 Hey all,
I produce video podcasts on an occasional basis, and dabble with
video as an experimental media. One of the areas I've been interested
in is the growing space of live video production on the Mac.

In terms of Mac-based video production studios, I've heard that daily
videocasters like GeekBrief.tv use WireCast, while I've been playing
with the freely available CamTwist on my end. Today, I managed to try
the pre-release version of BoinxTV... and I love it.

 Here's the feature summary:
 - BoinxTV is an audiovisual mixing tool
 - for recording video podcasts or displaying live
 - overlay logos, a news ticker, or create graphical effects
 - apply transformations and filters to the incoming video image
 - runs on your Mac and supports up to three cameras

From my personal experience with BoinxTV:
 - decently short learning curve in terms of user interface (i.e.
 video mixer)
 - it's a beta but it runs well on my 17 HD MBP, even with multiple
 cameras and layers active
 - unsure if BoinxTV is capable of acting as a video source for live
video streaming (e.g. Quicktime broadcaster, Flash-based video
 streaming)
 - no idea on cost yet

Here's the page where you can register to be invited to try BoinxTV:
 http://www.boinx.com/boinxtv/
I bet you'll get an immediate invite after registering there since I
got my pre-release today (I registered some time ago).

I went ahead and purchased the FS100, for many of the reasons mentioned
earlier.
In the attached photo, that I took a minute ago, you can see the mic jack,
as well as the AV out jack, which will accomodate headphones.

So far so good with this camera, although I haven't yet connected it to the
computer, charged the battery, or loaded the software. I've got some work
to do.

my bad, this Cnet article said no headphone jack not Mic...that's
fantastic, it looks like a great camera.

A mic jack without a headphone jack is an accident waiting to happen. Yes,
 a
headphone jack is better than no headphone jack .. but unless you can hear
what you are recording, or at the very minimum see a VU meter response of
the audio, you really can't tell how the recording the turn out untill

Thanks Caleb!
From the product description (at Amazon.com):

*Microphone terminal* The FS100 features a microphone terminal for attaching
an external microphone.

Would Canon have updated the camera without changing the model number?
The reason I ask is if yours doesn't have it, why is it shown in the
description.
Furthermore, one of the tech journal's reviews mentioned that it didn't have
Image stabilization, yet the same product description says:
*Image stabilizer* Shoot rock-steady video -- even when you're at maximum
telephoto without a tripod. It is even effective while panning or zooming.

Like you, the first thing on my list is the mic terminal. Real close to
that is the Image stabilizer.

Makes me think that I shouldn't shop on a site like eBay for this, because I
might be getting one of the older ones. Best to get a brand new one that
promises to have these two features.

Any thoughts? Does anyonje know if the FS100 has been changed to
incorporate these features since originally released?

are that sometimes the white balance seems to shift between takes, but
 I'm not sure.

And you're right, I don't shoot on HD mostly, but XP+ so it's easier
to edit in Final Cut Express. You simply Log and Capture, which is
about the same time as bringing in AVIs from an Xacti (I think) then
in the time line, you don't have to render at all. If it's HD, there's
a long render process if I remember right.

My sense is that for video blogging Card Only cameras, with mic ports,
the shoot out is still Canon HF vs. Xacti 1000s

I've used both, and it's pretty close for me, with Canon slightly in
the lead due to form factor (I don't like the pistol feel in terms of
the subjects and look) and User Interface.

Hey all,

Background -
I'm running Miro 1.1 on an oldish pre-intel mac laptop. My laptop hd

Problem -
Miro is very buggy. It often takes a long time to switch between

Another way to do this in FCP is to copy and paste the low audio track
into another track. The problem with this is that you are also
doubling the noise in the track. But, it might work with the right
track if you're in a hurry.

[videoblogging] Last Next To Heaven of Season 1

2007-09-12 Thread Rob Parrish
Hey All,

I posted the first Next To Heaven on September 19, 2006, and today I
post the 52nd. A year's-worth of weekly short movies made from
archive.org's public domain footage – pretty impressive, if I do say
so myself. I had a great time making NTH, and I think I learned a
thing or two as well.

