RE: Facetime on ipad mini
Andrew, You find Facetime in the Settings app. Swipe about 10 or 12 times past General, just before Facetime is Phone and Messages. As far as finding the Facetime app, you can use Spotlight Search. Do the following: 1. Touch any app on your home screen, then do a 3-finger swipe down to bring up Spotlight search 2. Type Facetime into the search field at the top of the screen. 3. Review the search results in the middle of the screen. If you find Facetime and it is followed by something like Utilities that means it is located in a folder called Utilities. If it says nothing it means it's on one of your home screens and not in a folder. Facetime is an iOS stock app so it can't be deleted and it's definitely going to be somewhere. Oh, one more thing, if you don't have a heading called Applications in your spotlight search results, you might not have that enabled. You would have to go to Settings, General, Spotlight search to check that. Spotlight search is the fourth item in General Settings after About, Software Update and SIRI. I run iOS 7..1.2 which is the latest, I believe. I will go through all my folders again. I asked siri to make a facetime call to a contact but siri said that it couldn't do so because I had restrictions on in FaceTime. I went through my settings but I can't find anything to do with facetime there either. I feel a bit of a dummy at the moment. Thanks for your replies, folks. Andrew On 15 Aug 2014, at 00:39, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca wrote: Andrew, Are you using iOS 7 on your iPad Mini or is it an original iPad Mini which is still running iOS 6? The Facetime app was only added in iOS 7. However, you don't really need a Facetime app to make a Facetime call. Please note also that Facetime Audio is another feature which was added in iOS 7, in iOS 6 one can only do regular Facetime calls which include video. If you are running iOS 7 then maybe your Facetime app was moved to another home screen or into a folder. Morning. Following on from Mark's question, I got a recording from some one through an I message and when I came to listen to it, I could not get out of it. I had to shut down I message through the app switcher. I know this isn't a memo related question but I did get a memo recording via I message so therefore this is related. Thank you. Re: NFL AudioPass Question
I saw the abbreviations in the app last night when listening to the game. If you think of the abbreviations being for cities, as well as getting the team's name when the game is currently happening, this might help. I have another Audio Pass question: is there a place in the app or on the site that lists the full schedules for each team? I am looking for a second team to list as a favorite and would like to look through the various schedules. The only way I have found to do this so far is by looking on the team's website under schedule. Re: NFL AudioPass Question
You can always use Siri to get a teams schedule. For example, just say, What is the New York Giants 2014 season schedule. Now it will list all preseason and regular season games. Siri usually does a good job at getting sports information. You can also use Siri to get all games being played this week, a teams current standings, and a list of teams by division, conference, or all teams, in the order they rank. Also, if you use the countdown timer, it now speaks timer progress every 5 seconds until the last 5, and then every 1. It's so nice to hear how much time is left. It's a fitness app that prompts you to do specific exercises throughout the day at the interval you set. The exercises are chosen at random. For instance, at 9:20, you might be asked to do 25 crunches, at 10:20, you might be asked to walk up and down 4 flights of stairs, etc. The app was always reasonably accessible, but there were a few issues. I pointed these out to the developer, and he has fixed them in an update that came out this morning. This is a great app for anyone who wants to get in a little better shape and doesn't want to do a long workout at any one time. You can buy additional exercises to get more variety, and you can remove exercises you don't like so that the app won't propose them. And if it suggests one you don't want to do, you can ask for a new one. And with these accessibility improvements, it's particularly good. Thanks so much to the developer, Kevin Holesh, for making such a good and accessible app! Cheers, Anna -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. You might want to consider using the mobile Facebook site which is much easier to navigate. It is m.facebook.com. RE: email opens in message, instead of inbox, using iPad air
I don't have an iPad, but if you hold it in portrait mode and are in a message, won't a scrub gesture take you back to your mailboxes? I guess you would first have to let us know if you are using the iPad in landscape or portrait mode. If you use it in landscape mode then as Richard said, you will see both the messages and mailbox list but even here a scrub gesture should take you from an open message back to the list of messages. Hello Lelia, Some of the exercises have countdown timers, but others don't. The one you did doesn't because it told you to do a specific number of lunges. Re: Captcha Solutions for iOS?
