RE: Navigating google sheets

2017-06-15 Thread Richard Turner
That is the same way Excel works. Each workbook usually defaults to having
three sheets.
Your's is probably all on that first sheet.
There is a swipe up with three fingers command for the braille display.
It is either spacebar+dots 3,4,5,6 or spacebar+dots 1,4,5,6.
But that is going to take an awful lot of swipes to get to row 169.

I've not used Sheets so I don't know if there is a go to cell option somewhere,
but that might be worth a Google search.

Hello,

Swift Playgrounds is an iPad-only app. It works well though; I'm having fun
going through the course. David Woodbridge does a couple of wonderful demos of
it on his iSee podcast.

Re: Navigating google sheets

2017-06-15 Thread Brandon Olivares
Okay, basically put focus on the sheet, then scroll down (three fingers swipe
up) until you are at the row you need. If you touch a cell, it'll announce the
coordinates of that cell, and the contents of it.

Read the info you need, then to insert your link, double tap the cell, then
immediately beneath the sheet you'll hear a field that says “formula bar”, and
it'll say “text field”. Double tap on that and add your link. After you insert
it, flick right and double tap on confirm.

rows and columns. If you want to edit one, I believe you double tap it, then
there should be a text field at the bottom you double tap to edit.

here's what i need to do but I cant work out how.

I need to go to row 169 and get the info from there that I need. Then, once I
have written my google doc, I need to place the link to that doc on that row in
a certain column.
How do I do that?

RE: Doubts with the new iPad pro 10.5.

2017-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Mario,

Agreed, I doubt it will make much if any difference for a Voiceover user except
that if it indeed results in better battery life we of course also benefit from
that. Here a bit more along the lines of what Daniel already pointed out in the
form of an article from iMore:

Apple's new adaptive screen refresh technology is going to change how we look
at devices
If I had to pick the WWDC announcement that made my week, it'd have to be
Apple's newest display technology, ProMotion. Essentially, it makes the new
iPad Pro feel faster without compromising on battery life. But simply saying
"faster" doesn't do justice to how ProMotion is going to not only improve the
iPad Pro experience — or the experience of Apple's other computing platforms in
the future.
Here's everything you ever wanted to know about ProMotion — and then some.
(Because I can't help but geek out about display technology.)

Apple describes it as such:
A new [display] technology that delivers refresh rates of up to 120Hz for fluid
scrolling, greater responsiveness and smoother motion content. With ProMotion,
Apple Pencil is even more responsive with an industry-best, 20-millisecond
latency for even more fluid and natural drawing. ProMotion also improves
display quality and reduces power consumption by automatically adjusting the
display refresh rate to match the movement of the content.

In English: ProMotion makes your scrolling look smoother, text crisper, and
drawing virtually lag-free. And it does it all while saving battery life and
keeping your video from looking like a bad HDTV set.

Is ProMotion hardware or software?
It's a hardware component of Apple's new iPad Pro displays, though APIs in iOS
help make it adaptive.

If it is not this time, I and millions of people will be very

Apple has to come with all in this iPhone 8.
a big screen with powerfull battery and the best technology of top.
That is what we all want and hope...
I hope more RAM with 4GB and of course a new processor Apple 11.

But it of course all depends on what you do, if mostly it's consuming media,
email, maybe Skype or Facetime and so on it might be OK. I use a lot of
business applications which require Windows and there is just no way any iOS or
Android tablet at this point could replace a Windows laptop for me.
I bought a very nice laptop with a touch screen last fall and end up never
using the touch screen because when it comes to Windows I am just so used to
doing everything with the keyboard.

technical limitation of the technology.

Will this change with the coming of IOS 11?

A BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO YOUR PHONE'S HEALTH APPS | POPULAR SCIENCE

2017-06-15 Thread M. Taylor
A beginner's guide to your phone's health apps

How to use Google Fit or Apple Health.
By David Nield 6 hours ago

Both iOS and Android track basic activities automatically.

A plethora of health trackers promise to help you get in shape. But before
you start browsing the options, check out the apps built right into your
phone. Google Fit and Apple Health, which both launched in 2014 on,
respectively, Android and iOS, track your activity through sensors on the
phone itself or through compatible wearables.

