprisingly well) without any real training. If you
just rehearse a lot, I think that helps anyone get over their misgivings.

BTW I think that intro took me 6 or 7 takes...

This is the device I have. I would actually say that it goes far
beyond consumer level transfer (perhaps I'm misunderstanding how you

transfer system which costs $350/hr to transfer. The quality of the
picture is stunning - you can't see as much in a quarter screen video
blog, but the DVD's that I've made for people just sparkle. I use a
Canon XL-1 3 -chip camera as part of the capture process, and you can tell.

The thing with the Workprinter is that it's really tricky to set up,
and needs a lot of specialized attention. I have a degree in film, so
am used to the persnickety nature of motion picture film. Also the cost
doesn't end with the Workprinter device itself, you have to custom-build
a computer for it, get loads of storage space, then of course all the
stuff that you need to repair and restore film.

I already did all of that so that you don't have to! :)

I'm using the Workprinter now for the project that the home movie
video blog is part of. I've used it for transferring stuff for
broadcast TV, and in about a month we will be opening our doors to
regular folks who would like their films transferred and preserved for
the future. That's the plan... I may mention it in the video blog at
some point.

The other alternative is recording the film with a DV cam set up
side-by-side with the projector.

That's how I used to sort of homebrew film transfers. It takes a
while to get the two devices lined up well enough, and because the
projector and the video camera are at different speeds, you'll get a
flickering picture on videotape. Some projectors have a variable speed
knob that you can use to tweak the projector to get it to play nice with
your video camera, but then the speed of stuff on-screen is often
absurdly fast or slow.

I'm not trying to discourage anyone of course. It's just that a lot
of people I know have done transfers at home and were unhappy at how
long the process took. With a lot of patience you can get a pretty nice
picture.

[videoblogging] Fwd: Vblog research

2005-09-12 Thread andrew michael baron

Begin forwarded message:  My name is Peter Chen, I'm a media researcher (academic) in Melbourne Australia - I'm currently doing some research on the production side of videoblogging and podcasting, and I know that you have a good audience, not just a general audience, but also from the producers of other shows. I was wondering if it would be possible to get a little plug for my survey? The gist is provided thusly: -- Participate in a University Videobloggers and Podcasters Research Project The Communications Program of Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) is inviting the producers of podcasts and videoblogs to participate in a short survey, the first wide-scale survey focusing on the production side of this new media. The survey can be found at: http://peterchen.members.grokthis.net/research and will take about 5 to 10 minutes to complete.  Participation is entirely voluntary, and participants do not need to provide any personal or identifying information to successfully complete the survey. Results of the survey, in a de-identified (private) form, will be released following the completion of the project, in about six months time.  The objectives of the research are to: •    Examine the range of podcasts and videobloggs currently being produced •    Identify the types of people involved in the productions •    Examine the effort and work put into developing this content •    Look at how the shows are promoted and developed •    Explore interactivity issues •    Look at medium to long-term business models and cost-recovery issues If you want further information you can: •    Email the researcher, Dr Peter Chen, at [EMAIL PROTECTED] •    Look at the Monash University website: http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/ncas/ If you wish to pass this request to a friend or colleague involved in podcasting or videoblogging, please do not do so later than 21st October 2005. --  _ _ _  Dr Peter Chen  Assistant Lecturer  National Centre for Australian Studies  Arts Faculty  4.23, Building B, Caufield Campus  Monash University  +61 3 9903 2648 [office]  0431 994 205 [mobile]

the reason the numbers go up and down is because not everyone is online

usually it varies in some small range

[videoblogging] When The Levee Breaks

2005-09-12 Thread Michael Sullivan

I was reading the August issue of Chronogram yesterday and came upon an
article called When The Levee Breaks and took immediate interest
since this was before Katrina hit.
It was quite amazing, basically an accurate cosmic forcast of Katrina and the levee's that broke.
It speaks of rare historical floods that also occurred during this astrological patterns.

