RE: A Definitely Good Audio Book Alternative
Apparently this app can access books you already have synced to your phone and which now reside in iBooks and also Podcasts although I find there is not too much wrong with the native Podcast app. I used to use Downcast, but after I had to do a complete restore and set up my phone as a new phone when I downgraded from the iOS 9 Beta, I decided to try and try some of apple's native apps where before I used third-party apps. There are still a few features I like in Downcast, but on the other hand I really like how I can use SIRI with the native Podcast app especially when it comes to the command to skip or rewind. With the apple Podcast app I can say Skip 68 seconds and it will do exactly that so there is no need to find the correct button for a 15 second, 30 second or 2 minute time jump and I don't even have to unlock my phone to skip or rewind. Very handy when trying to skip past ads/sponsor announcements I heard a hundred times before. I do agree, however, that I can just as easily transfer a book to Voicedream Reader using iTunes file transfer than I can sync it to iBooks and Voicedream Reader is awesome for listening to MP3 audio books, the way you access skipping, rewinding, chapters and going to a particular point in the book is done super well. Report on transferring my library from a Windows 7 to Windows 10 computer
Thanks to Mark and others on the list and a bit of help from Apple, Here are my steps and how it worked. I needed to move my library from a windows 7 computer to a Windows 10 computer. Many people suggested that I install iTunes on the Windows 10 computer and then overwrite the iTunes folder that was created with the iTunes folder from the library I was moving from my windows 7 computer. The suggestion from the person at Apple was a bit different. He suggested that I install iTunes and instead of overwriting the new iTunes folder, I should simply add the iTunes folder from my previous computer to the library in my iTunes version on Windows 10. This way, windows would decide where things went and that might be safer than simply overwriting the folder. This is what I did. I have to say that it went off totally without a hitch. My new computer now has my previous library and works amazingly well. I also installed the 64 bit version of iTunes on my 64 bit computer. I could have loaded the 32 bit version, but the 64 bit version uses more of the computer's ram memory and s very snappy. The end result. I am a happy camper. And, by the way. iTunes seems to work very nicely in Windows 10 so far. So, thanks for all the help from people on this list. It is nice to have moral support and good advice. Re: An interesting delimma with my phone
I have a 16G 4S, and I find it runs just fine. I did get an iPhone 5 from my employer recently, and I will say, that it is snappier than my 4S. It's gotten me thinking about what I may be missing with the newer iPhones and wondering if I should get a new phone now or wait and see how IOS 9 behaves on my 4S. On 07/25/2015 11:48 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote: Sounds like maybe a lack of space especially if you can' upgrade. Have you force quit all apps in the app switcher and rebooted? As for the 4S, even iOS 9 will be supported and I doubt your issues are related to compatibility problems. To me it sounds like iOS 9 in the end may even run better on a 4S than 8.x is since Apple is doing a lot to streamline iOS and many apps will have versions which are optimized for specific phones although you won't have to select this manually, it will automatically happen. The 4S is almost 4 years old so I don't say upgrading would be a bad thing and in fact I think you would enjoy the speed, improved battery life and features of a new phone, but as long as your 4S has no major hardware issues it should still work fine. edit: 3 fingers, not 4. 26. juli 2015 kl. 19:01 skrev Richard Turner richardturne...@outlook.com: If you have the room, allowing iTunes to copy the files to the iTunes library is a way to guarantee that you won’t have trouble finding the files later if you happen to move a folder, delete a file, or not have the USB drive plugged in the same place so it gets a different drive name. Richard From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Neal Ewers Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2015 9:19 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: Report on transferring my library from a Windows 7 to Windows 10 computer Sieghard. Sorry for not being clear. Steps. Update iTunes in Windows 7 to the latest update. I happened to be using iTunes 32 on that computer not that it makes any difference in the library in the end. Make sure all purchases had been transferred to my iPhone and that everything was backed up. Copied the iTunes folder on my Windows 7 computer to an external USB drive. Installed iTunes 64 bit on my Windows 10 computer. Rebooted after the install just to make sure. Opened iTunes and added the iTunes folder on my USB drive to the iTunes library on the windows 10 computer with the add folder to library option. When