While they share a lot of the same basic features, the two apps do differ in
ways that go beyond the interface. Google Fit provides a more basic
steps-and-activity counter, and is available on the web as well as Android
phones and tablets. Apple Health gives you a more comprehensive, full-on
health monitoring service, but only works on Apple devices.

If you've never opened up these apps on your phone before, now's your
opportunity. You can be tracking your steps and counting your calories in no
time, using the device you already have-and getting fitter along the way.
Google Fit setup

Fire up the Google Fit app-if it's not already on your phone, you can
download it here-and log in with your Google account. Once you enter a few
personal details about yourself, you'll be up and running (quite literally,
if you want to celebrate with a jogging session).

You don't need to do anything special to activate or enable Google Fit. It
works automatically in the background: As long as you keep your phone on
you, it will measure your steps as you walk, run, and cycle. If your device
misses something, or you put down your phone during a workout, you can add
activities manually. Just open the app and tap the plus icon in the bottom
right corner of the interface.

To start using the app more mindfully, try setting goals. Tap the plus icon,
choose Add goal, and you can set a target for yourself. These targets could
include, for example, walking a given number of steps, remaining active for
a certain amount of time, or doing several different activities-it's really
up to you. Setting goals makes the Google Fit interface a bit more
interesting, as the app will track your progress and let you know how well
you're doing.
Google Fit

Google Fit sticks to the basics but does them well.

Speaking of the interface, the front screen, called Home, summarizes how
much activity you've done today and how near you are to hitting your goals.
Scroll down the page for a more detailed readout that includes recent
highlights, like that 10-mile hike you took over the weekend.

For even more detail, you can switch to the Timeline. Access it through
through the main Google Fit menu, which you open by tapping the hamburger
button in the top left corner. Timeline breaks down all of your recent
activities individually. You can tap on any of them for more details, and
even view your walks, runs, and bike rides on a map (if your phone was
logging GPS coordinates at the time).

Google Fit can also give you real-time statistics during an activity. Hit
the plus icon, then Start activity, and then select your activity of choice.
You'll see time, steps, calories, distance, and so on as you go. If you're
walking, running, or cycling, you'll hear an audio prompt every time you hit
a mile, although you can disable this digital cheering section in the app
settings if you prefer.

You can also access this information through a web interface. This Google
Fit view shows your goals up top and displays a more detailed breakdown
lower down, but doesn't split the Home and Timeline into separate sections.
You can scroll back through your history, and again you have the option to
add new activities manually via the plus icon.
Taking Google Fit further

Having your phone track your activities as you go is all well and good, but
you don't necessarily want to take your device with you to tackle, say, a
10k run or a soccer game. That's why you should consider syncing a wearable
tracker with your Google Fit account.

Android Wear smartwatches are the obvious place to start: Any Android Wear
watch can track your steps and activity, and some come with embedded GPS
(check the device specs for details) to let you plot your route on a map.
You won't need to carry your phone everywhere with you-instead, everything
syncs up once you get back home.

A number of other wearables also play nice with Google Fit, including bands
from Xiaomi, Under Armour, and Misfit. Unfortunately, Fitbit hasn't made its
trackers compatible with either Google Fit or Apple Health-and of course the
Apple's Watch works with its own platform rather than Google's.
Android Wear

Plenty of Android Wear devices plug right into Google Fit.

You can also pipe extra data into Google Fit from other apps. Sleep As
Android, for instance, can track your sleep and send the data to Google Fit,
while Calorie Counter will help you log your eating habits. Google Fit also
works with popular running and cycling apps

The only place I could ever imagine using a touch screen for a Windows machine

And, as a totally blind person, I don't personally want an iPad. Maybe, if
someone gave me one, an iPad Mini for the extra battery life, but I find the
extra screen size more annoying than useful.

Jeez, it took me a while to figure it out, and I truly apologize big time
Sieghard!But hey, I’m blind; LOL!