Interesting comments on the energy that had existed in protest of the Iraq conflict but has quieted and how that energy will have a new outlet.

It also goes on and mentions key communications technology such as the
film camera and gramophone that were invented in the past during this
'Saturn in Cancer' era that again we find ourselves in. And as we
are in the midst of a new video revolution, it is quite fitting.

Not entirely off-topic ;-)

Take a look. Truly amazing to me.

Re: [videoblogging] MPEG 4 and H.264 Licenses

2005-09-12 Thread nathan.freitas

I dug around the MPEG4 LA website and found this from a powerpoint on
their FAQ page: http://www.mpegla.com/m4v/m4v-faq.cfm

Here's my non-lawyer take on it:
-If you are charging per title, and content is less than 12 minutes
long, no royalty. Otherwise, its something like 2 cents per title.
-If you are charging via subscription, and you have less than 100,000
subs, no royalty.
-If you are doing a free internet broadcast, then no royalty until 2008

Otherwise, once you have a decent audience size and are making money,
you'll have to pay up. Doesn't seem too draconion to me, though it could
become a mild pain to worry about for micro-commercial-content producers.

+Nathan

Where End User pays for MPEG-4 Video
Title-by-Title - 12 minutes or less = no royalty; 12 minutes in length
= lower of (a) 2% of first Arm’s-Length Sale or (b) $0.02 per title.
Licensees are (a) replicators of physical media and (b) direct sellers
of other media.
Subscription (not Title-by-Title): 0-100,000 subs/year = no royalty;
 100,000-250,000 subs/year = $25,000; 250,000 – 500,000 subs/year =
$50,000; 500,000-1M subs/year = $75,000; 1M – 5M subs/year = $100,000;
 5M – 25M subs/year = $200,000; 25M subs = $300,000
Where remuneration is from other sources
Free Television (not Title-by-Title, Subscription or Free Internet
Broadcast) - one-time fee of $2,500 per transmission encoder
Free Internet Broadcast (not Title-by-Title or Subscription) – no
royalty during first term (through 2008; not greater than Free
Television thereafter)
Enterprise cap - $3 million per year
Royalties payable on products from January 1, 2004

2005-09-12 Thread naturemysticfilms

I'm probably two of them, Randy (I subscribe in both FireAnt and
 Thunderbird)

the reason the numbers go up and down is because not everyone is online
every day to pull your feed

so some days you may get 7 and some days you may get 4 (or whatever)

usually it varies in some small range

ah right thanks, interesting. I am new to this feed lark and want to
understand it

 markus

P.S. i think you've been doing interesting things on your vlog lately

thanks very much for the nice feedback, I have lots more to come, just
need the time to get them up there. I am still working my way round
everyone elses vlogs and reading as much of this group stuff as
possible. I guess its just going to get huge soon.

2005-09-12 Thread LeanBackVids.com
Not very encouraging? I found this to be an obvious display of
possiblity, which is encouraging to me. 230 readers is the top?
Think of all the potential viewers out there and 230 becomes very
small. Pick any niche market and there are probably more than 230
people who are online with the same interest.

On a bigger note, this data displays deviations in readership. We all
see the ups and downs in our own stats and it is nice to relate that
to others. However, I too have felt hurt by numbers.

Either way, it is just data... public data at that. And I hope there
are more people who find it interesting than who find it discouraging.

This was originally built on a hidden page where only I could
consume the data, but I realized that this data is no secret.
Personally more important was the fact that it was a fun learning
process to build a system that reads and organizes the data. Not to
mention finding a PHP graphing program (jpgraph).

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Feedburner Counter Oddness

2005-09-12 Thread Josh Leo

i totally agree that it is a pretty cool thing, to put that data from
the feeds into a cool visualization like that. and I also agree that it
does get us to try to get more readers of vlogs...cmon let's get them
in the 1,000's.

