Well yes, there are KOA's but we were thinking a better alternative would be hanging with Richard and Maureen in nearby Rolla--that would be for folks who are booked but can't cancel their travel. Nope. It was more like we were down 30. If we had 30 or even 20 registered I would have kept registration open longer. But with only 5, it was hard to imagine that another week would have made a difference. I was trying to do this with no sponsorship so 35 was the minimum to pay for the facility and hire the cook in advance. I was trying to pull this thing off just about right at cost. Which I thought would a cool thing to do. I'm disappointed but what are you gonna do? You try things, some work out, some don't. Not a big deal. We're probably gonna do something fun in STL that weekend anyway, so if you still want to come you're welcome to. It's just not gonna be what we thought it was. We need 35 people to register to make this happen. We don't have nearly that number yet--I think maybe 10 so far. So if you guys think we should I can extend the registration by about a week. People can even register after that too, but we need at least 35 to commit at least a month in advance because we aren't taking any sponsorship money for this. Everything will be paid for from the registration funds, and we're operating pretty much at cost. At this point I don't see it happening unless we get about 25 more people to sign up. Don't get me wrong, I really want to do this. But I can't afford to hire the chef and pay for the camp if no one shows up. We can still make it happen if you want, but I need you help getting the word out and getting people signed up soon. Does anyone have any better ideas? I would say that unless you are going to do some hardcore motion graphics Motion should suit you fine. You ca do a lot of really amazing stuff with Motion. But AE is still the tool of choice for pros but probably not worth getting unless you really need some of the advanced features, as it would require not just an investment in $ but also a big investment in time learning to use it well. Hey Frank, I've had a Wii for a while now and it's not the best platform for watching Internet mainly because I think that there is some memory limitation to it. If you try to watch a bunch of youtube videos in a row or a longer form video on Google Video it will crash after about 20 or 30 minutes. I'm not sure why this is, but I suspect it's a memory issue. I got a Mac Mini instead of the Apple TV. Much more versatile, but still far from perfect. For instance you should be able to browse for new content from your couch, you can't you need to add the content to another computer in your house to get it to your TV. Thats the main issue I've had with it. It would also be cool if they added a YouTube widget to it (a la the iphone) so you can browse and watch that stuff from your couch too. One behavior they must have overlooked when they were designing this was the channel surfing mentality--thats the main way most people have learned to look for new video content over the years--kicked back, on the couch, flipping channels. Until someone comes up with something that is as good as that for internet video, they will fail. Thats fine for creating video, but I the issue here is watching video, even streaming video needs to be cashed somewhere while it's being streamed from the Internet, it seems that thats the problem with the Wii. What is a professional production company? That's easy, one that is doing it for hire and is getting paid. Vloggers and podcasters that are doing stuff for fun and as a hobby aren't professionals, strictly speaking. Which is not a slight on the quality of their work--but we all know that there are many people in this space that aren't motivated by making money and never will be interested in it. What is at issue here is when companies are hiring people to produce video content for the web (and they will only do that because they believe that there will be some profit in it) then the terms of the contracts can either be negotiated one on one or collectively through a union. Which one do you think will result in the most favorable terms for the most people? Yeah there will always be that top 10% that will always be able to write their own ticket and get anything they want in a contract, but there will also be the ones that will be hired to cover a conference or an event or a beat--and those are the ones that will benefit the most from organizing. In Hollywood and Television most of the stars usually support collective bargaining because many of them benefited from it on their way up, and most of them understand that fame is often fleeting and they may benefit from it again. Unions are hardly perfect, but they're one of the best ways to protect rights and guard against abuse. Without drilling down into more specifics, I would like to say that a union can serve performers, creators and producers well. It is the loss of revenue from work that is the biggest threat to all. Just ask people in the music industry. Perhaps there will be an adaptation of the unions to include small producers who perform and create, and the rights for all can be protected. In other words, if these companies have a consistent track record, the request should be assumed accurate. If a company is doing poorly say a 60% (might be too low) accuracy or less then peer review would seem a fair addition to the process before a takedown occurs. [videoblogging] Any developers interested in making a DIGG this Podcast FeedFlare?