Mikayla? BTW: last Halloween I attended a local spaghetti dinner fundraiser
for the blind, held on the Saturday of Halloween weekend 2016. I entered the
haloween costume contest, and took home the grand prize. My award winning
costume? I got completely dressed up in woman’s clothing, heels, hose and a hot
skirt suit, with short auburn colored wig and appropriate make up, and went as
a “Blind Date”!

What a PITA walking around in 3 inch heels the whole night! My hat goes off to
the ladies out there, that pull this off all the time for us guys!
I appreciate it big time ladies!

What I think she is saying is; if you purchase the version where you own it, no
subscription, it only costs $199.00. Not the original $299.00. I think I’m

Hi,

For those who don't get emails from Sendero, below is an announcement I just
received regarding an update to the Seeing Eye GPS (app.
Also, the "XT" version which is the one you purchase outright for $299 US is
currently $100 off and available for $199 US or $279.99 Canadian.
If you can find a 20% off deal on iTunes gift cards this is pretty attractive,
you would get it for $159.99 US or $223.99 Canadian, just a bit more than what
you would pay for 2 years of subscription. Here is the What's New info:

Thanks to continued underwriting from Guide Dogs NSW ACT Australia and a
federal grant from the National Institute of Disability, Independent Living and
Rehabilitation Research, we have major feature improvements in the Sendero
version 3.0 iPhone GPS apps, including Waypoint Routes, new POI user interface
and Uber compatibility!

Warning: Before you install the update, share your user points of interest with
your email; otherwise, they will be deleted from the app. You can then click on
the attachment of the email on your phone to import them into the new version.

What's New in Version 3.0

1. Added Waypoint Routes
Similar to Manual "Breadcrumb" routes that are in our other Sendero GPS
products. All you have to do to create a
Waypoint route is walk the route and the app will save points along the way.
Waypoint routes are helpful when there are no street maps, as in a park or
campus.

2. Redesigned the Points of Interest user interface to make searching for
POIs more streamlined.
You can now use the Nearby POI Shortcut Gesture (double tap, hold and release
on the POIs Menu button) or go to the POI Search Screen to search for a
specific POI or a POI category.
Unless you select a category, the search will be in All categories.

3. If a POI search finds no results, in addition to expanding or
cancelling the search, you can now select switch POI source
Your default POI Source will not change if you switch POI Sources for a POI
search. You can set your default POI Source in General Settings.

4. Added indoor navigation support, Beacons button on the POI screen,
as part of our current federal grant from the National Institute of Disability,
Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research. Beacon coverage is limited to
a few locations in the US, UK, Germany and Turkey. We

When I post something, facebook asks me if I want to send the post to my 8

Hi. No, ProMotion is a strictly visual adjustment. It will not affect voiceover
users in the slightest. There's no need to even worry about it. All the
technology does this tell the iPad went to refresh the screen based on what
you're doing with it. It's mainly meant for the pencil, and video content.

2. Does this new screen support the new 3D force touch feature?
I did a google search about this feature in this new iPad, and what I
read is that this new screen does not support 3D force touch.
Will this change with the coming of IOS 11?
Please, what are your thoughts.
thanks.
cheers.

Hello,
I haven't had this problem. Maybe it's a problem with Facebook itself. Not
sure. Have you tried logging out of your account and logging back in again?
Maybe the Facebook accessibility team can help.
I wish I knew more to help you. By the way, I'm also using the latest versions
of everything. That means Facebook and iOS in this case.
Thanks, and I wish I could be of more help.

RE: Doubts with the new iPad pro 10.5.

2017-06-15 Thread Mike Ulrich
I always thought an IPhone with the smallest of screen would be great for me.
Easier to carry, particularly in my front pocket of pants, jeans or shorts. No
need for a bigger screen to see the icons, or read pages ETC.
But the one big thing I've noticed on my 128 gig SE, is that whenever I have to
use the 4 finger single tap on the bottom of the screen; to get down to the
bottom of a page, I'm just about always hitting the side, thus only enacting a
three finger single tap!

Oh well's, you just gotta take da Good wit da Bad I spose?
I still like a smaller screen IPhone.

Re: Doubts with the new iPad pro 10.5.

