Re: Accessibility of icloud.com website on a PC

2012-05-25 Thread Gabriele Battaglia (Kriyaban)

Hi Grant, not at all.
With Safari on my mac the iCloud site is a little bit better but absolutely far to be considered accessible according to my personal
standard.

We should prepare a document, putting all our signatures and send it to che
Apple's accessibility team.
Gabriele.

Re: Accessibility of icloud.com website on a PC

2012-05-25 Thread Sieghard
Hi Daniel, Brend, Ed and others,

I am wondering if Ed maybe was thinking of the Apple.com website or of
the iTunes Store. I also have tried iCloud and actually had been put
through to an Apple accessibility representative after calling their
tech support. She explained to me how it should work and I was able to
do some stuff, but it is very difficult and definitely quite
inaccessible. I highly recommend that anybody who cares about it sends
an email to accessibil...@apple.com to let them know that visually
impaired people want to use the website as well especially the Find my
iPhone feature could be useful and important.I subscribe to
Microsoft's Office 365 service which gives me a hosted exchange
account for my business for $7 a month and it is super accessible and
I have the option there to wipe my phone, but it would be very good if
iCloud.com was more accessible.

Regards,
Sieghard

Using a portable scanner with an IOS device?

2012-05-25 Thread Sandy Tomkins
Hi to all,

Talking with a friend of mine, a fellow iphone and VO user, I am looking to
investigate the possible use of one of those very small and portable scanners
together with an OCR package, such as Prizmo etc for letter/bill reading.

Now, i knowb I have always sung the praises of Prizmo/Saytext etc, and I
still do, but I have to admit that for many of us, these camera based Apps are
not very usable. I think that two possible solutions are available to us right
now, which could make these apps more accessible to more of us. The first would
be to use a stand, such as that provided with the KNFB Reader. I have never
seen one of these and don't know if it would hold an iPhone and so would love
to know if anyone here has tried this with one of the OCR Apps and an iphone.

The second could be to use one of those very small, almost the size of a
thick ruler, where you feed the paper into it and then it rolls it through,
scanning line by line and creating some sort of JPeg or PDF file, which we
could then use, say, prizmo, to digitalise.
At the moment, my friend, has got frustrated is thinking of one of the
horrendously, expensive adaptive tech solutions, but I feel sure there is still
a mainstream answer for her. So, does anyone have something useful to say re a
stand or a portable scanner?

Thanks, Sandy.

RE: Using a portable scanner with an IOS device?

2012-05-25 Thread Aman Singer
Hi, Sandy.
There's a problem with being at the cutting edge, the loss of blood
tends to be severe. I have yet to try any of these out, but if someone has,
or if you would, I would be most grateful to hear of the results.

nters___Scanners|WorldLandingWidget|771237pcatId=L2_PrintScan|L1_Electronic
spage=featuredproduct
http://www.getdoxie.com/product/doxie-go/techspecs.html
The first is a scanner specifically for the iPad. I have no idea
whether it will work with the iPhone, power issues may stop it, or the fact
that the iPhone doesn't support the camera kit may. The next question is
whether it's accessible. Anyone's guess on that one.
The second unit will work on the iPhone, but it has defects.
Specifically, it has a fairly limited battery (100 scans, according to the
manufacturer), and it requires a WIFI SD card to work with an iPhone. Again,
whether it is accessible is anyone's guess.
As I said, if anyone has tried these, it would be good to hear of
it.

RE: VO accessibility of Oxford American dictionary?

2012-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
Is this the one you are talking about?
It is by a company called Handmark, Inc. I show a price of $29.99.
They also make a Pocket dictionary for $4.99. The Pocket has 150,000 words
and the new Oxford American Dictionary has 350,000 wordds.
My public library has the entire Oxford English Dictionary on-line through
their databases which works in Safari. However, the built-in dictionary in
the iPhone is actually quite good. I might be interested in one of these
though if they were fully accessible.