I just thought I would put this out there in case there is a developer listening that might like to take this on. Feedburner has a Feedflare API that allows you to add little functions to your feed items. One of these items is Digg this, which submits that particular item to digg. Thats fine for news items, BUT Digg has this separate Podcast directory that picks up items off an RSS feed and automatically lists them as they become avaiable. You can Digg an entire feed (or Podcast) or you can digg individual items in the feed. Either way, as far as I can tell there is no Feedflare that allows you to Digg an item thats already listed in the Digg podcast directory. The Digg flare that I can find will only submit the item as a new news item. So not being a developer myself, and knowing that there are some on this list. I was wondering if maybe some of you might consider developing such a thing based on the Feedburner API. Well I agree that there are problems with the law, especially the DMCA, but really with this issue specifically it's not the law that is the problem, it's the way it's implemented and enforced. I plan on doing some more experimenting with live stuff too. I tested out Ustream.tv and I kinda like them, but I'm open to trying others. I was wondering if anyone has noticed a big difference in streaming quality from one service or another. Because, one comment I got a lot was the stream was gittery or the audio was out of sync I happen to think that that would be the case with most streaming services but I don't know. It could also have something to do with my connection or the amount of movement in the frame. We also rolled tape on the camera so that we have a good quaity record of the show--clips of which will appear on my vlog. OK Yeah thats what the RSS Feed is for. For instance, if I wanted to read your blog on a regular basis I would just subscribe to your RSS Feed in Google reader. I check my reader several times a day for new posts in blogs and news I like and I read them there--all in one place. That way I don't have to jump from site to site to read the blogs I follow, or to check which ones have been updated. There are lots of other tools for this too. Even some browsers have RSS readers built into them. Most of the videobloggers here depend on RSS to deliver their content to RSS readers or things like iTunes or Miro or Fireant. MeFeedia is an online RSS media agregator. If you manage your feed with Feedburner you can track how many subscribers you have and see if someone is republishing your content via an RSS feed. There is also a service there that will let people subscribe to a feed via email. I personally don't like to get updates via email as my mailbox is too cluttered to begin with so RSS is a better solution for me. But I can understand that some people like getting email updates so that option is there for them too. I just looked at it in IE for Windows and the side bars are stacked on top of each other instead of side by side and some of their content is underneath the posts at the bottom of the page. Yes I am a contractor at Podtech. I'm not an employee, and I don't speak for them, nor do they speak for me. It's very likely that he is working under a similar agreement. And if his contract is anything like mine there are very few circumstances where they can say anything about his content. And frankly I wouldn't want them to. I don't believe in censorship. I don't know if he has a billing above me or below me. Hard to tell. And hardly relevant. I have no control how my content is placed on their site, and I don't really care, to be honest. I get most of my traffic through my own channels. Although I'm pretty sure that my content takes a lot more time thought and resources that his to produce, and as a result is more entertaining and interesting to watch. But thats hardly relevant either. I never found anything in his schtick all that funny or compelling. I really don't think anything he's said is worth all the attention he's gotten here. I don't know because I rarely if ever watch his stuff. As near as I can tell his expertise is pretty much just bomb throwing. Which isn't really much of a skill if you ask me. Yeah I am often surprised how many FCP users don't use compressor. I'm not sure why that is. I might also point out that it tends to work best if you output an uncompressed QT file first then put that into Compressor. I say that because FCP gives you an export to compressor option but that ties up FCP and makes it unusable untill Compressor is done with it-- which could be hours. Best to export the QT first then let Compressor work it over in the background then you can get on to your next project in FCP. If you are using Final Cut Pro you can use Compressor to do this (although for the Windows Media file you'll also need Flip4Mac installed) You can basically cue up all the versions of a file you'll need and let 'er rip. I tested my videos out at the Apple store. I clicked on the qt version link in the vPIP interface that I use on my site and the movie downloaded and played automatically in full screen--and looked great. From everything that I've read anything that will play on an iPod or Apple TV will play on an iPhone. My trick is to compress for the ipod and change the extension from M4V to the more universal MP4 and they play on every device I've tested on. Don't know if they play on a Zune though ... but then again I'm not so sure I care if they play on the Zune. A page designed specifically for the iPhone might be a good idea, since you have to zoom in on a page to see links etc on an iPhone. It might be nice to have a page that is designed so no zooming is necessary to click movie links. My question is why not make them MP4's too, and skip MOV? It's easy to convert MV4's to MP4's just change the file extension. I set compressor up to output ipod comtatible files with the MP4 extension rather than the M4V so they will play back within a browser window without any problems and I don't have to change the file extension