[videoblogging] Re: Last Next To Heaven of Season 1

2007-09-12 Thread Rob Parrish
Thanks Bill and everyone for the kind words. I do think NTH sharpened
me up a bit. I think its a great exercise for any non-professional
artist/filmmaker/musician to put yourself on a schedule and create.
Not having all the time in the world actually makes some cool stuff
pop out. The random nature of the images also made me tell stories in
a way I wouldn't have otherwise. But, looking back on it, all the
stories are close to the things I'm interested in. So, in the end,
throwing something random at yourself can end up simply pushing
forward the things you wanted to say anyway. Like a Rorschach blot
(off topic, but hear they are making a movie of Watchmen -- can't wait).

As to what was challenging, there were several archive movies that sat
around for months, and while I liked them, I couldn't think of a thing
to do with them. Some are still on my hard drive, not used, others
suddenly came in handy . . . out of the blue. This goes back to
working on a schedule, it forces you to keep turning your raw
materials around in your mind.

As far as the one I'm most proud of, that's hard . . . but check out
this one, its probably the most profound . . .
http://www.nexttoheaven.net/2007/06/next-to-heaven-38_05.html

Also, I won a $1,000 bucks for this one, which is a big video payday
for me!
http://www.nexttoheaven.net/2007/04/next-to-heaven-33-tapes-of-my-father.html

As to the archive folks, I've just recently dropped them a line. They
are amazing, what a great service to the community. I love these old
films and would have had a great time just watching them without any
project to feed into.

Guys,

We've been trying to improve our sound setup, but to no avail. I'm
mildly desperate for advice.

Most of the time, we've been using a Shure handheld microphone. Sounds
great, but looks stupid unless you're in the field. So, we tried to
upgrade. We bought an SE Electronics SE1A condenser microphone, boom,
and a Peavey PV-6 mixer to provide the condenser mic its phantom power.
We hook everything up, and we check the headphone out (after adapting
the 1/4 stereo plug to 1/8), and it sounds beautiful. Love it. Can't
wait to use it. So, we run one of the outputs to the camera (again,
this requires a 1/4 to 1/8 adapter). Even with the gain turned all
the way down, there's a constant audible hiss in the background. It
doesn't matter if everything on the mixer is off and all the inputs are
unplugged. It also doesn't matter if we run the headphone (stereo) out
to the camera or if we run one of the mono channels to the camera. The
noise floor is there, it's just a question of how many ears we hear it in.

So, what gives? Why the hiss and noise floor when we run it to the
camera, but not when we listen in on the headphones directly? Is there
a way to remedy this, or did I get an expensive pile of junk for my
birthday?

--
Rhett.
http://www.weatherlight.com/greentime

Hi Rhett--

The sensitivity (output) of the SE1 is 10mV/Pa which is the lower-end
of condenser mics but still acceptable. Noise of 17dBA is acceptable.
It seems to want at least 44 volts phantom.

It doesn't sound like you are getting just mixer or camcorder preamp
noise-- more like you are not getting enough phantom power to the
mics or have a mixer - camcorder connection issue. The Peavey PV-6
pre/mixer manual specs don't state that the phantom voltage is 48
volts. I've seen Phantom power at 40 volts or less on some
inexpensive mixers.

Are you going to a 3.5mm mic level input on a camcorder or line
level? If the former, I'd just use a Rolls PB224 which will provide
48 volts and add absolutely no audible noise. You can make a 2-XLR
to 3.5mm stereo plug unbalanced Y cable and plug right into the
camcorder's stereo mic input. The Rolls PB224 is small enough to
attach to the end of your boom pole and its stereo so you can run two
SE-1's. The Rolls will power just one mic at a time too but use the
stereo cable. Takes 2- 9 volt batteries (~2 hours) or you can make a
sled with 8-AA's (~6-10 hours) for the 12 volt coax input.

If you are using line inputs on the camcorder, let us know more about
the model, jacks etc. Rob D.

Re: [videoblogging] Hiss from audio mixer

2007-08-07 Thread Rob Danielson
Hi Rhett--
Please see inserts below.

Peavey PV-6 ..manual ... says +48V Phantom.

The spec sheet I saw doesn't state a voltage; it lists it more generically as a
feature. That doesn't seem to be the source of your problem, so we'll put that
aside.