New Oxford American Dictionary
Description
As Oxford's flagship American dictionary, the New Oxford American Dictionary
sets
the standard of excellence for lexicography in this country. With more than
350,000
words, phrases, and senses, and hundreds of explanatory notes, this
dictionary provides
the most comprehensive and accurate coverage of American English available.
The dictionary draws on the two-billion-word Oxford English Corpus and the
unrivaled
citation files of the world-renowned Oxford English Dictionary to provide
the most
accurate and richly descriptive picture of American English ever offered in
any dictionary.
The Third Edition offers a thoroughly updated text, with revisions
throughout and
approximately 2,000 new words, phrases, and meanings. Many new words relate
to fast-moving
areas such as computing, technology, current affairs, and ecology, while
others have
recently entered the popular lexicon. Usage notes have been updated in light
of the
most recent Corpus evidence, and a completely new in-text feature on Word
Trends
charts usage for rapidly changing words and phrases such as carbon, mobile,
or tweet.
In addition, the application has an attractive, modern new design that makes
entries
easier to read and find.
One of the hallmarks of the New Oxford American Dictionary is the way it
reflects
the living language. Unlike in more traditional dictionaries, where meanings
are
ordered chronologically according to the history of the language, each entry
plainly
shows the principal meaning or meanings of the word, organized by importance
in today's
English. Thus readers can be confident that the first definition they see is
the
one most likely to be used by people today, and is not a sense that has been
obsolete
for two centuries.

Re: VO accessibility of Oxford American dictionary?

2012-05-25 Thread Kimber Gardner
That's the one. I misquoted the price.

I would definitely cough up thirty bucks if I knew I could use it.

On 5/25/12, Richard Turner richard.turne...@gmail.com wrote:
Is this the one you are talking about?
It is by a company called Handmark, Inc. I show a price of $29.99.
They also make a Pocket dictionary for $4.99. The Pocket has 150,000 words
and the new Oxford American Dictionary has 350,000 wordds.
My public library has the entire Oxford English Dictionary on-line through
their databases which works in Safari. However, the built-in dictionary in
the iPhone is actually quite good. I might be interested in one of these
though if they were fully accessible.

 New Oxford American Dictionary
 Description
As Oxford's flagship American dictionary, the New Oxford American
 Dictionary
 sets
the standard of excellence for lexicography in this country.
Usage notes have been updated in
 light
 of the
most recent Corpus evidence, and a completely new in-text feature on Word
 Trends
charts usage for rapidly changing words and phrases such as carbon, mobile,
 or tweet.
In addition, the application has an attractive, modern new design that
 makes
 entries
 easier to read and find.
One of the hallmarks of the New Oxford American Dictionary is the way it
 reflects
the living language. Unlike in more traditional dictionaries, where
 meanings
 are
ordered chronologically according to the history of the language, each
 entry
 plainly
shows the principal meaning or meanings of the word, organized by
 importance
 in today's
English. Thus readers can be confident that the first definition they see
 is
 the
one most likely to be used by people today, and is not a sense that has
 been
 obsolete
 for two centuries.
Offering clear, authoritative, and precise information, with the in-depth
 and up-to-date
coverage that users need and expect, the New Oxford American Dictionary is

Hello Lists,

I was wondering if there is an app out there that is accessible that will
search a restaurant's menu and list the nutritional values along with the
menu item? This would be great for those that need to calculate the Weight
Watcher's points, the sodium amounts intake, and sugar/carbs listed that
need to be considered before making a selection because of dietary
restrictions. Any suggestions would be great, as one of my clients was
asking about this for the iPhone last night.

Re: VO accessibility of Oxford American dictionary?

2012-05-25 Thread Kimber Gardner
That makes it sound like it's more inconvenient than it's worth.

On 5/25/12, Richard Turner richard.turne...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi,
I searched AppleVis for the app you mention, American English Dictionary,
and only found a review of the one Kimber is asking about, the Newe Oxford
 American Dictionary.
Here is the text from the accessibility section of the review for the New
 Oxford American Dictionary:
 Accessibility Comments
The app is fully accessible. However, the way information is presented on
 the screen
and the way VoiceOver interacts with such applications make it very
 difficult to
use. Each word appears on the screen as a link which can be clicked, so
 VoiceOver
reads each word and then says Link, then plays its normal VO sound which
 indicates
a text boundary, then reads the next word, and so forth.
 VoiceOver Performance
 VoiceOver reads all page elements.
 Button Labelling
 All buttons are clearly labelled.
 Usability
The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver, but the interface makes the app
 very
 difficult to use.
 Other Comments
An increasing number of developers and companies are moving toward
 presenting information
on the screen in the form of words which can be clicked to move the focus
 to
 a different
screen. Sadly, this affects almost all premium dictionaries on the App
 store including
this one. I think Apple should add a router option which, when selected,
 would disable
the announcement of HTML elements in continuous reading (I mean with the
 two-finger
down gesture). That would greatly help with such apps. One of the popular
 screen
readers on Windows has such an option, and it drastically enhances the
 accessibility
 of such applications there.