2017-06-15 Thread Wayne Merritt
Since we are still in the beta period, there's no way to know how well
VoiceOver will work with the new Promotion way of moving multiple
items on screen. Unless that is you get the public beta, or wait until
iOS 11 is released in September. Outside of those things, anyone using
the developer betas cannot comment. Personally, I was amazed at how
well moving apps became when iOS 10 was released last year, taking the
concepts to a different level than we had in iOS 9 and earlier. So, I
have no doubt that Apple will make Promotion work as well.

that is, adjustment behind the scenes, not something the user will do. So
why wouldn't have an effect on VoiceOver? I guess time will tell, but I

the iPad will not support 3d Touch. The reason is tat the screen is to
big. It is a technical limitation of the technology.

I did a google search about this feature in this new iPad, and what I

Will this change with the coming of IOS 11?
Please, what are your thoughts.

We will be working to
expand this coverage over the course of the grant, so stay tuned!

5. Added Uber to Route type options

The app will send your location and destination to Uber so that you can
schedule an Uber ride.

6. Added an additional setting for the Shake sensitivity

You can now choose Hard, Medium or Off.

Based on what I have read, certainly have no personal experience, it seems like
this promotion thing is something that's automatically going to happen, that
is, adjustment behind the scenes, not something the user will do. So why
wouldn't have an effect on VoiceOver? I guess time will tell, but I would be
shocked if it made any difference at all to blind voiceover users.

Well, as I said, the technology is here, just not widely available.

Do a google search for iBeacons, if you add BlindSquare to the search you can
find lots of stories about how they are being used.

Apparently, the London Underground subway system is installing them, the San
Francisco Airport, a mall I think in Toronto, Canada, and more.

You might also search for Seeing Eye and iBeacons, but that is so new, I’m not
sure what you will find.

Once you have more information about them, you might want to talk to your local
mall manager to see if they would look into installing them as an ADA provision.

Not too long ago GPS would be considered a miracle but it’s widely available

Lets hope the sky rocketing science will come up with something helpful soon

Hi,

I know you are probably kind of kidding, but no, that technology does not exist
yet.

That would be possible with the beacon system that BlindSquare works with as
well as the one Seeing Eye has started incorporating into their latest update.

But, I suspect it will take years and years before very many malls, airports,
etc., install beacon systems that will be usable with particular apps.

Besides, I would probably ask anyway even if a beacon announced the store I
wanted because I don’t trust electronics to be that precise.

I should have said that the one time purchase is actually called Seeing Eye GPS
XT, and is $199, but yes that is a lifetime, one time payment.

If you were planning to use it for four years, it is a better buy.

But whether it is good enough or is guaranteed to be around, I cannot say.

I find that GPS is very much a personal preference item.

I don't travel into new areas much any more, so I am quite content to use
Google Maps or MapQuest for turn-by-Turn directions.

I also like Blind Square, set to streets only.

I have not spent much time with the new Lazarillo app that is free that does
some of what Blind Square does.

Nearby Explorer is also very good and includes speaking the names of the
streets you are crossing for a one time charge of $79.

Plus, Nearby Explorer stores the maps right on your iPhone so it does not need
an internet connection to work, while all the others I've mentioned do require
an internet connection because the maps are on a server. That means though,
that you need to have at least 3 GB of space for the maps on your device.

There are more factors of course, but each person has different needs and
preferences, so in my opinion, no one can say which app is the best for another
person.

I hope all this is useful.

Hi Richard,

I don’t think Anna was joking, but of course you are correct in saying that
this is not something that is currently possible with GPS technology alone
especially if you are indoors where the signal is less precise or may even be
non-existant as, for example, it would be the case in an underground mall or
most likely the first floor of a multi-level mall.

I think also it will take a few more years, but I also think that this is
coming and that it will first happen at airports where often even sighted
people get confused especially at airports with multiple terminals which are
often far apart. Many asian airports such as Seoul, Hong Kong, Tokyo and so on
require you to take a train from one terminal to another and they might be as
much as a mile or so apart.

RE: Doubts with the new iPad pro 10.5.