My first guess right now is that it's a question of the connection between
the camcorder and the mixer. I say that because, as I mentioned in my
previous email, I ran two tests--

  (1) headphones plugged into mixer -- no noise
  (2) headphones plugged into camcorder, camcorder plugged into mixer (any
output) -- noise, even when no mic is plugged in and gains are all down

I don't know if it's a line level or a mic level input,

The Panasonic PV-GS150's mic input is mic level. The mixer outputs
you are using
are approx line level and are not workable.

but off hand, I'd suspect it's a mic level input. The camcorder is
a Panasonic PV-GS150.
For the sake of argument, though, let's say that it is a matter of it
being a mic level instead of a line level. I already have a phantom
power source in this mixer, so is there something I could do that
wouldn't involve buying some new phantom power source? I'd just like
the feeling that my investment wasn't wasted. :)

IMHO, there's no reason to use the mixer when a camorder only has a mic input
(even if we were to determine that the mixer has a mic level output). The
dealer did give you poor advice. If its new, they should accept it back. (BTW,
the internet is often a much better place to research options and find
expertise than retail salesmen and with audio this is probably more the case.)

Aside from cost, the Rolls PB224 phantom power supply ($80) has several of
advantages you may wish to consider:

1) Mimimum possible noise with a condenser mic and recorder (and most
combinations for that matter)
2) portable (DC 2 9v or 12v coax input)
3) smaller

The 3.5mm stereo input connector will accept the output from the Rolls with an
adapter cable like the Hosa YXF247 Right Angle 1/8 Male to 2 XLR Female
Adapter ~$15 http://tinyurl.com/2znndn One can make a variation of
this adapter cable that is longer (~8') long and mount the Rolls on
the boom. I put it in a fanny pack when I'm roaming with
condenser mics. I know some people recommend the Beachtek for this, but I like
the Rolls better for half the price. Another good unit for $50 is the Art
Phantom III. Same quality, and a tad smaller. I like the Rolls' 9v battery
drawers better.

Conrats on moving up to better mics and they should help some. The only kind of
micing I'm happy with when using a camcorder with automatic audio gain is
close-micing-- usually with a lavalier mic 9 from the speaker's mouth because
the levels are more consistent. Most electret mics don't require phantom
powering either.

In your long term planning, you might want to consider getting a camcorder with
manual audio gain. Some of the older models like the Sony TRV 900 and 950 have
it. When doing the research, be aware that some manufacturers are specifying
manual gain (like a Panasonic model I tested) but it turned out to be a
sensitivity setting-- not true fixed level control. Auto-gain makes the sound
pump and feel agitated and unnatural.

There are a couple of very useful camcorder audio websites on line, I'd start
looking for camcorder model numbers with proven manual audio gain there. Good
luck with the dealer. Rob D.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Microphone Recommendations

2007-07-30 Thread Rob Danielson
Perhaps _the_ proven journalists' mic for hand-held interviews is the
Electrovoice RE-50 http://www.fullcompass.com/product/296440.html
with its very substantial pop filter. Like the SM58, its an
unbalanced dynamic mic. To get around the PIP powering on the
camcorder, one can use a Shure A96F transformer.
http://tinyurl.com/2awllg That's the smallest PIP solution I know of.

I much prefer carrying a stereo lavaliere pair so I can record
stereo ambience, stereo effects and clip one or both on an interview
subject. The design is hands-free, allows the interviewee to be less
self-conscious and the resulting voice levels are often much more
even often easier to edit. Sound Professionals
http://tinyurl.com/2mvfkc has several high quality stereo lavs in the
$50 range. These are made for PIP, no adapters are necessary. Tell
Chris what your applications are.

re:

Use a Beachtek in combination with the SM58 if you need a boost in signal:

http://www.beachtek.com/prod.htmlhttp://www.beachtek.com/prod.html
http://www.beachtek.com/dxa4.htmlhttp://www.beachtek.com/dxa4.html

The Beachtek (with 48v powering) will also work with a shotgun mic that can
be put on a boom pole, another, versatile option, particularly if you'll
have your camera locked down on a tripod.

Don't have time to do the research on a mic that would attach to the camera
just now. Sorry. I prefer keeping the onboard mic close to the subject to
using an external, aftermarket microphone. Perhaps someone else will chime
in here with more information in that regard.

For mics that need phantom powering, I'd suggest the Rolls PB224 or
the Art Phantom II. Quite a bit cheaper than the Beachtek and they
have been shown to maintain quality of the quietest mics on the
quietest pro recorders. With most camcorders, all you need is an XLR
- mini stereo adapter plug. Rob D.