this process was finished, I connected my iPhone and was asked if I wanted to trust this computer. I said yes both on my computer and on my iPhone. I was then asked if I wanted to authorize this computer to connect to my iPhone. I said yes, filled in the email and password, and I was told how many devices I now had connected to this iTunes. I then went to llook for my apps on the iPhone to make sure what was there. I was then presented with a list of apps I could either install or remove. I didn’t understand this at first because all my apps were already installed. I eventually realized that those that said install, were already on the iPhone and those that said remove were ones I had deleted but still showed up in the list. Given this discovery, I left things the way they were and pressed sync. I have to say that I did this with a bit of trepidation, because I hoped I had understood this correctly and that it was not going to remove apps from my phone. When the sync was finished, everything on my computer matched what was on my iPhone. I then went into preferences and set those the way I wanted them and not to the defaults which the new iTunes had loaded. I then backed up my computer both to the cloud and to my Windows 10 computer. Now, there is one caveat here. I don’t have a lot of music. This was basically to get my apps to the new library in Windows 10. I don’t know what happens to music that one may have stored on ones computer in various places that are connected to iTunes as simply pointers to the music in various folders on the old computer. There must be a way to do this by the way you allow iTunes to handle your music, but I am in no way an expert on this, so I am not sure what to say here. This much I can tell you. When I added the old library to the library on the windows 10 computer, I noticed that all my music titles said they could not be located. But once I synced with my iPhone, they appeared. So, please understand that I am not the person to talk with about one transfers a large iTunes music library to the new computer. It may work the way I did it. My fall back plan had this worked was to simply overwrite the iTunes folder on the Windows 10 computer with the one from my USB drive, but I didn’t have to do that. I’m guessing that if one keeps their music on their computer in one place that iTunes knows about, one might just move that folder to the new computer with the same name and folder structure that existed on the old computer. I’m not really sure. I hope this helps. If not, I don’t mind answering more questions. Neal -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. I could have loaded the 32 bit version, but the 64 bit version uses more of the computer’s ram memory and s very snappy. The end result. I am a happy camper. And, by the way. iTunes seems to work very nicely in Windows 10 so far. So, thanks for all the help from people on this list. It is nice to have moral support and good advice. And now I have a major problem. The most significant problem I have found thus far is that I am no longer able to move between pages by swiping up and down on the iPod screen. Nor can I do so using the Amazon Basics blue tooth keyboard. When updating an app, I noted that I was not able to double tap the update button. I ultimately got around this by rebooting. However, my inability to switch between my four pages of apps is unchanged. What is interesting is that when on page one, if I double tapped the page number rather than swiped, it would ascend to the next page. However, when I got to the last page which is page four on this iPod, it stuck at page 4. I could however get back to page one by using Siri to open an app such as messages on page 1. Also, rebooting took me back to page 1. I am truly at a loss as to what to do now because this problem renders the device virtually useless. Ideas please! Thanks. RE: Transferring An MP3 Folder To IPhone6Plus From PC?
If you want to treat it like a book of speeches, if you have the Voice Dream Reader app, and the files are named so they would be in the order you want them in, you could zip them into a file with a name like Speeches. Then, either put the zip file on Dropbox or Email it to yourself if it isn’t too large, then open that zip file with Voice Dream Reader. It will treat it like a book, the book name would be speeches, and each chapter would be each file name. Personally, that is my preferred method for collections like this. Other folks will have other suggestions. SIRI definitely requires improvements