I just worry that some people will think oh you have more than 100
subscribers, im just just have a lowly 14. I am finding some of the
best content on vlogs that only have around 10 readers...what does that
say about stats and content? I don't want peopler to get the impression
that it is some sort of contest to get the most readers and this is the
place to check who is on top this week...

nevertheless, I say keep it up there...it's not saying that these are
the best people. I just know how i felt when i was getting started, and
how it can be discouraging to think that you aren't even making a dent.
I like the idea of just a bunch of people without ranking all moving
along in a line together...but there are obviously leaders in the
vlogosphere...I just wish that the vlogosphere was a utopia of equal
readership and contentI can dream can't I!?

keep up the kick ass work though! On 9/12/05, LeanBackVids.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I use a p2p app to to distribute and receive media to a variety of
people on a daily basis. This may be a bit different of an approach
than what you are thinking, but it might relate depending on what you
are trying to accomplish.

I am also experimenting with using p2p apps with my vlog to allow people
to create rooms or groups

In particular, I have created some public groups for Vlog Europe and
Road Node 101 where people can collaborate, share and remix media.

All are welcome to participate in the associated collaborative projects
and I would appreciate any feedback from anyone on these two new kinds
of vlog posts (mainly they let you upload video comments and there is a
rich media feed for each room; you can also clone these rooms to your
own site if you like).

All the media files are hosted on small, private (invite-only) p2p
networks as opposed to large public ones like gnutilla. This is
probably more suited to long-tail applications like friends and family
than for mass distribution (but, hey, hence the experiments)

http://apperceive.blogs.com/apperceive/2005/09/vlog_europe_pre.html
http://apperceive.blogs.com/apperceive/2005/08/a_group_for_roa.html

I am also using this in conjuntion with the Podcast Hotel event, where
Schlomo, Eric Rice, Dave Toole, Alex Williams, JD Lasica and others have
created some interesting videos and podcasts that anyone can view,
download, re-mix and contribute all on one page.

http://podcasthotel.blogspot.com

I am using Outhink's free SpinXpress file sharing and collaboration tool
for OS X or Windows http://spinxpress.com

Disclaimer: I receive funding from and have equity in Outhink, Inc.
Their support allows me to freely participate in collaborative projects,
many of which are related to applications of p2p frameworks and tools
for creative professionals.

Markus

P.S. Greg, I am an iPAQ user and have been wanting to look more into
your product for my own use and how it and SpinXpress might play
together as well (I am doing the same thing currently with FireAnt,
RSSowl, Mefeedia and others). I'd love to discuss this more if you are
interested.

YEA, I set up an account there and have been testing the 3mb free upload,
they offer more space but at a price.

One is able to challenge the assignment or make your own.

http://www.medicinefilms.com/users/mrmultiple2/

That's my location, although I think medicinefilms site is down I dont know
if it has anything to do with the LOS ANGELES power outages.(cnn)

Anyway it's worth a look.

I've used some of the alternate videos i post there and cross post them into
myspace, livejournal, and blogger and they appear EMBEDDED. ( i like that
feature, untill i learn the code to do it myself)

Downside=3mb, I love to effect and have lenghty video so it tends to crunch
me into a small limitation of TIME/QUALITY...which FLIPSIDES to the upside
of the challenge of content.

I didnt subscribe to the feed cause there is an option of FRIENDS so I
just log in from time to time and catch their videos. Subcribing to the feed
subcribes to over a thousand members that's way to many videos for me to
wade throughi'm picky and selective.

Vlogs are about people first in my opinion not just faceless digital pixels
of obscurity even though I like that too, but those i like to find and not
feed on.

It is a cool feature, but although 70% of vloggers use feedburner, there are those of us who don't.
I know you didn't build it to show an accurate representation of vlogger popularity, so I guess I'll shut up now.

It's hella cool. I wish I knew how to use all these API's I'm always hearin' about.

2005-09-12 Thread Jan
Jeepers creepers, Mr. Sandy. You've gone and done it.