I'm not quite sure which disk image or what kind of disk image you

I believe that human beings inherently love beauty. The problem with
our culture today is that we have fetishised a particular version of
female beauty and elevated it above all other versions of beauty. So
the fact that a person seeking a large audience attempts to recruit a
mouthpiece that satisfies the current cultural fetish is not
surprising. The question for all of us, as makers of media, is
whether we want to be part of an effort to expand society's conception
of beauty or do we simply want to play it as it lays and cater to
the current state of our cultural development.

According to tests, I am an ENFJ... which puts me in good company I
am told like:

Ross Perot
Sean Connery
Elizabeth Dole

Dick Van Dyke

 Some detail:
An introvert is someone who is re-energized by being alone, but
when

 anxious afterwards.

An extrovert is the opposite: energized in the presence of others,
but
drained after a weekend in isolation.

Most people are somewhere in the middle. Note that this has
nothing to
do with shyness or stage fright/stage presence.

I would like the lurkers to respond, too, if you all don't mind

introverts being more likely to lurk on forums). Where do you put
yourself in the introvert/extrovert spectrum? [If you've taken

Meiers-Brigg personality test, you pretty much know already]. And
if
you're willing to mention it, where is your videoblog?

I'm interested to know if there's a higher percentage of one
personality trait or the other, and I'm keenly interested in
knowing
if introverts and extroverts make different styles of videoblogs.

Also, if you're the kind of person who adamantly hates labels like

[videoblogging] Re: We need more vlogs about vlogging!

2006-02-09 Thread Rob Reedy
Hello Randy,

Thanks for all the mentions and referrals back to me... and yes, I
have to admit that I am new to all of this and stumbling and
bumbling my way through... I did not realize that there were such
problems with my early VBlogs... but when I am posting video in the
300 - 600 meg stage... well... I have learned how to shave it down
some.

It would help to know what you all consider to be the best video
display size... and also please understand that I am working in
a windows based system, not on a Mac... so that may be another
disadvantage.

I am not too vocal as far as the written group, but I read all of
it, and as you have seen (maybe), I am not bashful when it comes to
sharing my thoughts.

As a reward for your indulgence, I actually did post a VBlog I hope
people will find funny today... to make up for yesterday's confusion.

Take care

Rob Reedy

Good serious vlogs about even interesting subjects frequently

Paul,

It sounds like you have had some challenges, and it is
understandable that you may not be at your best right now... but it
is my hope for you that this is only temporary... I do hope that
both you and Rachel will be feeling better soon.

I do not wish to offend in any way, but please know that in the

you and yours so that your heart will not be hardened to this group
or the world.

Your wife's M.S., and her poor health as a result, are in NO WAY
an excuse... but I would certainly say it is a reason that you
may not be as cheerful as one might hope.

You said ...but I know I love her and I have promised to look after
her. I have had a hard time at work due to my mind being on other
things and just lately I have come down with the flu. This I think
may have upset my film making side and therefore I am feeling a
little under confident.

Relax my friend (and I say that so easily even though we have never
before spoken), the time will come when things improve... till then,
just know that this community does acknowledge you and looks for
better times to come.

Thanks for your additions.

Yes Richard, I was agreeing with you, even if it was for different

It's all good.

No, it was not tongue in cheek. I wasn't criticising Paul, or
trivialising his situation. I was simply saying: turn on the
camera.

One of my favourite videos of the past year, was when Aaron lost
his
little girl. He had the camera on at the time, and it was so
emotional. I couldn't stop crying watching it.

We all publish video of ourselves to the web, because we want
people
to watch us. We all try to watch and narrate good stories, because
we
like the emotional or thought provoking journey or outcome. We
like
to cry, we like to laugh.

After a half dozen videos of someone doing what they do, I want to
see more of the real world in which they live, and learn more
about
them. Most of us aren't actors, so by erecting a wall between the
on
screen persona and the real you, or filtering anything remotely
personal, you're just watering down your end result, and probably
making people unsubscribe, because there's millions of other
people
to watch doing the same thing.

I don't know if I could easily perform, but I could easily
invoke
my online persona, for sure, and as a videoblogger, I've learnt to
mostly ignore cameras being on around me. We're documenting
history,
and I can't even begin to imagine my descendants in 100 years
seeing
me on video, being emotional, being fragile, being me...

Yes, if you have the strength... make your VBlog... even if it is
not the best... no one says you have to share it right now...
but
you may be making something that your future sons and daughters
will
look back upon and say WOW... what they went through back then

I'm a little lost, are you now agreeing with me?

 Regards,
   Richard

[videoblogging] Greetings to all...