Hi everybody, This goes back to the thread about SIRI and the question Neil asked about the latitude of Maddison, Wisconsin. I just tried this and asked SIRI What is the latitude of Maddison, Wisconsin. Just as Neil reported, SIRI came back I don't understand what is the latitude of Wisconsin. I then asked What latitude is Vancouver, British Columbia. Notice the slight difference in wording What is the latitude of. and What latitude is.. Anyhow, SIRI came back with the answer promptly and when I asked in the same way What latitude is Maddison, Wisconsin SIRI also answered right away. Then I asked using the original wording which didn't work What is the latitude of Vancouver, British Columbia. SIRI answered The only possibility I found is Latitude Restaurant, is that the one you are looking for? Then SIRI beeped waiting for me to say Yes or No: as if I had asked it to look for restaurants with that name. I use SIRI a lot and often like how well it works especially for dictation. However, sometimes it's ridiculous how it gets simple things wrong or can't deliver an answer which Google Voice Search has no problems with. I also still find more complex dictation is difficult and I can't believe there still is no way to just spell out a word I know SIRI will get wrong. I really hope Apple puts some major effort into making SIRI better. They introduced this idea of a personal assistant, but considering SIRI has been around for almost 4 years it has gone through amazingly few real upgrades and it can't even tell you the battery status on your phone and I still can't easily set a 2-part reminder like this: Set a reminder on August 6 at 10 AM SIRI will say Tell me what you want to be reminded about, I say: Dentist appointment at 11 AM. This used to be possible and to me it sounds natural, but if I say it this way SIRI sets a reminder Dentist appointment for August 6 at 11 AM, it completely ignores that I said Dentist appointment at 10 AM and just interprets it the way it wants. If, however, I say this: Set a reminder on August 6 at 10 AM about my dentist appointment at 11 AM it creates it correctly, the reminder time is set to August 6 at 10 AM and the reminder text says My dentist appointment at 11 AM. Apple made such a big deal of how you can talk naturally to SIRI, but while you can set an alarm by saying many different things, a lot of other commands have to be delivered just so or SIRI will get it wrong. RE: Audio books on voice dream reader
Hi, You can only add audio books directly if they are on Dropbox or one of the other cloud services in the Voice Dream list, or if you have a direct web link to the zip file. Voice Dream cannot play BARD NLS books, and can only play DAISY audio books if they are in an open format, not DRM. Or, of course, in mp3 format, etc. I hope that answered your question. Thanks. File Sharing
In the latest version of iTunes, is anyone having any success in using file sharing? It is completely useless for me with either Window-Eyes 9.1 or the latest NVDA. It seems impossible to figure out which app is selected until you tab into the list of files and it is never the one that last spoke with a screen reader. I've written Apple Accessibility about this but who knows when Apple might address it. Richard -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. I am obviously over stating this. She is obviously better than that and Sieghard is right that she will set alarms and do other useful things. But if I had to think of the only way to ask my wife what she wanted for dinner tonight, she may starve in the process. Somehow, Google is more of a personal assistant in this way in that it seems to understand more ways of asking a particular question than Siri. Smiles I do hope that Siri becomes easier to use and that we can express things in more ways, rather than having to learn so many of the ways to ask Siri to do something. RE: Report on transferring my library from a Windows 7 to Windows 10 computer
Sieghard. Voiceover accessible flashcard app
Hello list, My Flashcards++ subscription is coming up soon. Before I go and sign up for another year ($9.95) I was curious to know if there are other Voiceover accessible flashcard apps out there that folks are using? I’ve tried a few others like Quizlet and Flashcards+, but wasn’t’ really convinced. I’ve got no real problem doing another year of Flashcards++, but just wanted to know if there’s an alternative out there that is feature rich and accessible. I know some apps tout their ability to import flashcard sets with photos, which obviously is irrelevant to me, so before I go forking over money for a feature I’m not going to use anyway, I thought I’d ask around first. Question about file sharing in iTunes 12.2.1
Hi, In an earlier version of iTunes, if you went to your phone, there were two columns of apps. One that showed what apps were on the phone, and the other consisting of apps which you could use to transfer data or music, etc. from your phone to your computer. In Windows, I can no longer find this second column. So, how does one, for example, transfer a file one has recorded on an app like BossJock or AudioMemos from the phone to a windows computer running iTunes 12.2. Thanks for any help. RE: SIRI definitely requires improvements
Yes, I think Siri has been dumbed down to look for pizza places, coffee shops, and a few other things that make money for businesses. I use her for what she is good at, but Google and Cortana are rapidly taking her place. Roberts To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Saturday, July 25, 2015 8:18 PM Subject: IOS 8.4 on 5th gen ipod touch I just got around to updating my fifth generation ipod touch to IOS 8.4. Thanks. Re: SIRI HAS JUST IMPRESSED ME ...