Hi Teresa, This is a far stretch, but how about taking a screen shot, so it's in the camera roll. Then you could try to use maybe TapTapSee, goggles, or one of the OCRapps on the phone to import it and see if it will crack the capture. I used to use VizWiz when I had a capture that didn't have an audio link to it, but the app has worthless because I think they have run out of funds to keep it up. HTH. Amazon Debuts Payment Processing App and Card Reader
BlankI'll be interested to see if this is more accessible than the Square reader. (article below) Steve Lansing, Mi Amazon debuts mobile payment app and card reader By Mae Anderson Associated Press Amazon is taking direct aim at mobile payment systems such as Square by introducing the Amazon Local Register, a credit-card processing device and mobile app designed to help small business owners accept payments through their smartphones and tablets. The move places the largest U.S. e-commerce retailer in competition with Square and other established mobile payment processing systems such as PayPal Here and Intuit's GoPayment. Amazon's technology includes a card reader that attaches to a smartphone, Kindle or tablet. The reader processes credit or debit card payments via a secure Amazon network, the same one that processes Amazon.com purchases. The service is designed to serve on-the-go small business owners who might otherwise only accept cash or checks, including massage therapists, food truck operators and artists who sell their work at outdoor fairs. Small businesses can start using Local Register by creating an account on http://localregister.amazon.com . Businesses must buy Amazon's card reader for $10, and download the free mobile app from the Amazon app store, the Apple app store or Google Play. The app works on most smartphones and tablets, including the Kindle Fire. Similar to Amazon's strategy in many of its businesses, the company aims to compete on price in the mobile payment arena. For customers who sign up for the service by Oct. 31, Amazon will take as its fee 1.75 percent of each payment processed, or each swipe of the card, a special rate that will last until Jan. 1, 2016. For people who sign up after Oct. 31, Amazon will take a service fee of 2.5 percent of each payment processed. The first $10 in transaction fees will be credited back to the customer, essentially paying for the card reader. That's below most of its competitors' rates. Square takes a fee of 2.75 percent of each transaction. PayPal Here takes 2.7 percent of each transaction and Intuit's GoPayment rates start at 1.75 percent per transaction if businesses pay a $19.95 monthly rate or 2.4 percent of each transaction without a monthly payment. I've actually heard some business owners say the only thing that would make them change (point of sale) systems is cost savings, said Matt Swann, vice president of local commerce for Amazon. Payments are hard and that's one of the things that gets in the way of serving customers, especially for small businesses, Swann said. Payment tools need to be inexpensive, simple and trusted to get the job done. Local Register is part of a slew of new products and services that Seattle-based Amazon has introduced this year. The company's Fire smartphone debuted this month. In April, it began selling the Fire TV, a media streaming device. Meanwhile, Amazon is expanding its same-day delivery service and offering grocery delivery and video and music streaming for its Prime loyalty club members. Investors have largely given Amazon a pass on profit as it focuses on spending the money it makes to grow and expand into new areas. But there are some signs patience may be waning. The company's most recent quarterly report in July showed a deeper-than-expected second quarter loss despite surging revenue. Since then, the company's stock has fallen about 11 percent. Amazon has been expanding into the payment space with other products: Amazon payments, which lets users with stored credit card or banking information on the Amazon site use their Amazon login to pay at sites other than Amazon. And Amazon Wallet, a beta app that lets users store gift cards, loyalty and rewards cards and membership cards and redeem them in store or online. -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Re: Using NLS cartridges with mac
Vicky, The reason you are having problems with the books is that when a mac transfers things to a USB drive, etc, it leaves mac dust. This clogs up things for nonmac devices. There used to be an app called blue harvest which would remove this mac dust from external media. Only other solution I know of is to put the cartridge into a pc and manually remove the ghost files.. hth, Caitlyn On Aug 15, 2014, at 1:42 PM, Vicki Ratcliffe vicki.ratcli...@gmail.com wrote: I know that this does not relate to the iPhone so maybe someone can write me off list. Re: Fantasy Yahoo question
Hey, Yes, live drafting on the Yahoo app is fully accessible. I have been working with the Yahoo developers on it for over a year. I drafted all my baseball teams in April with zero issues. The one thing that doesn't seem to be accessible is pre ranking your players as it is not yet offered in the app even to the sighted, and you cannot due it on the website with VoiceOver. I would highly suggest trying a mock draft to get familiar with the layout so when you do your live draft you aren't caught off guard. The mock draft is identical to what the live draft will be so you will want to just around the screens to check it out. It's fantastic, and a great job by Yahoo getting the app to work with VoiceOver. Let me know if you have any other questions. Re: Using NLS cartridges with mac