2006-02-02 Thread Rob Reedy
What an exciting time to be alive... I am a new VBlogger, and I see
such wonderful potential.

Yes, I am following Rocketboom and its adventure very carefully, but
I see this as so much more... I am looking at the FUN I can and will

I have begun what I hope to be a daily VBlog, but I am sure I will
miss an ocassional day or two here and there... just depends on how
things go.

I look at the rise of national personalities such as Paul Harvey,
Rush Limbaugh, Howard Stern (NOT that I would want to be any of
them...) but then I just look at the ability this new medium gives
me to voice my thoughts to the world and anyone who might like to
listen... how VERY Cool.

I see many artistic endeavors... and I also see some sillyness...
and it's all good... I agree with Amanda (and yes I am paraphrasing)
when she says we can all be good to one another here...

I look forward to interacting... and as I learn more of how to
properly post things so they are more accessable, I will (hopefully)
become more known to you...

In the mean time.. if you get a chance, stop by and have a peek...
and feeel free to leave me some feedback. My VBlog is at
http://robreedy.blogspot.com/ (I have also uploaded to
video.google.com where they seem to stream better and load much
faster)

Have a great day

it was mentioned that "free lunches are a great thing, but i've not yet

distorting history to argue a point-of-view is akin to a "free lunch"... at
the very least, it's relying on others ignorance to
press home an advantage.

David may or may not have been "over the top" but
not by the argument that Capitalism has been around for "20,000 odd years"
try 200 years... a Capitalist paradigm isan
informativeway toview the world. but it is not the only one, nor the
one held by a majority of people.

for the record: America (which i'm guessing is
where the majority of people on this mailing list are from) is NOT a Capitalist
society... it was almost one in the 19th century (if that helps)...
today the U.S.A is a mixed-ecomomy withplacedfreedoms and
controls.

in terms of public benefit: Police, Fire,
Ambulance, Libraries, Museums, Galleries, Roads, Docks, Airports, Bridges are
generally created with funds derived from taxation or endowments.

neither of these require Capitalism to operate. ANY
form of economic system will suffice. Vlogging could easily be seen as a public
service... radio andtelevision are alreadyregarded as "essentials",
not luxuries. if computers aren't yet, they will be soon.

community channels, tho far from glitzy, serve a
function that a national network can't: they serve the community. they still
exist today because they are useful... useful is generally quite boring i admit,
u won't find an equivalent to American Idol, but that isn't their
purpose.

~

personallyi think having a vlog with
commercials or product placement would be an interesting experience. it's gonna
happen more and more over time anyway. the potential for loss-of-freedom is
obvious, but that isalways a potentialwhen SOMEONE ELSES money is
involved.

might nothappen tho.the sponsor may not
care about the content (which is quite likely as long as the number of viewers
stays consistent). it's only when a subject that is threatening to the sponsor
on a larger scalecomes up that problems arise.

overall i think it'd begreat to be one-of-the-first vloggers doing
something like that... a footnote in a history book sorta thing. cool.

i don't really see why it matters if a person does or does not use
commercials: you want the money, go get it. you want the freedom, go get it. you
want a mix, go get it. make your choice. why does only one of them have to be
"right"? why not "right for me" instead? that's the whole point anyway isn't
it?

Bit over the top, David. There have to be ads on TV to pay for
making the programs, it's not cheap. What we vloggers do is cheap, and
it's a hobby, so we spend the money without any desire to recoup it.
Some media sites probably have the same problem as TV - it's not a hobby, it's
not done in spare time, so they need to recoup some money to pay for what they
  are doing.

This group and my wife are about the only folks who would care about
this.

But I found that if you search iTunes's podcasts for either video
art or art video my humble vlog http://www.hoppervideo.net comes up
as the second found item. I was truly surprised by this. I guess
when I signed up I put those terms into some tagging system, but I
don't really remember.

Anybody know anything about how the iTunes search engine works? The
podcasts that get listed in the top section have bigger bars on the
relevance column below.

By the way, for all you Kenny G fans I just posted a little something
you'll like. ;-)

[videoblogging] Launch of deaf-blogs.com

2006-01-02 Thread Rob Wilks
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday 2nd January, 2006

Monday 2nd January, 2006

Announcing the launch of deaf-blogs.com

DEAF BLOGS INITIATIVE, UK is pleased to announce an ambitious drive to bring
the power of Instant Publishing to Deaf people across the world.
deaf-blogs.com is a free aggregator service that gathers content published
by Deaf people from all over the internet. deaf-blogs.com provides a
self-updating list of new newly-published material. The site promotes Deaf
individual expression in text, images, and video to reflect the diversity of
the international Deaf community.