manually. I've been thinking along the same lines. I was a regular user of YouTube a long time ago, I used to use it as my quick and easy way of converting stuff to flash so everyone could view it. I sorta stoped using it for the most part until recently. I decided to start posting some of my archives there. There are things that I really dig about it. Although I do get the feeling that some of the really popular people there have figured out how to game it in some way that I haven't quite cracked yet. I think that some people use bots etc to post bulletins etc to get a lot of views. YouTube is beta testing a new layout that seems like it should encourage people to explore more of a particular users movies. I noticed that I can have one very popular movie on there and it will have little or no effect on how many views the rest of my videos get. One video in particular has gotten over 300,000 views there (because it's been featured) but I have several that have gotten less than 1000 views, and almost everything I have there has been up for over a year. Hey Deirdré, I don't think a sub $300 cam thats good in low light exists. When you buy a more expensive camera part of what you are paying for is better low light performance and all the things that make it possible (larger ccds, better optics etc). Some of the lower end Canons and Sonys have pretty good low light performance but they are priced just above the $300 mark. Check camcorderinfo.com for some pretty good reviews and sample footage of most of the cameras available now. They do extensive low light testing too. Final Cut Express is really very good and a good place to start. You might want to check to see if Apple is still offering the deal where you get FCE for $100 when you buy a new Macbook or Macbook Pro. Thats a really good deal--that is ... if they are still offering it. The biggest difference between the MacBook and the MBP is the graphics card which is usefull when doing stuff in programs like Motion where a lot of the video rendering is done by the graphics card. If you aren't doing a lot of work that requires Apple Core image processing then a Macbook with FCE will do you just fine. Apple says that Finalcut Studio isn't compatible with the Macbook but thats mainly because Motion won't run on it. Most of the other programs in the package will run just fine on the Macbook. The lens I use is a .45 and it's pretty good because I don't get a lot of vignetting around the edges which can be a problem with some of the cheaper lenses. Of course it probably helps that I got a lens that was too big for the camera and use a step ring to attach it. My camera has a 43mm threaded lens and thats an odd size so there aren't too many options for lenses. So I got a 52mm and use a 52 to 43 step ring (cost about $8 or so) to connect it to the camera. Works great. A wide angle lens is definately one of my must have accesories ... That and a monopod. One other advantage to shooting with a wide angle lens besides making it possible to shoot in smaller spaces is that it makes hand held shooting seem smoother because the camera movements aren't quite as pronounced as when you are shooting through a telephoto lens. Actually it's the other way around. The larger the number the less wide it is. So a .9 is less wide than a .45 and a .35 is wider still. A 1.0 is not wide at all. Yes I agree that the XL2 is way too big. And yeah the interchangeable lenses is an inticing concept, but honestly very few people who buy this camera ever get another lens for it. And the lenses are really expensive anyway. Some cost almost as much as another camera. I prefer a small camera for a lot of reasons. Any of the others are good choices. I've shot with all of them. The Sony probably does slightly better in low light than the others. Last year I got a Panasonic AG- DVC30 which is very often overlooked. I love it and for what I do it was a better choice than the bigger and more expensive DVX100. It has more options with frame rates and even has an IR shooting mode. It shoots 30P (but not 24P--which is way over rated anyway IMO) I also got the XLR breakout box which connects to the camera with some kind of mini XLR jack. Over all I've been very happy with it and never once wished I got a DVX100. One thing though you might want to consider is going with one of the HD equivelents of these. I sorta wished I had gone that route now, and probably will upgrade before the end of this year. You can still shoot or capture in SD, with most of them and you won't be wishing you had got an HD cam after you already blew your budget on an SD cam. So the boys at Joost are putting their brains and buzz mucle into developing a platforum that appeals to the MSM and solves these problems for them. My prediction: Joost will fail. Mostly because of all the above. It's a dumb terminal that isn't much smarter than a TV with no PVR. Blip doesn't use the Democracy Player, you use the Democracy Player to get Blip.tv content. You can also use other aggregators like FireAnt and iTunes to get Blip.tv content. If you subscribe to a Blip feed directly in iTunes and configure ipod to automatically sync podcasts then your Blip.tv content will make it to your ipod as podcasts. I should also point out that this only works when the original content is in an ipod compatible format. Blip.tv doesn't require all their users to submit or publish iPod compatible files so not everything from blip will necessarily work on your ipod. Wow, we've come a long way in the last two years. Now all they need is some sharing features like source and a downloadable mp4 in their RSS feed so I can revlog it. Third... wow again... it's actually not BAD... in fact I don't want to go crazy but it's maybe even a good representation of vlogging. BTW, what