This one time I asked Siri to send a message to my wife. She came back with which wife? Apparently I had 2 contacts under her name one for work and one personal but imagine my surprise when she said which wife? I thought I was starting a harum or something! LOL! However, today I needed to remove a recurring event from my calendar (Fantastical) and didn't quite see how to do it! IN the end, I asked Siri in the best way I knew how (can't remember exactly the wording I used) and, Siri did it! I then said, Thanks, Siri. You did well, and I got a human-type response to that also! Smiles I do hope that Siri becomes easier to use and that we can express things in more ways, rather than having to learn so many of the ways to ask Siri to do something. I use her for what she is good at, but Google and Cortana are rapidly taking her place. Neal From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2015 10:45 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: SIRI definitely requires improvements Hi everybody, This goes back to the thread about SIRI and the question Neil asked about the latitude of Maddison, Wisconsin. I just tried this and asked SIRI “What is the latitude of Maddison, Wisconsin”. Just as Neil reported, SIRI came back “I don’t understand what is the latitude of Wisconsin”. I then asked “What latitude is Vancouver, British Columbia”. Notice the slight difference in wording “What is the latitude of…” and “What latitude is…”. Anyhow, SIRI came back with the answer promptly and when I asked in the same way “What latitude is Maddison, Wisconsin” SIRI also answered right away. Then I asked using the original wording which didn’t work “What is the latitude of Vancouver, British Columbia”. SIRI answered “The only possibility I found is Latitude Restaurant, is that the one you are looking for?” Then SIRI beeped waiting for me to say “Yes” or “No:” as if I had asked it to look for restaurants with that name. I use SIRI a lot and often like how well it works especially for dictation. However, sometimes it’s ridiculous how it gets simple things wrong or can’t deliver an answer which Google Voice Search has no problems with. I also still find more complex dictation is difficult and I can’t believe there still is no way to just spell out a word I know SIRI will get wrong. I really hope Apple puts some major effort into making SIRI better. They introduced this idea of a personal assistant, but considering SIRI has been around for almost 4 years it has gone through amazingly few real upgrades and it can’t even tell you the battery status on your phone and I still can’t easily set a 2-part reminder like this: Set a reminder on August 6 at 10 AM SIRI will say “Tell me what you want to be reminded about”, I say: Dentist appointment at 11 AM. This used to be possible and to me it sounds natural, but if I say it this way SIRI sets a reminder “Dentist appointment” for August 6 at 11 AM, it completely ignores that I said “Dentist appointment at 10 AM” and just interprets it the way it wants. If, however, I say this: “Set a reminder on August 6 at 10 AM about my dentist appointment at 11 AM” it creates it correctly, the reminder time is set to August 6 at 10 AM and the reminder text says “My dentist appointment at 11 AM”. Apple made such a big deal of how you can talk naturally to SIRI, but while you can set an alarm by saying many different things, a lot of other commands have to be delivered just so or SIRI will get it wrong. Steve Jobbs old adage “It just works” definitely does not apply here. Regards, Sieghard -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. In Windows, I can no longer find this second column. Hi all, someone mentioned this game so I thought I would download it and try it. First does anyone know if it works on iOS 8.4. Second is there a tutorial for it because it seems you can't play it with voiceover on. I used to love this game, and I hope it can still be played. Thank you all for any and all help. RE: strange issues with iOS 8.4 on the iPhone
First, have you rebooted the phone by holding down the power and home buttons together for about 10 seconds? With a 16 GB phone, you are going to have about 12 or at most 13 GB of actual storage. Does iTunes and your phone say the same thing for how much free space you have? If not, next, make sure everything is closed out of the app switcher, do an encrypted backup with iTunes. Then, restore your phone from iTunes. This will erase the phone, reinstall the firmware and offer to restore it from the last backup, which if you did an encrypted backup will restore all your passwords, etc. If you have a lot of music, this can take a long time. Or, call Apple Accessibility and see if they have other ideas. Re: strange issues with iOS 8.4 on the iPhone
If you have already shut down the phone and restarted it, then the next step would be to do a soft reset by holding down the power button and the home button for about 10 seconds. It will automatically shut down and restart the phone. If this does not help, then you might want to consider doing an encrypted backup of your phone and then restoring it. Remember, an encrypted backup also backs up your passwords. RE: Report on transferring my library from a Windows 7 to Windows 10 computer