Just found this now and will upload some stuff once I get myself to an
internet connection - probably about 13:00 local time.

You guys don't know what you've got yourself into...

I need a bicycle vid made.

Got the sound track even.

Lots of views of bicycles and people on them.

To have someone(s) edit their wee hearts out on this material whilst I find
another story would be thrilling indeed.

Bye for now.

I'd love to discuss this more if you are
 interested.

[videoblogging] election results from Norway (off-topic)

2005-09-12 Thread R. Kristiansen

This is off-topic and I would like to just share this with you through
my vlog (www.dltq.org) but for some reason Dreamhost.com is down as
well as my own domain names. Idiotic.

In either case:

The Norwegian Liberal Party had our best election result in 36 years
tonight, and we went up from 3.9 % in 2001 to 6.1 % this year
(according to polls so far, we still have some votes to count).

There will be a change of government in Norway, however, and the
socialists and the labour party will constitute the new government. The
conservative party and the christian-democrats have LOUSY election
results.

Videoblogging? I will explain whatever role vlogging had tomorrow
before I leave for Amsterdam and VlogEurope, but I can only say this:
The four next years is when vlogging will show its importance, not in
this election campaign.

Wishing you all the best from Bergen, the second largest city of
Norway, where we will have the stinking social-democrats in government
from next month eww :P ;)

Have a great Monday!

Best,

Re: [videoblogging] Merci

2005-09-12 Thread Verdi
Hey Ty,
As far as I can tell, all the small DV cameras in the $300 - $500 are
about the same (lots of models by Sony, Canon Panasonic). I'm sure
they all have the same quality video. I'm still using a digital 8
camera that I bought in 1999. My next purchase will be the Sanyo
Xacti C5. This is a tiny mpeg4 camera that records to an SD card.
The quality is nowhere as good as DV but the camera is about as big
as a cell phone (actually smaller than some phones). I love it
because it does video and stills and fits in your pocket so you can
take it anywhere.
If you're after higher quality video, you can get a small 3 chip DV
camera at about $700 - $1000 (I think Sony Panasonic make a camera
in this range).

Hope that helps,
Verdi

Sony 4k Projector on top as Enric recommended and the rest are jpgs -
not yet poster movies. While I could see the jpg that I had there,
Sometimes, inconsistently, I cannot see the Poster movie in Safari on
Mac 10.4.2 QT 7.0.2, but I can in FireFox 1.5 beta 1. Perplexed...

Most of the movies start fast in the QuickTime Player just after the
downloads begin but not the Sony 4k due to bug in 3ivx dual pass
10.3.9-QT 6.5.2 fast start encode. It starts after the 54 mb download
completes. sigh...

BUT...

A consultant friend of mine came in this morning saying that he can't
see any of my images on any of my posts now on a PC at a coffee
house. Can anyone confirm this please as I do not have a PC setup to
test? Is that because they are jpgs and not Poster Movies? Can
everyone see the QT Poster Movie of the Sony 4k projector but not the
rest below?

What do you all think is the most compatible way to post for both Mac
and Windows? Do you think opening in QuickTime Player a bad idea
because many Windows PCs are not set up with QuickTime? Or does our
universe of audience members know to have QuickTime for Windows
installed? Just wondering how many more times I will have to redo my
site before I get the formula right...

Thank you all for your assistance.

I took your page and modified it with a 1 frame quicktime movie and
then it came up fine on IE6. Have a look at Creating Poster Frames,
http://www.mesquiteisd.org/imovie/how2postermovie.html . It says
there: Once you create the image that will serve as your poster
frame you need make sure that it is saved in qt format and ends
with .mov

 Two things I noticed:

 1) You're missing the closing /embed tags.

Re: [videoblogging] Poster Movie vs. jpg Visibility-Windows Compatible QuickTime Movies

in order to see the embedded QT in both IE and Mozilla (firefox), you
need to have embed and object tags. You only are using the embed
tag. On 9/12/05, Kunga [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