Yes, that is what also happened to dictionary.com though I haven't used that
one in a while.
I've been using the Webster's Dictionary app, which pauses slightly with
each word, but doesn't say link.

Have you used the built-in dictionary by doing the pass-through gesture on a
word, then either flicking to Define, or turning the rotor until it says
edit and then flicking up or down to define and double tapping?

It is a pretty impressive dictionary.

Re: VO accessibility of Oxford American dictionary?

2012-05-25 Thread Esther
Hi Kimber, Richard, and Others,

I think the dictionary that David (mrgushi) meant to recommend is the Advanced
English Dictionary Thesaurus by jDictionary Mobile. Its initials are AED,
but that doesn't stand for American English Dictionary. This is an app I
recommended on this list in Fall 2009, along with The World Factbook 2009
(now, The World Factbook 2012) from the same developers. Here's the URL
• The Advanced English Dictionary Thesaurus ($0.99) by jDictionary Mobile
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/advanced-english-dictionary/id293150206?mt=8
This will also work on the iPad, but there's also another HD version for the
iPad by the same people, but listed as being from JDMI Kft. instead of
jDictionary Mobile. The current listing for the iPhone version features up
to 250,000 entries, 1.6 million words, 335,000 relations. The HD version for
iPad features up to 591,700 entries, 4.9 million words, 335,000 relations,
and the URL is:
• The Advanced English Dictionary Thesaurus HD ($1.99) by JDMI Kft.
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/advanced-english-dictionary/id508965224?mt=8

If you want to read the post I wrote in response to another request for an
iPhone dictionary app, here's a link to the macvisionaries list Mail Archive
post of two months ago:
• Re: Looking for a good English Dictionary for the iPhone that does just a
little bit more
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg62101.html

I also use the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, which I mentioned on this list in
early 2011. Mike Busboom, in his original request for a dictionary app that
does just a little bit more was referring to this dictionary, and the ability
to look up words when he wasn't sure of the exact spelling, which is one of the
features of the Advanced English Dictionary Thesaurus discussed in the
comparison of dictionary apps in the linked post. I link to content that I
would like to read, such as detailed reviews of app features. But for those
just wanting an App Store URL, here's the link to the Merriam-Webster
Dictionary. I still have the dictionary.com iPad app, which doesn't have the
annoying links that appeared in the iPhone version, but that may only be
because I also stopped updating the iPad version I have.

• Merriam-Webster Dictionary (free, ad-supported) by Merriam-Webster, Inc.:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/merriam-webster-dictionary/id399452287?mt=8

HTH. Hopefully, now that the viphone list is archived at the Mail Archive
site. It will be easier to search for apps that were discussed and recommended
on this list using the much better and simpler search engine of the Mail
Archive site. Cheers,

Esther

 Oxford American Dictionary:
 Accessibility Comments
The app is fully accessible. However, the way information is presented on
 the screen
and the way VoiceOver interacts with such applications make it very
 difficult to
use. Each word appears on the screen as a link which can be clicked, so
 VoiceOver
reads each word and then says Link, then plays its normal VO sound which
 indicates
a text boundary, then reads the next word, and so forth.

Re: backing up jailbreak apps, settings, and the like

2012-05-25 Thread Kliphton
Yes there is, search for a app in cydia called XBackup It will save your
apps in it's cloud, and if you have your jb apps in a folder, it will put them
back in those folders when you restore them. And yes, it's completely vo
accessible. I think it cost 3 bucks, but don't quote me on that one.

I just read this on my BBC app (technology section). I am not quite sure if

RE: Voicebook VO

2012-05-25 Thread Jon Pierson
Hi,
Just in case anyone else wondered, this is for use with Facebook.
Here's some info:

Voice Book VO is a Facebook application designed specifically for those who
use the Apple iOS Voice Over accessibility features. Basic Facebook
functionality is finally available for the blind, low-vision, dyslexic, or
other print-disabled people.

Imagine being able to quickly and comfortably scan your news feed, post your
status, comment on and like items. You can now keep up with your family and
friends in the medium they are accustomed to without the frustration of a
partially accessible app or having to resort to a PCs screen reader that is
often confused by Facebook's site.