was with the washed out colors... that was just weird... it's like the hole thing was digitized by putting a camera on the TV screen. The macintosh video was completely white. :) Finally, that hillary clinton video... I still haven't seen it... but what's funny is that WASN'T just some vlogger... it was created and then leaked by a PR guy at a major political PR firm that does work for Obama among others. It's a complete misrepresentation of vlogging, but I just think it's funny. Mainstream media goes out to report on vlogging and ends up reporting on their own echo chamber. YES! These are all things I've heard from them. I would also add that a lot of filmmakers enjoy the scarcity of their medium. They aren't all that interested in everyone being able to do what they do- -some are horrified by the idea. They often (and I'm making generalities here) are elitists who don't think that everyone should make moving pictures or just ANYONE should have an equal chance to be seen. Some others are luddites who have a strong distaste for anything digital. And others are old technology fetishists who think that actual FILM is the greatest imaging technology ever invented and refuse to lower themselves to working in mere video. Yup. Here is a link to a site about movies on Linux: http://linuxmovies.org From what I've read, and I haven't read everything, there are no programs for Linux that compare to Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, or Apple's Final Cut Pro. The really good programs used by the big studios in Hollywood are all proprietary software developed especially for them. I've just installed Kino but haven't had a chance to play with it yet. I don't think Linux will have any really good video editing programs for the average user for quite some time. For one thing, the installed base of home desktop users is too small. Because Linux is a more efficient OS it doesn't have a lot of routines that automatically install and tweak programs for the user. You need to get under the hood and do a lot of tweaking on your own. That's more work than the average user wants to do. As one friend of mine put it: he want's to edit video, not learn how to program the Bash shell. Thats been my experience. Print media doesn't really do a whole hell of a lot for traffic, and what it does bring doesn't last long. It does bring other benefits though. I had one minor bit of experience with mainstream radio, and television both brought small spikes in traffic. I was interviewed for local television last week, this will be a longer form interview (for local news-thats 3 minutes). Which is due to be broadcast next week. It'll be interesting to see what kind of traffic that generates. I would expect that this kind of press would be better for Blip than the individual vlogger, since Blip is a business and a service that people who read the WSJ might be more interested in. Here are the good things about YouTube; They've brought self-video publishing to the masses--literally, by making it dead simple to post video to the web. They made it easy to share (but not remix unfortunately) videos we love with embed codes. They've done a lot of this in a social way, with comments, buddy lists, playlists, groups and even video commenting and RSS feeds. Sure there are some problems with YouTube, but we should really appreciate it for what it is. They've attained a lot of the goals that early vloggers set out to do in the beginning.; to get as many people as possible communicating with each other via video on the Internet. The early problems with their terms of service kinda sucked (which I still believe are due to lazy lawyering and and over reliance on boiler plate), and I am still not a big fan of their player. But ultimately they've accomplished a lot and have moved this whole thing forward more than a lot of us have. I ain't no YouTube hater. Then along came the first commercial channel, ITV, which didnt mind putting on lots of cheap popular entertainment, which got very high viewing figures, gave a lot of people what they wanted, but was regarded by the aforementioned BBC patriarch's as 'vulgar'. I guess its not a new phenomenon, and 'class' still matters, unfortunately, no matter if everyone pretends it doesnt mean anything anymore. vlogtellectuals vs youtube, bbc vs itv, music hall vs opera and stuff like that. Plus humans are dead good at noticing differences. What seperates us, why are they different, they seem like a different tribe. Even something like using webcams as the norm rather than DV cams can create a funny sort of divide and noticable difference. I have to be careful here too because class may play a role in that - for poorer humans, webcams are a lot more accessible. Anyway I just cant use the word youtube as one blanket description for content type anymore. There seems to be 3 or 4 very different ways of using youtube. Much of the actual community/social aspect of it seemed extremely similar to social networking sites, with the same age bias and some underlying sense of a lot of youthful energy , directed at the sorts of things young people focus on. This is a strange bug in the Yahoogroups that if you are reading this list on the Yahoogroups site as messages grouped by topic (threaded topics) and someone uses the same subject line as an old conversation Yahoogroups thinks that it's a continuation of the old convo and brings up all of these old messages. This particular subject was used once before back in 2005 and it's kinda funny to see these messages about Ryanne moving to NYC and to think all thats happened since then ... Yeah it's a bug, but kind of a fun one. Get a cell phone that will do decent video and a data plan so you can upload directly from your phone. Seems to be the way of a lot of YouTubers.