Actually this is kind of strange. Is it the NLS player you are using or some other? I've transferred talking books from my mac to both the NLS player and first generation stream without any extra error files. As for Mac dust these are the trash files and spotlight files that the Mac OS system puts in. They really shouldn't be causing a problem or at least they never have for me. The amount of space they take up on your cartridge, if that is what they are, should be negligible. If I wanted to remove these, I did it from the command line in terminal but not everybody is comfortable with doing that. But I am wondering why this is happening for you. I've often put several NLS books on a cartridge from my Mac and never had any problem that I can remember. I haven't done this in a while so maybe something has happened in the OS system's recent versions to cause this. When I have time I'll try to replicate your problem and see if I can find you a solution. I don't use my NLS player much now but when I did I didn't see this problem so something must have changed. Cheryl I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf. I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash! Then God gave me a new heart and life: His joy for my despairing tears! And now, every day: This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. RE: Quickoffice - edit Office documents, spreadsheets, and presentations
It is accessible. I have an observation about that. While it is accessible, it would not be my first choice for editing word documents. When you open a document and double tap to get it editing, you can't just slide your finger around to find text. You have to navigate pretty much by using the rotor set to words. Lines work when reading, but I wasn't as successful moving by lines when editing. I have not tried this with a Bluetooth keyboard or braille display as yet. This was on the iPhone 5S. Re: Using NLS cartridges with mac
Hi, I wonder if your player is running really old firmware. The very first versions of the player firmware didn't work well with the Mac. With later versions, however, the few extra files a Mac puts on your cartridge will be ignored, and Cheryl is right - they don't take a lot of space. To find out what firmware your player is running, remove the cartridge and press the Sleep button 10 times. It should be 2.1.7 or later. If it isn't, log into BARD and follow the Latest DTBM firmware and installation instructions link to update it. Hi I received an email today with a link to a pdf. I copied that link, opened VoiceDream, clicked Add, clicked on WebBrowser, pasted the link, and tried several things over time, including clicking Done, Clicking Go, Clicking Save, but I can't seem to get the pdf to download into VDR. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong, but can't figure out what. Any help will be appreciated. Keith -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. Dear Sieghard, Thank you so much for these careful instructions. I'm going mad here because I still cannot find Facetime on my iPad mini that runs the latest iOS. Searching for facetime in the spotlight did not reveal any results beyond the e-mails which we have exchanged regarding facetime. Re: inserting symn card in ipad miny
Hi Maria, this is one of those things where it might pay to have sighted assistance the first time you do it, but once you know how, it's easily done. I pop sims in and out of my devices all the time when I travel, so i don't get hit by extortionate roaming charges. It's really easy to do with the right tool. There's a sim tray on the side of the device. You pop the Apple Sim removal tool into a tiny round hole, press, and the tray pops out. I'd do it on a flat surface because the nanosims can be easily lost. I understand that with some iPhones in some markets, Apple does not bundle the sim removal tool with the iPhone. It's standard in New Zealand and I suspect it will be standard in Australia. I don't recall if a sim removal tool came with my Mini or not. They're really small and can easily be missed in the box. If you can't find the sim removal tool, a paperclip usually does it. Best of luck. Re: email opens in message, instead of inbox, using iPad air
I'm not experiencing that with my iPad Air. When I open the email app, the app opens with a list of email messages on the left half of the screen and the first 5 lines of text for each message on the right. Double tapping on the message on the left expands the list of messages on the right starting with the oldest message at the bottom of the list but I may have that reversed as I'm writing this on a netbook XP machine. Re: email opens in message, instead of inbox, using iPad air
Before I exit the mail app, I hit the back button so that the list of accounts is showing. For example, EarthLink, iCloud, VIPP. Voice over will then read the folder choices with the usual 2 finger flick down and announcing the number of messages in each account and all I need to do is to double tap the one I want such as EarthLink for example. Then EarthLink opens with it's list of folders such as inbox and then announces how many messages are there assuming I didn't finish reading them all. Under in box is the other folders out box sent mail etc. HTH Regards, Alan Go Chicago Bears in 2014! Teenagers; Tired of being harassed by your stupid parents? Act now! Move out. Get a job. Re: Aria Scale