With community support, we plan on expanding the features of Voice Book. See
our support website (www.activeinfosys.com) for more details about future
enhancements.

Hello Patty and welcome aboard the Focus 40 Blue Braille Road (smile).

By the way, Freedom Scientific just announced both a smaller version of the
Focus 40 Blue and the debut of the Focus 14 Blue, a 14-cell display that
costs approximately $1,295.00.

But I digress:

The following is what I posted to the list a while ago, I believe it will
answer your question in short order.

Good luck and enjoy.

Mark

Original Post:

Hello Theresa,

Navigating PDF titles in iBooks is almost the same as navigating EPUB or
native iBooks titles but with one little difference.

The following is for navigating native iBooks titles using the Focus 40 Blue
Braille display which both you and I enjoy:

1.
Use the Wiz Wheels to pan through a page of text.

2.
When Page Chooser is in focus, at the end of the page, use a chord-6 to jump
forward one page or chord-3 to jump back one page at a time.

3.
Before doing anything else, after using your desired chord combo, carefully
scroll up one click on a Wiz Wheel. This will take you to the top of the
current page. Please note that this works only if you do not use any other
key-combos immediately following either a chord-6 or chord 3.

Now, the only difference between the above and navigating in a PDF title is
that there is usually one extra line that denotes the number of pages in the
title just above the Page Chooser line. Ignore this extra line; it is for
information only. However, after entering your desired chord combo,
carefully scroll up two clicks on a Wiz Wheel in order to be taken to the
top of the current page.

Review of BrailleTouch in Access World

2012-05-25 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hello List,

In the May issue of Access World there is an extensive review of the Braille
Touch app that had been the buzz on this list a while back. I believe all
braille users on this list should read and then think about submitting a
recommendation to the Apple Accessibility folks. From what I understood,
Apple has restricted this app from fully integrating with inputting text.
So, I am not sure how anyone of us would be able to use this as text input
and benefit from it. Please correct me if I interpreted this wrong. Happy
reading.

Re: Review of BrailleTouch in Access World

2012-05-25 Thread Grant Hardy
Eileen, yes, all apps run in a sandbox meaning they're pretty much
isolated from the rest of the phone except in cases where they use
very specific APIs. For example, apps are sometimes allowed, at a
user's request, to open files from other apps. Usually, this is
actually a good thing, because it means that you can pretty much try
whatever you want on iOS without worrying about system instability.
But I agree, in cases like this, it's in fact a detriment rather than
a benefit.

I imagine what you'd have to do is type the text into this app, then
copy it to the clipboard, and then paste it elsewhere. Or, the
developers might allow you to compose Email or text messages with the
text pre-filled. This is basically the extent of what the app would be
able to do and I don't think Apple will budge on this: it's just a
part of their operating system.

Cheers,

Grant

RE: Review of BrailleTouch in Access World

2012-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
The developers of this app seem to think that once sighted people figure out
that they can text without looking, it may just take off.
So, let's hope they are right and sighted people embrace using braille input
the way they've embraced audio books.
Not to the extent of using this while driving, though. ha ha.

THe only other option is to convence Apple that this could be another
keyboard option which then it would have to be integrated into the OS. There
would have to be a fair amount of interest before it would be considered
because it would likely not be a trivial change.

On May 25, 2012, at 5:49 PM, Grant Hardy wrote:

From what I understood, Apple has restricted this app from fully
 integrating with inputting text.
So, I am not sure how anyone of us would be able to use this as text
input and benefit from it. Please correct me if I interpreted this
 wrong. Happy reading.

It is a pretty impressive dictionary.

Hi,
I searched AppleVis for the app you mention, American English
Dictionary, and only found a review of the one Kimber is asking about,
the Newe Oxford American Dictionary.
Here is the text from the accessibility section of the review for the
New Oxford American Dictionary:
Accessibility Comments
The app is fully accessible. However, the way information is presented
on the screen and the way VoiceOver interacts with such applications
make it very difficult to use. Each word appears on the screen as a
link which can be clicked, so VoiceOver reads each word and then says
Link, then plays its normal VO sound which indicates a text
boundary, then reads the next word, and so forth.
VoiceOver Performance
VoiceOver reads all page elements.
Button Labelling
All buttons are clearly labelled.
Usability
The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver, but the interface makes
the app very difficult to use.
Other Comments
An increasing number of developers and companies are moving toward
presenting information on the screen in the form of words which can be
clicked to move the focus to a different screen. Sadly, this affects
almost all premium dictionaries on the App store including this one.
I think Apple should add a router option which, when selected, would
disable the announcement of HTML elements in continuous reading (I
mean with the two-finger down gesture). That would greatly help with
such apps. One of the popular screen readers on Windows has such an
option, and it drastically enhances the accessibility of such
applications there.