Self-publishing has traditionally been focused on the written word, which
can and has prevented Deaf people from recording their experiences and
traditions. The written word has also offered little interactivity and did
not lend itself to the nuance and grace of sign language, itself a visual
medium. Self-Publishing was often an expensive form of expression and
historical record, with the equipment and software necessary for recording
sign language costing more than the average Deaf person's budget. As a
consequence both experience and tradition have relied much upon the
contemporaneous nature of an oral history which is, otherwise, left
unrecorded.

deaf-blogs.com will be consolidating and promoting content by Deaf people,
encouraging them to express their individuality and their culture using the
various emerging web technologies at their disposal. It will be an online
presence where Deaf voices can be heard.

Alison Bryan, Principal Co-ordinator of the Deaf Blogs initiative notes that
there is a vital need for such a service: Deaf-blogs.com offers
co-ordination for online Deaf content, and encourages responsibility to
publish their own thoughts, away from deaf organisations. To date much of
online content has been via organisations, which in no way allows autonomy
and empowerment.

As well as providing a portal to new Deaf blog content, the web site offers
support to people looking to create their own online web presence. By
offering practical step-by-step guides to creating and managing a blog or
videolog (see What can this do for me? below), we hope to increase the
number of Deaf voices online and publicise greater recognition of their
needs. Jen Dodds, a well known Deaf activist and writer comments: I hope
deaf-blogs.com means more Deaf people think about self expression via blogs
plus video blogging, and that 2006 sees an explosion online activism through
the creation of Deaf blogs.

What can this do for me?

Blogging is the cultural phenomenon of recent years and a powerful resource
for Deaf people. A blog is a personal web site where a person can share
their thoughts and experiences, and potentially influence the way we think
about the world around us.

Deaf-Blogs offers readers the ability to connect, read and interact with
thousands of blogs from Deaf people around the world (we display a
constantly updating list of blogs). Not only that, but we also provide free
guidance and support to Deaf visitors who want to join the 'blogosphere'.

For BSL users we also support a pioneering form of blogging called Vlogging
(or videologging) where Deaf people can add filmed content to their blog.
This endeavour has the support of leading internet authorities including
that of renowned social networking commentator, Marc Canter. He says of the
drive toward the preservation and delivery of signed content by
deafblogs.com that: The world of Deaf people is another great example of
Vlogging being utilized by a particular context. By knowing and understating
who their constituency is, www.deaf-blogs.com will be able to provide
compelling experiences and relevant services to their own Long Tail..

Notes for Editors

* The website has been developed by Deaf Blogs Initiative, a group led by
activist Alison Bryan working with three leading Deaf technology
specialists: Joseph Gwynne-Jones, Rob Wilks and Ben Fletcher.

[videoblogging] Re: Best quality video?

2006-01-02 Thread Rob Parrish
I don't know if DiVA involves quality loss. I use it to get small
sized files up to TV resolution because I put my stuff on TV as well
as on the internet. It looks good, and the files get much much
bigger. So, I assume I'm doing the oposite of compressing (expanding?).

You did remind me that on the archive.org FAQs it does mention that
you can use Cleaner to do the conversion work to. I don't own Cleaner
so I didn't pursue that.

again
(albeit into another file type)? I'd rather not lose any more
quality than
has already been lost in compressing to MPEG2 in the first place.
Please
let me know if I'm wrong about this.

What I've discovered in the past couple of days: I *may* be able to
convert
the MPEG2 file to DV using a tool called MPEG Streamclip, but I'd
still need
 to purchase Apple's Quicktime MPEG2 thing to do so.  That's another $20;
perhaps there's another (less expensive) way?

Well Harold, you ask a complicated question. If you're just going to
compress for the web, I don't know the best answer. However, if you
want to have a 720x480, 30fps version, then MPEG2 is the way to go.
The conversion process is a bit time consuming, but you end up with a
very good looking movie. It can be done with freeware. Let me know
if that is is what you want and I'll tell you how to do it.