2017-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Promotion is an iOS 11 feature and while I assume Apple will figure out how to
make this accessible as much as it can be made accessible, we won't know how
useful it is for visually impaired users until iOS 11 is out of the bag. Once
the public beta for iOS 11 is available at the end of June or beginning of July
you could always buy the iPad then, install the iOS 11 public beta and try it
out. I believe you have 30 days to return the iPad if you don't like it.
Just out of curiocity, what is it that makes you want to buy an iPad?

Sieghard

What I think she is saying is; if you purchase the version where you own it, no
subscription, it only costs $199.00. Not the original $299.00. I think I’m
correct with this.

Countries and regions available as of 2017:
USA, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Canada, UK, France, Ireland, New Zealand,
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Lithuania, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey and
Israel.

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Seeing Eye GPS version 3.0 with new features

2017-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard

Hi,
I know you are probably kind of kidding, but no, that technology does not exist

Later,
Richard

Thank you very much Richard!
You right – everybody has own needs and preferences, and each GPS does things a
bit differently than others although the basic idea is the same.
I’ve been looking for GPS that announces the name of the store I’m entering.
This is very crucial when walkin in the mall or at a shopping plaza.
Are you aware of any GPS with such capability? g

Richard

There is a yearly subscription that you have been paying. There is a three year
subscription for $130, or a one time payment of $299, which is on sale right
now for $200 that is not a subscription, but an outright purchase so no worries
about renewals.

Hi Keith,

I have an “Your Account” button at the top left just below the time in the
status bar. If I double tap on that a window/screen opens with a close button

I’m trying to find without success what I’ve been told is a Settings tab on

and been told within this Settings tab is such a control. I’ve looked
everywhere within the YouTube app, including using the item chooser, but

If anyone can help me with this, I’d very much appreciate it. I’m wondering if
this tab could be on the iPad app and not on the iPhone app, but I don’t have
an iPad to look into this.

Thanks in advance, Keith

they remain platform agnostic when it comes to this aspect of their business,

Hi List,

I just received an email with news I hadn’t heard before. Apparently Withings
merged with or was bought out by Nokia and this summer the transition from
Withings to Nokia will take place. Below is an article about this. At this
point the Withings Healthmate app is more or less accessible, but can
definitely do with improvements. I own a Withings “Body” smartscale as well as
the Withings “Thermo” body thermometer. The thermometer actually has its own
app, again it’s accessible but with a few challenges. I hope that maybe down
the road all Withings devices will be supported by a single app and I think now
is a good time for all of us who own Withings devices to contact the company
and make sure they don’t forget accessibility, it would be a shame if Nokia
released a new app which would make all these investmenet into previously
accessible devices worthless if the app becomes inaccessible. Hopefully it will
become much more accessible, but instead of waiting to see if this happens
please join me in requesting this. One statement in the article jumped out at
me “You can be sure that our priority remains the same: empowering you to live
a healthier life”. Let’s all remind Withings and Nokia that that “you” also
includes millions of people and users of such devices who have physical
disabilities and in some way especially that group should be a priority for a
company who makes health and medical devices.
The article was written by somebody called “Cédric Hutchings”, when I clicked
on his/her name I found out that he/she is “VP of Digital Health at Nokia &
co-founder Withings. Passionate about health, wellness, and beautiful, useful
things”. I will try to obtain a contact email for this person, if some of you
who are more active on Twitter can find out how to tweet this person please
post it here. Below now the article:

Last year Withings joined Nokia with a shared vision: to help you take care of
your health with beautiful devices that fit seamlessly into everyday life.
We are excited to announce that in early summer 2017, our award-winning range
of products will transition to the Nokia brand. Nokia is a global brand
synonymous with innovation, connectivity and great design—values that Withings
shares.
The name change is just the beginning. We aim to take our vision of connected
health even further with a number of exciting developments that will start
rolling out this summer. We can’t wait to share with you a complete redesign of
our Health Mate app featuring unique coaching programs, and the debut of our
Patient Care solution, which revolutionizes the relationship between caregivers
and patients.
You can be sure that our priority remains the same: empowering you to live a

X since Nokia is now in the business of making android phones, let us hope that
they remain platform agnostic when it comes to this aspect of their business,
i.e. the health stuff.