RE: VO accessibility of Oxford American dictionary?

2012-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
WordWeb had the same problem the last I tried it.
I guess I should revisit it.
I just wrote the makers of the New Oxford English Dictionary and gave them
detailed feedback on the problem with the word link showing up after every
word.
So, we shall see if anything happens there.

awesome too.

Have you used the built-in dictionary by doing the pass-through
gesture on a word, then either flicking to Define, or turning the
rotor until it says edit and then flicking up or down to define and
 double tapping?

It is a pretty impressive dictionary.

 Hi,
I searched AppleVis for the app you mention, American English
Dictionary, and only found a review of the one Kimber is asking
about, the Newe Oxford American Dictionary.
Here is the text from the accessibility section of the review for
 the New Oxford American Dictionary:
 Accessibility Comments
The app is fully accessible. However, the way information is
presented on the screen and the way VoiceOver interacts with such
applications make it very difficult to use. Each word appears on the
screen as a link which can be clicked, so VoiceOver reads each word
and then says Link, then plays its normal VO sound which indicates
a text boundary, then reads the next word, and so forth.
 VoiceOver Performance
 VoiceOver reads all page elements.
 Button Labelling
 All buttons are clearly labelled.
 Usability
The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver, but the interface makes
the app very difficult to use.
 Other Comments
An increasing number of developers and companies are moving toward
presenting information on the screen in the form of words which can
be clicked to move the focus to a different screen. Sadly, this
affects almost all premium dictionaries on the App store including
this one.

Understanding volume and VO

2012-05-25 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
Okay, trying to recover from resetting all of my phone's settings
last week. Ouch! Here's my question.
Is VoiceOver supposed to be able to talk at one level for one screen
like home, and at another level for something like when you're using
a headset. I've been trying to get the level up for Siri without
being blasted. I think I got things evened out by turning my main
level up to about 90 per cent and then turning VoiceOver down. But
now if I listen to something like Tune In Radio, it's too loud. If I
turn the radio station down, am I changing the master volume and
messing up everything else. Man, think I could use a major volume
tutorial right about now. grin.

Thanks.

OOTunes, AOL Radio, iHart Radio, etc. I'm having no luck. Using an
 iPhone 4./

Re: Understanding volume and VO

2012-05-25 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hello.

Yes. But this is not a voiceover thing. Its a system audio thing. There is a
headphone volume, and a built in speaker volume. And to add to that, Siri has
its own volume as well. So, to adjust the volume of Siri, you need to be using
it. Same with headphone and built in speaker volumes. All audio players, the
built in music app, pandora, etc, are all controlled by system volume. These
apps don't have independent volume control.

 Hi everyone!

 Ouch! Here's my question.
Is VoiceOver supposed to be able to talk at one level for one screen like
home, and at another level for something like when you're using a headset.
I've been trying to get the level up for Siri without being blasted. I think
I got things evened out by turning my main level up to about 90 per cent and
then turning VoiceOver down. But now if I listen to something like Tune In
Radio, it's too loud. If I turn the radio station down, am I changing the
master volume and messing up everything else. Man, think I could use a major
volume tutorial right about now. grin.
 Thanks.

Re: Understanding volume and VO

2012-05-25 Thread James Mannion
What you may want to do is to go into something like TuneIn radio or
even the music player and set the main volume slider to about 50 or
60% depending on your preference. Then set the voiceover volume in the
rotor to about 75 or 80%. Yes the main volume will relatively change
voiceover volume as well and you might move the main volume up or down
a little depending on what you are doing. Setting the voiceover volume
in the rotor to about 75 to 80% sets it high enough that you can move
the main volume up or down a little and still have voiceover volume,
but if you set the voiceover rotor volume much above that and
voiceover sounds even more distorted than it does anyway. This is
assuming using what they call the high quality voice (compact off) All
of this of course is just a suggestion and hopefully it can help.

Hi Ed

Do you use Jaws on the iCloud website? If so, how do you navigate around?

No I used the icloud.com site, it works fine and it can be used, I am tired
of people saying something isn't accessible when it can be used and works
fine.