[videoblogging] Re: iTunes xml tags

2005-12-22 Thread Rob Parrish
Hey Ron:

I think Apple might be having an issue. My art and info appeared this
a.m. . . . but now its gone. I did post a review during that brief
wonderful moment that I existed in the eyes of iTunes, maybe Steve
Jobs didn't like it. :-) (for the record, I identified myself as the
site's author in the review -- speaking of which, the review was
simply selected quotes from comments left on the site. I identified
them as comments, but did not reveal the authors. I assume its ok to
use comments for publicity. What says the group?)

[videoblogging] iTunes xml tags

2005-12-21 Thread Rob Parrish
I'm trying to get my feed up to speed with iTune's demands. This is
probably a dumb question, but here it goes. So, Apple wants a bunch
of tags inserted into the feed. Do I do that through Blogger,
Feedburner, (I don't see a way that these deplay the code of the feed)
or do I need to open the atom file that is on my web server and add
the tags there? If I do the last option, will that mess up the auto
updating functionality of the feed? Will the tags survive the next
time a do a post? Thanks for the help.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: War On Text

2005-11-23 Thread rob
does anyone study history?

i see comments stating implicitly or explicitly that video will (note use of
future tense, that's a clue folks) have the same profound effect as writing.
ha ha ha.

the effect of the masses being taught to read/write changed EVERYTHING in
europe (i was born there, now live in north america, so i'll leave my
observations to these places)... no western culture would exist in any
recognizable form without writing/print... this is not an exaggeration: read
about events following the black plague, memory cathedrals, martin luther,
etc and it's affect on society. (one interesting example is none of us can
remember much compared to those who lived before)

video's not close to that and is unlikely to be: no fundamental institutions
have yet formed from the existence of video... no social hierarchies of any
importance (videobloggers are clearly more important than anyone else on the
planet but leaving that aside...) have developed either... yes, hollywood
generates celebrities people who are accorded higher social status in a
mundane way, but this phenomena has been around a very long time, it isn't
new; gladiators for instance.

but even more importantly...

in my opinion, before video will replace text, something will replace video.

new technologies have already been developed that are more likely to play a
large role in communications over this century... here's a couple i recently
read:

how about the one that can directly interface to the brain (new scientist
reports on electroencephalography with quadriplegics able to make a
wheelchair move forward, left or right)... considering the full implications
of devices like this, it's not hard to see where the real revolutions will
occur in communications.

developments in hormones allow people to bottle emotional states. (look up
Oxytocin's and the University of Zurich)... what artist wouldn't want to get
their hands on something like that? (not to mention politicians, frustrated
lovers, etc)

UPSIDE
so easy to be critical... one really should reveal one's own preferences.

where i do feel video steps up and above is regarding tangible experiences.
reading travel books has nothing on even the most amateur video footage
taken in some far-off location. the subtle interplay of facial features, etc
gives clear messages that'd never translate as well in text form.

my videoblogs otherwise are usually quite amateurish technically, but they
capture an emotion nicely... more pro ones tend to be overly concerned with
polish rather than content. there's also a sense of lack-of-control (i
dunno why it worked out so good, but check it out! type of blogs) which i
enjoy. serendipity.

newscast blogs are ok, but the regard i have for them stems from their
social function... they blog stuff corporate newscasters won't touch, or
think is unimportant, or is unsuited to their political agenda.

blogs in the omg i'm so special style are ok in small doses... easy to
relate to cuz hey! I am the most important person in my universe... and i
would hope everyone else feels the same about themselves in their
universe... but i'll only watch a few before moving on to someone else.

CONCLUSION
video's just another tool in the arsenal we have to communicate.

a statement like war on text implies such a narrow vision of what
experiences are worth sharing... i can't imagine how drab and dull things
would be, tho if i go back and re-read 1984 perhaps i'll have an idea.

later
rob

ps ~ someone wrote that video is non-linear... only from a creators
perspective... the audience has no such luxury. whereas text? there's a
thing called skim-reading. works great.

text requires far less attention than video... do the test: glance at a
paragraph, glance at a video. which one do you feel confident you understand
the creators intent?

and hyperlinks? they are the embodiment of non-linear, allowing a person to
go back/forth at will to whatever section they wish. video has nothing as
effective... hotspots are a cool idea, but there's a lack of grace regarding
how they're incorporated into video footage. hypertext links otoh can be
ignored or used with no distraction to the reading material.

pps ~ war on text? ick. must've been a joke i missed cuz i find it a
tasteless phrase.

ppps ~ i'll go back to lurking now.