Neal, I'm a little concerned that you'll need to leave that USB flash drive attached to your computer or the next time iTunes tries to access something you copied from it, it won't be able to find the item. Maybe they've made it harder to shoot yourself in the foot when adding stuff from portable drives but I know with past versions of iTunes, I got into trouble by adding stuff to the library from a flash drive that didn't stay attached to my computer. I think Richard might have alluded to this in one of his posts to this thread when he mentioned something about having iTunes copy the files to your main hard drive's folders. I know when I set up my new computer in the next few weeks, I plan to duplicate my iTunes Media folder structure on my new computer and then let iTunes add everything from the main hard drive instead of from a flash drive. I'm curious if you remove your source flash drive and then go into the list of apps on iTunes, what happens. I think you said you mainly were copying apps from the flash drive. I didn't understand this at first because all my apps were already installed. I don't have a lot of music. This was basically to get my apps to the new library in Windows 10. I don't know what happens to music that one may have stored on ones computer in various places that are connected to iTunes as simply pointers to the music in various folders on the old computer. My fall back plan had this worked was to simply overwrite the iTunes folder on the Windows 10 computer with the one from my USB drive, but I didn't have to do that. I'm guessing that if one keeps their music on their computer in one place that iTunes knows about, one might just move that folder to the new computer with the same name and folder structure that existed on the old computer. I'm not really sure. I hope this helps. If not, I don't mind answering more questions. Neal -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. strange issues with iOS 8.4 on the iPhone
hello everyone, I updated to iOS 8.4 about 2 months ago. everything was working fine until the last 2 weeks. Now, I am starting to see some strange behavior. Firstly, the phone seems laggy when starting applications (voiceover stops speaking for up to a minute), some apps (like Facebook) have their primary screen disappear (giving me bonks while trying to interact with it), the Onscreen keyboard doesn't appear in either messenger or Facebook (thus not allowing me to use the dictate function), some of the apps in the app chooser won't return to foreground when selected and double tapped, storage on the device seems to be incorrect (reports 7gb used with 5 gb remaining and this is on a 16gb phone!). I haven't tried a reset on the phone yet (I am loathe to try this as I would have to put back in a lot of data such as passwords, etc. anyone have any suggestions on how I can solve this? -eric -- The following information is important for all members of the viphone list. RE: Question about file sharing in iTunes 12.2.1
Well, this is where the accessibility breaks down. The list of apps under file sharing does not read. So, if you arrow down the list, you hear nothing. However, If you are on an app that does not read, and you tab a number of times, You will get to the file and the date of the file that relates to that silent app you are on in the list. There is then an add button and a save as button. Of course, if you are not on the right app, you have to back tab to the silent list again, arrow up or down, and tab to the file name all over again. Yikes! I do hope they fix this one. Well, after a bit of online research, it would appear that file sharing is busted in iTunes 12.2. Oh, how nice. RE: Voiceover accessible flashcard app
Hello Anna, I did some poking around and honestly, I figured why mess around. I like Flashcards++. It’s completely accessible, works especially well for foreign language learning, can import from a few services and has lots of other features. I think I’m just going to stick with this app. I do wish the Dev would get around to supporting Google Sheets and Google Drive, but since the last update was last year, who knows how it’ll be supported in the future. That said, the app feels pretty complete as is. I can get around the Google Drive issue by going through FileBrowser and opening a file there and have it openned in Flashcards++. I’m surprised that it has such a low rating all things considered. Thanks for offering your feedback. RE: Question about file sharing in iTunes 12.2.1
It’s not only the file sharing that isn’t possible any more. I used to be able to tab into my list of available apps and install or uninstall anywhere from one to many at the same time by simply going down the list and checking the ones I wanted or didn’t want. Now that list view only shows app sizes and while I can tab around and find apps as well as install or remove buttons, it’s really clunky and certainly not efficient as before. Oh well, let’s hope that in time Apple and the screenreader companies get this fixed again. Re: SIRI definitely requires improvements
Hi, Along these same lines I recently asked Siri when the Breeders cup was this year and she replied “hmm horse racing I wish I knew more about that.” She knew it was a horse race but couldn’t figure when it’s to be held. Even when she annoys me she gives me a giggle. But I agree with you I wish they’d improve her too. Robin From: Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, July 26, 2015 11:45 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: SIRI definitely requires improvements Hi everybody, This goes back to the thread about SIRI and the question Neil asked about the latitude of Maddison, Wisconsin. Did that too. In fact, Window-Eyes staff meet with Apple regularly, so I CC them when I write to Apple Accesibility. I should have said that the first time. RE: Report on transferring my library from a Windows 7 to Windows 10 computer
If you have the room, allowing iTunes to copy the files to the iTunes library is a way to guarantee that you won’t have trouble finding the files later if you happen to move a folder, delete a file, or not have the USB drive plugged in the same place so it gets a different drive name.
