Recently my phone has started switching from regular to speaker phone while
I'm on a call. I'll have it to my ear and it just switches. I try to keep it
right against my face thinking maybe it's not close enough, but sometimes
the phone works fine and sometimes it just flip flops between

Heil, I heard the same thing. A person from Apple said that it is not a good
idea to hold down the power and the home button and do that type of reset,
because it can damage the operating system. That reset is only supposed to be
used if the phone freezes up. I am not trying to be argumentative,
I'm curious, why does this have to be a reset? The iPhone is still
responding so wouldn't a power down followed by a power on accomplish
the same thing? I'd think the only reason to do a reset is if the
operating system isn't responding at all anymore.