RE: Seeing Eye GPS version 3.0 with new features

2017-06-15 Thread Richard Turner
Well, as I said, the technology is here, just not widely available.
Do a google search for iBeacons, if you add BlindSquare to the search you can
find lots of stories about how they are being used.
Apparently, the London Underground subway system is installing them, the San
Francisco Airport, a mall I think in Toronto, Canada, and more.
You might also search for Seeing Eye and iBeacons, but that is so new, I’m not
sure what you will find.
Once you have more information about them, you might want to talk to your local
mall manager to see if they would look into installing them as an ADA provision.

HTH,
Richard

I’m not kidding but rather looking for any possible solution because I get

Later,
Richard

bit differently than others although the basic idea is the same.
I’ve been looking for GPS that announces the name of the store I’m entering.
This is very crucial when walkin in the mall or at a shopping plaza.
Are you aware of any GPS with such capability? g

Withings transitions to Nokia: all Withings device owners should contact them now to lobby for better accessibility

2017-06-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi List,

I just received an email with news I hadn't heard before. Apparently Withings
merged with or was bought out by Nokia and this summer the transition from
Withings to Nokia will take place. Below is an article about this. At this
point the Withings Healthmate app is more or less accessible, but can
definitely do with improvements. I own a Withings "Body" smartscale as well as
the Withings "Thermo" body thermometer. The thermometer actually has its own
app, again it's accessible but with a few challenges. I hope that maybe down
the road all Withings devices will be supported by a single app and I think now
is a good time for all of us who own Withings devices to contact the company
and make sure they don't forget accessibility, it would be a shame if Nokia
released a new app which would make all these investmenet into previously
accessible devices worthless if the app becomes inaccessible. Hopefully it will
become much more accessible, but instead of waiting to see if this happens
please join me in requesting this. One statement in the article jumped out at
me "You can be sure that our priority remains the same: empowering you to live
a healthier life". Let's all remind Withings and Nokia that that "you" also
includes millions of people and users of such devices who have physical
disabilities and in some way especially that group should be a priority for a
company who makes health and medical devices.
The article was written by somebody called "Cédric Hutchings", when I clicked
on his/her name I found out that he/she is "VP of Digital Health at Nokia &
co-founder Withings. Passionate about health, wellness, and beautiful, useful
things".

Nokia is a global brand
synonymous with innovation, connectivity and great design-values that Withings
shares.
The name change is just the beginning. We aim to take our vision of connected
health even further with a number of exciting developments that will start
rolling out this summer. We can't wait to share with you a complete redesign of
our Health Mate app featuring unique coaching programs, and the debut of our
Patient Care solution, which revolutionizes the relationship between caregivers
and patients.
You can be sure that our priority remains the same: empowering you to live a
healthier life. Existing Withings products will continue to be supported with

Doubts with the new iPad pro 10.5.

2017-06-15 Thread Mário Navarro

Hi

I'm thinking of buying the new iPad pro 10.5, but I'm in doubt with two
things.

1. Is voice over compatible with the new ProMotion technology of the
iPad screen?

2. Does this new screen support the new 3D force touch feature?
I did a google search about this feature in this new iPad, and what I
read is that this new screen does not support 3D force touch.

Will this change with the coming of IOS 11?
Please, what are your thoughts.
thanks.
cheers.

Re: Seeing Eye GPS version 3.0 with new features

2017-06-15 Thread Richard Turner

Is there a Settings tab in YouTube app?

2017-06-15 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

Running latest public iOS on an iPhone 7 with latest YouTube app.

I'm trying to find without success what I've been told is a Settings tab on
YouTube. I'm trying to change the playback speed to help in learning a song,
and been told within this Settings tab is such a control. I've looked
everywhere within the YouTube app, including using the item chooser, but
haven't been able to track this down.

If anyone can help me with this, I'd very much appreciate it. I'm wondering if
this tab could be on the iPad app and not on the iPhone app, but I don't have
an iPad to look into this.

Thanks in advance, Keith