All, Have been using the FitBit Aria now for just over a year, brilliant device, easy to setup using Voice Over and the FitBit iOS app, and as others have said, not only accurate, but, through the app you maintain a record of your weight, BMI and other key stats, which is useful and interesting. This also goes towards the app being more accurate when counting your steps etc, plus, calories burned when walking and exercising, after all, a lighter person may use less or more energy to excercise etc. The scales can be linked to up to 8 FitBit accounts making this a great unit for the family, I also like the fact that I, for the first time in my life, am able to weigh myself in absolute privacy. RE: Aria Scale
Hi Neil, I set up my scale a couple of days ago. It was absolutely accurate regarding my weight. The glitch was with the calculation of my BMI. I weighed myself twice. There was less than a half pound difference in the two weights. However, there was an 8% difference regarding my BMI. I called Fit Bit regarding the discrepancy. I happened to get someone that could have been new or just doesn't understand body weight and BMI. She said the reason for the 8% increase in my BMI was due to the 6/10's of a pound increase in one of the weights. Do you have any idea whether metal implants could affect the BMI calculation? I have quite a bit of metal. I have a totally artificial ankle, two hip implants and a spinal cord stimulator with a battery. I did contact the company for my spinal cord stimulator. They said some people have noticed a small surge in stimulation. I did turn the device off while weighing myself. Fit Bit is going to send a new scale. I appreciate that very much. Just trying to figure out if this is going to be an ongoing problem due to the metal. RE: wonderful accessibility update to move fitness app
When I double tap on Alert, I get the Buy Everything package tab. This has happened about 10 times. I've tried closing and reopening the app, and still the same. I've sent a note to Kevin. I bought all 4 exercise packs. When I tried to deselect from among the many exercises, I could only deselect about a quarter of them before double tapping no longer changed anything. Also, another note to Kevin. I like the app's potential, though. Thanks. Re: Aria Scale
You are getting BMI confused with body fat percentage. Body fat percentage is calculated using the electrical charge sent through your body and measuring resistance. This is the number you want to pay attention to. BMI, on the other hand, is an almost completely useless number. It was created because health workers can look at a chart and see where you are on the chart compared with the average. BMI does not take into account bone density, body fat compared with muscle, and so forth. Muscle weighs more than fat, so just being focused on weight can be unhealthy. And yes, any change in the weight, even by a few numbers to the right of the decimal point, will change the BMI number. Finally, Always weigh yourself under the same conditions. But after a number of times it does this, there are all those announcements I hear when I unlock my phone. All I have to do is to open the app and then close it again, and this clears all announcements, until I get one again. I know it doesn't really answer your question. RE: inserting symn card in ipad miny
As someone else on this list has posted, push pins work well for inserting into the hole to pop out the SIM card tray. Although I've never used a push pin, I found a paper clip not so helpful the one time I tried to remove the SIM card on my iPhone 5. Re: SIRI whisdom
Some of the responses from Siri just cracked me up. I have fun trying to get unusual responses. I have had one with my alarm as well where she says don't wake me up. RE: Facetime on ipad mini
Hi Andrew, As I said, make sure you have apps enabled in Settings, General, spotlight Search. I guess you could always try and search for another app like Notes or App Store and if they show up in Spotlight Search then obviously apps are included in your search. Alternatively, if you know handwriting you could turn the rotor to handwriting (this has to also be enabled first in Voiceover Settings, Rotor) and then write an F onto your screen with your finger. When I do this, Facetime is the first app which shows up, if I do a 2-finger swipe down to check other apps I have installed and which start with F, I get Facebook, Fleksy, and Flight View. I'm going mad here because I still cannot find Facetime on my iPad mini that runs the latest iOS. Searching for facetime in the spotlight did not reveal any results beyond the e-mails which we have exchanged regarding facetime. I've been through all my home screens and folders with a fine toothcomb and still haven't found it. I can't have deleted it, canI? It's not a matter of life and death so please ignore me. Many thanks for trying. i've certainly learnt a few things from these difficulties, and that in itself is a great help. RE: inserting symn card in ipad miny
The Sim removal tool is included here in Canada as well. I usurped a small plastic box which at one point contained these really thin breath freshener strips and I always have it in my passport wallet with my SIM removal tool when I travel. If I go to a country where I buy a local SIM I put my Canadian Nano SIM into this container together with the tool. Then when I'm an hour or so from landing again in Canada I put the airline blanket over my lap in case I drop the Sim and I change it. As Jonathan said, it's easily done once you practiced a couple of times. SIM cards have one corner which is cut off a bit and that corner goes towards the top of the iPhone and towards the outside.
